Began in Holland in the 80’s. Since then its use has grown around the world to serve multiple different users in a variety of facilities with a diversity of applications

• SNOEZELEN first came to North America in 1992
• Marketed by FlagHouse under distributor agreement with ROMPA, UK
•• First implemented at Lifespire in New York and Bloorview
Kids Rehab in Toronto
• Originally described as a recreation/relaxation experience for children and adults with learning and multiple disabilities
• Now it has grown beyond anything that can be captured in a single description

SNOEZELEN PHILOSOPHY
• ‘Pure’ Snoezelen has no purpose other than enjoyment
• But today, Snoezelen is used increasingly for
education, therapy, stimulation, calming, interaction,
treatment
• Sessions are best if client led in a safe, comfortable
atmosphere with an air of enjoyment, motivation
• Freedom from pressure to achieve
• Client makes choices
• Improved client/caregiver relationship
• An approach designed to enhanced quality of life

Can help bridge cognitive, perceptual, behavioral and physical impairments, and other limiting conditions
