1951 - Video Tape Recording (VTR) was invented by Charles Ginsburg. It captured live images from TV cameras and transfered the electric signal to a magnetic tape.
CBS used VTR first, and many shows were no longer filmed live because of the editing abilities the tape offered. However, the sound recorder and video were connected by a wire, which made it a two man job.

1971 The first Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) was sold by Sony.
1976 After JVC’s VHS (Video Home System) beat out Sony’s Betamax, the race was on to build a smaller, affordable camcorder.
1982 Sony released Betacam which had combined the video and audio of recording.

1995 Sony, JVC & Panasonic launched DV (Digital Video) and soon were using MiniDV cassettes. This technology offered superior color and image quality.
2003 Sony released a camcorder called XDCAM which used a tapeless recording format. This also led to CD and DVD technology.
Now with features like LCD screens on most camcorders, easier ways to download and edit video, and a price on average of $500, camcorders have become very accessible to consumers.
