COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE:This activity is designed to foster improvements in physician knowledge, competence and performance in general pediatrics by exploring what constitutes ideal evidence-based practice and applying that ideal across varied health care arenas. This fast-paced course will augment the traditional lecture format with expert panel discussions and breakout sessions to enhance knowledge base and skill set. Audience response systems will provide participants with immediate feedback, allowing the opportunity to reinforce comprehension and retention of key learning objectives. The course combines the latest in evidence-based medicine and best-practice strategies relevant to the topics being addressed. A full syllabus of educational materials will be provided online as a resource for those practitioners caring for pediatric patients.

INTENDED/TARGET AUDIENCE:Pediatricians, Family Medicine Practitioners and Primary Care Providers.

COURSE GOAL:To provide physicians, and other providers caring for children, with current evidence-based practice guidelines relevant to the field of general pediatrics, augmenting the skill set and knowledge base needed to care for patients in a primary care practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:

1. Describe the resources available for foster care parents with special needs children.

2. Explain the changes in treatments for patients with spinal muscular atrophy.

3. Describe the psychological issues of children with developmental problems such as autism.

CHRISTOPHER J. STILLE,

M.D., M.P.H.

Christopher Stille, M.D., M.P.H. is professor of pediatrics and section head

of General Academic Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado. He leads a very active group of almost 50 pediatric faculty, practices and teaches primary care pediatrics, and conducts pediatric health services research and quality improvement focused on improving systems of care for children and youth with special health care needs in the medical home. The primary focus of his research has been improving communication and coordinated care for CYSHCN between primary care clinicians, subspecialists and family members. He has led projects funded by the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and local and regional funders to pursue this investigation. Most recently, he became Principal Investigator of a MCHB-funded national network to conduct health systems research for CYSHCN.
