Welcome to the First Step of Your Experience of a Lifetime.

Every summer over 1 million people gather in Pamplona (Iruñea), Spain from July 6th – 14th to witness and partake in the world renowned San Fermín Festival, also. The 9 day celebration originated as a religious festival to honor Saint Fermín, who is the co-patron of the region of Navarre, where Pamplona is the capital. The festival is comprised of parades, wood chopping competitions, folk dancing, music, bull fights, and of course, the running of the bulls (enceioro). Originally, the fiesta was held on October 10th but has since been changed to July 6th for chances of better weather.

The running of the bulls has become the most popular part of the festival. This idea dates as far back as the 14th century when the only route to get the bulls from their corral to the bull ring would be through the city streets. Overtime people began to run alongside the bulls and as Spanish tradition goes, the bull-run became a bit of a competition. Herders would excite the bulls through the streets to speed up the march. Soon people began to run ahead of the bulls for their own excitement, thus the Running of the Bulls was born.

The San Fermín Festival reached heightened popularity outside of Spain in 1926 when Ernest Hemingway published the novel The Sun Also Rises. The love tale has been printed continuously in multiple languages since 1926, adding to the global popularity of the San Fermín Festival.

At 12:00 noon every July 6th, the square in front of the Town Hall witnesses chaos when the start of the San Fermín Fiesta is marked by a rocket launch. All morning, crowds pack in like sardines at the Plaza Ayuntamiento. The Mayor and members of the Council step out onto the balconies of the Town Hall to greet the crowds. There is an announcement: “Pamploneses, Pamplonesas, Viva San Fermín! Gora San Fermín!” (people of Pamplona, long live San Fermín!). The crowd responds with cries of “Viva!” and “Gora!” The square erupts as hundreds of bottles of Cava are uncorked and sprayed all over the crowd.

BUCKET LIST HINTThis is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable. For this reason we will take you close by the square where you can watch the event on a big screen if you choose not to pile in the crowd. Afterwards we take you to our balcony for an open house with drinks to watch the continuing craziness from above.

4 What is the San Fermin Festival? The fiestas of San Fermin are celebrated in Irunea/Pamplona, in the region of Navarra. They have become internationally known because of the running of the bulls, where the bulls are lead through the streets of the old quarter as far as the bull ring by runners.

The fiestas are celebrated in honor of San Fermin, patron saint of Navarra, although the religious aspect would seem to have taken on a secondary role over the last number of years. Nowadays, the fiestas are seen as a mass gathering of people from all the corners of the world and where the partying, the fun and the joy of it all are the most outstanding ingredients.

4 Where is Pamplona? How do I get there?Pamplona is about 50 miles from the Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish-French border and around 250 miles north of Madrid. Pamplona has an airport with daily flights from Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon. Train travel from Barcelona, Madrid and San Sebastian are also very convenient to arrive in Pamplona. Please refer to www.renfe.com for information on Spain’s national train service.

Page 5: THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME - Bucket List Events · BUCKET LIST HINT This is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable

4 When does the San Fermin Festival take place? The dates of the San Fermin festival are the same every year, no matter the day of the week. The festival begins on July 6th and concludes on July 14th.

4 What’s the average age of Bucket List Events clients?Hard question to answer, but most of our clients are between the ages of 20-65. But it varies with each group. We’ve had guests that are 60+ years of age as well as kids with their families and college students. We don’t have an age limit; you just have to be ready to have a good time!

4 Where is the Bucket List Events balcony located on the Bull Run?Our balcony is located on Calle Estafeta 57 - it overlooks the longest stretch of the bull run route. It is easy to find because we will walk you from your hotel to our apartment where you will be served breakfast and have access to an open bar.

4 Does your balcony space fill up?Yes! We accept only a small and exact number of people to watch from our balcony and share breakfast with us each morning. We want everyone to be able to see the run easily. Therefore, we suggest that you reserve your space as soon as possible.

4 Can I buy an extra day for a spot on the balcony?Yes, all of our tours include one morning to watch the run on our Balcony. We offer extra spaces to our package clients at a discounted rate.

4 Why is the opening weekend more expensive?Regardless of the day of the week the festival begins, the first 48 hours of the San Fermin celebration will be the most attended and boisterous days of the week. Hotel rooms are in higher demand and acquired at higher rates. There is also a one-time event called the Chupinazo, which is an extremely popular event. We host an open house at our balcony to watch some of the debauchery during the opening day.

Page 6: THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME - Bucket List Events · BUCKET LIST HINT This is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable

4 What happens at the Opening Ceremony (Chupinazo) on July 6th?

At 12:00 noon every July 6th, the square in front of the Town Hall witnesses chaos when the start of the San Fermin Fiesta is marked by a rocket launch. All morning, crowds pack in like sardines at the Plaza Ayuntamiento. The Mayor and members of the Council step out onto the balconies of the Town Hall to greet the crowds. There is an announcement: “Pamploneses, Pamplonesas, Viva San Fermin! Gora San Fermin!” (people of Pamplona, long live San Fermin!). The crowd responds with cries of “Viva!” and “Gora!” The square erupts as hundreds of bottles of champagne are uncorked and sprayed all over the crowd. During the day you can expect atmospheric singing, dancing, plenty of sangria and non-stop partying in the streets.

4 What made Bucket List Events choose the hotel that is part of each package?

It’s been a fine tuned process that we believe is the best of both worlds. Hotels located within the party areas are often congested and sleep is hard to find. Our 4-Star hotel, the AC Cuidad, is a Marriott property located less than a mile away from the heart of the festivities, but far enough away that uninterrupted slumber is obtainable.

4 What is the drinking age?18 years old.

4 Do we have to dress up in the traditional white attire and red accessories?

This is not just for the participants in the run; everyone is wearing this, male and female. . The official San Fermin costume is a white shirt, white pants/skirt, a red sash, and a red neck-scarf.

4 Where can we purchase the attire? There is a shop on every corner selling the traditional clothing articles. 4 How many people attend the San Fermin Festival? Each year, the city hosts 1,000,000 participants over the week.

4 How many times do they do the Running of the Bulls? There are 7 runs, beginning July 7th. Each run begins at 8 AM.

Page 7: THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME - Bucket List Events · BUCKET LIST HINT This is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable

4 What are the bull fights like?A traditional Spanish bull fight is part of your package, but we would like to set the correct expectation. The bulls do die during the fight, and the scene isn’t always well received by everyone. These events are deeply rooted in Spanish culture, and the crowd is traditionally boisterous and have a good time.

4 I don’t speak Spanish. Will this be a problem? Unlikely, but we do have guides that are fluent to help with your planning and navigating through the city, especially ordering food!

4 What food is served at the San Fermin Festival? Except to each a healthy dose of tapas, paella, and fish.

4 How is the bathroom situation during the festival? With the increased population during the festival, the city brings in mobile restrooms that are stationed throughout the city.

4 What time do the daily festivities end? This is a tricky question to give an exact answer considering the bars and clubs stay open all night. In regards to actual scheduled activities, the run begins at 8 AM and the night capping public fireworks are at 11 PM. There are concerts beginning at midnight each night on stages set up around the old town.

4 When should I buy my train ticket?Train travel during the festival is extremely busy and we advise you book tickets in advance to ensure a seat. The train journey between Madrid and Pamplona is about 3½ hours and is 4 hours by car. The train journey between Barcelona and Pamplona is about 6 hours. You can book your RENFE tickets 60 days in advance.

4 Is there really a Running of the Nudes? Yup! The Running of the Nudes is held on the day before the official opening day of the festival. Traditionally there are a lot of animal rights activists who wear white underwear or thongs, red scarves, and plastic bullhorns as they protest the perceived animal cruelty of San Fermin.

4 Is it safe?Yes, it is safe. But just like any travel/festival experience, be aware of your surroundings. Keep money is a safe place (not in your back pocket). Security is very present and visible throughout the festival.

Crazy organized with 100% effort in our comfort. Our large group, consisting of two families, participated in the running of the bulls in Spain. Toby and crew made us and all parties with us feel completely involved in the festival. Could not be more pleased. We would use them again in a heart beat.

– Shaun P, Lodi, CA, 2016 Client

4 What else happens during the San Fermin Festival? • Parade of Giants – held each morning with huge paper mache figures dancing and swirling in the streets • Fire bull – or what appears to be a man in a steel drum covered in firecrackers, is let loose each evening to entertain young and old • Corrida – (bull fights) are held each evening from 6.30pm in the arena when three Matadors fight two bulls each • Firework display – is put on each evening near the old Citadel at 11.00pm • Closing Ceremony – the locals gather in the main square, the Plaza de Castillo, to form a candlelight procession to the old church to bid farewell to the festivities for another year. It’s followed, of course, by yet another massive firework display!

4 What are some other local destinations in the area?We traditionally have clients that arrive or depart from larger cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, but the city we recommend in the area is San Sebastian.

Located a mere 50 miles from Pamplona, the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastian is a highly recommended destination during your trip to Spain. Beautiful beaches, incredible architecture and perhaps the best food in Europe, you can knock out this lovely location in a day or less.

We booked a Running of the Bulls package with Bucket List Events and the customer service we received was beyond imaginable! They answered all of our questions before the trip in a timely manner. Once we met the Staff in Pamplona, they were super friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing time. They were very knowledgeable about the festival and the culture and they treated us like family-they were super fun to hang out with. This was a great experience f or us and I would book with them again in a heartbeat!– Monika T, Middlesex, WI, 2016 Client

4 Where does the the Running of the Bulls take place? It goes through four streets of the old part of the city of Pamplona. The four streets are Santo Domingo, Town Hall Square, Mercaderes and Estafeta, and a section called Telefónica before entering into the bullring.

4 When does the Running of the Bulls take place? The dates of the San Fermin festival are the same every year, no matter the day of the week. The festival begins on July 6th and concludes on July 14th at 8 AM.

After the launching of two rockets at 8, the bulls charge behind the runners for the distance between the corral and the bullring. The third rocket, fired from the bullring, signals that all the bulls have entered the bullring. A fourth and final rocket indicates that all the bulls are safely in the corral located inside the bullring, and that the bull run has ended.

4 Does everyone have to participate in the Running of the bulls?Absolutely not. In the Summer of 2013, less than half of our guests participated in the actual run, ages ranging from 21 to 60 years old.

4 Can women participate in the run?Yes. The girls on our staff, as well as some of our younger guests have completed the run with understanding of the assumed risks.

4 I plan to particulate in the run. What do I need to do to prepare? We strongly advise you to watch at least one run before taking part in the run. Each package comes with a day on our viewing balcony, located on the longest stretch of the run. We are confident that by watching the run, you will gain an understanding about how the event progresses. Our staff will also be able to walk the run route with you upon request, giving you a blueprint of the route and traditionally difficult areas.

Planning to run? Here’s what you need to know ...

Page 10: THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME - Bucket List Events · BUCKET LIST HINT This is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable

4 Where do I sign up to Run with the Bulls? There’s no need to sign-up. It’s simply a matter of walking inside the fencing about an hour before the running of the bulls starts (before the fencing is closed) and waiting for the rocket to go off (which signifies they’ve let the bulls out).

4 What is the goal of the Running with the Bulls? It depends on what you what story you want to tell your friends, but we think the ultimate goal should be simply completing the run by ending up in the Plaza de Toros. If you want to get into the arena, don’t fall too far behind the bulls, as they will close the gates shortly after the bulls have entered. You don’t need to actually participate in the arena action: once in the ring you are free to climb the wall and watch from the safety of the spectator areas. However, don’t run too close behind the bull, you don’t want to risk it turning around and causing more trouble.

4 How many bulls run?In total you will see 12 animals. There are 6 bulls which can be recognized immediately by their darker coloring, either black or brown. At a closer look you can also tell them apart because they are not castrated. The other 6 bulls are actually steers, recognizable by their lighter coloring, usually white and brown spots. The purpose of the steers is to keep the whole pack together and to calm down the bulls. The steers run every day and know the course well. Steers are harmless which means, they will not try to gore you. If you stand in their way however, they may bump into you.

4 How many times do they do the Running of the Bulls?

There are 8 runs, beginning July 7th. Each run begins at 8 AM.

The Bucket List Events team provided an amazing professional and personalized experience, and did so in a relaxed setting that allowed everyone to have a great time while feeling comfortable throughout. We look forward to enjoying another Bucket List event with them down the road as they made it so easy for us to focus on enjoying – and surviving (!) -- the running of the bulls.– David C, Los Angeles, CA, 2016 Client

I recommend the Bucket List Events group for the Running of the Bulls. They have the whole experience down to a science.– Vlad E, Toronto, ON, 2016 Client

Our trip to San Fermin with Bucket List Events was nothing short of amazing! Their friendly staff was very knowledgeable and personable throughout the entire trip. Considering all the festival’s attractions, we quickly realized we couldn’t have had near the experience without their strategic planning and coordinating. The convenience of our balcony and placement on the running course put us in an ideal position to enjoy all the event had to offer. We can truly say it was a trip of a lifetime. Can’t wait to plan our next trip with this great group of people.– Case C, Crockett, TX, 2016 Client

This turned out to be just the perfect way to do the Running of the Bulls. Walking tour with history. Balcony access. Safe and comfortable hotel with a little bit of a walk but not extraordinary. It was a good way to see more of the city. Excellent value in having an “insider” for this once in a lifetime event. – R. Wilson, 2015 Client Lenexa, KS

Thanks to the Pamplona Tours team, true aficionados, for making this a trip of a lifetime. Their guidance helped us maximize our cultural understanding of the encierro, and his passion for Festival San Fermin is absolutely infectious. Further, the apartment balcony on Calle Estafeta is in the perfect location, and in retrospect, absolutely critical to gaining the full Pamplona experience. I’d recommend Running of the Bulls with BucketListEvents to anyone with an appetite for adventure, or anyone with a pulse.– A. Cardwell, 2015 Client

The staff at Bucket List Events could not have a provided a better experience! Their generosity, kindness, and knowledge helped make it a one of a kind experience that I’ll never forget. I cannot recommend them enough. You’re in good hands with Bucket List Events and their staff, and I hope to be back someday to do it all over again.– Terry C., Pittsburgh, PA, 2016 Client

2015-16 EVENTS WHAT THEY SAID ...

Page 12: THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME - Bucket List Events · BUCKET LIST HINT This is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable

4 How long is the Running of the Bulls? The run itself is 826 meters, and can last anywhere from 2-6 minutes, depending on the fluidity of the run. The run usually lasts between three and four minutes although it has sometimes taken over ten minutes, especially if one of the bulls has been isolated from his companions.

4 Is there an age restriction to run with the bulls?Yes, you have to at least 18 years old. On the other side of the spectrum, the local police staff will be perusing the participants before the run to remove those they deem unfit, both physically, and well, their state of intoxication.

4 Should I run with a camera?A few years ago we would have said no, but with the advancement of action-specific cameras, this aspect has progressed. We will still recommend not running with anything in hand or pockets, and please note that we will be documenting each run from our balcony.

4 If I fall down during the run, what should I do?Simply stay down and ball up. While this won’t ensure complete safety, it is the recommended reaction to increase safety from runners and toros alike.

4 What happens if a bull gets loose?A large number of pastores (bull “shepherds”) cover the entire bull run. They place themselves behind the bulls, with their only protection being a long stick. Their main role is to stop the odd idiot from inciting the bulls from behind, to avoid the bulls turning round and running backwards, and to help any bulls that have stopped or have been separated from their companions to continue running towards the bullring.

4 Can I watch the Bull Run (encierro) from the bullfight arena (Plaza de Toros)?

Yes, it is possible to watch the runners and bulls enter the arena from the Bull Run. Just walk to the bullfight arena early in the morning to gather a seat before the Bull Run (encierro) at 8 a.m.. After a balcony spot, this is the second best option for watching running of the bulls.

Bucket List Events did a great job setting expectations for my trip and then went out of their way to exceed them. Normally I book travel accommodations and activities myself, but having a knowledgeable staff on-site added value that is hard to quantify. They knew the best places and more importantly when to go. Looking back, I know I would have missed half the experiences if I booked on my own. I would highly recommend Bucket List Events to those that want to maximize their travel experience.

KEY

1) Calle de Santo Domingo This is where the run begins. The route goes up Santo Domingo to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, from there they make a left turn onto Mercaderes. Santo Domingo is the most dangerous stretch

2) Calle de MercaderesShort street leading to a right turn onto Calle Estafeta. Bulls typically stay to the left side of Mercaderes, taking the right turn wide, making this another very dangerous point.

3) Calle de la EstafetaThe longest and straightest leg of the course, bulls gain speed, eventually overtaking runners. The Bucket List Events Balcony is located on Estafeta where you’ll have unbeatable views.

4) Telefónica and CallejónTelefónica is the short stretch coming after the left off Estafeta. Telefónica leads to Callejón – the final entrance to the bullring.

COURSE GUIDE

Page 14: THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME - Bucket List Events · BUCKET LIST HINT This is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable

1. The Running of the BullsSimply put, there isn’t anything else like it in the world.

Although the run only lasts a matter of minutes, the imagery lasts a lifetime. Thrill seekers from all corners of the world come to this small Spanish town to live out a lifetime accomplishment. You watch with intrigue, fear, excitement, concern - emotions that you probably can’t explain because you’ve never seen anything like this before. We highly suggest you watch the run from an elevated vantage point.

2. Chupinazo and Probre de MiThese two events serve as the respective Opening and Closing Ceremonies during the San Fermin Festival. The Chupinazo is a 24 hour extravaganza, full of debauchery and a wild party scene. A simple internet image search will more than confirm this. The Probre de Mi is a much calmer scene, based around a candlelight ceremony and epic fireworks. While standing on opposite ends of the pendulum, each serves as a unique bookend to the 8 days in Pamplona.

3. The Bull FightsWith each passing run of the bulls, there is a bull fight that evening featuring the exact same bulls that run that morning. From roughly 9 AM to 6 PM, they are rested at the arena, and some put up a better fight than others. We’ll be up front here: the bulls do not survive the day and are killed in front of your eyes. Needless-to-say, while the fight isn’t for everyone, we find the atmosphere to be just as entertaining. The crowd is an incredible source of chants, cheers, boos, food fights - perfectly coinciding with what is going on in the ring. Marching bands fill the arena like a college football game, and the crowd belts out every word. While we can by no means guarantee it, there is nothing like a matador receiving the highest honor in the ring. This only happened once in the Summer of 2013, but the matador put on a dramatic show and was given a 10 minute ovation that gave you chills. You never know what you are going to see at the fights, but you should expect to come out covered in sangria.

Our Staff’s top 10 favorite things about the San Fermin Festival

4. The TraditionsWhether is the the constant toast of “Viva San fermin!” or the four rockets that signify the beginning and end of the run, there are dozens of little quirks about the festival. There is the Parade of Giants and Big Heads, which is exactly what it sounds like. There is the traditional Basque attire of red and white, while not mandatory, is highly encouraged. There are the sangria fights, the water baths, the running of the nudes - you should be prepared to see some strange stuff throughout your trip. Odds are, you’ll see something that you’ve never seen before, and will never see again.

5. The MusicWe’re confident in proclaiming that anytime during the 192 hours of the San Fermin Festival, there is a group singing or a marching band playing in the streets. Odds are, you probably won’t recognize the majority of the traditional Spanish songs, the artists take a lot of pride in their music and sound great. When you think about it, there aren’t many American drinking songs that everyone knows. That doesn’t apply to Spain, where generations all know the same melodies, and you hear them coming from every corner. Throw in that the bands play all day, every day in the streets throughout the city streets - it’s like you have a soundtrack provided for you as you amble around.

6. The FireworksEach night during the San Fermin Festival, there is a grand scale fireworks show over La Ciudadela. The city doesn’t cut corners on this one, and each night offers a new choreography to lessen the repetitiveness. Since Pamplona has very few tall buildings, you can see most of the show from anywhere in old town.

7. The ConcertsWhile music is perpetual during the festival, there are two massive stages featuring live bands every evening. The genre of music is very diverse, but it’s incredible how much American influence there is in the music scene - especially Motown. The bands have a big sound (Spain loves their brass) and sound great. And they are FREE!

8. San SebastianLocated a mere 50 miles from Pamplona, the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastian is a highly recommended destination during your trip to Spain. Beautiful beaches, incredible architecture and perhaps the best food in Europe, you can knock out this lovely location in a day or less.

Page 16: THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME - Bucket List Events · BUCKET LIST HINT This is kind of an intense event. There is a lot of pushing back and forth and it can be quite uncomfortable

Every street hosts a series of beautiful squares full of bars and restaurants, and the two places we dined were among the best I’ve ever had. And we haven’t even gotten to the beach yet! The Bay of La Concha is a sight to see – a wonderful white beach with bright blue water. Keep in mind it is a European beach, so there are some European traits to expect..

In the opinion of our staff, a trip to San Sebastian is highly recommended during your trip to Spain. We would love to help make the proper arrangements for the perfect beach escape, from the best locations for swimming in the Bay of La Concha or the hidden gems among the plethora of delicious eateries.

9. SangriaWhether you choose to drink or not in Pamplona, you are going to come into contact with Sangria. It’s everywhere, both being consumed and used as a prop in the celebration. By the end of your trip, you will know Don Simon brand Sangria like it was a relative.

10. The Plaza de CastilloThe main social square of the old town, this plaza is host to a plethora of famous bars, restaurants, clubs, and casinos. This area was the main haught of Ernest Hemingway, and every business seems to claim that they were his favorite! This is also the location of one of the stages for the nightly concerts, so this is one to more popular after hours locations.

WHY Bucket List EventS?Bucket List Events will make sure you have a once in a lifetime experience in Pamplona. The staff really knew the ins and outs of the festival and always kept the group entertained. Above all, the view of the bull run from Bucket List Events’ VIP balcony (and, of course, actually running with the bulls) was absolutely unforgettable.– S. Cestero, 2014 Client Austin, TX

We had a blast! The Bucket List Events staff was a lot of fun to hang out with during our stay. They were very informative of the festival and answered any questions that we had. They went above and beyond to help us out with the other aspects of our trip. The views from the balconies were amazing and there was plenty of room for everyone to get a good viewing! We will definitely be looking to book more with Bucket List Events in the future. Thanks for the great experience guys!
