as 2013 dawns, we’ve published sixty books here at the experiment since our inaugural fall 2009 list . two of them—Forks Over Knives and Forks Over Knives—The Cookbook—have been New York Times bestsellers . nearly forty have been reprinted at least once, and we’ve now hit the reprint button more than eighty-five times in total . Our books have been reviewed in the Wall Street Journal; our authors have been interviewed on npr and featured on Today and in The New York Times . now, with our new Spring 2013 list, my colleagues and i are excited to be working with authors—Dr . Jennie Brand-Miller and Stefan Klein—whom i published prior to launching the experiment; wonderfully talented writers—Sue Sanders and Jessica wapner—who are making their book debuts; fresh takes on subjects—dogs and running—on which readers regularly turn to books for guidance; an addition to our robust vegan cookbook lineup from the award-winning chef-restaurateurs of Vedge; an all-new science-based diet plan for treating iBS; and intensively researched, engagingly written books that help us to understand the most current of events—aung San Suu Kyi’s astonishing trajectory over the last two years—and the most ancient of monuments: Stonehenge . we hope that you will want to read, sell, buy, review, feature, blog about, cook from, give as a gift, license, translate, and otherwise appreciate these worthy books .

Stefan Klein, PhD Translated by Ross Benjamin

Nineteen brilliantly led conversations with a sterling roster of natural and social scientists, shedding new light on their discoveries, ideas, and lives

How does Jane Goodall’s relationship with her dog Rusty inform her thinking about our relationship to other species? Which time and place would Jared Diamond most prefer to live in, in light of his work on the role of chance in history? What does driving a sports car have to do with Steven Weinberg’s quest for the “theory of everything”? Physicist and journalist Stefan Klein’s intimate conversations with nineteen of the world’s best-known scientists (including three Nobel Laureates) let us listen in as they talk about their paradigm-changing work—and how deeply intertwined it is with their daily lives.

The debut of a talented science writer—the origin story of treating cancer at the genetic level, a crucial development in our long and difficult history with cancer

Almost daily, headlines announce newly discovered links between cancers and their genetic causes. The

Philadelphia Chromosome relates the backstory—never before told at book length—behind many of those headlines. This epic journey unfolds over fifty years, encompassing the first glimpse of a genetic mutation, dubbed the Philadelphia chromosome, in 1959; its role in causing chronic myeloid leukemia (CML); and the development of Gleevec, a groundbreaking drug that overturned every idea of what a cancer drug looks like, how it works, and how it affects the people who take it. Science journalist Jessica Wapner brings this story vividly to life—reconstructing the crucial breakthroughs, explaining the science behind them, and giving due to the dozens of researchers, doctors, and patients whose curiosity and determination restored the promise of a future to the more than 50,000 people worldwide who are diagnosed with CML each year. Chief among them is researcher and oncologist Dr. Brian Druker, whose dedication to his patients fueled his quest to do everything within his power to save them. The Philadelphia Chromosome charts the milestones that define the present era of cancer treatment and is an inspiring story of people working, individually and in concert, to make sense of the unknown and improve the lives of others.

jESSICA WAPNER is a freelance science writer focused on medicine. Her work has appeared in Scientific American, Slate, The New York Times, TheAtlantic.com, New York magazine, Science, Nature Medicine, Ecologist, the Scientist, and Psychology Today. Her writing on cancer has been in patient-focused magazines CR and Cure, as well as Oncology Business Review. She lives in Beacon, New York, with her husband and two young children.

The Philadelphia Chromosome

“David Hungerford could not believe what he was seeing . “He hovered over a microscope, turning the wheels this way and that to ensure the best view . a small glass slide was illuminated from below . it held a single cell that had been expanded and then stopped in the middle of reproducing, its 46 chromosomes on full display . He checked and rechecked, and was absolutely certain: One of the chromosomes was too short .” —from The Philadelphia Chromosome

The Complete Low-fODMAP DietA REVOLUTIONARY PLAN FOR MANAGING IBS AND OTHER DIGESTIVE DISORDERS

Dr. Sue Shepherd and Dr. Peter Gibson

The first and only scientifically proven diet for managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)—presented by the plan’s world-leading experts

“What can I do to feel better?” For years, patients with irritable bowel syndrome have asked doctors this question, and until now, no diet for managing IBS symptoms has ever been proven effective. Of the approximately 20 percent of adults who have IBS, most have had to resign themselves to a lifetime of diarrhea, bloating, constipation, or other uncomfortable symptoms. The low-FODMAP diet is a revolution. In clinical trials, three-quarters of affected adults who reduced their intake of FODMAPs— a set of difficult-to-digest carbohydrates found in wheat, milk, beans, soy, and certain fruits, vegetables, nuts, and sweeteners—also saw improvement in their IBS symptoms. The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet is the authoritative guide to this program. It introduces readers to FODMAPs, guides them through an initial elimination phase, and finally helps them reintroduce foods one by one to develop a sustainable, personalized diet. With up-to-date research, varied meal plans, and 80 simple, delectable recipes, The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet will allow IBS patients to enjoy their meals without fear.

Mom, I’m Not a Kid AnymoreNAVIGATING 25 INEVITABLE CONVERSATIONS THAT ARRIVE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT

Sue Sanders

A mother’s spot-on account of tackling her daughter’s tough questions during her formative preteen years

Parenting a preteen can be a bit like trudging up a dune in the Mojave. Just when you think you’re on firm ground, the sands slip. Maybe your twelve-year-old jumped in the car and confided that she got her first period, or your thirteen-year-old just asked, “Have you ever smoked marijuana?” In Mom, I’m Not a Kid Anymore, Sue Sanders shares twenty-five essays about such conversations with her now fourteen-year-old daughter, on topics that all parents face but not many are prepared to tackle. Preteens are suddenly old enough to form their own opinions—but still young enough to care about yours, which makes Sanders’s startlingly honest accounts so valuable. From doling out advice on dealing with a mean girl (alongside her own middle school memories) to other conversations that go beyond “the talk,” Sanders recounts these teachable moments for readers who are grappling with how they will answer the same questions. By trusting their gut, answering honestly, holding onto their sense of humor, and recognizing that everyone carries a bit of their past into their kids’ present, readers can lay a strong foundation through genuine communication—one that can withstand the seismic force of the adolescent eye-roll.

u Covers classic and modern family topics, including puberty, politics, religion, divorce, and emerging adulthood

u Helpful advice through vivid anecdotes

u Debut author (who has been published in The New York Times, Parents, and on Salon) on the road to discovery by the large audience she deserves

SUE SANDERS is a writer whose essays have appeared in The New York Times, the Oregonian, Parents, Family Circle, and on Salon and Babble, among others. Her stories have been included in the anthologies Ask Me About My Divorce and Women Reinvented. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and daughter.

Straight from the kitchen of Vedge—perhaps the most innovative vegetable restaurant in the country—here are over 100 creative and flavorful dishes

In a 19th-century townhouse in Center City, Philadelphia, white beans meet

sauerkraut, beet root anchors the pots de crème, and broccoli rabe is served Philly style. Welcome to Vedge! Opened in 2011 by acclaimed chef Rich Landau and pastry chef Kate Jacoby (both former proprietors of Horizons, VegNews 2006 Restaurant of the Year), Vedge may be the most innovative vegan restaurant in the country. Patrons savor plates large and small, all of which showcase vegetables as they’ve rarely been prepared before. Now Vedge takes readers inside the kitchen, with 100 recipes that recreate this distinctive (and deceptively vegan) fare at home. Here are recipes for Small Bites (French Breakfast Radishes with Nori, Smoked Tamari and Avocado), Plates (Porcini and Celery Root Shepherd’s Pie), and special dishes featured on the restaurant’s popular “Dirt List” made from just-reaped ingredients (Charred Shishito Peppers), as well as tips and techniques from Chef Landau (such as how to make mushrooms the main event in BLT Sliders), luscious desserts from Chef Jacoby (such as Chocolate Stuffed Beignets), and even cocktail recipes and wine pairing recommendations.

Vedgerestaurant .comHusband and wife RICH LANDAU and KATE jACOBY are the chefs and owners of Vedge in Philadelphia. Landau has been at the fore of vegetarian dining since he opened Horizons Café in 1994. In 2009, he served the first-ever vegan dinner at the James Beard House. In 2012, he received Cooking Light’s Trailblazing Chef Award. Jacoby acts as pastry chef and manages Vedge’s unique cocktail program, which

features housemade syrups and bitters. They live in their native Philadelphia.

2 tablespoons whole grain mustard,

½ cup vegan mayo

1 tablespoon water

2 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons freshly ground black

pepper

1 pound Brussels sprouts, 2 to 3

layers of outer leaves removed and

bottom core cut off

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 teaspoons fresh minced garlic

charred brussels sprouts with smoked mustard sauce

It always bothers me when people say they hate a certain

vegetable. So it was always uncomfortable for me to admit

that I hated Brussels sprouts. One thing that Vedge has

taught me is that you can learn to like any vegetable if it’s

prepared in an inventive way. Little boiled heads of cab-

bage—not so appealing. But when I discovered this trick of

shaving them thin and browning them, they instantly became

one of my favorite vegetables. Smoking the mustard takes

five minutes of the prep time (see “Home Smoked,” page

000). If you don’t smoke your mustard, don’t worry—it’s

great with regular mustard too!

Begin by making the sauce, whisking together the smoked mustard,

vegan mayo and water with 1 teaspoon of the salt and 1 teaspoon of

the pepper in a small mixing bowl. Set aside.

Run Brussels sprouts through the slicer blade of a food processor or

carefully shave on a mandolin.

Heat a large sauté pan on high. Add the olive oil. Just as the oil starts

to ripple, add the garlic, then immediately add the shaved Brussels

sprouts. Sear for 30 seconds, then stir to prevent the garlic from

burning.

Add the remaining teaspoon salt and remaining teaspoon pepper,

then allow the Brussels sprouts to sear for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring oc-

casionally so they brown evenly. Transfer to serving dish.

Drizzle sauce directly on top of Brussels sprouts.

Stonehenge— A New UnderstandingSOLVING THE MYSTERIES OF THE GREATEST STONE AGE MONUMENT

Mike Parker Pearson and the Stonehenge Riverside Project

A striking and original interpretation of the enigmatic Stone Age site based on a major seven-year excavation with unparalleled access to the monument

Despite its being one of prehistory’s most alluring landmarks, only half of Stonehenge has ever been investigated, and many records from previous digs are inaccurate or incomplete. The Stonehenge Riverside Project, led by noted archeologist Mike Parker Pearson, set out to gather new evidence about this mysterious site. After seven years of unprecedented access to the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, the project’s findings replace centuries of speculation about even the most fundamental mysteries of Stonehenge with hard proof. Stonehenge—A New Understanding changes the way we think about the site, correcting previously erroneous dating, filling gaps in our knowledge about its builders and how they lived, clarifying the monument’s significance both celestially and as a burial ground, and contextualizing Stonehenge—which sits close to one of the densest prehistoric settlements in Europe—within the broader landscape of the Neolithic Age.

“the book describes one of the outstanding archeological projects of recent years . it is accessible, original, carefully researched, and important . But, above all, it is exciting .” —Richard Bradley, Reading University

u Drawing nearly one million annual tourists, Stonehenge is one of the world’s most-visited sites

u Groundbreaking findings from an unprecedented seven-year archeological dig—presented for the first time in book form

u Written by the leader of the project and a foremost archeological expert

u Includes 18 color photographs and 88 drawings of the excavations, artifacts, and discoveries of Stonehenge archeological expeditions past and present

MIKE PARKER PEARSON is a professor at the Institute of Archaeology at University College London and an internationally renowned expert in the archeology of death. The author of sixteen books and over 100 academic papers, he led the Stonehenge Riverside Project from 2003 to 2009. He has appeared in the National Geographic Channel documentary Stonehenge Decoded and in the NOVA episode “Secrets of Stonehenge.”
