There is usually a plethora of ac-tivities in which to participate on

Northern State University’s campus. However, if you feel the urge to get off campus for a while and enjoy all that the great town of Aberdeen has to offer, there are a number of places to checkout and enjoy.Wiley Park — An obvious

choice for a variety of reasons, Wiley Park is simply the place to go for some good, whole-some fun. Storybook Land is a favorite for all ages and includes a maze, small play-ground, slides, mini train rides, carousel and a climbing wall. Wiley Park offers walking

and biking paths with bike and skate rentals. There is a lake and beach where you can rent canoes, aquacycles, paddle-boats and funyaks. Thunder Road offers bumper boats, miniature golf and go-karts. The wildlife zoo has many

animals, including buffalo and prairie dogs, and keep watch for the peacocks that wander freely on the grounds. The Red Rooster Coffee

House — Located on Main St. and open until 11 p.m. or later for those late night java needs, The Red Rooster is a great place to meet with friends and/or get some homework done (using

their free Wi-Fi!). The atmo-sphere is cozy and laidback. The Red Rooster is also a

perfect for those who want to experience a night of the arts. The Village Bowl — For

some indoor fun and friendly competition, The Village Bowl is the place to go. They offer many specials, including Glow Bowl on Friday and Satur-day nights and Monday Buck Nights, which mean a dollar a game and a dollar for shoes. Wal-Mart and IHOP —

Where do you go at 2 a.m. if you’re bored and/or hungry? The answer is two of the few places in Aberdeen that are open 24 hours. Whether you need hair dye for a late-night prank or are desperately crav-ing food not made in a micro-wave, these are the places to go. Want somewhere to get food

but don’t want to have to go in somewhere to get it? Try McDonalds’ Drive-thru on 6th Ave., which is open 24 hours. Melgaard Park — Just a

block south of campus, Mel-gaard is offers plenty of space for a pick-up game of touch football or ultimate Frisbee. There is also a basketball

court, skate park, sand vol-leyball court, band shell and playground. You can also simply bring a blanket and enjoy some peace outdoors and away from campus.Twist Cone — A local favor-

ite, Twist Cone is located on the

way out to Wiley Park. It offers a wide variety of cold treats as well as hot foods, such as hot dogs and BBQs. It is a great way to end a day out with friends. Shenanigans’ Wings Night

on Wednesdays and La-ger’s Chicken-on-a-Stick on Thursdays (Ages 21+ only) — Shenanigans offers a pound of wings (barbeque, hot, or double-dipped) for half the price on Wednesday nights, while Lager’s Inn has chick-en-on-a-stick for sixty cents a piece on Thursday nights. Delicious food for cheap?

What more could a broke col-lege student ask for? Keep your eyes and ears peeled for other deals around town. There’s usually something for every night of the week. Sixth Avenue Gallery —

When it comes to this place, the easier question to ask is, “What doesn’t this place have?” Even though the big sign outside the building says Mattress Matters, the building contains so much more: A pub, café, Shrunken Head Tattoos, Charlie’s House of Games and a large space for live bands, DJs and dancing. The Sixth Avenue Gallery is

open until 2 a.m. Sun.-Thur. and 4 a.m. Fri.- Saturday, with live

Orientation

Fall 2011

After weeks of inter-views and delibera-tion last semester, Northern State Uni-

versity chose its next Director of Student Activities.

-ly started in the position this past June, anticipates a busy semester for student activi-ties and looks forward to meet-ing and working with students.Carithers begins his time at

NSU with 16 years of student ac-tivities experience, having served in California, Colorado, Virginia and Rhode Island schools in either a director or coordina-tor capacity. He attained his bachelor’s degree in Recreation at the University of Northern Iowa and his master’s degree in Recreation and Sports Manage-ment at the University of Idaho.

-tracted Carithers to Aberdeen, and the room for growth on cam-pus made NSU a logical decision. “I was very impressed with

the faculty and staff I met dur-ing my interview and the strong sense of community and col-laboration across campus. There [is] tremendous potential for building a strong and sustain-able student activities program that would meet the needs of students,” Carithers said. Carithers plans on making

positive changes on campus that would improve the quality of life

for students who attend NSU. “I always involve students be-

fore making changes to existing programs,” Carithers explained. “It’s important to gauge their

needs and interests and then work with them to design and implement new program initia-tives. Over the summer I’ve had the opportunity to meet with the incoming CAB president and Gypsy Days co-chairs and they’re eager to make things happen on campus. I’m excited to be a part of that process.” The plan is to offer more

opportunities to students with free time looking for fun things to do on campus. As for the time spent working

at NSU so far, Carithers feels he has had a positive experience. “Everyone has been very

welcoming and extremely gen-erous with their time and sup-port.” He’s looking forward to meeting students and learn-ing more about their ideas for bettering life and increasing future opportunities at NSU.

Welcome to All Wolves,Old and New

Rachel SchipperLiz Zappa

Victoria LuskRachel SchipperLiz Zappa

Once again it’s that time of the year. You know: the one

you have dreaded for most of your life, the one that in-creases your stress while draining your wallet, the one that means the end of sum-mer and the dawn of another long cold winter (which, in South Dakota, usually lasts until May)… Yup, it’s time for school to start! But do not yet despair! For

with these unpleasant adjust-ments come plenty of positive changes that far outweigh the

negative. For starters, there are many

campus all around us. The most noticeable ones are the Student Center’s long-await-ed makeover and the Barnett Center’s large addition. Al-though things have been and will be disrupted by the ongo-ing construction, it is all guar-anteed to be worth the minor inconveniences. Clubs, organizations and

athletics are already busy at work, providing you with numerous opportunities to go out and have fun. (It’s not

procrastinating;; it’s taking a study break. Right?) CAB, Intramurals, sports games… So much to do, so little time. Check out your new student planner, the NSU Web site, or the schedules in this issue of The Exponent to see what is happening around campus and the community. If all else fails, at least take

some time to make a few new friends this year. The dorms

are numerous new professors and administrators all over campus.

As one saying goes, “A stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet,” so don’t be shy! With all this in mind,

Northern State Univer-sity’s Student Publications would like to extend a hearty welcome to all new and returning students, faculty and administration. We’re looking forward

to sharing this new and ex-citing semester with you. Go Wolves!
