Mon to Thurs: 9am - 3:30pm Friday: 9am - 3pm Deadline for Bass Valley News inclusions - 20th of the month

Hi all. I have been able to provide you with our third colour edition in a row. However, for colour to become a regular feature, we need to source more funding. Currently, the Bass Valley News is operating at a significant loss because amongst other reasons, I have felt it necessary to publish extended editions

more often than not. These have proven very popular but they do come at a cost. So, I either stick predominantly with the 12 page b&w format or get more financial support to be able to step up to a regular 16 page edition, preferably with some colour pages on gloss paper. Recently, I wrote to our Committee of Management with some suggestions on how we could get more funding for the Bass Valley News. One of these tasks will be to source more funds via local businesses. A letter-drop will be carried out to some 1200 businesses within the Bass Coast Shire. My aim is to get two businesses a month to take out one full page advertisement in full colour. If this can be achieved, I can provide a regular 16 page newsletter with colour. Cheers, Ed.

Grantville Community Garden A number of community groups are now working together to help U3A in its

quest of finding the funds and the right location for a community garden. “It needs to be situated close to a water supply system and have easy

access to toilet facilities,“ said U3A President, Sheila Moore. “It would also have to be fenced off and members would have to pay a yearly fee for their plot. The main problem at the moment is finding an appropriate site.”

Grantville Memorial Park meets the criteria of easy access to water and toilet facilities but it was agreed that a community garden would not fit in with the more formal and structured layout of the park design.

President of the Memorial Park Committee of Management, Helen Zervopoulos, said that such a project needed to exist within a community hub. “The problem with Grantville is that we do not have a community hub,” said Helen. “We need a community centre, child care facilities, youth facilities, a drop-in centre, a skate park and a community garden all in the one location. At the moment our community is fragmented because we do not have any of these facilities or services.”

The working group comprising of Zena Benbow from the Pioneer Bay Progress Association, Helen Zervopoulos, President of the Memorial Park Committee, Sheila Moore, President of the U3A and Barbara Loach, President of the Leadbeater Community Development Committee, agree that the ideal place for a community hub would be the Grantville Reserve including the Grantville Community Hall. However, in order for the hall to become a proper community centre operating on the same model as the Corinella & District Community Centre, it would have to undergo major renovations and extensions.

According to Ms Zervopoulos, this would not be an insurmountable problem. “There is plenty of funding out there for such projects. It is just a question of the community groups working together with the same vision and plan in order for this to become a reality.”

Bass Coast Project Coordinator, Raeleigh Harris, who is working on the 'Go Fresh Go Local', project which aims at making more fresh fruit and vegetables available to rural communities, is keen to see the project come to fruition and has offered to help.

In the meantime, the garden group will be looking at the old hall site on the eastern side of the Bass Highway and approaching the DSE for their support in getting the garden up and running by next spring.

“At least if we start somewhere we can see if it is going to be a sustainable project,” said Barbara Loach.

On the first weekend in May, judges from Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria (KABV) went looking for Victoria’s cleanest beaches.

As part of their itinerary, they stopped off at the San Remo foreshore, to visit the Bass Coast Pet Expo.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Manager, Steven Piasente said, “There was a clear connection between the KABV awards and the expo. Our community safety rangers entered their Dog Owners Do The Right Thing campaign into this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful awards. The campaign was part of a proactive education and incentive program that was trying to reduce the negative impact from pet dogs on public parks and beaches. The judges went along to the expo to meet the rangers and get a first hand look at the work they do to promote responsible pet ownership in our community. Our rangers were keen to talk to the judges and show them how the campaign helped to make our beaches cleaner and more environmentally-friendly places to visit.”

Mr Piasente said that pet owner education is a routine part of being a ranger but the team has really concentrated on the best way to help owners ‘do the right thing’. During the campaign over the summer period, rangers gave out gift vouchers as rewards to dog owners who were cleaning up after their pets.

“We also handed out dog leads and dog poo bag pouches to owners, to help owners understand what is expected of them when they take their pets out in public places. Our community rangers aim to keep Bass Coast beaches safe, clean, beautiful and memorable for the right reasons,” concluded Mr Piasente.

The 2011 winner of the ‘Clean Beach of the Year’ title was Frankston Foreshore.

This year’s winners of the KABV Clean Beaches Awards will be announced in Melbourne on Friday, 27 July.

PROJECT OCHOBO The Bass Valley News

Following on from our report in April where parishioners from St Vincent’s Catholic Church welcomed Father Joseph to Loch, I am pleased to inform the Bass Valley News readers that our church has made steady progress in aiding Father Joseph’s home village of Ochobo, Nigeria.

Briefly, some of our parishioners met with Father Joseph in January and listened to the story of his background and the descriptions of hardships experienced during his childhood and adversities that people in his village were coping with in their daily life.

The group approached Father Joseph with a proposal, asking if his home village would benefit from assistance in kind or money donated by the community.

The churches in Nigeria cannot supply vestments and altar items and each newly ordained priest must save up and buy their own.

So began Project Ochobo. Our team of volunteers held two markets in Loch. The March market raised $1223.60 and the April market raised an astounding $1928.15. With other donations received at the parish office over the past month, the total currently raised for Project Ochobo is $3,500.

Besides all goods being donated, volunteers from St Vincent’s Catholic Church manned the stall and 100% of monies taken will be donated to Ochobo where the funds will be managed by the local Catholic Bishop. No overheads will be deducted from the market proceeds.

The donations, generosity and support given to the team from our parishioners and the community in general has been heart-warming; not only to the team but to Father Joseph and more importantly the

Parish priest in Ochobo and his villagers. The parish priest of St Michael’s Catholic Church, Ochobo will

now be able to afford a Mass Box from some of the funds raised. The village has no fresh running water and only an intermittent

power supply. Therefore, this makes regular use of refrigeration and computers impossible, so only basic educational resources are used for the village’s children. Although Bishop, Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, has made commendable efforts to pump water into tanks,

the dry season remains very challenging. Villagers need to walk several kilometres to collect water from wells. Then as the season continues, wells dry up and others become polluted. Some people become immune and cope but disease remains a problem to others. Many people suffer from typhoid, cholera and dysentery. Hence, the sick villagers and the elderly are unable to walk to collect water. Members of the Project Ochobo team are now committed to providing a sustainable, effective water supply to the village of Ochobo, Nigeria.

Further fundraising events have been planned for Project Ochobo. In closing, on behalf of the 18 members who make up the team of

Project Ochobo, I wish to sincerely thank everybody who has supported our project. The response that we have had so far has been overwhelming. We all feel extremely humbled.

We now have a website where you can view more of Father Joseph’s story, read correspondence from Bishop Michael, follow future projects in Ochobo and note fundraising events that we are planning. Go to projectochobo.org.au

Kind regards to all, Dianne Stewart.

THE TOWNS

South Gippsland Animal Aid

Adopt a cat or dog - or both Soxy (male black with white toes and short hair) and Patches (female white with black patches and medium hair length) have been much loved pets for over 14 years. Both were rescued by their owners when they were kittens. Reluctantly they were surrendered to the animal aid for personal reasons. The two cats are looking for their retirement home. They are quiet and self- contained with Soxy loving to be patted and Patches preferring to snooze the day away in her bed. They are healthy and happy 16 year old cats, deserving of a nice home to relax for the last years of their lives. As they have been together all their lives it would be ideal if they could be homed together.

Webster is a 15 month old staffy X. He needs someone with which to spend lots of time. For example, a companion to a tradesman or farmer.

Cody is a 12 year old Wolfhound X. He is a quiet old guy who loves other dogs and people.

Jenna (Cody’s mate) is a 14 year old Kelpie X. He is also quiet and gets on well with other dogs.

We have welcomed on board several new kitten/cat carers and the numbers of kittens and cats they have vet worked and re-homed are many. We are always looking for volunteers to help in our shop and the care of the animals.

MAY

End Of Season Presentation Night Following on from the C2 premiership in 2011-12, the club was hopeful for

another successful season in its second season in the Leongatha District Cricket Association (LDCA).

The upgrade of the training facilities at the Bass Recreation Reserve with the financial support from the Bendigo Community Bank and the Electrical Trades Union, was completed early in the season with considerable time and effort put in by members of the club and volunteers from the local community, which was coordinated by myself and Trevor Aplin.

In February, the Club hosted a Pink Stumps Day in support of the McGrath Foundation and raised $1700 towards funding Breast Care nurses in the Australian community.

On the field the club had the top 3 senior teams play off in the finals series, resulting in the 1st XI and 2nd XI runners up and the 3rd XI losing in the semi-final. It was also the first year that the club had entered 4 senior teams which highlights the growing strength of the club.

The club was also pleased to have a record number of boys and girls join the Milo Cricket program as well as fielding U16, U14 and U12 teams in the LDCA.

On an individual level, KBCC had a number of players named in the LDCA teams of the year for their respective grades. In A2, Club Captain / Coach Steven Oates, also the leading run scorer in the A2 competition, Trevor Aplin and Heath Grace named in the B2 team of the year, John Oates in the C1 team of the year and Gary Burchell in the C2 team of the year.

The Kilcunda-Bass Cricket Club would proudly like to thank their sponsors for their support throughout the 2011-12 cricket season. They are: AW Homes, George Bass Hotel, Bendigo Community Bank, ETU, Van Steensel Timber and Hardware, JB Carpentry, Corinella General Store, Newhaven Hardware, Westernport Plumbing, Mabcon, Blackwood Forest Nursery, Grantville Garden Supplies, Oceanview Windows, Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, Karasi Park, Bass Coast Concrete Pumping, Bass Concrete and Selling Real Estate.

Awards for players not pictured were: Gary Burchell who was awarded C2 Club Champion with an overall average of 46.80. He won batting aggregate with 268 runs and an average of 53.06. C2 Captain’s Award went to Chris Condick. The fielding award went to Luke Petrie. Darren Aurisch, had a commendable bowling average of 15 wickets and an average of 14.07. The Captain’s Award went to Darrel Petrie.

A guy is sitting at home alone when he hears a knock on the front door. When he opens the door, he encounters two policeman, one of whom asks if he is married and if so, whether the policeman can see a picture of the wife. The guy says, “Sure," and shows him a picture of his wife. The policeman looks carefully at the picture and then gravely says, "I'm sorry sir but it looks like your wife's been hit by a truck." The guy says, "I know but she has a great personality, is an excellent cook, and lets me play golf whenever I want to!"

~ Pirate Success at Maru ~ We hosted our annual Grantville Pirate Festival on 14 April at Maru

and Pirate Pete’s Mini-golf. Thank you to all of those who attended and joined in to make the day a success. Shown are some action shots from the day that highlight the activities that were enjoyed by all. Many of the adults dressed up and joined in a very serious Tug of War of their own as well.

Two pictures featured, one in the lower left corner and one in the lower right corner, were some of the people who paid for a special ‘close encounter’ experience with our animals but they forgot to collect their photos. So if you are pictured in one of these photos or know who is, please contact us at Maru so we can give you your photo!

The winners of the colouring competition (as pictured top right) were presented with their trophies and medallions by our local Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman, who kindly judged the competition.

We look forward to doing it all again in 2013. Neroli & Ian Heffer.
