The Fall of Lucifer (Satan) and His Angels (Demons)

2 Peter 2:4 ...God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;Jude 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

* Psalm 103:20-21...

Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.

* God charges fallen angels with folly (Job 4:18)* Satan is the head of all the “fallen” angels.* The devil is not a man with horns, hooves, a tail and a pitch fork* His existence believed by Jesus and His Apostles: (See Matt 4:1-11; 12:27, Luke 10:17-18, Romans 16:20, 2 Cor. 11:14 & 16, Revelation 12:7-9; 20:2, 10)

A. The Many Names of Satan

* Satan’s name appears 54 times in the Bible* His many names reveal features of his character:

- Satan means “the adversary” (1 Pet. 5:8, KJV)- Abaddon, Apollyon (Rev. 9:11) both mean “the destroyer”- Lucifer (Isa. 14:12) means “day-star,” “bright one,” or “shining one”- Devil (Rev. 12:10) means “accuser,” “slanderer”- Dragon (Rev. 12:9) indicates his power- The accuser of the brethren (Rev. 12:10)- The adversary (1 Pet. 5:8)- Beelzebub (Matt 12:24) means “lord of flies” or “prince of demons”- Belial (2 Cor. 6:15), the low, abject one, means “worthlessness” in Old Testament- The deceiver of the whole world (Rev. 12:9)- An enemy (Matt 13:28)- The wicked one (Matt 13:19)- The father of lies (John 8:44)- A murderer from the beginning (John 8:44)- Prince of this world (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11)- The god of this world (2 Cor. 4:4)- The prince of demons (Matt. 12:24)- That old serpent (Rev. 12:9)- The tempter (Matt 4:3; 1 Thes. 3:5)- The tormentor (2 Cor. 12:7)

* Satan was not always a devil* He was once bearer of light who became prince of darkness* Lucifer, is mentioned in Isaiah 14:12-14: "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: (the 5 “I will’s”) ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’”

* Lucifer in the Hebrew word #1966 [Heylel prounounced hay-lale'] means “light-bearer” - shining one, morning star* The root definition of his name comes from the sense of “brightness” from the root word

“Halal” which is one of the seven words of “praise”- which means to shine (of God’s favor)- to flash forth light- to praise, boast and be boastful - to act madly, act like a mad man

B. The Cause of Satan’s Fall

* Lucifer became Satan at a price* cast out of heaven (Luke 10:18) and then made the air and the earth the scenes of his diabolical

activity (Ephes. 2:2; 1 Pet. 5:8)* The haughty ruler of Babylon and the miserable King of Tyre (Ezek. 28:12-18) fittingly

describes the once glorious chief in heaven: 12 "'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. 16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. 17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. 18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the

ground in the sight of all who were watching. 19 All the nations who knew you are appalled at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.'"

* The iniquity by which Lucifer fell was pride, or his being lifted up by reason of his superlative beauty and brightness

* But what caused his pride?* Jealousy, covetousness, wanting something that did not belong to him* Ordained as an “anointed as a guardian cherub”* Guardian of the glory of God, a mentor of worship* Isaiah 14:12-14, Lucifer wanted his throne to be “above the stars”* “stars” represent “angels”* Wanted to be like God himself....considering equality with God!* He said, “I will be like the Most High”* Remember what Michaels name means? “Who is like God”* Question: Is it possible that Lucifer was coveting Michaels position? * Wanted to be like God, to be worshipped like God was worshipped* He was created to teach by example how to worship God; worship leader of heaven

* What does the Bible say about beauty?* Proverbs 31:20 “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain...”* Beauty without God is empty, nothing, useless* Beauty is meant to reflect God; “Worship the Lord is the beauty of holiness” (Prov. 29:2)* Without the Lord, our beauty is ugly* Futility means: fruitlessness, pointlessness, uselessness, ineffectiveness, inefficacy; failure,

barrenness, unprofitability; impotence, hollowness, emptiness, forlornness, hopelessness.* Deceived by his own beauty* He did not want to worship, he wanted to be worshiped* He believed a lie because he is the father of lies* His own head and heart deceived himself because he allowed those thoughts and evil desires to

give birth to sin

15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. 16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. 17 “Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.” (Ezek 28:15-17; see also 1 Tim. 3:6)

* What does the Bible say about evil desire?* James 1:13-15 says: “Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted from God; for God is incapable of being tempted by [what is] evil and He Himself tempts no one. But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust,

passions). Then the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully matured, brings forth death.” [AMP]

* An “anointed cherub,” probably the leading cherub but not the leading angel of heaven. * He was not “the archangel” of heaven - Michael was.* John 12:31, “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be

driven out.* God gave to angels and men intellect and will, the ability to choose between good and evil* Lucifer might have been envious of the future exaltation of human nature by its union with the

Son of God in His Incarnation* Even think about the serpents conversation to Eve in the garden.* Do you hear jealousy in this conversation? Gen. 3:1-5

1 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

* Ultimately, Satan’s hatred is against Jesus himself who would strip him of everything

C. Fallen Angels (demons)

7 And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down - that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. (Rev. 12:7-9)

* Satan is not alone in his spiritual attacks* Jesus speaks of the eternal fire prepared for “the devil and his angels” (Matt 25:41)* In Matt 12:24 he is called “Beelzebub, the prince of demons”* We have more than one enemy confronting us* Jesus drove “seven demons” out of Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9; Luke 8:2)* man possessed by an entire legion of demons (Mark 5:9-15; Luke 8:30-33)* Demons believe in God; James 2:9* Demons think and believe and hear and speak* Peter tells us in 2 Peter 2:4; “For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;”* Jude 6 speaks of “the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their

own home”

Page 5: The Fall of Lucifer (Satan) and His Angels (Demons) 2 ... · * Satan was not always a devil * He was once bearer of light who became prince of darkness * Lucifer, is mentioned in

* One passage hints at the possibility that as many as one third of the angels in heaven fell when Satan did (Rev. 12:3-4)

“...a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.  His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.”* The vision John saw may well have been a playback of what happened in heaven before human

history began

Spiritual Warfare

* Demons are Satan’s servants * Often called “evil spirits” or “unclean spirits”* Ruled by Satan himself* Satan and his angels (demons) are free to roam this world and to deceive* Peter said in 1 Pet. 5:8 “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

* So the devil and his demons are under condemnation, but until their day of judgment they are free to deceive and posses those who respond to their temptation

“the prince of this world now stands condemned.” John 16:11* “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.” I John 12:31* Peter said that the devil is prowling and Jesus said that now is the time for the prince of this

world to be driven out?* Psalm 8:2, “Out of the mouths of babes and unweaned infants You have established strength because of Your foes, that You might silence the enemy and the avenger.” * But also in Luke 10:17-21 “17 When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, "Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!" 18 "Yes," he told them, "I saw Satan falling from heaven as a flash of lightning! 19 And I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. 20 But don't rejoice just because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered as citizens of heaven." [that your names are written in the Lambs book of life] 21 Then Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit and said, "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding the truth from those who think themselves so wise and clever, and for revealing it to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.

Satan’s Impending Doom

* Cast out of heaven (Luke 10:18), then to the earth (Rev 12:9), he is to be fettered for 1,000 years in the bottomless pit (Revelation 20:1-3)

Page 6: The Fall of Lucifer (Satan) and His Angels (Demons) 2 ... · * Satan was not always a devil * He was once bearer of light who became prince of darkness * Lucifer, is mentioned in

“The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Rev 20:10)* Jesus “must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet” (1 Cor. 15:25* Disciples said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” (Luke 10:17)* Jesus answered, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”* Jude 6 “in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day”* We “struggle....against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in

the heavenly realms” (Ephes 6:12)

The Power of Demons

* Jesus “casting out spirits” (Mark 1:39)* He cured those who were “troubled by unclean spirits” (Luke 6:18)* Helped and the “demon possessed” (Matt 4:24)* Commissioned His disciples to “drive out demons”; to have “authority over evil spirits”* and to never make light of the expulsion of evil spirits (Matt 10:8; Mark 6:7; 9:38; Luke

9:1-49)* The power Jesus exercised became the prerogative of His disciples (Mark 16:17-18; Acts 8:7;

16:16-18; 19:12-17)* Jesus believed in the reality of demons and more importantly, His supremacy over them* They are spirits (Matt 12:43, 45); They are numerous (Mark 5:9); unclean and violent (Matt

8:28-31)* Demons know Jesus as the Most High God they recognize His supreme authority (Mark 1:23,

24; Acts 19:15; James 2:19)* They are aware of their eternal fate (Matt 8:29) “"What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?"* Demons are in conflict with Christians (Ephes 6:12)* Demons can possess people (Read the book of Mark in the Amplified version)* Demons are a type of fallen angelic being possessing great strength; they invade the human

body with such disabilities as blindness (Matt 12:22)* with insanity (Luke 8:25-36); with muteness (Matt 9:32-33); with suicidal mania (Mark 9:22)* Jesus actually spoke to demons and heard their replies; real beings (Matt 8:28-34)* But Jesus spoke to them to command them, not to have a casual conversation with them* We should not talk to demons or allow them to speak

Christ ~ The Way to Victory

* 1 John 4:4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

* We are doomed to failure if we try to meet Satan on his own ground* Our only hope for victory is to meet him in the virtue and power of our Redeemer and by the

blood of the Lamb and in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord!* We are no match for Satan on our own* We can only conquer him through the blood sacrifice of Christ and God’s angelic host!
