Dear Times Colonist Editor, At the first night of the public hearing (September 6) on the proposed Marine Trail Resort beside the Juan de Fuca Trail, we listened to members of the Pacheedaht and other First Nations communities, the frail elderly, young parents, the newly retired, and a twelve-year-old boy speak out to save our Wild Coast. The level of deep research and deep feeling was enormously moving. The arguments against the development ranged from legal, historical, and political but all were fueled by a cry of anguish from our collective heart. It is clear that if the CRD board allows this rezoning and development to proceed, it will have a furious public to deal with, a public who will hold it responsible for this Trojan horse to untold sprawl and degradation. Make no mistake. We care deeply about the protection of our heritage and the integrity of these lands. We are watching this outcome like the eagles over coastal spruce.

As a participant in the class last year, I can recommend it as a wonderful introduction to a great diversity of music from around the world, set into the context of the mythology behind it while also linking universal themes in those mythologies. This is very much a class for listening and settling into the music rather than for analysis. For a taste, you can hear Elizabeth on North by Northwest (CBC Radio One) on the weekend of September 23 - 24. Here's the link to the course. Course details:
