Supporting DetailsFacts – McClure was one of the top performing schools on the State test.

Statistics – Ninety-six percent of eighth graders met or exceeded on the language arts portion of the test. Don’t use an unusually high percentage (99.9% of students agree.)

Quotes – Mrs. Wing, principal of McClure Middle School reported, “McClure has the best students and staff; that is why we performed so well.”

Have the person whom you are quoting be relevant to the topic.

Anecdotes – My friends and I met twice a week to pop popcorn and pursue our goal of exceeding on the State test.

Each supporting detail should be a paragraph of approximately equal length with your strongest detail last.

Now it’s your turn…Using the prompt at your table, do the following:1. Each person should write a thesis and three supporting details. 2. Once everyone has completed this, as a group, write a hook. Refer to your folder for a sample essay highlighting your assigned hook. 3. Then, mix and match the best thesis statement with the best supporting details. Write these, along with your hook, in the middle of your placemat.

The Red Group will write an Anecdote, a brief story that captures the essence of the issue or situation, as their hook.

The Orange Group will write a Quotation, a voice not your own that speaks to or exemplifies the problem or issue, as their hook.

The Yellow Group will write News, the writer gives the reader the who-what-where-when-why of a situation or issue, for their hook.

The Blue Group will write Background, the writer gives a brief history of the issue or situation, as their hook.

The Purple Group will write an Announcement, the writer tells the reader what he or she is going to say about the issue or situation and takes a stand, as their hook.

Placemat Prompt:Writing SituationEvery year, millions of children write letters to Santa to put in

their requests for Christmas gifts. Usually, Santa decided who gets gifts based on his famous Naughty and Nice List, However, this year, due to the bad economy, Santa has to cut down on the number of children he can bring gifts to; he can only grant the Christmas wishes for 100 children.
