President’s Message...by Jim Doescher
Hi all– Happy New Year! With the polar vortex behind us, we can move on to working with our four legged friends and planning for a new home for NOCI. Many of you were able to see the property at 110 W Woodstock in Crystal Lake. Thank you for your feedback. At this point, we are moving forward to make this space a new home for NOCI. Many, many details need to be worked out before this can happen. We have put together some information for you about 110 Woodstock in Crystal Lake. The sales brochure is old and but it does provide insight. https://tinyurl.com/y8rh6p4a My intention, at this point, is to update the membership at our February membership meeting concerning our move. Details of the process change quickly and often. By February 15th, we expect to know much more. I feel there is a very good chance we will have enough details to take a vote to move forward. We are not planning to have a special membership meeting. For those you who can not attend the February meeting, I AM planning to update you by email within a week after the meeting. In spite of the move, we are trying our best to remember why we do what we do! We are planning classes for the 2nd session, our Fun Matches continue their success, our Awards Luncheon (March 3rd) and our membership renewal is under way. By this time, you may have already received your renewal by email! Please complete it and return ASAP! In closing, I am always amazed by how fast the grapevine works! I have heard many stories. If you hear something that concerns you, please take a minute to contact me or one of the other board members. There is nothing secret going on at our club, just many details that change on almost a daily basis. Jim

Elections: Nominating Committee: Barb Novak, with Collette and Donas. President: Jim Doescher Vice President: Silvia Simmons Secretary: AMber Perri Treasurer: Marianne Noble Training Hall Secretary: Adrienne Ostrowski Current Director: Dana Vierck (fulfills the remainder of her 2-year board position.) Current Director: Peggy Roesner (fulfills the remainder of her 2-year board position.) NEW Director: Barb Novak (new 2-year term.) DOT and DOAT are appointed positions and are not voted upon. Shawn moved; AManda Post seconded; all approved the new board as elected. The meeting adjourned at 8:09 PM, for the new board to meet. The board meeting adjourned at 8:13 PM. The meeting reconvened at 8:15 PM. Jim presented Ray as the new DOT, and that Cheryl will continue as DOAT. DOT: Ray Czubek DOAT: Chery Moore Membership: 264 plus 9 this evening = 273. Unfinished Business: Building update: we need to vacate this building by the end of April 2019. The Christian Youth Center purchased this building for storage purposes. Jim has been working on finding a new building. We are working with a broker, and we are also working with an investor. There is no conflict of interest. The investor would like to purchase a building for us to rent. There is a potential property, however, still early in the process and there are a lot of things still pending. The investor is buying a building with us in mind as renters and wants to have us as a long -term tenant. There are too many things that need to fall into place yet. The potential property is in the Crystal Lake area. The investor will not purchase this property however, without our commitment to rent, ideally a long -term lease. New Business: Wally volunteered to host the NOCI Holiday Party again at the training hall. Discussed that the club is closed for 2 weeks (the weeks of 12/21 and 12/31.) The new session will start on 1/7/19. It was decided to have the NOCI Holiday Party on Thursday 1/3/19 @ 7 PM. Bring a dish to share. There will be dog gAMes as in the past. Thank you, Wally! AKC National Tracking Invitational: the AKC reached out to Wally regarding hosting the NTI in the Chicago area in 2020. Wally is still exploring this idea. Potentially over 3 days: at Burnidge Fri/Sat and Lincolnshire Sat/Sun. Wally advised that this type of event would require a lot of support. Wally proposed to NOCI to consider and he can also solicit other clubs in the area as well. Wally is still contemplating hosting this. The NTI is a very prestig-ious event but lots of work. To be continued. Brags: were shared by all. Heide moved to adjourn the meeting; Gary N. seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:39 PM. Respectfully submitted, AMber Perri, Secretary

What is a Fun Match? Marianne Noble- NOCI Fun Match chair
New members may have heard that NOCI hosts Fun Matches on the first Friday evening of most months, but may be puzzled as to what a Fun Match actually is. A Fun Match is an opportunity for handlers and their dogs to take practice runs in AKC or UKC obedience to help them prepare for actual obedience trials. Unlike an official trial where you can't talk with your dogs, give treats or corrections, handlers are permitted to do all that in a Fun Match. Some clubs call their matches
"Correction Clinics". SAMe thing. Organized to represent an actual AKC or UKC Obedience trial, our Fun Matches have four rings (Beginner Nov-ice, Novice, Open and Utility). Each ring has a “judge” (NOCI volunteers) who give the sAMe commands as at a real trial, but do not do any actual scoring. We have other volunteers who serve as stewards exactly like in a trial. At NOCI Fun Matches, the emphasis is on FUN. The atmosphere is upbeat, congenial and supportive so the dog and handler enjoy themselves. They are designed to allow the handler and dog to practice the exact routine they will experience in a formal trial, These practice opportunities reduce the stress that many experience at a trial because they've done it before and had a good time. We have all been brand new handlers and know how that feels. We want our handlers and dogs to enjoy themselves, because a positive, relaxed demeanor in the ring is key to success once you make the leap to competition. Our dogs take their cues from us. If we give in to anxiety, what must our dogs think? The ring must be a scary dangerous place if it makes my handler worry! Stress can seri-ously hAMper a dog’s performance and contribute to NQs (disqualification) in the ring.
Participating in Fun Matches helps the handler to overcome that physiologic response to normal anxiety. Nearly all handlers have those sAMe concerns, from the Novice A handler to the most experienced trainer with walls full of ribbons. The key is to make sure your dog is well prepared and at ease once you cross the gate into the ring. For members, pre-registered runs cost $5 for the first run and $3 for the second run of the sAMe dog. You can pre-register for the runs of your choice at https://tinyurl.com/ybdn5m9e and pay with PayPal or by check. Walk-ins are always welcome and the walk-in fee for members is $6 (first run) and $4 (second run, sAMe dog). Pre-payments must be received by 24 hours before the match or you will be charged walk-in rates. At NOCI, we are privileged to have a solid corps of volunteers to staff our matches. Each match requires 18 vol-unteers including judges, table stewards, ring stewards and check in stewards. We welcome new volunteers and teAM newcomers with veterans so you can learn your role “on the job”. Volunteers earn service credits which you can apply to reduce the cost of your next class. You can also take one free run with your dog before the Match begins.
All are welcome to stop by at our next Fun Match, Friday night, March 1 beginning at 7 PM so you can see how it works. If you’d like to be a steward, register online at https://tinyurl.com/ybaomh6y. We sometimes have more volun-teers than we need and you will be notified the week before the match if you will be working. We try to rotate our volunteers so everyone who wants to work will get the opportunity to do so. Hope to see you there. Questions? Contact me at [email protected]

Anna, our Bernese Mountain Dog rescue who has
been with us exactly two years (Feb 2 is her gotcha
day), recently passed her Pet Partners Therapy Dog
evaluation. The two of us will soon start walking in
the paw prints of her brother Diesel as a Caring
Paws therapy dog teAM at the local Northwestern
Hospitals (McHenry, Huntley and Woodstock). Our
NOCI classes have done such a good job of
transforming and preparing a shy, retiring dog into a
therapy giver. We are ecstatic!!
