“Every member a ‘Minister’”
SEPTEMBER 2018
Dear Friends,
It is back-to-school season, which also means BACK TO CHURCH! Each year, churches all over the nation celebrate a “Back-to-Church” Sunday on the second Sunday in September. If you have gotten out of the habit of worship, now is the time to step up, step out, and join us! I am looking forward to a great fall season as we continue to grow in Christ and in service to our community. Please take some time to check out all the amazing opportunities in this newsletter for you to worship, connect, serve, and give. I hope to see all of you at our church-wide fall kickoff at Chestnut Ridge! Over the past few years, this has become a highlight of our life together. (See p. 4 for more information.)
As we continue to make disciples and create space for new spiritual friendships, I again want to invite you to consider registration for this fall’s “Discover the Journey” class. This six-session study has been specifically designed to help members, regular attendees, or new visitors discover more about their faith, our church home, and ways we might grow and serve together. In order to keep this a small-group experience, we do limit each group to around 12 people, but please know that if we have enough sign up, we will be happy to schedule more groups! Feel free to e-mail me or call the church office if you want to reserve your spot in our next group which is planned to launch the first Wednesday in October.
I also want to invite you personally to join us for our annual homecoming worship on Sunday, September 23rd as we join together in a combined worship service at 11AM and then gather in Stafford Hall to share in a pot-luck meal that you will not forget! I still remember last year’s wonderful food and homemade goodies—so plan to come, bring food to share, and join the fun!
I am excited about all the wonderful things God is doing in our church and community. If you haven’t yet connected here at FUMC Graham, I hope you will consider doing so this September!
Worshipping, Connecting, Serving, and Giving with You,
Pastor Kevin

Worship Evangelism Message:
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with
you always, to the very end of the age.—Matthew 28: 19-20
Fall is approaching, vacations are winding down, and school is starting. At this time of transitions, we would like to invite you to join us in the Chancel Choir. Practices are on Wednesday night at 7:30 in the chapel (Rm. 102). We meet on Sunday mornings at 10:40 in the choir room (Rm. 006) and sing for the traditional worship service and some special services. We welcome all voice parts. As another option, there may be those who would like to sing for the Festival of Carols. This will be the 29th year
that our choir has joined with the choirs of First Baptist Church of Graham and Graham Presbyterian Church to present a concert of Christmas music for our community. This year’s concert will take place at Graham Presbyterian on December 16 at 7pm. Beginning September 5, we will rehearse this music from 7:30-8pm. Anyone who wants to sing just for the Festival of Carols is welcome to come during that time and leave at 8pm. Whether you want to make a long-term commitment or help celebrate the
Christmas season through beautiful music, we would love to have you as part of our singing fellowship. For more information, contact Doug Rayle ([email protected]).
FALL WOMEN’S RETREAT—An opportunity for women to take a break from
our usual Saturday routines to come together to worship God and learn more
about our individual ministries and callings. On Saturday, October 6 in our chapel (Rm. 102), Beth Moore will lead a worship retreat on a topic specifically
given to her from God just for this event. She waits for God’s direction for
each conference and teaching series that she does, so each is different,
designed by God just for us, now and here. So come expecting to be blessed,
enriched, and encouraged!
Registration is $25 (check or exact cash only), which includes your ticket to attend, your program, and some incidentals. Please bring your own
sandwich for lunch. The UMW will provide snacks and drinks to round out
your meal. You can register on September 9 and 16 in the coffeeshop (Rm.
135) and in the sanctuary breezeway, or e-mail Beth Gove
([email protected]) to make other arrangements.
We will gather at 8:30am, and our program will begin at 9am. Our final session will finish about 3:45pm. For more details, please check the E-News.
Bring a friend, and enjoy our time together! Come expecting a blessing!
Beth Moore

Library Lowdown September 2018
Have you explored the section of our library that houses books selected and purchased by our United Methodist Women? UMW organizes these books into five categories: Spiritual Growth, Nurturing for Community, Education for Mission, Social Action, and Leadership Development. There are also several UMW titles for youth and children. These are identified by blue tape located on the spine. Carol Steele has been the coordinator of this effort for several years.
Did you know that you don’t have to be in UMW to check out these books? We encourage EVERYONE to enjoy these offerings. UMW books are located in our library between the sections “Small Group” and “Fiction.” Here are a few reviews to inspire you to check one out.
Bus to Corinth by Ladine Housholder is a book about five friends who decide to take a trip to Greece to honor the memory of a friend. They retrace the footsteps of the Apostle Paul during his ministry in Athens and Corinth. All the women read 1st and 2nd Corinthians and take turns leading discussions related to the various stops they make along their journey. They also find themselves involved in other life issues during the trip. This book is on the
2018 UMW Reading List. It is a sequel to The Well Women, which the library is planning to purchase.—Review by Doris Sugg
A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout. As a child, author Amanda Lindhout escaped the chaos of her dysfunctional family by reading old copies of National Geographic that she bought at Goodwill. The pictures of exotic places sparked her desire to travel the world. At 19, she began saving tips to fulfill that dream. Through the years, she visited more than 40 countries. At one point, she finds herself in Somalia, and after being there just 4 days, is kidnapped and kept for over a year. Her “house in the sky” is the memories she uses to escape the atrocities she must endure while in captivity. This is her story.—Review by Susan Rayle
The Pilgrim Messiah: A Novel Drawn from the Gospel of Mark by Dr. Richard Cheatham, a United Methodist clergyman, tells the story of Jesus of Nazareth as a real person, making him seem genuine flesh and understandable, that can sometimes be lost in the translation of Mark’s Gospel. The narrative depicts Jesus and his followers, the twelve disciples and Mary Magdalene, as they grow to understand the man they called Master.
The author brings the reader into Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and all the way to the end at Golgotha. This is an awesome read found in the UMW Spiritual Growth section of our FUMC library.—Review by Carol Steele
What About Our Money? A Faith Response by Susan Taylor. “As we discern the ways we earn, inherit, borrow, invest, spend, give, or waste money, often without conscious choice or deliberate faith stance, we will be enabled to respond more fully to God.” How would you describe your relationship with money? Faithful money decisions can strengthen our relationship with God, empower us to give, and free us to live out his call. Read this book to learn what the Bible has to say about money through all our stages of life!—Review by Marsha Jones
Without You, There Is No Us: Undercover Among the Sons of North Korea’s Elite by Suki Kim. The author, a young journalist, goes undercover to teach English to an elite group of young North Korean males. We know so little about what goes on in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, yet this book opens the door a crack for us to view lives of censorship, paranoia, fear, and fierce national loyalty. I was moved by the relationship and devotion the author was able to foster in spite of the cult-like atmosphere that was the students’ world.—Review by Linda Fogleman
