Cordial Welcome:We welcome all who worship today at the Episcopal Church of St. Peter by-the-Lake. Visitors are asked to sign the guest register in the Narthex. Everyone is invited to the Parish Hall for food and fellowship immediately following the service.

Communion:Visitors accustomed to receiving Holy Communion in their own church are welcome to do so at St. Peter’s. Also, if one is unable to come to the altar rail, contact an Usher prior to the service and communion will be brought to you.Worship:Worship in our Episcopal Church community should be characterized by a combination of both tolerance and respect for others. If during worship you need to exit the nave (sanctuary) or return, please consider the appropriate times to return during the liturgy: times of congregational singing (hymns) or speaking (the creed); or at the peace. Please try to refrain from leaving or entering during times of prayer/confession and during the sermon. Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you.Children:Worship in our Episcopal Church Community should be characterized by a combination of both tolerance and respect for others. Children are always welcome in worship, but if your child should become 'inconsolable', please consider quietly moving into the Narthex or Fotinos Hall until your little one 'settles down'. Remember that we have a fully staffed nursery (infants – 2 yrs.) downstairs for your convenience.Want to know more? Please speak to a greeter or a member of the clergy to get more information. 6. For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord,

7. you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father,

3. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant: O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call

upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: Amos 7:7-15Reader: This is what the Lord God showed me: the Lord was standing

beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,

“See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by;the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the very centre of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos has said,

'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.' "

And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom."

Then Amos answered Amaziah, "I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore trees, and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'”

6. For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord,

7. you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father,

8 I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, *for he is speaking peace to his faithful peopleand to those who turn their hearts to him.

9 Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, *that his glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth have met together; *righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

11 Truth shall spring up from the earth, *and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

12 The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, *and our land will yield its increase.

13 Righteousness shall go before him, *and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

THE SECOND READING: Ephesians 1:3-14Reader: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who

has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 6:14-29Gospeller: King Herod heard of Jesus and his disciples, for Jesus’ name

had become known. Some were saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.” But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”

For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.” And he solemnly swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.” Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

THE NICENE CREED 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

WAYS TO SERVE† SUNDAY BULLETIN ITEMS are due in Church office by 10:00 am on the prior

Wednesday. Please submit them by email to [email protected] as a Word document or place a hardcopy in the mailbox for Parish Administrator.

† ADULT CHOIR PRACTICE Sunday morning practices at 9:30AM.

REQUESTS† REQUESTS FOR PRAYER -- To make a prayer request for a loved one or a

community or a national concern to be offered up on Sunday mornings, record the name on the prayer list beside the Guest Register in the Narthex. If the concern is ongoing and you would like the name also listed in the NET and prayed for on Sunday mornings on a rotating basis over a long period, circle the name on the list. Confidential prayer can be requested using the blue DOK prayer cards in the pews. Prayer requests received on the DOK cards are kept confidential and are not spoken on Sunday mornings, but are prayed for by all DOK members daily for one month or longer, if requested on the card.

CHURCH NEWS & EVENTS † SATURDAY BREAKFAST AT STACYS If you would like to receive emails

regarding activities of the men in the Church, send your email address to [email protected] (and we will add you to this year's list.) Anyone without email can call David Pittinaro (704) 483-0322, and we will set up a calling list.

† FLAT JESUS RETURNS! The basic idea is that members (adults AND kids) decorate a picture of Jesus to take on their summer adventures – be it near or far (again, it does not have to be ONLY children!). Members take pictures of themselves standing with Flat Jesus in places they visit and things they do, and email them to me at [email protected].  Kina will collect and post the pictures so that everyone can see your Great Commission with Jesus this summer! The challenge for you and your adventure with Flat Jesus this summer, is to not only send back pictures of cool and interesting places he visits, but also to tell at least one person this summer that God loves them, and snap a picture of them with your Flat Jesus!

† CHRISTIAN FORMATION - WE'RE LISTENING...... The Christian Formation team would like to know what you are most interested in learning about in the upcoming year. A survey (for both adults & children) was placed in everyone's mailboxes a few weeks ago with several options for you to choose from. Please complete your surveys and return them to Kina as soon as possible so that planning for the Fall classes can be completed.

† BOXES, BOXES, BOXES Christian Formation is in need of packing boxes for temporary storage during construction. If you have any please let Kina know. Thank you.

† EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EFM) It's July! That means it's time to start thinking about the upcoming session of EFM. For those that may not be familiar with EFM, it is a 4-year certificate program sponsored by The University of the South (Sewanee). It includes studies of the Old & New Testaments, the history of Christianity, and theology. Cost is involved and participants commit to 1 year at a time. There are openings for 2-3 new Year 1 participants. Class meets Wednesday evenings at 7pm September - May. If you are interested or would like to know more, please contact Father Ron or Sherree Brady. Both returning & new participants need to confirm their participation for the upcoming year by the end of July.

† ALTAR FLOWERS Flowers beautify the sacred spaces of our church and are a gift to God and those who attend our worship services. It is our tradition in the Episcopal Church to use only fresh flowers in all parts of the church, Nave, Parish halls, and Memorial Garden. That is not to say that we can’t combine them or enhance them with dried or treated plant material. The cost of Altar flowers is funded through generous donations to the Flower Fund and not through a line item in the church budget. A contribution to the Flower Fund is a meaningful way to honor or remember a loved one. It is also tax deductible. Dedications made during the Lenten season are for greenery rather than flowers. For any questions, please contact the Flower Committee.

† THE SCHOOL YEAR IS COMING It's still July here at the lake, but Sunday School will be returning before we know it. This year it will look a little different.  We will be introducing a new curriculum entitled "Whirl All Kids Sunday School".  This new program will allow all of our Prek-5th Graders to worship together in one place, giving our older kids and opportunity to mentor our younger kids each week.  As usual, we will always need two adults each week to help them out.  Can you take a couple of weeks over the next few months to help out? If so, please list your name on the sign up sheet in Fotinos Hall.  Please see Kina if you have any questions.  Thanks for your help with this children' ministry.

† HESED HOUSE BENEFIT CONCERT In August, the Hesed House of Hope will celebrate 10 years of serving Lincoln County. To celebrate, they are holding a benefit concert on August 3rd featuring Christian artist, Jason Crabb. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Please visit their web site (www.hesed-lincoln.org) for more information.

† NEWS FROM THE LAKE NORMAN COVEKEEPERS Our June 2 kayaking event on Mountain Island Lake was wonderful fun; we saw a great blue heron, several ospreys, and a large turtle while paddling around an area of the lake much less developed than Lake Norman. The often pristine shoreline conveyed a sense of being in the wilderness. The Lake Norman Covekeepers will not meet again formally until the fourth Thursday in September; all meetings are open to the general public. Thank you to all of you who have attended our meetings this past year and supported our efforts to protect our water quality, preserve the environment, and educate the public on issues of importance. For more information about activities over the summer on Lake Norman and in the Catawba River basin, please visit www.catawbariverkeeper.org. For local information or to report environmental concerns (violations of the buffer, sedimentation and erosion, etc.), contact Lincoln County Lakekeeper, Ben Benoit (704-489-6249) or any Covekeeper. Have a safe and enjoyable summer on the lake!
