Opening Choir Song “In the Winter of the Year” Lyrics & Music by Jeff Whitmill

In the winter of the year we are called together here

to await the coming of the Son. As we gather in this place, Lord, we seek your holy grace; give us courage now to face what we have done.

In the winter of the year, to a stable drawing near, as we keep our vigil through the night, ake our lives and set us free, make us all that we can be, give us wisdom now to see your holy light.

refrain: Lord, how long will it take for the pow’r of love to break

through the masquerade of all the things we fear?

Then for grace do we pray, as we wait the coming day, as we wait in the winter of the year

In the winter of the year there are angels hovering near, and we sense the time will not be long, for the heavens are ablaze with their canticle of praise, and with them we gladly raise our voice in song.

refrain

In the winter of the year comes the child that we hold dear, and throughout the world the song will ring: “Fear ye not, be of good cheer, for your Lord is drawing near.”

Give us willing hearts to hear the newborn King.

Do Not be Afraid

Scene 1 A Grown –up and child sit on Child’s bed as they finish reading a bedtime story. They discuss child’s fears at bedtime.

Luke 1: 26-38

“What Child is This” Music Plays in the background

The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. He came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God.

And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Scene 2 Mary is working around the home. She is wiping down a counter or preparing food when the angel Gabe suddenly appears and visits Mary. The Angel Gabe speaks with excitement, a little over the top, and with a little air of mystery when asked how this will happen. Mary is a bit skeptical of this sudden and surprising visitor and message until she decides she’s in.

Luke 1: 39-45

“O Come O Come Emmanuel”, Music Plays in the background

Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy.

And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

Scene 3 Elizabeth is sitting on a couch eating something weird like ice cream and pickles. Off-screen, the doorbell rings and Mary arrives to visit her. Elizabeth’s baby leaps in her belly when Mary approaches and she excitedly blurts out her response. Mary exclaims this good news with great joy!

Matthew 1:18 -25

“O Come All Ye Faithful”, Music Plays in the background

When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” ll this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”

When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Scene 4 Joseph is lying on his back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He has just spoken to Mary and is feeling very troubled about what she shared. An angel visits him in a dream, appearing on screen in an unexpected way, and tells him with certainty and care to not be afraid.

Scene 5 Child and Grown-up sit on Child’s bed and discuss all the questions Child has surrounding this mysterious story.

Luke: 2: 1-3

“Coventry Carol”, Music Plays in the background

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. All went to their own towns to be registered.

Scene 6 With great pomp and circumstance, Caesar walks up to a tall podium or stands on a tall riser and addresses a large crowd. Caesar can be at the top of a staircase, an outdoor play structure, or a tall patio.

Luke 2: 4-6

“O Little Town of Bethlehem”, Music Plays in the background

Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.

Scene 7 Joseph and Mary arrive in Bethlehem and find a place to stay after a very long journey. Mary is really tired and looking forward to a little comfortable rest.

Scene 8 Child and Grown-up discuss the absence of a birth scene in the story and introduce the setting of the shepherds in a field.

Luke 2: 8-16

“Angels We Have Heard on High”, Music Plays in the background

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people. To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” when the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger.

Scene 9 Shepherds are watching over their sheep.

Matthew 2: 1-12

“The First Noel”, Music Plays in the background

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising and have come to pay him homage.”

When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

“‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Scene 10 The Magi have quick comedic timing. They are like triplets who think alike and always talk right on top of

each other, practically interrupting each other. They also encounter King Herod.

Scene 11 Child and Grown-up discuss the “end” of the story.

Scene 12 Magnificat Luke 1:47 - 55

And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever." Amen

Choir “Save a Little Christmas” Lyrics and Music by Jeff Whitmill

The tree is up, our hopes are, too; there’s magic in the air. The cards are sent, the shopping’s through, and smiles are ev’rywhere. We’re sitting by a blazing fire, just looking at the snow. The children sing: An angel choir, with their faces aglow.

A special time for drawing near, when winter seems so cold; A time to see, a time to hear, a time to have and hold; A time to wait, a time to rest and feel a certain thrill; A time when all the world is blessed, full of peace and good will.

refrain

Christmas is here - time of love, time of cheer - but we know that the season will end; So, while Christmas is here, and there’s nothing to fear can’t we save a little Christmas, save a little Christmas, can’t we save a little Christmas for the rest of the year?

But if we see, and if we hear, and if we understand, why do we turn, why do we fear to take a stranger’s hand?

What of this child? What of this birth?

What of what was begun

can bring the angels’ song to earth: Peace for ev’ryone?

refrain

If once a year the wars can cease, then we can make a start, for once we raise a song of peace, we’re singing from the heart. So, come, and celebrate this birth, and think what God has done, and bring the peoples of the earth all together as one.

refrain

Online “Children’s Church” !

We understand that a longer online worship might not work for every family and every situation. That is why we will be coming to you with a 15-minute family-friendly worship experience. You will find Pr. Jeff leading a lively song or two on guitar, a scripture reading, a short 5-minute message, prayers, and a “take-it-with-you” idea to help your children connect the message to their week. Our kid’s bulletin is also still available for you to print off and enjoy too! Check out our church website for the links each week, listed under “Kid’s Church”. We hope that these additional worship opportunities provide an enriching worship experience for you and your family during this time of social distancing and COVID-19.

Meditation and Prayer Space

We have a safe spot for meditation and prayer set up in the sanctuary. There are candles and a fountain with soothing water sounds. Kneelers are available or chairs. Please wear your mask at all times. There are no restrictions as to use when the building is open. A sign up could be set up if there is high use. Times available 8-4 M-F, 8:30-11 Sunday

Worship Is Live on Facebook Our worship is released as a Facebook Live worship service. The service is still pre-recorded, but we launch it on Face-book at 9:00AM. This provides an opportunity for our community to worship together and in-teract with one another. It went great last week! If you have not followed our Fa-cebook page, you can do so by clicking here. If you are not on Facebook, the worship service is still accessible on our website.

M&M Challenge

Time to return the tubes of mini M&Ms.

The plan is that you get to eat the treat then fill the tube with quarters (or any other kind of money) and return to the church. We will have a spot on the big round table in the narthex for the tubes. A tube will hold $14 in quarters! The money we collect will be divided between two pro-jects. Our youth are shopping and assembling shoeboxes for Shoebox Christmas and then for St. Pauls, our companion congregation in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. St. Pauls boiler is in need of repair and they need help. Please return the tubes soon.

New Directories

If you come to the pledge parade or stop in for any other reason, you will be handed your new directory. They will be in the narthex for pick up any time M-F 8-4:30 and Wednesday nights until 8 pm, Sunday morning 8:30-11 am.

IOCP Food Cart There are many folks that will be hungry this Christmas. Food and personal care items are desperately needed. St. Barnabas is collecting food items for Interfaith Outreach. All supplies and food are needed, but complete meals, protein rich foods, feminine hygiene products, diapers, and TP are especially needed. Bring it to the shopping cart in the narthex. We will make sure it gets to the food shelf in a timely manner.
