From our Pastor… If your friends ask you about Lent, you can inform them of these facts: The word is actually rendered Lencten in

Old English, meaning “lengthening of day-light hours.” The days are getting longer, symbolizing Christ’s light, power and grace through our cooperation of leaving behind our worldly ways and growing in holiness.

Lent is the 40-day period of penance, prayer, fasting and almsgiving before Easter. There are several ways we do penance, or voluntar-ily denying ourselves goods of this world.

We don’t eat meat on Ash Wednesday or Good Friday. Christ gave up his own flesh on Good Friday, and so we give up meat in honor of Christ’s sacrifice.

We are challenged to spend more time in prayer, especially reflecting on how much Christ endured for our sake during his passion.

We fast, denying ourselves certain foods, drink or pleasurable activities that are other-wise acceptable, reminding us of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the desert and a call for us to not be so attached to things of this world.

Almsgiving, or giving food or money to the poor, is an invitation in charity to help the poor, as Christ helps us who are spiritually poor.

Make this Lent one of the best ever! God’s Blessings,
