None of it goes for administrative costs as in American Red Cross and many other relief agencies. Our church denomination through its Board of Global Ministries provides UMCOR’s administration. There will be a place for you to give credit to our church too. If you wish to contribute by phone, call 1-888-252-6174. You can contribute by putting an envelope in the offering plate, again being careful to write the advance # on the envelope. If you are interested in knowing what is happening in the relief efforts, you can go to UMCOR.com on-line and indicate program. There is a daily accounting of action being taken. For instance, this week “The Florida Annual Conference of the U.M. Church has been asked by FEMA to lead the case management task force in Florida.” If you check on this occasionally, you will see that as the offering prayer mentions “blessing our gifts as they are used to further God’s kingdom,” some of it does go to help others who are in need. We play a part in relieving the suffering in the world. Summary of Congregational Conversation #1

On September 30th we gathered for the first of a series of

conversations on our core values. There were nearly 30 people in attendance

for the first conversation. The conversation was facilitated by members of

the Mission Statement Team (the team), whose members are: Tom Hanson,

Rev. Carolyn Wik, Joy Baum, Gary Figi and myself. We began our

conversation giving the rationale for why we’re engaging in a process for

examining our core values and the planned outcome for the meeting. We

viewed the membership statistics for First Church from 2010 to 2016. From

2010 to 2016 First Church added 95 people to the membership, but

subtracted 203 people during the same period.

In the book: Values-Driven Leadership, Aubrey Malphurs defines

core values as: the constant, passionate, biblical core beliefs that drive

ministry (Malphurs 1996. p34). Malphurs goes on to say: Core Values

answers the question, why do we do what we do? (Malphurs 1996. p32).

After discussing the definition of what core values are, attendees completed

a core values audit. Each attendee left the meeting with a document that

showed the results of the audit alongside our current core values. Attendees

were asked to review the document in preparation for our next meeting on

Saturday, October 28th from 11am to 12:30pm.

Want to pray for a relative or a friend who

needs help from our Heavenly Father and Son

Jesus? We serve continental breakfast in the office

conference room. By coming early in the morning,

you can be to work on time. Always a great way to

start your day. Come as you are.

If you want prayer warriors to pray for you or a relative, or

friend, remember you can fill out a prayer card from the pews or by the

prayer box which is located in the church library. Remember prayer works

Outreach is having their fall fundraising bake sale on November 19, (the Sunday before Thanksgiving). Perhaps this event can help us with desserts on Turkey Day. Proceeds will be used for Outreach activities such

as N.O.A.H. and charitable donations that Outreach selects each year. We hope to be able to do a second sandwich making project for N.O.A.H. in late winter. There's never a shortage of community needs, for sure. Please consider baking for this event. It will be much appreciated. Pies, cakes, cookies, whatever you feel like. This committee knows what a blessing the congregants are in this church. We'll be giving thanks for each of you on Thanksgiving Day! Sign-up flyers will be forthcoming in November bulletins.

The Outreach Committee would like to thank Thrivent Financial for their support of the dinner for South Oakland Shelter at Orchard Methodist.

This year the Giving Tree will be set up on November 19th. The ornaments have labels with gift wishes for the children in Children's Methodist Home and the seniors at the Costick Center. The Costick Center wants wrapped gifts with the person's name taped on each. The Methodist Children's Home, on the other hand, wants unwrapped gifts. The children's names aren't included for privacy reasons. The children's wishes are generic in nature for

ages ranging from 7 years thru 18. These people at both ends of the age spectrum need to be remembered. Thank you, in advance, for the generosity you show every Christmas season!

Men’s Breakfast on November 5th at 8 am!

Where else can you get fresh scrambled eggs, pork

sausage, potatoes O’Brian, and doughnuts along with an

assortment of cereal, oatmeal, fruit, OJ and coffee, all for a suggested good

will offering of $5?

Our speaker will be Rev. Faith Fowler, Pastor at Cass Community UMC

and Executive Director of Cass Community Social Services. She will speak

about the Tiny Home project in Detroit.

The Tiny Home project will build 25 homes ranging

from 250 to 400 sq. ft. over the next few years. The homes

will be sold via a “rent to own” program at the rate of $1 a

square foot per month. At the end of the program the

renters will own the home.

It’s a real honor to have her as our speaker, don’t miss this one!

Books & Bitəs

Books & Bitәs is not meeting in November. The next meeting will be December 17, 2017 at 2:00pm (please note the new time) in the Markham Room. (Alternate location is the church library.) The book is A Christmas Beginning by Anne Perry. Superintendent Runcorn of Scotland Yard is spending Christmas on a wild and beautiful island

off the north coast of Wales. On one of his solitary strolls, the lonely bachelor stumbles upon a lifeless body in the village churchyard. An outsider in the drawing rooms of the snobbish local gentry, Runcorn searches for the answer to the murder. At the December meeting, we are also having a cookie exchange. Details will appear in the December Gospel Truth.

Books & Bitәs is open to women and girls ages 12 and up (ages 12-15 need to be accompanied by a mom or substitute mom). Call Jennie Macy at (248) 521-8546 with questions. We hope you will join us!

The books that we read and discuss are selected by the group. We encourage mothers and fathers to read the books to be sure they are appropriate for their daughter.

A Ugandan coffee farmer visiting New York witnessed

the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. He

came away from this event with strong emotions

about religious conflict. Why should people be

enemies because of their religions?

These are all children’s picture books and can be found in the Farmington Library.

Nasreddine is also in our church library, in the children’s room on the shelf below the

chapter books.

Book Review – Guidelines for Leading Your Congregation. 2017-2020 The church library recently added twenty-six booklets in a set called “Guidelines for Leading Your Congregation.” There is one for all church leadership areas, covering topics including, but not limited to each committee: Sunday school teachers, Church Council, Finance, Stewardship, Youth, Worship and Membership. The booklets are tools that help new lay leaders get off to a good start as well as a reference resource for all lay leaders. Each booklet includes the basic "job description" for the leader as well as practical "how-to" information important to implementing ministry effectively. Brief and to the point, making it a perfect resource for the busy, but spirit-led leader. Even if you are not a church leader you can benefit from these brief instructions encouraging us to nurture, reach out, and witness. The booklets are shelved together in a box labeled with the call number 254. They are intended to be borrowed individually.

Building Restoration Concert fundraiser – so many people needed

to make this happen. I can’t possibly remember everyone to thank

– starting with the office staff, Doug T and Dan L, music

department tuning piano, ticket sales, sound assistance and the help

and wonderful donations that made the “afterglow” such a success.

The church was full – the music was great!! We raised $880. We

will get the north wall done – eventually – with each dollar raised.

at the bottom of the stairs on your way to Wesley Hall. We

have clothes, dishes, jewelry and many more things. You might

find something you lost and don’t know it.

e’re not that different from Joseph. True, we may not be part of a story that will be remembered for

all time, but like Joseph, we encounter circumstances that we’d never choose for ourselves. At times, it can be tempting just to walk away, but Joseph

provides us a great example of humbly obeying God even when we don’t understand, faithfully moving forward in the

strength that God provides. Join Adam Hamilton as he examines Christmas through the eyes of Joseph and learn

to accept and glorify God’s will even when our situation makes it difficult to do so (Cokesbury.com).

During the Advent season our Youth and Children will also be studying “Faithful” during Sunday School because Adam Hamilton has also

made this study into a Youth and Children study.

Caroling: 2:00 PM – meet at the church to carpool; two groups will disperse to sing at member’s homes Wesley Hall: 5:00 PM -- gather for a light supper (meal provided for participants) Parade: 6:00 PM (gather in parking lot around 5:40) let our light shine as we march in Farmington’s lighted parade! It’s a short walk on Grand River from our church to the Warner mansion. Call Debbie Miller regarding caroling or Judy Phillips regarding the parade for any questions. Our Methodist Men’s Club

annual “Christmas Wreaths and Decorations” sale is

now underway. The club uses money earned from

the sale to support numerous church needs and

charitable programs. Look for Methodist Men club

members selling holiday wreaths, roping,

centerpieces and grave blankets in Wesley Hall during coffee hour. Last day

to place your order this year is Sunday, November 12th. Orders may be

UMW Fall Rummage Sale Update If you were in church on Sunday, October 8th you saw Sherry Young present the 3rd graders with their own personalized Bibles. This is just one of the many things that UMW does with money earned from the rummage sale. Start the New Year with a Bible Study.

If you have taken Disciple 1, then you are

available to join us on Wednesday nights from 7:00-9:00 pm beginning,

January 10, 2018. We will study The Prophets from January to May, then

study The Letters of Paul beginning in September, 2018 and finishing in

2019. The cost of the workbook will be around $39.00, if you have a Kindle

or “e-book” device the workbook is available through that venue. Amazon

also offers used copies for discounted prices.

Beginning, Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 1:00-3:00 pm

we will be studying “Jesus in the Gospels”. This study

looks very closely at the Gospel texts and also compare

the different narratives of the same event in each of the

Gospels. The class also includes Old Testament

scriptures as well. You can take this study even if you

have not taken Disciple. The workbook is $39 and a

comparison study book is also available for $17.00. You

Bob joined the clinical staff of SCC in February of 2008, and served as Executive Director from 2012 until his retirement in 2016. Bob’s compassion, curiosity, whimsy, dedication, and tenderness continue to send ripples of hope and healing into the future of the lives he touched directly, and into the community he served.
