The Flour Mill arrived in Summer Hill in 1922: a cluster of functional milling and

storage buildings, built by Mungo Scott to process wheat from across New South Wales into flour for toast on the breakfast tables of the ever-growing city of Sydney.

The landmark silos appeared in the 1950s, as Goodman Fielder grew the Mill’s capacity; followed by Allied Mills, who continued to supply the key ingredient for many of Australia’s favourite loaves – until operations were wound up in 2009.

The experienced team at EG recognised the unique opportunity that this well loved, workhorse of a site provided – and knew they could create a truly special residential community and bespoke retail spaces. The design process included wide-ranging community consultation; ensuring their vision completely complemented the character of lovely Summer Hill surrounding the site, and yet still respected the essential history there.

And so the Flour Mill of Summer Hill has emerged, revitalising this beloved monument to the city’s rich industrial heritage.

The master plan, so carefully developed by HASSELL, focuses on repurposing

as much of the industrial fabric of the site as possible – with an environmentally and socially sustainable outcome.

It is a blueprint where parkland, pedestrian areas and new internal streets seamlessly connect the apartments and terrace homes – also designed by HASSELL – with their wider environment. The past is not erased, but rather becomes the foundation for a new, dynamic and contemporary neighbourhood.

The Flour Mill’s striking silo buildings have long been a beloved feature of the skyline, essential to the personality of the area. Everyone can participate in this latest adaptation of the storehouses, strolling through open walkways from the high street village atmosphere of Summer Hill through to the Flour Mill’s parklands, past new cafés and shops, to the light rail stop at Lewisham West.

Located just seven kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, the Flour Mill of Summer

The Malthouse cleverly connects the old with the new and the inside with the out.

The exterior of the Mill’s Malthouse celebrates the building’s industrial heritage – with angular rooflines imitating those of traditional Sydney cottages atop natural brick referencing the nearby Mungo Scott building – and its industrious future.

The intricately patterned brickwork, decorative metal screening and inviting colours engage residents and visitors alike.

A 20-metre high void illuminates the lobby with natural light. This bright welcome is carried through to each of the 98 balcony apartments – a mix of one, two and three bedrooms – which offer clear views either over the light rail corridor towards the city or the nearby parklands.

The Granary pays homage to the original buildings on site by mimicking their scale

and profile. The southern four storeys represent the workshop which was simply clad in corrugated iron sheeting, and the northern nine storeys reflect the adjoining timber silo. The two are now joined by a continuous textured skin that reveals the interior through layers of decorative perforated mesh and horizontal louvres. The Granary offers choices of one and two bedroom apartments.
