From the moment the church was founded by God, those on the outside have thought Christians were as crazed as loons in the full moon at midnight, and we are still crazy after all these years. We are called to be a community of believers just crazy enough to believe that caring about others is what we ought to do, and just crazy enough to think that we can, somehow, make a difference not by what we say but by what we do. At its best the true church is hospitable, disciple making, and outwardly focused. A chapel on the other hand looks inward, serving only those who are there, and concerned with its own survival. I recall hearing a District Superintendent say, some years ago at Annual Conference, that we have too many chapels and not enough churches. The self-indulgent, self-caring, self-absorbed nature of the chapel mentality is not Christian. From its very beginning, Christianity has been an outwardly focused movement. Jesus Christ did not go to the cross because he thought it might be an exciting way to spend a Friday afternoon. He did it for everyone but himself. We don’t build churches to be monuments or idols and we don’t build them for ourselves. Dearborn Good Shepherd UMC is not here for you or for me. This church was built so that we would have a safe place to bring the hurt and dying that are all around our church, so that they can be healed, just as you and I were healed, by the love of God through Jesus Christ. Let us go and seek them out. Let us go and bring them here. Let us go, without pride or selfishness, and offer them the risen Christ. It may sound crazy to some, but I guess we’re just “still crazy after all these years.” Pastor Doug

Still Crazy After All These Years This month’s title is not autobiographical, although many would argue that it should be. It was first made popular by two of my favorite theologians, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. It may sound crazy to some, but I guess we’re just “still crazy after all these years.”

Our next “auction” is Sunday, October 5th, and the funds collected will go to CROPWalk this month.

Lovely loaves of day-old bread from Panera Cares are available to bid on, and the resulting funds will go to one of our designated ministries: Potato Project, Food Pantry, Blessings in a Backpack, Baldwin Center, or any others that anyone wishes to suggest!

MANY THANKS!

When Mike Foster thought about his memorial gift for his wife, Lenore, he decided he wanted it to be “Just what Del needed for the cake room.” Fred and Irene did a lot of shopping and research to find the right height and sturdiness. They found two tables with butcher block tops and shelves which are ideal. Irene treated and finished the tops. I couldn’t be more pleased – what a relief for the back!

Thanks to Lenore, who gave so much of herself to God and this church, to Mike, Irene, and Fred, and to all who contributed to Lenore’s memorial fund! God’s blessings to all!

DEARBORN GOOD SHEPHERD UMC TO HOLD

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

All animals and their human companions are invited to a “Blessing of the Animals” here at Good Shepherd UMC on Saturday, October 11 at 10:00 AM. The Rev. Dr. Doug Ralston will conduct the blessings.

The celebration of animals is part of acknowledging the creative love that God has bestowed on the world. Blessing our animal companions honors how God touches humans through the creatures of God’s creation.

The first formal animal blessings were held in Rome in the early 20th century. Since that time churches of many denominations have lifted up the special relationship humans have with their animals and recognize them as God’s gift through

a special blessing.

Good Shepherd invites all to bring their animal companions for an individual blessing on Saturday, October 11. Dogs should be on leashes, and cats and other animals in appropriate cages.

LEARNING ABOUT GOD IS FUN! This year’s Sunday school offerings are different from previous years! As our children grow and change, so must our Sunday School!

Our Pre-K through 4th grades are using “VeggieTales” as their curriculum and meeting in the Fellowship Hall during Worship at 10:30 am. They have access to our new, really large flat screen television and lots of space to move around!

Our Tweens, grades 5th through 8th, are using Grapple, from Group Publishing, and meet in the Youth Room at 9:30 am. This is an entirely new age grouping for us at Good Shepherd!

We ask that you prayerfully consider leading one or the other of these groups. Sign-up sheets are at the Opportunity Center

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY IS OCTOBER 5 The first Sunday of October has become a time when Christians in every culture across the world break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm

Christ as the Head of the Church. On this day, we remember that we are part of the whole body of believers.

World Communion Sunday is also one of the six special offering Sundays when the United Methodist Church commits to making a difference in lives. This Sunday is dedicated to fund scholarships for national and international graduate students whom God has gifted to learn and to serve.

Around the globe, countless gifted and qualified people face financial obstacles that hinder them from preparing for the vocation God has given them, especially youth and young adults. For ethnic students who will be the first generation in their families to attend college, or for those people of color who haven’t historically had access to resources that make higher education possible, the road toward education has often been unwieldy.

One Woman’s Story

As a small child Mary Grace Galapon labored as a housemaid in exchange for food and clothing. Yet, allowed to attend church, she found hope. As a member of the United Methodist Church, your giving on World Communion Sunday has allowed this deaconess, of the Mindanao Phillipines Annual Conference, to pursue an education that is now changing her community as she works to eliminate poverty. Mary Grace’s work, and the impact of hundreds more like her, are possible because you give.

Please consider a gift towards educating students who can change our world.

SAVE THE DATE FOR UPCOMING ADVENT STUDY

The four weeks before Christmas is the season of Advent. Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation as we excitedly anticipate God's greatest gift, Jesus Christ. Just as we clean and organize our homes to make ready for a guest, Advent is when we prepare for the coming of our Savior. In order to be fully prepared to receive this gift, what cobwebs need to be cleared out of the nooks and crannies of our hearts? Are we holding on to hurts or hard feelings?

Come join us for “Forgiveness: Finding Peace Through Letting Go.” This important Advent study,

led by Pastor Doug, will help prepare us for an exciting new future walking with Christ into 2015.

The study will be November 19, December 3, 10, and 17 from 5:30 - 6:30 PM in Fellowship Hall. Each week a soup and bread dinner will be available. You are welcome to come early at 5 PM for the meal or simply enjoy it during the class time. On December 17, the study will culminate with a Service of Healing and Reconciliation.

OCTOBER MISSION OF THE MONTH

El Buen Pastor Children’s Programming and English as a Second Language

In Spanish, Good Shepherd means El Buen Pastor, so this United Methodist church in southwest Detroit holds a special place for us.

As part of our Spotlight mission giving program, we have the chance to support two important community initiatives coming out of El Buen Pastor UMC: Children’s Programming and English as a Second Language.

One recent success was a summer program for the neighborhood youth called Sugar Crush. There is nothing like a day filled with the laughter of children that are experiencing and learning new things!

Our help will bring new opportunities to the community surrounding El Buen Pastor.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO SIGN UP FOR HANDS 4 DETROIT Once again, Good Shepherd will participate in Hands 4 Detroit to bring hope to the city of Detroit. This year we will be cleaning and painting at two community centers: one in the Joy-Southfield

neighborhood and the other near El Buen Pastor UMC. The work day starts at 9 am on October 4. T-shirts are provided for volunteers. New this year-- bring your own lunch, bottled water is being provided by Absopure. Post work celebration starts at 2:00 p.m. with a short program at 3:30 p.m. at Cass Community Social Services on Woodrow Wilson in Detroit. This will be a picnic celebration with hot dogs, chips and bounce house for the kids all under the big top tent!

Contact the church office for more information on how to join us or visit the Hands 4 Detroit website, Hands4Detroit.org.

Other Hands 4 Detroit Happenings!

Art show, featuring local artists depicting the city and its peoples. September 27 – November 15, 2014. Gallery is open Thursday and Saturday, Noon – 6 PM. Opening reception is Saturday September 27th 1 to 4 p.m. Bring a non-perishable food item to donate.

Poetry Slam, Friday October 10th at 7:30 p.m. Come hear local poets and bring a non-perishable food item.

Both events held at the Swords into Plowshares Gallery at Detroit Central UMC, 23 E. Adams, Detroit MI 48226.

NATIONAL BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK DAY September 18 was National Blessings in a

Backpack Day and this marked the beginning of the backpack packing in Dearborn. We are proud to be a part of this program which provides weekend food for area

elementary students on the free or reduced lunch program.

In addition to the schools we supported last year, DuVall, Long, and Snow Elementary Schools; we have added Nowlin and Whitmore-Bolles this year! That's over 200 bags of food every weekend!

Dearborn Mayor O’Reilly was able to be present at the packing Thursday, the 18th! He presented the group with a proclamation naming September 18, 2014 Blessings in a backpack Day in the City of Dearborn!

BUILDING NEWS Stained Glass Repair

On Labor Day weekend, those in worship saw a strange site. One of the stained glass windows had been removed with only the clear glass remaining. The window was removed because one of the panes was loose which prevented us from opening the

window. It was so loose that the window had to be secured with duct tape to safely remove it.

The window was completely disassembled and releaded by a local craftsman, Tom Newton. It was remounted in early September; returned to the place it has occupied for 93 years.

Concrete Replacement Work recently began to replace concrete at both the Fellowship Hall and Mason Street entrances. Concrete has been deteriorating at both of these locations for some time. We celebrate the fact that more usable handrails will be available for those entering through the Fellowship Hall doors. A huge thank you to all who worked so hard to complete this project!

WHOSE JOB IS IT ANYWAY?

As we move into an exciting new future at Good Shepherd, we are reminded that we are all given special gifts that will further our ministries. All are called to do their part and to cheer on each other! Consider the following fun twist on words.

Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when

Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
