GARDEN GROUP

The Garden Group spent a lovely morning at thehome of Ann Lerch (pictured below on the right in ablue shirt). Arriving early to try to beat the heat weadmired Ann’s thriving vegetable garden and wan-dered along the paths between the tall trees admir-ing the beautifully laid out garden beds and the mag-nificent caladiums especially.Each member had brought along a plant that had abit of a history and was surplus to requirements, andwe spent a memorable half hour relating why ourplant meant so much to us.There was a pandan that came from Darwin and hadsurvived the rigours of painters cleaning their equip-ment on it and suffering the indignity of beingstepped on, and banana suckers and bananas(delicious) that had come from the parent tree thathad come from a neighbouring property, and a flow-ering succulent that had been given as a get well gift,and lots more stories all very interesting and heartwarming.Then we spent a happy few minutes each choosingone of the offerings to take home and plant in ourown gardens to enjoy.The expertise of several of the members was utilisedto identify a plant that had been bought on spec at agarage sale for 50c and the owner wanted to be sureit wasn’t going to become rampant in her garden.Pictured is Gail poring over it and Noela thoughtfullylooking on and offering advice.

It has been decided that next year the Garden Groupwill meet on a Wednesday instead of Friday whichwill suit most of our members much better.

The Garden Group and Book Groupwill meet for a combined Christmas gettogether on Wednesday December 9.For more information call Noela on

News from the Shire with Cr Sandy BoltonHello Foresters!Coming up to the festive season is always an opportu-nity to take stock of the year and reflect on the future.The last 12 months have seen a number of initiativesand efforts that have formed a solid base for a newCouncil to work from in 2016.With both the Social Strategy and Local Economic Plancompleted, it is now just a matter of resourcing and en-suring the priorities are tackled efficiently and moni-tored to completion.The importance of this LEP cannot be understated – astrengthened local economy ensures the security of ourbeautiful environment, and the accompanying lifestyleenjoyed by all.Sitting on a number of community forums including theCooroy Youth Network, and regional advisory boardssuch as Primary Health, it has been invaluable to beinvolved in developing partnerships to address the‘gaps’ that have been prevalent across a number ofsectors including aged care and disability services.For Cooroy, the opening of the RV stop, the launch ofthe Noosa Country Drive, and the commencement ofthe sealing of Dr Pages Rd and design for the Myall StIntersection and pedestrian issues on both east andwest of the rail are welcomed outcomes after manyyears on the ‘wish list’.And to finally have a ‘whole of shire’ map will assist notonly in promoting country tourism, but help our relativesfind our many attractions when they come to visit!The other side to the highlights is our challenges.Across the shire neighbour conflict continues to be ofconcern, and the need for good communication, empa-thy and the preparedness for compromise over pets,renovations, BBQ’ing, fences, and land uses cannot beoverstated.Whether the issue seems small, or is much larger, indi-viduals and communities prosper by working it out to-gether and avoiding Council intervention.Following an official path often causes greater conflictand utilizes much-needed operational resources, andwe all agree we would like to see our ratepayer dollarspent on assets and initiatives instead of refereeingand policing.The Cooroy Hall is a wonderful legacy from the grand-mothers, mothers, sisters, aunts and daughters of ourmen who went to war. Please give of your time andattend the meeting on December 9 to ensure that this‘great lady’ remains with us for another hundred years.An agreeance by the whole community is essential asto her future, which could include being managed byone of our incorporated community organizations.There were some phone calls from Cooroy residentsregarding the Council Kerbside pickup and the length oftime pre pickup that goods were sitting outside. Pleasepass on the word for next time to only put out the day

before collection to avoid trip hazards and visualamenity.It is that time of the year to take a day out and pre-pare for the storm, flood and fire season. Handytips are available at https://getready.qld.gov.au/be-prepared, and I urge you to get your emergencyplan together so that you remain safe in all situa-tions.To finish, it has been an honour to serve my‘extended family’ over this past term. I look for-ward to seeing everyone at Christmas in Cooroyor at one of the many community celebrationsover the festive season, and to representing youagain in 2016.Warmest regards and Merry Christmas to all…RegardsCr Sandy Bolton

Letters to the EditorWell I can report some good came out of New Zealand'svictory in rugby.Yesterday I gave Debbie money to buy ice creams for thekids at Noosa's New Zealand Ice Cream shop.She returned with ice creams and the money. It turns outthat we arrived at just the right time as they had sched-uled one hour of free ice creams for all to celebrate NewZealand's winning the Rugby World Cup.So naturally, deciding it would be impolite of me not toshare in this celebration as well, I went and got my freeHokey Pokey ice cream.Greg, Koala Crescent

In response to your story about cracking cups and tea-pots, an interesting thing happened to me.I use a little glass jug to mix my milk powder and one day lused the remaining milk then put the jug in sink with me-dium /hot water to wash it.Bang! the bottom cracked right around and the jug andbase parted company.Moral of story: don't put any glass container from fridgeinto hot water until it has adjusted to room temperature.Sandy, Koala Crescent

I thought I should mention the kindness of our neighboursHoward & Mary Griffin, who a few months ago sent out anemail via the old email contact list that they had some ex-cess grapefruit available to give away.As I was at work the day the email came, it was not untillater that evening that I had a chance to phone Mary andsadly for us all the grapefruit had gone.She did mention that there were still a few fruit on thetrees, and since then has dropped grapefruit in a bag atour letterbox a few times knowing that we love them.First they were from her own tree and then her neighbourMaren’s tree (she also had too many). I phoned each timeto thank Mary, but felt it was really kind of her to go out ofher way often to do that.Anne-Maree, Kelly Court

I was climbing over the low chicken wire fence into aneighbouring property carrying my little dog when some-thing moved under me. It was a python (pictured right)tangled up in the fence and I got a helluva fright and liter-ally threw the dog over the fence.I called out to my neighbour whom I could see in the gar-den, and she decided discretion was the better part ofvalour as it was very aggressive, and called the snakecatcher who freed it in moments.Resident, Killlawarra Rd

Sharing with the wildlifeA pythonesque adventure

It is always heart-warming to know you are surroundedby people who care about wildlife. But then, abundantwildlife is one of the attractive features about living inForest Acres!Kelly Court’s Anne-Maree Pollari is one such carer;she was driving along Forest Acres Drive in early Octo-ber when she spotted a large python traversing theroad, no doubt enjoying the heat from the bitumen.“What a magnificent huge old python he was, too,stretched right across the road,” she said.Anne-Maree stopped to help encourage the snake offthe road for safety’s sake.A number of other drivers took action to allow the proc-ess to occur.“It was great to see everyone slow down so carefullyand drive around the snake,” she said.It’s not Anne-Maree's first time she has seen wildlife onlocal roads.“I remember a few years back, latish one evening com-ing down the hill heading towards home and there, sit-ting right in the middle of the concrete bridge over SixMile Creek, was a large chubby koala,” she said.“A few of us stopped to make sure it moved awaysafely. So nice to see.”The Forest Star thanks Anne-Maree, and everyoneelse who drives carefully in the area to avoid hittingwildlife, especially in the dusk and dawn periods whenthey are most active.Snake on a hot wood roofAnneke and Robert’s anniversary (see page 3) alsoattracted feathered guests-but their presence in turnattracted a scaly one the following day.Two king parrots en-joyed the anniversarycelebrations on anearby feedingperch (how goodis that), but thentheir place wastaken next day by arather large python,

no doubt looking for afeed of bird, and also nodoubt having observedthe birds there over afew days.You would wonder howa snake on the ground

would be able to seebirds 5 feet in the air on a

feeding perch.

Magnesium deficiency: stress in body and mindAs Kinesiologist and Folkdance teacher I often meetpeople with muscle cramps, nervous tension, head-aches, joint aches, shaking hands and spurs in heelsor joints.My first thought goes then to magnesium deficiency:a muscle relaxant.Australia is very low on magnesium in the soil, mean-ing all foods grown here can’t supply us with well-balanced levels. Even cattle can suffer from defi-ciency, which is why farmers place a salt block intheir yard for the cows to lick. Magnesium is part ofthe salt chemistry. And we as humans are told to eatlow-salt food, as ‘it is not good for you’…Magnesium relaxes vessel in the vascular system,supporting optimum delivery of life-sustaining bloodand plays an important role with bone density.We in general have a good level of calcium in ourdiet, however if magnesium is lacking, we get calcifi-cation in the arteries or spurs growth in e.g. our heelsor joints.Magnesium makes calcium available to the bones, soa lack of magnesium may be one of the causes ofosteoporosis, together with other factors like lack ofsunlight on the skin, little or no weight-bearing exer-cises, hormonal imbalance.In my practise I regularly see clients with an intoler-ance response to magnesium, which can be helpedto overcome with a Kinesiology treatment.Another deficiency symptom is hyperactive children:magnesium relaxes the mind!And with the stressful times before the end of theyear, we all can do with some extra magnesium!For more articles, please have a look at my Facebookpage: Health & Harmony CentreEnjoy the festive time and relax!– Anneke Cook, Kinesiologist.

West Cooroy Broiler Farm Update

After three years of deliberations, pro-posal revisions, and conflicting scientificreports, and spanning two councils,Noosa councillors voted to reject the Co-oroy broiler farm application at the 19 November Ordi-nary Meeting. The vote was carried six votes to onewith only Cr Abbot supporting the application.

The reasons for refusal are:1. The proposed poultry farm does not comply with the

Overall Outcomes of The Noosa Plan’s Mary RiverCatchment Locality, Agricultural Uses and Trans-port, Roads and Drainage Codes;

2. The proposed poultry farm does not achieve suffi-cient separation distance from surrounding resi-dences and properties, so as to avoid adverseodour impacts on amenity;

3. The odour modelling carried out by the applicantdoes not provide sufficient assurance that nearbyresidents will not be adversely impacted by odour;

4. The proposal will result in actual and perceivedloss of amenity to nearby residents;

5. Traffic generated by the development will havesignificant adverse impacts on the existing roadnetwork and on the amenity of residents livingalong the haul route;

6. The proposed sheds and earthworks necessaryfor shed construction are likely to adversely impacton the scenic amenity of the area; and

7. It has not been clearly demonstrated that the pro-posed poultry farm will not generate unacceptablelevels of dust, other particulates and ammonia thatmay impact on the amenity of nearby residents.

Thanks to the many Forest Star readers who havesupported us over the years, this is a big win for theCooroy community.A happy festive season to all.Rod Ritchie Convenor No Broiler Farm Cooroywww.cooroybroilerfarm.com/

CARA exists to provide a forum for residentdiscussion and to bring the community together

Notes from the CARA AGM 26 November The past 12 months has seen several

development applications in our areaconsidered by the Noosa Council, notably theCooroy Highway Service Centre, The TomatoFarm, and the Cooroy Broiler Farm.

Following council elections next year, the newNoosa Council will embark on the huge task ofrewriting the Noosa Plan. To gather ideas onchanges that would benefit the Cooroy area,CARA hosted a Cooroy planning breakfast lastMarch at the Bowls Club, which was attendedby about 50 people.

After the horrific accident at the intersection ofSwift Road and Lake Macdonald Drive, CARAhas decided to host a public meeting in 2016that looks at road and traffic issues such asspeed limits, parking issues, pedestriancrossings, the Elm Street Bridge congestion,cycle lanes, signage, traffic calming, noiseissues, and accident procedures.

Future CARA information nights will includeMeet the Council Candidates (March 2016) andan EDV debate.

2015 has been an interesting year for theresidents of the Cooroy area and 2016 lookslike having plenty of issues to bring beforeresidents. To help us, local resident Peter Lylehas generously agreed to join the managementcommittee.

TRIVIA NIGHT 2015

We got everyone in and fed, watered and raring to answerquestions by 7pm. There was a bit of confusion aboutwho was sitting at whose table but Noela sorted that out,or rather the players sorted it out between them in highgood spirits.Lyn sold three books of raffle tickets - it must have beenthe really fantastic prizes that spurred people on.After a bit of a glitch with the roaming microphone (youhave to hold it just at the right angle or it clams up andwon’t work - but Dell put us right) things went swimmingly.Even when the MC made a bit of a dogs breakfast withthe “hands on heads/hands on tails” part of the event noone minded, and one of the contestants came to his aidand it all got sorted out.There were teams that had been to every Trivia Night thatthe Forest Star has put on and some teams that werenew. There was a bit of a worry a week before the eventthat there wouldn’t be enough contestants and we mayhave to cancel, but Robyn Kildey did an amazing job ofrounding up her friends and threatening them with untoldconsequences if they didn’t turn up. Gary James did thesame with his friends. So between Robyn’s friends andGary’s friends and the locals who were late to let us knowthey were coming, there were plenty of people. Thank youGary and Robyn.The raffle prizes were all very well received with two luckycontestants winning more than one each. The life sizeknitted garden elf went over very well with the whole roomclapping and cheering when the winner put up her hand.She said that she had no idea what she would do with itbut by the end of the evening had decided to give it to aninfant in her family - perfect.

All in all a great night and I want to thank everyone whoattended and made it so, including Noela and Lyn who didthe tallying and did a great job with it.See a list of the donors of the raffle prizes on page 11

The Occasional ColumnCats. They own our hearts. They own their owners.And they definitely own the internet.From the Pharaohs to TS Eliot, humans have re-vered and proselytised about the cat in all its forms.And why not? How many of us can resist seeing afluffy kitten chasing and unravelling a ball of wool, orplay tag with a piece of rope – or your leg?The ape families aside, cats are probably more likehumans than any other species, though thankfullywithout the essentially human emotions such as nas-tiness, revenge and hatred.But they can certainly be happy, sad, inscrutable,obstinate, jealous, and more. And very creative. Ifyou have not seen the online video of the cat refus-ing to go for a walk on a leash by playing dead, youhaven’t lived. (Who the devil would think of leashinga cat anyway? The indignity of it all ...)This column will of course be criticised to within aninch of its life for all this cat heresy, but will plough onanyway, because whatever one learns from cats,someone else will have a different view or perceivedexperience.Why? Because, just like humans, every cat is differ-ent.Anyone who takes a doggy approach to training acat should perhaps consider something simpler; un-derwater synchronised bonsai, perhaps.You don’t train cats – you bribe them. You want totake your cat for a walk in the garden? Easy – makesure they get their dinner immediately afterward.Walking in the garden with your (unleashed) cat is awonderful experience, if a little slow.You don’t hit cats, but you can use different voicelevels to indicate displeasure or happiness. And theylisten.Cats are great ignorers – but like Glenn Close in Fa-tal Attraction, they WILL NOT BE IGNORED. So agreat weapon in getting-to-know-train-and-love-your-cat is ignoring them right back.It’s amazing how much cats actually do want you tocommunicate with them, even if you are at pains tofigure their responses.Cats, curiosity, etc … geddit?If you look for a cat’s smile or frown, you’re looking inthe wrong place.Cats are far more subtle; the tell-tale tail movements,the eye dilations, the ear positioning, the walk, theattitude, the vibe … any experienced cat-watcher willalso advise you these multiple mannerisms and theability to interpret them. Think the complexities ofquantum physics – then double them.Yes, cats kill wildlife—of course they do. But theydon’t have to, if they are fed well and kept inside dur-ing the dark hours. Walking your cat can also help inresponding when they take an interest in surrounding

wildlife. True, not every one of them will be perfect –but then not every schoolkid gets an OP1.The primary causes of cats killing wildlife are: custo-dial indifference, not de-sexing your cat, leaving it outat night to fend for itself, neglect also forcing it to fendfor itself, leaving home due to abuse, dumping un-wanted cats in the bush, not reporting missing cats,scared off by fireworks.Note the common cause factor in all of these is humanbehaviour, not cats.If you treat a cat like some household utility like a dish-washer – there to be paid attention to and functiononly when necessary – most cats will treat you thesame way.But if you treat your cat as one of the family: well-fedwith good food, love and special attention (30 minutesa day), and kept safely inside at night you will have aloving and often mischievous, highly individual friendfor life who will constantly surprise.It’s an average 15-year commitment to take on a cat –often longer than a dog – plus, if you have been suc-cessfully owned by the cat, you will have many yearsof sorrow following its departure.But if it all seems too hard, there’s always that ultimatecat domain - youtube.
