Annual Bazaar

On Sunday Dec. 8th, the Society held its

annual Bazaar at the Japanese Palace

Restaurant. Many of our members

pitched in to make it a success – from

assembling the cooked obento with dishes

prepared by Chef Julia Dunaway and

other members including Asako Cosby,

Nobuko Foshee and Haruko Herness.

The Japanese Palace staff made the

sushi obento. Several members

contributed to making bake sale items and

providing merchandise for our gift sale.

Julia prepared the okonomiyaki batter and

she and Harvey Yamagata gilled the

okonomiyaki on the teppan grill with

Michael Moore putting the final garnish

touches on them.

Society News – Recent Events - continued

New Year’s Luncheon

About 120 members joined together on January

5th to welcome the New Year. The first thing we

all saw was the new walkway to our front doors,

compliments of John Powell. What a wonderful

change from the few stepping stones none of us

could really ever use. The food, as always, was

delicious. Then we were entertained by Fumiko

Coburn and Mayuko Takahashi playing the

traditional Japanese koto. Even their tuning

before the program provided a very Japanese

atmosphere. Members of the children’s

Japanese Language class then sang a few

songs for us, lead by Harumi Sharp and Kumiko

Porter. Finally, the stream of raffle prizes started.

One table we all labeled the “lucky” table since

they won so many prizes – but that could also

have something to do with how many tickets they

bought. The grand prizes of two 46” LED HD

RCA flat-screen televisions went to Alexandra Stokes and Joe and Haruko Herness

Everyone enjoyed all the delicious Japanese dishes.
