Identify Your Gem

We communicate and operate under one primary Gem, but often there is a secondary in the mix as well. As we examine each Gem and its personality traits, see if you can figure out which one best describes you.

For example, I am a Pearl and a Ruby. My parents are both Pearls, so I was raised in that environment. However, a Pearl in business will get walked on and taken advantage of if not careful. So, I had to quickly allow the Ruby in me to shine through as well. My wife and I are a perfect match because she is a Sapphire, so we offer each other balance. My business partner is an Emerald, which is exactly what I need. You’ll see why as we describe each Gem.

Once you identify your own personality type, or Gem, and get comfortable with your own language, you will also spot other gems more quickly. I’m able to do this in the first 10 seconds of meeting someone new, so I know exactly how to analyze and communicate more effectively with each Gem and speak in his/her

language. This is critical for closing sales, teaching new subjects, and setting goals. You will notice that both your personal and working relationships will become less stressful, more productive, and more fulfilling in every way.

I went back into my deep Chinese heritage and found even more interesting traits that play a role in describing each type of personality. Let’s look at these Gems more closely and see how these characteristics all fit together.

The Emerald is a gemstone of the Chinese goddess Quin Yin, representing universal love and inner beauty. This is a very powerful crystal, symbolic of wisdom, and abundance. The ancient Chinese believed that emeralds would provide wisdom and insight, as well as heal both physical and mental ailments. In true Chinese tradition, green is considered one of the three (green, red and yellow) lucky colors. Green, the vibrant color of the Emerald, also symbolizes wealth, hope, harmony, fertility, regeneration, and growth. In Chinese culture, green is also seen as the color of purity.

As far as the actual physical elements of the Emerald, on the scale or hardness, it is considered a nine as compared to that of a diamond which is defined as a

10. The Emerald gem can stand up to everyday wear as does the Emerald Gem Personality, standing up for themselves – strong in their ability to follow through, follow up, and perform tasks to the best of their abilities. Emeralds can teach us to be true to our word; when the Emerald proclaims their truth and is motivated by all the facts, there’s no stopping them from moving forward. They are motivated by the bottom-line.

The Emerald Personality Gem sees the world in black and white. They love and need facts and figures. If you are an Emerald, you might find yourself frequently misunderstood and people may think you’re cold or insensitive, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. Emeralds are very articulate in their speech and are always asking, “Why?” Ultimately, Emeralds are just interested in the bottom line and want to understand it as quickly as possible before they make any decisions; They hate long meetings. Emeralds love systems and organization. Their systems have systems and they can get hung up on perfectly organizing things so much they never actually move forward or get started on a project. Plus, Emeralds are usually the grammar police; they hate typos. They also aren’t happy when people are late. Managers want Emeralds to keep numbers in check. Emeralds talk in rhythm and monotone, and they

don’t like mindless conversation – it is waste of time and time is money. You’ll learn quickly never to waste an Emerald’s time.

As an Emerald, you need to focus on one thing at a time and try to push yourself forward so you can finish the learning stage quickly. An Emerald’s mantra needs to be: “Done is better than perfect.”

Emeralds are great organizers, and we can learn a lot from them regarding taking responsibility, timeliness, and conciseness. They are problem solvers and perfectionists. If you are working with an Emerald, make sure to give them clear steps and all the accurate facts they need to make an informed decision. They are loyal and always willing to help. They love instructions and take inventory of all the parts in an orderly fashion. Their closets will hold clothing that is more than five to 10 years old. They like simple accessories, and they purchase quality items at a good price. They research their cars before they buy them. In their minds, there is a place for everything. When they are home alone, they will complete the items on their task list one by one ensuring everything gets completed in a timely, orderly, and efficient fashion.

Moving onto the Pearl – the actual Pearl gemstone is literally smoother around the edges compared to the other Gems and very similar to the Pearl Personality Gem. Known for their calming effect, the Pearl is said to balance one’s karma, offer protection, and attract wealth and good luck. It symbolizes loyalty, purity, generosity, and integrity. In many ancient Asian cultures, the smooth wholeness, and magic appearance of the pearls in such insignificant life forms as oysters indicated the presence of divinity. Their natural bead-like shape made them easy to use for decoration and yielded lovely results. Its physical trait resembles a

round circle or could be related to that of the number zero in Chinese numerology, which means limitless. Helping others is the Pearl’s number one motivation. Money, competition, and the limelight are not important to the Pearl. They want to contribute to a cause bigger than themselves and are drawn to take action. Many pearls are generously involved with organizations that promote the welfare of others. Pearls hold very strong convictions; they value authenticity and trust. A Pearl will not tolerate fake friendships and will know when they are dealing with an “imitation pearl.” Although imitation pearls look like the part, they do not have the same smoothness as genuine pearls – they lack the luster and shine.

Pearls are very caring and loyal and want to make a difference. They have a purpose. Pearls love people, and they love helping people. Like the sapphire, they are a light in the world, but it’s a more soothing light, not a bright shining spotlight. They just aren’t as loud. They wear comfortable clothing, like earth tones, and not many accessories unless those items hold sentimental value. Their appearance is simple, simple hair, simple clothing; whatever is easy. Their cars are safe and good for the environment. They head for the organic section in the grocery store and eat healthy food. They want to

save the world. When home alone they listen to relaxing music. They enjoy a nice quiet restaurant, are not huge spenders, and they give money to friends and family. They value relationships and still enjoy spending time with some of their high school friends. They are loyal, sensitive, non-demanding, always willing to help, and actually follow through with that help. You can always count on a Pearl.

Thoughtful and patient, the Pearl dislikes conflict and controversy. Pearls love sharing and are very proud of their family and friends; they frequently come up in conversation. Sapphires (we’ll get to them in a minute) who thrive on the joys of meeting new people, Pearls value grounded and rooted relationships. They prefer small intimate settings versus a big social gathering. Pearls are loyal, trustworthy, and love to serve and give of themselves. Due to their nature, sometimes they are overlooked and taken advantage of. If you are a Pearl, you need to be selective about who you choose to help. By placing clear boundaries in your life, you can learn to say “no” without the fear of disappointing others. To avoid burnout, a Pearl must work at putting themselves first every once and awhile. A Pearl’s mantra should be, “It is more loving to say ‘no’ sometimes.”

If you are working with or attempting to close a deal with a Pearl, be as authentic as possible. Pearls can sniff out an imitation in a second and will quickly lose trust. Pearls care less about facts, figures, or money, so appeal to their good nature. Share how you can help them or how you’ve helped others in the past. Pearls need to feel valued for the work they do that normally goes unnoticed. When communicating with a Pearl, approach with a more soft-spoken voice, and tone it down. Don’t come on too strong as that will make them feel uncomfortable. They will also avoid confrontation because to them, it’s just not worth it.

The Ruby has forever been held in the highest esteem in Asian countries. Rubies were used to decorate armor and ornament harnesses of noblemen in China. The Rubies red brilliance is the most popular color in Chinese culture symbolizing good luck, joy, beauty, and happiness. In Chinese culture, red also represents celebration and vitality. It is believed that rubies can improve motivation, as well as promote clear visualization and aid in retaining wealth and passion. Chinese businesses are also known to use red in their marketing efforts. Dynamic as always, a Ruby brings out passion and enthusiasm embracing life to the fullest; a Ruby is a true leader.

When observing the actual Gem, it is rare to find a Ruby with fine quality over three carats in size. In Chinese Numerology, the number three is considered a very lucky number and sounds similar to the word for growth, symbolizing life, abundance and birth.

The Ruby Personality Gem is best described as competitive. Rubies don’t like to even play a game if think they can’t win. (If you are a Ruby, you probably take family game night way too seriously.) They love to win and are motivated by challenges. Rubies thrive on being the best at everything and are constantly striving for their next big goal. Rubies want to feel valued for their uniqueness and like to celebrate their accomplishments and thrive on public recognition. Lots of business owners are Rubies because Rubies are blessed with extra confidence in their abilities to be the best and are very likely to take risks; they are true leaders. Rubies can sometimes be too direct and cause hurt feelings. Not confrontational, they are just focused by whatever they are working towards. Rubies are exceptionally susceptible to the comparison trap and will turn their vibrant red brilliance to blue if they feel like someone is outperforming them. As a Ruby, your mantra needs to be, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Rubies can teach us how to be brave,

to take bigger risks; and to never give up. To avoid burnout, Rubies should narrow their focus to one thing instead of trying to be the best at everything. Rubies can also avoid hurting those they love by working on their communication skills and being more sensitive. If you are working with a Ruby, you can motivate them by listening to their ideas and acting as a sounding board. They need to talk things out. Rubies love big dreamers and believe they can achieve anything they set their sights on. The Ruby is motivated by greatness, growth, and inspiration.

When looking inside their closets, you will only find the best. The best clothing, the most popular brands. They dress to impress. They hairstyles are trendy. Their cars are the best. You will find a Ruby not overly organized or sloppy, they are just busy, busy making money. Shopping is grab and go. When they are home alone, they just keep working. They work so much, they skip meals, and when you have dinner with them, they inhale their meals. They are very determined and ambitious achievers and quick decision makers.

Rubies are often business owners and entrepreneurs because they like to lead. Rubies are proud of their accomplishments and want to tell you about them. They are probably applying for every job but would get better results by narrowing their focus and putting more effort into just a few of the best ones. They work with great speed and diligence because time is money. They have the mentality that says they can only count on themselves. Rubies need help with balance because they can be control freaks in a business. They must learn to sometimes let go and eventually be shown they really need to be part of a team. The easiest way to sell to a Ruby is by saying the words “limited edition.” They want it, so they’ll go after it and get it!

To win with a Ruby• Impress them by being an idea generator• Make yourself available so they can be more

productive• Do not get offended if they hurt your feelings. • A Ruby will say, let me show you how it’s done, so

let them show you! And show you they will with 100 percent effort.

• Let them go first because that’s what they want and how they will excel best.

Within the Chinese Heritage, blue is seen as one of the favorite colors symbolizing healing, trust, long life, and harmony. In parts of Asia, Saturday was the designated day to wear sapphires and dress in blue, because the color and stone indicated wisdom and generous thinking. In Chinese business, the color blue is heavily used in marketing.

Although the physical attributes of the actual Sapphire gem are similar to those of the actual Ruby gem in terms of the hardness of the stone, representing a nine (noted earlier), the only real difference between the

two is the color. However, when Rubies and Sapphires are compared to each other in the Personality Gems Theory, they are notably different – yet both are motivated by attention and recognition, but for slightly different reasons. While Rubies want to be the best, Sapphires just want to be in the limelight and will work for recognition more than money. Unlike a Ruby, a Sapphire can be found in a rainbow of colors and that’s true for the Personality Gem Sapphire as well. They light up a room with their good vibes and positive energy reflecting colorful rays of beauty.

In the Middle Ages, wearing a sapphire was believed to have suppressed negative thoughts and bring gifts of fulfillment and joy. This belief is not far off, because the Sapphire Personality Gem is primarily motivated by having a good time and being the life of the party. They light up a room with their good vibes and positive energy and want everything to be fun, or they won’t waste their time. Sapphires are positive people, love human interaction, and are social butterflies – seeing the best in everyone. They just want to enjoy life and all the experiences it has to offer. Our Sapphire friends teach us to not take life so seriously and to make time for fun. Sapphires just need to understand that not everyone feels as happy-go-lucky and positive as

they do all the time. Sapphires need to express more sensitivity when other gems share their struggles. A Sapphire’s mantra should be, “Eat that frog!” meaning make sure to do the important and maybe boring tasks first so you are free to enjoy the rest of your time. If you are working with a Sapphire, you should remember to shine the limelight their way! Give them a time to shine and value their positive energy contributions to your group. Try to be positive around them, because Sapphires don’t want to waste time on the negative.Their closets hold fun, bright, and colorful clothing. They go overboard on accessories, love tattoos, and shoes. They are extreme; they are all about standing out. Their cars are fun. They buy more than they intend to when shopping. When they are home alone, they want to listen to loud music and talk on the phone at the same time. They love concerts, activities, and they are usually late. When you ask them a question, they think with their mouths. In a Sapphire’s book, rules are meant to be broken. The Sapphire will still get the job done, do it well, and make a difference but only on their terms. They love helping people. They just need help with organization. Sapphires and Emeralds complement each other well, they just take a different approach. They love recognition and like teamwork.

Being able to identify yourself and others will allow you to communicate more effectively and speak to others in their language. You will notice that both your personal and working relationships will become less stressful, more productive, and more fulfilling in every way.
