Last Week’s Program

Rotary’s 2013-14

STRIVE Awards By Chris Burnaw

l

The Muskegon Rotary Club welcomed the students involved in the STRIVE program as honored guests last

meeting, as Co-Chairperson Judy Johnson and other mentors spoke about the program and the students' achievements. STRIVE, which stands for "Students Taking a Renewed Interest in Education", is a partnership between the Muskegon Rotary Club and Muskegon High School. STRIVE matches qualified, committed, and educated mentors (aka the "old people") with promising high school students. STRIVE incorporates achievement, empowerment, and life skills to produce a student who is prepared to succeed after high school. The focus of this partnership is to first develop a relationship between the mentor and the student, which will then lead to academic improvement. In listening to the stories of the relationships between the mentors and their students, it's easy to realize what a great impact STRIVE has had not only on the teens, but the "old people" as well. All spoke with pride of the hard work of the students and their plans for the future. STRIVE students took AP and honors classes, participated in band, drama and a variety of sports, held down jobs, belonged to ROTC, and more! >>>

“Holding Court,” something Tom Powers is so often wont to do following meetings, the former Muskegon Catholic Central superintendent is “telling it like it is” to, from left, high school junior Mercedes Herrera, Judy Johnson, mom Marisela Herrera, and Darlene Collet. Mercedes was named the Most Improved Junior, garnering her, among other things, a $500 STRIVE scholarship.

>>> Rotarians heard stories of events shared, new skills learned (texting and go carts!), new experiences had (the front row of the movie theater isn't so bad), and lasting relationships built. Students attended workshops on goal setting and financial management, learning basics that will help them succeed as they navigate the next phase of their lives. Darlene Collet shared that STRIVE not only gave her student a renewed interest in education, but her parents as well - Shankia 's father and stepmother both were inspired to go back and finish school, and her father is now attending college. The first time the students achieve a 3.0 GPA, they receive $75 incentive award and if the maintain the 3.0, they receive a $75 award. If they Improve the 3.0, they receive a $100 incentive award. STRIVE graduating seniors also received a card and a check for $20.14. Awards and checks for $500 were also given to two students in honor of their special achievements. Mercedes Herrera received the "Most Improved Junior" award, to recognize her improved GPA from end of sophomore year to the end of junior year, and Artmetria Williams received the "Most Improved Senior" award, to recognize her improved GPA from end of junior year to the end of senior year; both young ladies also attended the events and workshops. The tuition scholarship was awarded to Shankia Kidd, who will be attending Michigan State to study nursing; she plans to continue ROTC at MSU and join the Air Force as an officer. Meet our STRIVE students and their mentors (most pictured above):

- Brianna Kirks and Jasmine Monje, mentored by Merica Dobry. -Tie’sjwan Hughes, mentored by Jeff Lewis. - Mercedes Herrera, mentored by Cathy Brubaker-Clarke. - Sheryl Coleman, Ty’esha Kirks, Ma'Kaylia Jackson, mentored by Judy Johnson. - Artmeatria Williams, mentored by Christine Robere. - Shankia Kidd, mentored by Darlene Collet. - William Hunt and Malik King, mentored by Don Crandall. - Shylia Parker, mentored by Kathy Moore. - Darshawn Brown, mentored by Phil Friedrick. - Jazzmen Harris, mentored by Kate Kesteloot Scarbrough. - Arleigh'a Gordon, mentored by Julia Koch. - Kia Sykes, mentored by Nancy Crandall. - James Jefferson, mentored by John Noling. - Malik King, mentored by Scott Musseman

Judy summed up her presentation with a quote from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that represents the spirit of STRIVE - "One genuine act of the heart in a weary world." STRIVE needs Rotarians to help make a difference in the lives of students. If you are interested in becoming a mentor and building a relationship with a great student, please contact Judy.

Linda Juarez, above left, and Kim Suarez led Rotarians in a videotaping session for the Way to Wellville contest, to show their support of the efforts that Rotary's 1 in 21 Healthy Muskegon County initiative and others are doing to improve the health of our community. Muskegon is one of the top 16 semi-finalists in the contest; there will be five communities nationwide chosen to participate in the Way to Wellville. The contest, which spans five years, focuses on community efforts to improve overall health. Tom Powers and Chris Burnaw, right, both spoke about the quickly approaching Mercy Health Seaway Run, the healthy community event which also serves as a fundraiser for 1 in 21 and the YMCA. Tom is seeking volunteers for the Muskegon Rotary Club Spirit Station to hand out water and cheer for runners. Chris mentioned that the deadline for early registration is June 20; sign up by then to get the best rate. Online registration goes through June 26, with late registration at Fricano’s Place on Thursday evening and Friday at the Expo. Volunteers are also still needed for the event. Because the event supports Rotary's 1 in 21 efforts, we would like to

have a strong showing of Rotarians! Visit www.seawayrun.com to register for the run, walk, or volunteering; contact Tom to be a part of the Spirit Station Crew.

MUSKEGON ROTARY SENDS 14+2+4 TO LIFE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Ed. Note: With everything else going on last week, there still was one extremely important Rotary goin’s-on in Tustin, MI. We’ll be hearing more about it later. In the meantime, Youth Leader and roving RIM correspondent John Noling offers us a peek at Life Leadership Conference 2014.

A record 14 Life Leadership

conferees (high school

sophomores and juniors) from 6

Muskegon area high schools are

attending the 66th annual Life

Leadership Conference at Camp

Kettunen in Tustin, Michigan this

week from Wednesday thorough

Saturday, June 18-21. The original

Life Leadership Conference was

begun by the Muskegon Rotary in

1949 at Camp Emery on Big Blue

Lake, thanks to the efforts of then

Muskegon Rotarians Stub Bemer

and Chase Hammond.

An additional six Muskegon

area conferees above normal this

year were recruited to assist local

high schools with leadership

development and to support their

Interact Clubs.

Muskegon Rotary sponsored an

extra candidate, two more were

paid for from generous support

from Houghton Lake and Lowell

Rotary Clubs, and the fourth

conferee was co-sponsored by

North Muskegon and Mona Shores

Interact clubs along with individual

Rotarian donations. Two more

were recruited at the last moment

early this week to replace last

minute cancellations from other

clubs in the District to make sure

no seats were left open. They will

all report back to our club and

other clubs in the fall and will be

mentored throughout the upcoming

school year by Life Leadership

Committee members.

Names and schools of the 2014

conferees will be included in a

future report.

Former LLC conferees Landon

Fortenberry and Haley Knight are

returning to LLC to contribute their

talents for the first time this year.

Landon will serve as a junior

counselor at LLC, a new

position, and was sponsored by

member donations from our

club. Haley, who went on to

organize a Rotaract Club last year

at Northern Michigan University,

will be joining Rotarians Pam

Babbitt, Tom Powers, Rich

Berry, and Rob Murphy on Friday

of this week to volunteer their time

as Rotary Resource Mentors in

assisting with

discussion

groups and

providing other

support

throughout the

day at the

conference.

Muskegon

Rotary LLC Co-

Chairs Brianna

Scott and John

Noling would like

to thank our club

for the extra

support this year,

our wonderful

LLC Committee

team, and all Rotarians and other

Rotary Clubs who have come

forward to serve this year as we

invest in these New Generations of

future Rotarians. – John Noling

And finally...

Many thanks to the Watermark Conference Center, above, and Hearthstone Cathering for the fine accomodations and menu last week. This week, we start wrapping up Rotary Year 2013-14, getting ready for the “changing of the guard” on July 3. It really would be nice to have a huge crowd for President Don’s last full meeting as well as for another great program from our highly-connected Program Committee Chair Dave Alexander. Muskegon Rotary is a great Club... but... it could be even greater with everyone’s strong participation. If you’re not on a committee, and you know of one you’d like to be on, contact that committee chair and sign up today. Watdoyasay!!!
