2017 RED MASS:The Very Reverend Monsignor Mark Richard Lane, Diocesan Administrator, and The Saint Thomas More Society invite everyone in the Richmond Diocese to join in worship and fellowship at the 34th Annual Red Mass and Dinner on Thursday, October 26. TODAY’S HOMILY:http://www.associationofcatholicpriests.ie/2017/08/27-august-21st-sunday-in-ordinary-time/In today’s gospel, Our Lord asks the question: “Who do you say that I am?’ although Peter’s credo is a solid basis from which to begin. Notice the phrase “Son of the Living God,” expressing more richly what “Christ” means. Peter’s worshipful faith comes to him as a gift from above, not from his own ability.Why was the blessing given to him in particular? Perhaps because his humble, contrite spirit made him best prepared to receive it? Or because God chooses whom He wills, irrespective of their merits? It is to this Peter that Jesus entrusts whatever is meant by the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Upon his solid, dedicated faith the Church will always rely, for unity and encouragement. Keys are mainly for opening; many doors lock by themselves. We could reflect further on Peter’s task, as seen in other Gospel passages (Mat. 14:28ff; 17:24ff; Lk. 2: 14ff; 3:1 2ff).
fundamentally the same story, but with significant adjustments. Jesus goes to Tyre and Sidon, this time with his disciples. He does not go indoors and is not afraid to be recognized. We are told immediately that the woman is a Canaanite. Matthew supplies the woman’s words, which are rich in meaning (“Lord”, “son of David”). Jesus ignores her.
The disciples intervene, but only to confirm Jesus’ apparent rebuff. V. 24 is special to Matthew. Eventually, the woman changes her tone and posture, begging for help (“Lord”). Jesus’ reply is shorter, perhaps in the light of v.24. The woman agrees with what Jesus has said and only then goes on, in the same parabolic vein, to make her request. Her faith is explicitly acknowledged and the cure is proclaimed. The confirmation is reported is as few words as possible. Both accounts are strange. Jesus seems to make this journey for no purpose, has a chance encounter and returns. In Mark, there is indoor / outdoor symbolism, suggesting insiders / outsiders. Matthew makes the purpose and problem very clear in v.24. In both accounts, a foreign woman causes Jesus to open his preaching to non-Israelites. The story is never resumed. The comments below will bring out further details.
OLD TESTAMENT BACKGROUND: In the Old Testament, Elijah cures children and outsiders. The Moses background to Jesus’ ministry has just been underlined in the feeding of the 5,000 (aimed at Jews). The next story following is the feeding of the 4,000 (aimed at Gentiles). The Elijah precedent
gives biblical authority to opening the preaching of the Kingdom to Gentiles.
NEW TESTAMENT FOREGROUND:This story closely resembles the cure of the centurion’s son in 8:5-13. Matthew’s adjustments to that story portray Jesus discovering faith outside Judaism and responding positively, as here. The purpose of both stories is the same, that is, to permit the post-Resurrection inclusion of the Gentiles.

LIVING OUR MISSION FUNDS : St. Jude received $6,096 and the Shrine received $3,813 from last year’s collections of Living Our Mission.St. Jude is holding this for repairs to the stained glass windows, and the Shrine will need to reconsider as it was originally earmarked as a payment toward a social hall.
DIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL 2017:St. Jude has received $4,616 as our first parish share funds collected. The Shrine has received $515 as their parish share of funds collected.Please keep in mind, when we pay our pledge payments, the church receives a portion. Keep up the good work.
HAITI CORNER: FOR ALL WHO CONTRIBUTE TO HAITI AND THOSE WHO DON’TAfter mass on February 26, in preparation for Lent, there will be a free soup and bread luncheon to discuss progress in Haiti. Paul Fletcher, Chairman of the Haiti Committee at St. Mary’s, will be here to give an update and answer questions anyone may have. Supporting Haiti could be a Lenten project for the family.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, KOVAR PROGRAM : St. Jude parishioners and all Brother Knights young and not so young: As announced in Church, again this year the Knights of Columbus will accept donations to the KOVAR program on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Wal Mart Supercenter in Franklin. The donations allow KOVAR to provide grants and interest-free home loans to organizations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia that serve people with intellectual disabilities. Grants are used to provide services such as job training, employment, medical and dental care, transportation and after school activities. Interest-FREE home loans provide enhanced opportunities for quality housing. This benefit is particularly important because of newly instituted changes in State housing requirements. GUIDELINES FOR LENT AND EASTER 2009 Regulations for Fast and Abstinence:Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a
fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does no oblige. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, other suitable forms of self-denial are encouraged.Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.
ASH WEDNESDAY MASS AND ASHES: Although not a holy day of obligation, Ash Wednesaday is the traditional day to begin our annual period of atonement. Fr. Charles will celebrate mass at the Shrine at 10 a.m., and Msgr. Frederic Elkin of the USN will celebrate at St. Jude at 7 p.m.
