Poor health forced him to retire from the ministry in 1851 and he moved to Schenectady, New York for his children’s education. In 1854, five years after his first wife died, he married Mary Ann Chapman Hale. Norman was involved in several lumber businesses and in 1860, he moved to Painted Post, New York; the location of the family’s mill, Fox, Weston and Bronson. Norman died in 1863. Norman Fox was born in 1792 in Chester, New York. His parents were Jehiel and Jerusha Fox. Norman attended Granville Academy in Washington County, New York and in 1813, he enrolled in Union College but he left before completing his degree. During the War of 1812, Norman served in the New York State Militia and then represented Washington County in the New York State Legislature. In 1831, Norman was ordained as a Baptist minister and served as minister at a variety of churches in upstate New York including the First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa from 1838 to 1850. In the same year, Norman married Jane DeHart Freeman. They had seven children, Adaline Sophia (1832-1850), Alanson Jehiel (1833-1903), Norman Jr. (1836-1907), William Freeman (1840-1909), Charles James (1842-1903), Mary Elizabeth (1844-1928) and George Henry (1846-1915). 1857. He was then pastor of the Baptist Church in Whitehall, New York from 1858 to 1862. When the Civil War began, he then enlisted in the 77th New York Volunteers and served as the regiment’s chaplain from 1862 to 1864. Following the war, Norman was an editor of the publication, The Central Baptist and as a professor at William Jewell College in Missouri. From 1900-1902, he served as mayor of Morristown, New Jersey. In 1869, he married Julia McKnight and they had one child Arthur Benjamin Fox (1869-1891). Julia died in 1870. Four years later in 1874, Norman married Jane Bleecker and the couple had three children, Alice (1876-1959), Noel (1878-1972) and Jane (1880). Norman died in 1907.

William Freeman was born in 1840. Before enrolling in Union College, he attended the Schenectady Lyceum and Union School. He enrolled in the Engineering Department of Union but did not graduate. He then joined the family’s lumber business and moved to Painted Post, New York following his graduation. Two years later, he was recruited by the United States Army and he served in the 107th New York Volunteers, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.. In 1865, he married Mary Ann Shattuck and they had two children, Charles (1868-1939) and Emma (1870-1895). From 1865-1875, he was employed by a lumber company in Oil City, Pennsylvania. He then briefly studied forestry methods in Germany and from 1875 to 1882 was a private forester for the Blossburg Coal Company. He became a forest warden with New York State and later became Superintendant of Forests after the creation of Adirondack Park. In his later years, William was active in preserving the memory of the Civil War by authoring several articles about the war and books including New York at Gettysburg, a three volume series that examined the contributions of New York regiments during the battle. William died in 1909. Charles James was born in 1842 and after attending the Schenectady Lyceum, he enrolled in Union College. He received his bachelor of arts in 1861. In 1862, he enlisted in the 107th New York Volunteers and attained the rank of major. Following the war, he joined the family’s lumber business in Painted Post in 1865. In 1888, he moved to Detroit and worked with his brother, Alanson at the Chicago Lumbering Company. Charles married Louisa Octavia Wright in 1865 and they had five children, Norman (1866-1939), Caroline (1869-?), Herbert (1873-1955), Walter (1878-1912) and George Henry (1882-1931). Charles died in 1903.

George Henry Fox, a leading American dermatologist and youngest son of Norman Fox, was born in 1846. He was educated at the Schenectady Union School and enrolled in the University of Rochester. His education was interrupted by the Civil War. He served two terms in the 77th New York Volunteers. After his service, he was able to re-enter the University of Rochester and graduate with his original class in 1867. Two years later in 1869, he completed his medical doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. He then studied dermatology in London, Paris, Berlin and Vienna. In 1873, he began a medical practice in New York City. Throughout his career, he held a variety of professor of dermatology positions at institutions including Woman’s Medical College, Starling Medical College, New York Post Graduate School and College of Physicians and Surgeons. He made many contributions to the field of dermatology and authored many articles and several books. In 1872, he married Harriet Louisa Gibbs and they had four children, George Howard (1873-1954), Adaline (1875-1957), Alanson (1879-1950) and Helen (1882-1975). In 1923, George Henry retired from medicine and spent the remainder of his life working on the family’s genealogy. He died in 1937. George Howard Fox was born in 1873 in London while his father, George Henry was completing his post-graduate work. Like his father, he was one of the leading dermatologists in the United States of his time. He received his bachelor of arts from Yale in 1894 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1898. Between 1902 and 1904, he studied with

leading dermatologists in the field in Berlin and Vienna. Afterwards¸ he entered his father’s service at Vanderbilt Clinic and New York Skin and Cancer Hospital. Howard held several dermatology professor positions at institutions including Dartmouth Medical School, New York Polyclinic Medical School and Hospital and New York University College of Medicine at Bellevue Hospital. He participated in several professional organizations including American Medical Association, New York County Medical Society and the American Board of Dermatology and Syphilology. During World War I, Howard served in the U.S. military as a doctor and he worked in military hospitals both in the United States and France. He was honorably discharged on August 7, 1919. During World War II, h served as a consultant on tropical medicine to the Secretary of War. Howard died in 1954. The Society of the Descendants of Norman Fox was founded in May 1904 by members of the Fox family in order to perpetuate the memory of Norman Fox. The organization sought to acquire, collect and preserve records, papers and memorials related to Norman Fox and his descendants. It also promoted acquaintance and fellowship among descendants as well as established and maintained a fund for assistance in education or relief in suffering for any of the descendants. The organization wrote a constitution and was governed by a board of trustees. It held an annual meeting and social event. A newsletter, Fox Family News was sent to members on a regular basis. There were three levels of membership: active member, who were lineal descendants over 21; junior members, who were lineal descendants under 21 and associate members, who were husbands or wives of direct descendants.

Scope and Content Note: Material in the Fox Family Papers dates from 1800 to 2007 but the bulk of it dates to the mid to late nineteenth century. Part of the collection sustained water damage and photocopies have been made for preservation purposes. The collection is divided into three series: Fox Family, The Society of the Descendants of Norman Fox, and Photographs.

The Fox Family series contains the papers of individual members of the Fox family. This includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, legal documents, financial records, publications, books, scrapbooks, diplomas, certificates and military papers from the Civil War and World War I. The bulk of the series dates to the mid to late nineteenth century. Majority of the papers in this series were produced by Norman Fox, his sons, Norman Jr., William Freeman, Charles James and George Henry and his grandson, Howard. This series has been arranged into the following sub-series: Jehiel Fox (1762-1823); Norman Fox (1792-1863) and Family; Alanson Jehiel (1833-1903) and Family; Norman Fox Jr. (1836-1907) and Family; William Freeman Fox (1840-1909) and Family; Charles James Fox (1842-1903) and Family; George Henry Fox (1846-1937) and Family; Howard Fox (1873-1954); Civil War Papers; Painted Post Papers and Miscellaneous Family Papers.

The Jehiel Fox (1762-1823) sub-series includes letters, land deeds and indentures, newspaper clippings, a copy of his will and a copy of a list of family births. It also contains copies of two poems that were written in honor of Jehiel Fox.

The Norman Fox (1792-1863) and Family sub-series contains material related to Norman’s military, politic and cleric careers as well as letters, obituaries, and newspaper clippings. Many of the letters were written to his sons. They mostly discuss the family’s lumber business in Painted Post but they also discuss personal matters. Norman attended Union College briefly and there is a list of the students and officers attending the school from 1813. In addition, there is material related to one of his wives, daughters, son-in-law and grandchildren. This includes tombstone transcriptions of the Freeman family,

school compositions written by Adaline Sophia, church papers, the eulogy of Norman’s son-in-law, Robert Stuart MacArthur and the papers of his grandson, Kenneth Caldwell MacArthur.

The Alanson Jehiel Fox (1833-1903) and Family sub-series contains speeches, railroad passes, Alanson Jehiel’s obituary, and newspaper clippings. The speeches date to the late nineteenth century and they were written by Alanson for various speaking engagements. There is a visiting pass issued to him by the United States Military in 1862 that allowed him to travel through American military zones. He was issued this pass so he could visit his brothers, William and Charles in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The sub-series also has drafts of John Kossik’s book, 63 Alfred Street: No Where Else to Go, which outlined the history of Alanson’s home in Detroit from 1888 to 1903. The sub-series contains material related to his family including letters written by his daughter, Julia, a letter written to Alanson from his wife, Cornelia and the obituary of his grandson, Murray Fox Freeman.

The Norman Fox Jr. (1836-1907) and Family sub-series contain letters, newspaper clippings, and church papers. Many of the letters were written by Norman while he served as chaplain of the 77th New York Volunteers during the Civil War. The letters discuss battles, his chaplain duties, military life, and travel as well as family news. There are two letterbooks with copies of letters Norman sent to his brother from 1857 to 1883 with many of these letters dating to the Civil War era. In addition, there is material related to his chaplain duties including reports, letters, lists of personnel and list of casualties. Material related to his family includes information and pictures of Julia McKnight’s grave in St. Louis and papers of his grandson, Noel Bleecker Fox.

William Freeman Fox (1840-1909) and Family sub-series contains school essays and compositions, a Christmas play by William, L’Enfant Perdu, newspaper clippings and letters. The letters were written by William between 1852 and 1904 with some dating to the Civil War. The letters cover a wide range of topics including business and personal matters. The sub-series has a Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Union College dating to 1857-58. William researched his family and wrote the genealogy, Thomas Fox of Concord, which is in the collection as well as some of his notes. Material related to his forestry career includes some of his publications and an article about him that appeared in a 1988 issue of the magazine, The Conservationist. The book, There’s a Fox in Pinchot’s Forest by Aileen Sallom Freeman examines his forestry career as well. The sub-series also contains some of his family’s papers including his son, Charles Shattuck Fox’s doctoral dissertation, a letter from George Henry Fox to his son, Charles and the obituary of his grandson, Norman Fox.

Charles James Fox (1842-1903) and Family sub-series mostly contains letters written by Charles from 1848 to 1868 with some dating to the Civil War. Many of these letters were written to family members including his brothers. Other Civil War material in the sub-series includes his military commission certificate, a narrative detailing his entrance into the army, muster rolls from the 107th Regiment of the New York Volunteers, Company C and ordnance and ordnance stores inventories. Charles participated in many events commemorating the Civil War and many of the newspaper clippings in the sub-series highlight those events. Material related to his family include wedding invitation, announcement, and guestbook, letters, will, cemetery paperwork and two children’s books.

George Henry Fox (1846-1937) and Family sub-series contains two short biographies outlining George Henry’s life and medical career, essays and compositions, newspaper clippings, articles from medical journals, and letters. The letters were written by George Henry between 1856 and 1936 with some of letters dating his service in during the Civil War. The sub-series holds his discharge certificate. There are many certificates from various medical organizations from across the world that gave George Henry honorary membership as well as some of his degrees. While studying dermatology in Europe, George

Henry wrote a series of newspaper articles for the Elmira Advertiser describing his experiences, which can be found in the sub-series. Like his brothers, he was actively participated in events commemorating the Civil War and many of the newspaper clippings in the sub-series highlight these events. There is also material related to his family that includes newspaper clippings and a short biography of his wife, Harriet Gibbs and wedding invitation and announcement for his son, Alanson Gibbs.

The Howard Fox (1873-1954) sub-series mostly contains material related to his service in the United States Military during World War I. He served as a doctor in military hospitals in the United States and France and the sub-series contains orders, reports, memorandums, special orders and hospital orders dating from 1913 to 1919. Furthermore, there is material documenting his medical career including diplomas, certificates from various organizations, and honorary degrees. There are transcriptions of letters he received while President of the American Board of Dermatology and Syphilology as well as a short biography.

Civil War Papers sub-series contains material from the Fox brothers military service in the Civil War. This mostly includes letters written by the brothers with some of the letters being duplicates found in the individual brother’s sub-series. There is also miscellaneous paperwork including a Confederate States Quartermaster form, a Through Transportation for the Confederate States form and a Statement of Clothing Allowance form from the Union Army. In addition, the sub-series has newspaper clippings related to the brothers’ service and participation in anniversaries and commemorative events following the war. There are two copies of Robert Morrow’s book, 77th New York Volunteers: “Sojering” in the Vi Corps as well as publisher promotional material. The book discusses the history and participation of the 77th New York Volunteers regiment.

The Painted Post sub-series contains material that relates to the Fox Family’s lumber business, Fox, Weston and Bronson located in Painted Post, New York. This includes newspapers clippings, Charles M. Fox’s scrapbook titled Bazoo, Gang Mills Bazoo newsletter, reunion programs and material related to the dedication of the Indian Memorial in Painted Post. Most of this material dates to the late nineteenth century.

Miscellaneous Family Papers sub-series contains material related to family members who are not direct descendants of Norman Fox. This includes Norman Fox’s brothers, Solyman and Alanson and their families. The sub-series contains legal documents, including deeds and mortgages, military commissions, cemetery information, newspaper clippings, letters, newsletters, books and other ephemera. There is also a list of family members who served in the military during the Second World War.

The Society of the Descendants of Norman Fox Papers series contains the papers dating from 1901 to 2007 of the organization, The Society of the Descendants of Norman Fox. This includes Board of Trustee and Treasurer Reports, meeting minutes, newsletters, legal documents, correspondence, programs/invitations to events and membership material. The organization met once a year for an annual meeting and the series contains the minutes taken at these meeting. The annual treasurer reports that were presented at these meetings are also in the series. There are also invitations and programs to these annual meetings as well as the banquets held after the meetings. There are various legal documents such as wills and probate papers, paperwork regarding the organization's tax exemption status and constitution amendments. A short history of the Society of the Descendants of Norman Fox can be found in this series as well as genealogical material. Genealogy was not the primary purpose of the organization but members did research the family’s history. In 1982, a Fox Family Genealogy was compiled by members and a copy can be found in Box 4. There are pamphlets that

outline the genealogy of Norman Fox and his son’s wives’ families and there are also some pedigree charts.

Photographs Series: This series is not yet arranged. Box 5 of the collection contains books dating to the nineteenth century that belonged to Norman. There is also a copy of a book exploring religious topics from 1898 that was written by Norman Jr. The box also contains a George Henry’s scrapbook. It contains newspaper clippings and many of the clippings can be found in the George Henry (1846-1937) and Family sub-series. Photocopies of the scrapbook can be found in Box 2. The flat storage box contains oversize material such as photographs, diplomas and certificates. This box holds certificates given to George Henry and Howard Fox during the course of their careers. The box also contains Noel Bleecker Fox’s political campaign posters, muster rolls from the Civil War, a ballot from New York State’s 1820 election, photographs of the attendees of a Fox Family Reunion and a photograph of the officers of the 107th New York Volunteers Regiment. Memorabilia in the collection includes a sword dating to the Civil War, two cartridge pouches taken from Confederates soldiers after the battles of Gettysburg and Williamsburg and a plaster relief of the profile of Norman Fox.
