As I sat to write this note an emailappeared at the bottom right hand of thescreen, teasing me to open it.

“I sustained an injury on the golf coursetoday, at which time I tore a calf musclemerely walking too quickly uphill! I amnow on crutches and out of action for awhile.”

Now I know what you’re thinking andthe thought crossed my mind too. Itcontinued...

“My reason for writing to you is to passon my thanks for the excellent supportand help that I received from your team!

Greenkeeper, Darren picked me up tookme to my car and loaded my equipmentin and returned me to Membership.

Treatments Manager, Ceri, packed theinjury with ice, contacted my wife andadvised Gary in the Shop of mypredicament, who subsequently helpedme and my wife back to my car, at whichtime we were able to get to the hospital.

These people are a credit toyour Company.”

Once again, Foxhills members havewritten my letter for me. Mike Bacon’semail sums up the wonderful spirit at ourclub; not just the care and teamwork ofmy colleagues but Mike’s generosity inacknowledging their efforts.

Perhaps this is a reason more of yourenewed your membership this April thanat any time in the last seven years.

I have just spoken on the phone to Mike,I am glad to report he is well and set tomake a full recovery.

Enjoy.

Valentine’s Day has long been aspecial day for lovers all overthe world to express theirfeelings for one another. ThisValentine’s Day at 11.30 Philand I did just that by marryingeach other. It was a beautifulday full of love and sunshine, good friends, family andhappiness; just as it should be.When leaving for ourcelebration venue to the tune of“Today this could be thegreatest day of our lives” Iknew that everything thatfollowed would be perfect tooas we had chosen a place thatwas not only close to ourhearts but has never let usdown for any occasion orevent, no matter how big orsmall. Of course it had to beFoxhills. Always big on fun, friendliness, glamour and style, exactly what we wanted.

My “hen day” was aluxurious spa day with mydaughter Katie and my sisterCarole whilst Phil and his BestMan Derek raced around thetrack at Mercedes World wewere pampered and preened toperfection! Well as close as I

could get. The hens and stagsmet up later in the day for awonderful and very traditionalEnglish tea at 3 0’ clocknaturally in 19.

The wedding celebrationsstarted of course with achampagne reception andphotos by Marion MasonPhotography who made us allfeel like movie stars. Into thelibrary and a very glamorousred theme went from heartshaped balloons by CelebrationMania, to the favours of LoveHeart sweets dressed in bagswith lovebirds which I hadmade. The food waswonderful, beautifullypresented and commented onby all of our guests. Wholesucculent salmon, tender beef, mountains of prawns and anarray of delicious salads, followed by a gorgeous dessertwhere even the plate wasdressed with a berry red heart-shaped coulis. The wine wasexcellent and the coffee andpetit fours complemented thebeautiful meal. Of course youneed amazing family andfriends too which is what we

are lucky enough to have, sothank you to them too formaking it a perfect day.

Thanks to everyone atFoxhills for making it such awonderful event full of happymemories and for contributingto the enjoyment that we had.I don’t think we would havetrusted anyone else with suchan important day.

Tracy and Phil

In June 2007 Foxhills memberJo Mucklow gathered a groupof ladies together to produce afun calendar to raise funds forthe Breast Unit at AshfordHospital. The calendar wasshot in the grounds of Foxhillsand the ladies were ablyassisted by Dean and Stuart

from the gym, who both lookedincredibly dapper in their blackDJs! All of the ladies had beenaffected by breast cancer inrecent times but were happy todress up for the event and havefun in the photos that weretaken by professionalphotographer Pete Millsom.

The calendar quickly soldout and over £7,000 was raisedfrom sales. Recently Jo andJanet Clarke, another Foxhillsmember, presented Consultant

Breast Surgeon Sunita Shrotriawith a state of the artthermostatically controlledscalp cooling machine whichwill be used by ladies withbreast cancer who areundergoing chemotherapy atAshford Hospital. A donationof £4,000 was also added in tothe funds by the masons.

Jo and Janet would like tothank Marc Hayton and JeanMarc for allowing them to usethe grounds and facilities ofFoxhills on the day of thephoto shoot and their supportin publicising the calendar. They would also like to thankthose members who boughtthe calendar.

It seems like yesterday whenwe were all looking forward toEaster weekend and theMasters and yet we now findourselves entering summer.

I am very grateful for thecompliments paid to David(Foxhills CourseSuperintendant) and his teamfollowing what was a trickywinter.

It started with the 1st and 6thgreens on Bernard Hunt beingdrained and was immediatelyfollowed by the front 9bunkers on Bernard Huntbeing rebuilt and re-modelled.This was then followed by afairly mild winter and thecourse being under snow for 2weeks in February. Much workwas completed during this timeand the compliments wereceived about the puttingservices were numerous.

Talking of the Masters remindsme of a common ailment foundat most golf courses in the UKat this time of year – its calledAugusta Syndrome.

It can strike anywhere acrossthe UK in April and alwaysoccurs during, and especiallyafter, the Masters. It can be a

very serious attack when theweather is sunny andseasonally warm.

The main cause of this ailmentis golfers tuning in to watch theworld’s best players on thebeautiful Augusta National andthen wonder why their club’sgreens aren’t every bit as good, especially as the weather is sogood at the moment.Unfortunately the weatherneeds to be mild and warm fora good couple of weeks beforethe ground temperature picksup enough to allow the grass togrow in this country. Yet beinggolfers we tend to get a bitimpatient and expect summerplaying conditions when thesun comes out.

Fortunately we seem to be asafe haven from AugustaSyndrome, but spare a thoughtfor all those course managersout there who aren’t as luckyas our David.

On a completely different note,I am pleased with the way theshop reopened in early April. After eventually making thedecision to keep the Foxshopbuilding as a shop, and not useit for the Spa instead, I thinkwe achieved all our ambitions.

We were determined not tohave a conventional clutteredoverstocked golf shop trying tobe everything to everyone.Instead we believe that we haveaccommodated the needs ofmost of our patrons with aleaning obviously towards theGolf and Spa operation.

Members automatically receive10% discount on all crestedmerchandise and look out forsome of the exciting offers onclubs, balls and clothing thatare currently running. All youneed to do is show yourcurrent membership card. Onthat note, membership haveasked me to mention that allmembers checking in for a teetime, please have yourmembership cards with you tosave time at check in. Also ifyou are just popping up to therange can I ask that you carryyour cards.

There will soon be a new retailarea in the Youth Club areawhich will cater for the needsof tennis and fitness members.

I know the members haveenjoyed seeing the old teamhelping out in the shopalthough now summer is uponus, Richard our HeadProfessional and Nathan, ourSenior Teaching Professional, will be seen more on the rangethan in the shop.

Please don’t forget that Golfand Country Club members areentitled to participate in ourcomplimentary member’s golfclinics. These are run bothmidweek as well as weekendsso please check the shop foravailability.

The Golf Office has returned tothe heart of the golf operationand is now situated in the backof the shop. Should you everneed to find me then thatshould be where you will findme or my team.

New additions to our teaminclude Stuart Paine who ismainly working in the golf

office but will also be seenhelping out in the shop. Stuarthas a degree in golf businessstudies and previously workedfor one of the country’s topgolf events companies.

Another is Adrian Heath whois assisting us in golf serviceswhilst Richard Shaw isworking in the shopthroughout the summer.Richard is currently taking adegree at BirminghamUniversity in Golf Clubmanagement.

We have taken on more coursemarshals this year that will bechecking out the pace of playas well as the credentials ofanyone using the courses. Weare also tightening up on thestandard of dress whichsometimes dips at this time ofyear.

Just to remind members thatwe made a change to the teebooking system following onfrom feedback after the AGM.

The bookable course is stillbookable up to 4 weeks inadvance but the big change ison the daily member’s roll-up.

You can now phone the shopup on the day you wish to playand book any time after10.00am. Should you want atee time before 10.00am thenyou will still need to turn up inperson, on the day, to book it.We believe that this will helpmembers living a distance awayto ensure that they don’t needto get to the club at the crackof dawn to get a mid-morningtee time.

I look forward to seeing you upat the club very soon.

Yours in Golf,

Golf Golf

We all say it but how timeflies, when you are having fun.A former captain ColinWoodbridge warned me duringMarch that I was halfwaythrough my year, I really couldnot believe it. I have certainlyhad a great deal of fun, withtremendous support from allthe membership but there isstill a great deal I wish toachieve.

Our use of technology hastaken a step forward mainlythanks to the team setting upcompetitions and theCommittee funding newcomputer equipment we arenow able to clock in prior toand enter our scores after wefinish a round. This has madethe publication of results lesstime consuming and we can bemuch more involved as theleader board and our positionon it chances so rapidly. TheCommittee aim is to enableeveryone who wants to entercompetitions on line and Iknow from the conversation Ihave had with many of youthat this should be our goal butthat is for the future.

I am especially pleased to seeour Men’s teams doing so well– our Surrey Fives teams arethrough to the second roundand both Kelso - Hamiltonpairs are in great shape. Theover 55s have done well in the

John Ling Trophy beating avery strong Hankley Commonteam. I look forward to similarsuccess in the scratch andWaffrons leagues. Our Ladiesare playing in the knock outphases of the Hicks, CentenaryBowl and Pearson.

Our Quiz Night on 24thMarch was a brilliant eveningwith representation from allsections of our club. Our QuizMaster par excellence – RogerHyder, kept us all in order. Itwas great to see my yogacompanions there, the AquaLadies, four teams fromFoxhills Bridge, the Wayfarersand the Membership squad outin force, as well as all yougolfers. We had so much funwe planned another.

Our serious events have beenwell supported, with somefantastic scores for the SpringClassic and more recently theBrian Peyton Trophy. The firstround of the Club Champion-ship is currently over sub-scribed. As Captain it is such aprivilege to welcome otherclubs to our Ladies and Mixedmatches, to know that thecourse will look great and thateveryone will be impressed bythe post match refreshments inthe Manor. It is very special tosee many new faces represent-ing our club.

I would like to thank everyonewho has landed in the bunkerson the sixth on Longcross, theninth, fifteenth and now theeleventh on Bernard Hunt andpaid a £1 fine, together with allof you who were persuaded byJJ to part with your money forthe Donny McLean quiz or theraffle to push Marc into theplunge pool (Incidentally andhopefully a coincidence thewinner of that competitionSteph Brown has now left thecountry)so far this has raisedover £400 for the Sparks. OurMaster Pairs event on EasterSunday, made us allconcentrate with some greatscore being recorded – only onebetter than our winner HarveyNorris, who carded a net 67only better by one Augustaplayer John Merrick with a 66.Harvey is sporting a new pairof shoes as his prize, sadly theyare not green.

Although raising money forour charity Sparks has not beenmy main objective during theyear Sunday 14th June was theexception. Traditionally this isour big fund raising event andas times is hard and everycharity is suffering from a lackof support I appreciatedeveryones contributions.Sparks funds medical researchfor Children, with the aim that

every child is born healthy andstays healthy. Those of youparents and grandparents forwhom this is the case knowhow precious that is. I do hopeyou all enjoyed the day, in thesunshine.

I hope those of you non golfersand all you golfers will be ableto attend the Captain’s Charitydinner on Friday 17th July, when our special guests willexplain what it takes tocompete in the Olympic Gamesand how it feels to win a goldmedal. The Coxed Pair from1992 will be joined by anathlete from the Beijing gamesto explain the then and now ofinternational sport.

Most importantly I have hadthe opportunity to play withdifferent players on all of ourevents – hopefully my usualplaying companions will allowme to play with them againnext year. It is very helpful tomeet so many of you on thecourse as it is an idealopportunity for you to expressyour views on what is goingwell and where we as acommittee might improve. I amat Foxhills a great deal – in factit has been suggested on morethan one occasion that perhapsI live here so please do let mehave your opinion.

Judy Seale

Golf Captain

As Roger has already alludedto in his article, we have beenthrough a very interestingwinter and spring weather-wise. Of course, now thatsummer is upon us we findourselves dealing with freshchallenges that the climatepresents us with.

Apart from cutting the greensdaily, the roughs twice a weekand the fairways four times aweek, we still have to ensurethat the putting surfaces arequick and true (just how ourmembers like them). Back inearly May we were alreadycutting the greens at a height ofjust 3.5mm. Many clubs won’tgo below 4-5mm at anytime inthe year.

I was very happy with theresults of the greens drainageon the 8th, 14th and 15thholes on Longcross. We createdvery little disturbance andmanaged to get the membersback on the greens within aweek. So far we have drained 7greens on the Longcross and 3greens on the Bernard Huntand it is our ambition tocomplete 3 more greens onBernard Hunt in October.

The new bunkers on the front9 on Bernard Hunt have settledvery well and once again wewill be continuing the bunkerprogramme on the back 9.Already this summer manymembers will have noticed thatwe have topped up the rest ofthe bunkers on the complex, although we will still have aproblem with soil contamina-tion until they are all rebuilt.

The new tee on the 8thLongcross did sufferthroughout the winter andspring but hopefully nowmembers will be seeing thebenefits of the considerableinvestment that we have madehere. Fortunately the new teeon the 17th has settled in a lotbetter which is due mainly to itbeing in a more open spacethan the 8th.

I am very pleased also with thegorse planting on the 16thBernard Hunt and the heatherplanting on the 4th hole. It ismy intention to give these twoholes more definition andmake them look far moreinteresting when standing onthe tee.

Cutting the greens daily, the roughstwice a week and the fairwaysfour times a week, just how ourmembers like them

Hopefully members will beseeing the benefits of theconsiderable investment thatwe have made here

Ten Questions

How long have youbeen with Sky TV?

I moved to Sky TV nearly 20 years agowhen I was the tender age of 32. I haveenjoyed myself so much in that timealthough I have this reoccurring nightmarethat someone will find me out one day andcall it a day.

You must have seen some changesin that time?

You can say that again. In my first yearwith sky it sometimes felt that I wasn’t in astudio. I felt like I was at home in mycomfortable armchair reading the paper. Isuppose that was because nobody waswatching! One of the early goals we setourselves was to get into 10 million homesand we recently achieved it. Not bad foran outfit that 20 years ago Sir AlexFerguson said “this won’t work”.At Sky we now feel we are firmly part ofthe establishment rather than being onthe outside.

Being in near the start of Sky Sportsyou must have witnessed somegreat events over the years?

In my first year I was present when Faldowon the Open at St Andrews, Sampraswon his first Grand Slam, the US Open,Evander Holyfield in Vegas winning hisfirst world title, The B&H final at Lords,The FA and Scottish Cup Finals, and letsnot forget my first gig for Sky – Darts atPontyns in Skegness.

Why Foxhills?

I joined Foxhills upon the recommendationof my good friend Ray Wilkins. I hadplayed in his charity event over the yearsand noticed how the course and facilitiesgot better and better every year. I lovewinding him up by calling Foxhills “Myclub!”. I used to be a member at a wellknown club not too far from here butmy family and I feel much more welcomeat Foxhills. We enjoy the family atmosphere, thefriendly staff and members and the firstclass service. There are no airs and gracesat Foxhills which is something that welove. Our son Josh and daughter Jemmalove the Spa and Josh is really getting togrips with his golf which is getting me outon the course more now.

What’s your handicap?I am off 18 but like all high handicappers Ihave good days and bad days. I amdetermined to get my handicap downalthough I do find it frustrating sometimes.I know I am improving and for the firsttime in my life I am committed to one cluband the Professionals at Foxhills havetaken me under their wing so there shouldbe no excuses.

What do you likemost about your job?

I have the best seat in the house, watchingthe best football and I love both TV andfootball and I’m getting paid for it. I get tospend time with people I used to pay to goand see. People like Ray Wilkins, RuudHullit (a delightful man), Graham Souness,Andy Gray and countless others. It’s adream job.

And least like?

The travelling

What did you do before Sky?

I started life as a journalist with theWolverhampton Chronicle but after 5months training and 3 months probation Ihad covered 1 Parish Council meeting andsomething else just as memorable so I leftfor London and joined Hayters the sportsagency. Then I was 4 years in Liverpoolworking for commercial radio (and where

I met my beautiful wife Julia) then 2 yearsin Manchester working for Piccadillyradio. That was where I first met RayWilkins who said to me “you need to beworking in God’s country fella” and thatwas when I returned to London to try toget in TV. I started as a scriptwriter forTV-AM and then was asked to present thesports news. The rest is history.

What was it like working onbreakfast television?

Apart from having to get up at 2.30amMonday to Friday it was fantastic.Breakfast telly was new to the UK and tobe on live television 3 hours a day, 5 days aweek was a fantastic grounding. I metsome fantastic people and saw some funnythings in the near 8 years I was there.

Who did you meet and whatwere some of the funny thingsthat you saw?

In those days all the stars would come into see us whereas now you have to go andsee them in their hotel. I remember JoanCollins coming in when she was veryfamous with Dynasty and because GylesBrandreth was sick, she ended up readingthe viewers letters out. Another one wassitting next to the great Charlton Hestonwho kept insisting I call him Chuck. I justcouldn’t. How do you call Moses – Chuck? One bitter-sweet memory was meeting my

hero Ali but only after the Parkinsons hadstarted to take hold. The Bee gees, DudleyMoore, the list goes on and on.One of my everlasting memories of thattime was in the run-up to a general electionwhen Labour party stalwart Denis Healeyand my co-presenter Anne Diamond had abust up on live TV which ended with himstorming off camera and Anne in tears inthe loo. I was left with having to hold thefort, live on TV, for 20 minutes whilst offcamera Dennis was having a punch-up withour political editor.

Oh they were the days.

healthspa

We’d like to tell you how this was all well-planned. Butthe truth is, this wonderful space, was borne out of amistake. Faced with plans that showed a poolside saunaand steam room that would have been very cosy wedecided to put the sauna outside. And to stop it lookinglike a shed, we added a few other attractions.

So depending on how you look at it we either have themost beautiful garden that complements the ethos of thehealthspa or the world’s most expensive sauna. Thisgarden hosts one of England’s first Natural SwimmingPools. This natural swimming pool purifies the waterusing plants and minerals and is absolutely chemical-free. Alongside our Sauna from Finland, Hot tub andShower experience. Around the Spa lawn we have theseven Indian sandstone bays, providing a little privacyand wonderful relaxing views. The planting in front ofeach one is distinct. Different colours and differentscents. Where we can offer the Foxhills outside SpaGarden treatment selection here.

Foxhills Fitness Charity Day in aid ofCardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)

Early one Saturday morning, the 16th to be exact, the Fitness Team led by myself and Kerry Lagdenhosted a charity Aerobathon in aid of CRY. The eventconsisted of 10 classes as well as a Decathlon runningover 4 hours.

The event kicked off at 9am sharp with a high energy Zumba classtaught by Caroline Parsons in dance studio, Tom Hall made a guestappearance teaching a dance anthems Spin class in the studio.

After well earned refreshments of fruit, juice and Jaffa cakes itbegan again. This time with Combat taught energetically by JonHawkins (with a bad back!) in the dance studio and along sidean 80’s Spin session taught by Dawn Adams sportingthose 80’s musts have fluorescent leg warmers.

For those who like the fresh air Carey Zaltsman heldan Aqua class in the outdoor pool assisted by a ratherenthusiastic James Webster who unfortunately didn’twear a tiara unlike all the Aqua ladies. The ladieswere also joined by our new addition to the gym teamChris Williams.

Our resident Kerry Lagden kicked off the second halfof the morning with her highly popular L.B.T.Enthusiasm was high, music was pumping and even acouple of the men braved the squats and lunges, welldone chaps.

The event wouldn’t be complete without a bit of comedy,so putting myself up for a giggle I lead my usual Spinclass complete with Michael Jackson outfit along to;you guessed it a Michael Jackson soundtrack.

With the finish line in sight and after a quick refuel andthe odd change of clothes, Kerry Lagden ensured thatany last energies were used up with a Step class andalong side a Spin class with 70’s themed Stuart Fawcettcomplete with giant golden sunglasses. We would like tocongratulate Andrew Butcher who managed to stayed onhis bike for all the Spinning classes, completing 80 milesand burning over 4000 calories.

Finally it was time to stretch those aching limbs, awelcome chill out after 4 hours of madness.

Many calories burnt, sweat and fancy dress it was time to call it aday. Great fun was had by all whether it was doingAerobics, Spinning, Aqua or the Decathlon.

I think everyone would agree a good time was had by all.

On behalf of all the Gym Team we would like to say abig thank you to the 70 plus members who attended, whether it was for 1 hour or for all 4 hours.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all theinstructors and guests who took part. Well done to allthat helped ensure the event ran smoothly. Before I signoff I wanted to say one last special thank you to KerryLagden who played a major part in the organising andrunning of this event, without her commitment anddrive the event would not have been such a success.

Hope to see you at the next event, look out on the noticeboards and Fox–e for new classes and event in September.

Dean Tooby, Leisure Manager

“A brilliant morning of fun andexercise. Well worth £20! All theinstructors threw themselves into itfully making the atmosphereamazing. Let’s do it again nextweek! Thanks Kerry”Kate Heald, member
