Friends of Elissa Roth in memory of her brother, Charles Gingold, A’H; Sorah and Chaim Shain & Family in appreciation of all

    From The Rabbi’s Desk

    Rabbi Yisroel Edelman

This week’s Parsha of Vayechi is a “Parsha Setumah” – a sealed portion because in the Sefer Torah there is no spacing to separate it from the previous Parsha of Vayigash. Rav Shamshon Raphael Hirsch points out that this portends disaster. The process of B’nai Yisrael becoming “sealed” (quarantined!) in Egypt had already begun. The process was subtle, but before you realized it the enslavement began. The last passuk of the Vayigash

proves this. וישב ישראל בארץ גשן ויאחזו בה ויפרו וירבו מאד- “The Jewish people settled in Egypt, in the district of Goshen, and they acquired property there, they were fertile and population increased greatly.”

Rav Hirsch point out the word ויאחזו means not just “acquire” but also “to take hold” meaning that the Egyptian lifestyle began influencing B’nai Yisrael. When we become comfortable in Galus and begin thinking and acting like an Egyptian we are in trouble. This was the beginning of the galus. This is an important lesson for us in this difficult time. In a sense we are enslaved by COVID protocols and they strongly influence our lives but they are temporary and we long for freedom. May Hashem have rachmones and send the Refuah Shelayma very soon to all of us.
