Becoming Your Own Boss Through

Franchising Business

With the many demands of starting up a start up business and the high level of risk involved in it, business franchise is becoming more and more popular as the easiest and less costly way of putting up an individual entrepreneurial venture.

Franchising business is the method of acquiring the business strategies of an established franchisor by a franchisee that could either be individual or group entrepreneurs. From the point of view the owners of an established business franchise, franchising is a way of distributing their products and services without the risk of incurring losses most of the time.

Business franchising enables the franchisor higher profitability with less loss risk while providing franchisee with better franchise opportunities. Business franchising gives budding entrepreneurs a more sure way of establishing their own business with minimal loss risk as well. However, although the viability of business franchises is sounder than other type of business, the financial capital that would pay for the franchise fee is greater than the capital needed to set up one's own company from scratch.

There are two types of business franchises namely trade name franchise and business format franchise. In a trade name franchise,

WELCOME TO THE FRANCHISE

TABLOIDWelcome to the very first edition of The Franchise Tabloid, an informative paper that has been put together to give people an insight to the goings on of the Franchising world.

If you have only ever heard of Franchising through other people talking about it, and are interested, but do not really know much about Franchising, then this paper will server you well!

If you have just been made redundant and are thinking about what to do next, or perhaps even just thinking “What just happened?” then this paper will have some great advice and tips for you to follow in order to make the next step of your life journey just a little bit easier.

Offering you an insight to the various types of business available in the Franchise market, how to get in touch with those businesses for more information, and, above all, providing an insight into what those people who already work in or operate Franchise businesses have to say, The Franchise Tabloid should hold a good level of interest for most of you!

We have been in touch with both Franchisors and their Franchisees and asked them for their take on what they feel Franchising is all about. Sometimes people have been frank, and to be honest, sometimes this is exactly what people just starting out in the world of Franchising need!

Hopefully throughout reading this Tabloid you will learn what I have learned in my recent past - that people in Franchising are, after all, people just like you and me, but with a little bit of insider knowledge to help you on a bit! PP

the franchisor sells only the trade/brand name and leaves the franchisee with the total operations of his business. While the business format franchise includes also other services such as site selection, training of employees, product supply, marketing strategies and other important things to run the business franchise.

When deciding to purchase a business franchise, one must examine first the market for the viability of the business opportunity for a certain product. If possible, it would be better to scout for strategic locations where the business franchise will be located. Foot traffic in the location should be carefully noted and observed. Heavy foot traffic would ensure a good business opportunity. Once these are laid out, it is now time to look for the franchise provider.

When choosing the franchisor, examine the franchise package offered by the franchisor to franchisee. Study carefully

the franchise agreements and if possible attend franchising seminars provided by the franchisor to fully understand the business franchise package that one is buying.

Timing is also very important. Do not rush into a franchise-buying spree just because that product franchise is in demand in the market. Study the market trends and foresee whether the business franchise would still be in demand in the long term.

The return of investment for a business franchise usually takes two to three years, so it is imperative that the business franchise must withstand for at least two years to just even reach the break even point. There are a lot of business opportunities available for business franchising venture. The success and failure of business franchising depends of whether the franchisee have prepared well before buying a business franchise. PB

7 Key Reasons Why Women Franchise

We explore some of the reasons why women look at Franchise Businesses.

1) Increased FlexibilityWomen franchise owners report that the ability to be their own boss and be in charge of their own working routine, makes franchising an ideal option for them. Business women can ditch the inflexibility of corporate life for the freedom of business ownership, and women from other walks of life see franchising as the perfect route into the business world.

2) Support readily availableWomen are by nature supportive and work well in atmospheres where support is readily given and received. Franchisors give all the practical support needed to start a business, and continue to do so throughout the franchise contract. Many excellent franchises also encourage active networking and support between franchisees and give all the training that is required to build and grow your business.

3) A fresh startRe-entering the working world after a break looking after children, can seem like a daunting prospect. Some women feel out-of-date professionally, or have lost their previous business network of clients and colleagues. Starting a franchise can provide the opportunity to do something fun and totally different.

Franchisors are often looking for women-returners as they are confident they can help potential franchisees apply their skills in a new context, they do not have to have a background in the industry concerned.

4) Lower risk“A third of the female population would start a business if it wasn’t for the fear of failure.”

Franchises are tried and tested formulas, franchisees are buying into a business that they already know works. Many women hold the family purse-strings, and juggle a string of family obligations and can feel risk adverse. Franchising is a reassuring, low risk option for starting a business.

5) Franchises for all interestsFranchises can be found in a huge variety of industries and interest areas. Women have found franchises which match their hobbies (eg dance and drama), their educational background (eg tutoring), or their personality style (eg business and social networking). Some franchises are also particularly designed with women in mind, and sell goods and services for a female audience (eg jewellery and clothes), and some franchises are perfectly suited to women with experience in child care and children’s activities.

6) No need to reinvent the wheelWomen are, by nature, efficient and pragmatic, and which makes franchising appealing as there is no need to reinvent the wheel. The business has already been created, and the formula is proven. Women can launch their businesses and start earning income within a matter of weeks.

7) Earn a full-time salary in part-time hoursThis has got to be every woman’s dream! With franchising it is really possible. Many franchises can provide an excellent income for those that only want to work a few days a week, or only during school hours, or in the evenings. Women find their working life becomes more fulfilling and lucrative through franchising. AB

by their former employer. Open a franchise and take your career to the next level.

Consider the following points:

• Never be made redundant again• Create your own security• Determine your own income• Work the hours that suit you• Do a job you really enjoy.

Franchises provide the opportunity to take control of a ready-made business. Starting a business with a proven business model and established brand has been shown to be more successful than starting your own independent business. Franchised businesses have weathered the recessional storm extremely well.

I hope you find that one of the businesses listed with us to your liking and suits your needs. PP

ABLEWORLD WELCOME ON BOARD THEIR LATEST FRANCHISE PARTNERS

Ableworld, the UK’s leading mobility retailer, have recently welcomed on board their two latest franchise partners. Ableworld, who are very strong in the north west of the country are particularly pleased that the two new franchises are in the east of the country; one in Darlington and one in Newark-on-Trent.

First off the blocks were Steve and Julie Cunningham (pictured) who opened the doors of their new mobility super store on August 25th. Julie, who previously spent over 30 years in financial services, added “Steve and I decided that we wanted to

have a change of direction and also wanted the opportunity of working together. The mobility sector is one of the few retail propositions that make commercial sense at the moment with many more people living longer and requiring a little bit of assistance. We spent over two years searching for the right opportunity and we were lucky that Ableworld were looking to expand their successful concept in the north east”.

Following very shortly behind were Mark Hennis and Naomi Moore who, after a very short lead time, were able to start trading at their store in Newark early in September. When asked why they choose to partner with Ableworld, Mark said “Having researched numerous businesses over the last year we were looking for not only a great product but also a trustworthy and competent business partner we could work with. With Ableworld and the founder’s extensive retail experience combined with the backing of his knowledgeable and dedicated staff we believe we have found a good match.”

Another store is due to open in Lancashire later this month and Ableworld intend to continue opening new outlets at a steady but realistic pace in 2012.

An Exciting Challenge

Taking that exciting and challenging step into self employment can be daunting for some. Choosing franchising could be the best option for you.

Finding out about a particular franchise by visiting and meeting the franchisor is one thing. You will find more from different perspectives through speaking to existing franchisees, banks, accountants, suppliers and the BFA. The franchisor should actively encourage this.

You should never feel rushed and should be able to ask any question you want and get a good detailed answer when looking at a franchise.

Feeling fulfilled and happy by owning your own franchise doesn’t have to be a dream, don’t listen to the negative headlines, speak to people who know the facts, like the British Franchise Association.

I am passionate about ethical franchising and if I can be of any help to you please feel free to email me with any questions at [email protected]

Good luck with your life.

ConfidenceIs Money

Self-confidence is an attitude which allows individuals to have positive yet realistic views of themselves and their situations.

Self-confident people trust their own abilities, have a general sense of control in their lives, and believe that, within reason, they will be able to do what they wish, plan, and expect.

Having self-confidence does not mean that

individuals will be able to do everything. Self-confident people have expectations that are realistic. Even when some of their expectations are not met, they continue to be positive and to accept themselves.

People who are not self-confident depend excessively on the approval of others in order to feel good about themselves. They tend to avoid taking risks because they fear failure. They generally do not expect to be successful. They often put themselves down and tend to discount or ignore compliments paid to them. By contrast, self-confident people are willing to risk the disapproval of others because they generally trust their own abilities. They tend to accept themselves; they don't feel they have to conform in order to be accepted.

Self-confidence is not necessarily a general characteristic which pervades all aspects of a person's life. Typically, individuals will have some areas of their lives where they feel quite confident, e.g.,academics, athletics, while at the same time they do not feel at all confident in other areas, e.g., personal appearance, social relationships.

There is no greater asset for an entrepreneur than an absolute conviction that you know what you're doing. If you don't feel sure of yourself, why should anyone else trust you?

This is obvious. But for most of us, confidence is something that comes and goes. What's more, it often vanishes unexpectedly, just when you need it most.

When I feel confident, everything seems to work better. When I feel insecure, nothing goes right. I become self conscious. I begin to doubt my own abilities, and mistrust other people as well. While confidence is useful for everyone, it is particularly vital when you are in business for yourself. When you work for a company, your very position gives you a sense of legitimacy. Entrepreneurs stand on our own, and we mustn't be seen to be quivering in our high heels or wing tips. We demand to be taken seriously. Everything about us should inspire trust.

In his influential book Learned Optimism, psychologist Martin Seligman cites scientific data showing that pessimistic people have a firmer grasp on reality than

Franchise Business Basics

Buying a franchise business may seem to be a seductive offer that you cannot possibly ignore.

On one level that may be true, but the thing about franchise business, no matter how lucratively attractive it seems, is that it is successful only on a case-to-case basis. A franchise business may boom for your neighbour but not exactly fare as well as for you. Despite the fact that a business opportunity such as this is something that stands out considerably in success rate as compared to other business opportunities you are given at this time, you need to evaluate certain things before you dash on

your way to becoming a franchisee or franchisor.

Simply put, franchise exists when two parties, called the franchisee and the franchisor agree together legally. The franchisor allows the franchisee to distribute or sell the services, material or immaterial, up to a certain degree in a given location at a specific time period. During the duration of the franchise business, the franchisee owes the franchisor royalty fees for using the brand and generating income out of it.

Though unbeknownst to many people, a franchise business has some subtypes within itself, and if you are interested in engaging in a franchise business, you need to know the fine print of the franchise business you intend to engage in. To be an

effective franchisee, you must be able to know your obligations and dues from the legal agreement you will be making with the franchisor, as well as possible penalties and changes in royalty rates.

After having taken care of the legalities, the next thing you ought to do as you engage in this franchise business is to scope out the demographics of the particular area from which you will hold your franchise business. What is its target market? Is it youth-oriented? On what times of the day are there more potential customers? Align all these considerations with your business goal and you are already on your way to brewing a commendable start-up. Location is vital since it will have telltale signs of being a commercial hub or a remote area that few people visit frequently. If possible, find the franchise areas near main roads

since that's where most of the action is.While you're at it, you may also want to consider the density of the entire franchise business in the whole area of your choice. If there are more branches of that franchise business, you might be having some in-house competition. If you do find a prime spot that has no form of that particular franchise you intend to be a franchisee of, so much the better.

Like any other business endeavour, you may also need to count the cost it will take not just to pay royalties, but also including marketing strategies and other maintaining expenses. You must also be ready for possible problems that may arise. For instance, that particular business you chose to franchise in encountered a major problem. It will affect all its franchise counterparts. DB

LighterLifeClaire Lamputt, LighterLife Counsellor in Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan discovered LighterLife in 2008 when one of her biggest frustrations was not being in charge of her own destiny. At the time, Claire was working as a physiotherapist for the NHS helping children and young people address their problems.

During her time as a LighterLife franchise owner, Claire has utilised her experience of working in the local area and her network of

contacts to build her business. She recognises that this has developed a new set of skills, which has built her self

confidence that has led to a stronger belief in what she can achieve.

Claire says: “I feel I am really privileged to work with people who want to make a change. I can help them to unlock their potential, build their confidence and reshape their habits to help them lead a healthier, happier and LighterLife. It’s amazing to see how my clients change during their LighterLife Journey and weight-loss is just one of the things they achieve! I am a living and breathing example of that and I am much happier with my new life.”

With LighterLife’s in-house payment plan available to assist with the franchise fee there has never been a better time to join.

How to Franchise Your Business

What is Involved In Franchising Your Business? Franchising can be an excellent way of expanding your business. However like everything in life it is not suitable for every business. There are a few general "rules of thumb" that will enable you to establish if, in principle, franchising would be worth considering as an expansion route for your business.

Principles Of Franchising Your Business1) The business should be proven. The

business model should be tried and tested and substantially 'de-bugged' under realistic commercial conditions

2) The business must be replicable 3) The skills and know-how need to be

easily taught to franchisees4) The business model being franchised

must be capable of generating sufficient profit to provide a worthwhile income for both the franchisor and the franchisees

5) Franchising should not be regarded as a means of off-loading problems or getting rid of difficult or unprofitable outlets. Rather, it should be viewed constructively as an integral part of your expansion strategy

6) As a franchisor you must be able to develop and maintain good working relationships with franchisees and build a culture where mutual co-operation and benefit prevails

7) When you start franchising, your business will come under scrutiny, particularly from the banks, as they will be asked to lend to some of your franchisees. Amongst other things they will want to see that you have the financial resources to build and support a franchise network

Before committing any major resources to franchising your business you need to get professional advice from a specialist company. An expert should be flexible with an approach in line with your business needs. As an example, they should be able

to provide you with initial support to help you develop your franchise system and then leave you to implement it in-house.

Step 1: The EvaluationThe first step is to confirm that your business model can be franchised and identify how your franchise system would operate.

Step 2: The Franchise System The remaining work would take you to the point where you were ready to either set up a pilot operation, or begin marketing the franchise and recruiting the franchisees. A good expert can help you, and may be able to produce or supply templates on the following requirements:• Developing the franchise brochure and

recruitment system Continued on page 7

6 Key Questions

We ask some of our advertisers to answer some key questions about Franchising.

If you have been considering your options recently, or looking into the merits of franchise models, then you will likely have some burning questions. The questions we asked our franchise advertisers are the sort of typical questions that people new to franchising, or who are considering buying into a franchise model often ask.

Our advertisers provided us a set of very different answers that carry some extremely poignant messages for anybody thinking about franchise business models for the first time, or

even those with experience who are, perhaps, looking for a slightly different take on what they already know about franchising.

Q1) Why is franchising a good way to start out in business?

PBo: You get to leverage the experience of people who have been there before and done it successfully.

BO: Franchising is a fantastic way to start out (and grow) in business, by becoming a franchise owner you will achieve all the lifestyle desires of being your own boss, build a business where you receive the fruits of your labour and be able to do this operating within an existing business framework with many of the initial headaches and costs removed. A franchise owner will benefit from existing brands, marketing support, systems and processes provided by the Franchisor.

LH: From a franchisees perspective, they will benefit from the development of ideas already established – learning from the mistakes that one always makes when starting out. There is a lovely expression – ‘You are working for yourself but not by yourself’.

The support when franchisees face the inevitable challenges means that the business can move to success faster. In addition, the general public largely believe that using a franchised operation will (according to the Proud to Franchise Survey 2006) that they will get better service, will be more valued and like the fact that their spend is kept locally in the community.

PBg: I would say that everyone at some point looks at someone who owns their own business and wonders how it would be if they could do it. Starting your own business is tough though as you need a combination of things to make it work. A fresh idea and product that will sell. You need to plan for at least 3-5 years for finance as you will not have the income you may require or be used to, this is even more crucial if you have a mortgage and family to sustain. It is important that you have the patience that is required to start a business from scratch. With a franchised business you have the choice of many different ready-made businesses that are tried and tested, so you basically have a massive head start. Your income is pretty much from day one and all you need to do is launch your presence into your chosen territory. It's the perfect way to work with

independence but with the support of a larger model and personnel.

MW: Franchising is an excellent way to enter the world of business for anyone, whether it be someone ‘taking the plunge’ for the first time or someone who has experience of the business environment.

A good Franchise has all the systems in place to give a new Franchisee all the tools at their disposal to succeed, whether that be sales, marketing, operations or accounting.

This gives a Franchise advantages over someone starting a new business on their own as the start-up costs are significantly lower and the learning curve (and therefore the time taken to achieve a satisfactory Net Profit and personal income) is very much shorter than an independent start up. Add to that the ability of the Franchisor and Franchisees to gauge the performance of an individual business against the rest of the group (as all the businesses are essentially the same) and the effects of national marketing, shared knowledge and systems improvements provided by the Franchisor and this gives a Franchisee a huge edge on any independent business.

Nothing is guaranteed in life and nothing is achieved without hard work, but a Franchisee should see returns within months, not years, in comparison to their independent colleagues.

Q2) Do you need any business knowledge to run a franchise?

BO: Ultimately to become a franchise owner you need to understand the key principles of business, if you didn’t have a grasp of the basics you would unlikely be looking to become self-employed!

PBe: It helps but it's not essential, many of our most successful franchisees had not run a business before. A strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and develop are the most important traits for a franchisee.

LH: Some franchises need business knowledge before you begin - business knowledge required for our business is taught during the initial training. However an aptitude for and a keen interest in business are both critical and we like to have people on board who demonstrate good understanding of the type of business model we operate – they do this by asking

certain questions or putting key things into their own business plans.

Everyone has different personal drivers for going into business – although the usual goal is to make money of course!

PBg: Having a knowledge of business is important when buying a franchise, but if the training and support network you enter into is what it should be, you will have all the products, people and infrastructure - you will only need a basic knowledge. You will learn many things about business through the ongoing support of the franchisor.

SM: For a Tatty Bumpkin franchise we don’t ask for specific business skills, but more a passion for the product and a desire to exceed.

Previous sales experience is of course and advantage, but we have found that some of our most successful franchisees have not had previous business knowledge, but have applied hard work and passion to what they do, learning the rest along the way.

Q3) How much help and support do you give to your franchisees?

AD: Initial training is carried out at our head office and at one of our owned head office owned Pistachios in the park cafes. Training will include technical advice on how to successfully run a cafe as well as practical experience working in one of head office cafes.

PBo: As much as they need…and then a little bit more.

SM: We have a very good support system, but whilst encouraging the franchisees to take decisions and responsibility for themselves. We have regular phone calls, sales performance charts and lots of online resources.

At the end of the day I think we have been surprised to find that the best support of all has been the franchise network themselves - after all they are the people out there on the ground facing the challenges everyday. The Facebook group has probably been the most useful tool of all.

PBg: A franchisor is obligated to help a franchisee in any part of the business. Help and support levels will be outlined in the initial contracts, but it is important that the franchisor doesn't shirk their ongoing and unlimited responsibility to the franchisee. After all, the franchisee has bought into the

idea of the franchise product and has put their trust in it. The success story of the franchise depends on the success of the franchisees.

MW: Aside from topping up our Franchisees leads with national marketing campaigns in publications such as the Daily Mail and Daily Express (the cost of which is included in their ordinary fees – no extra fee is levied) we focus very much on help and assistance in making our Franchisees as much money as possible.

New Franchisees should always be assured that when they buy in to a Franchise that the Franchisor can demonstrate a commitment to their profitability, and therefore their earnings.

Our help and support is targeted to that end and that end alone. We monitor all our Franchisees performances on a daily basis, put marketing plans in place that are affordable and are then ramped up as profitability allows.

Our Franchisees are given ‘growth plans’ so they have a road map in front of them at each stage of their development and they

can see what they need to do to get to the next stage.

Insurances have been put in place to protect them so that if something does go wrong their business is not at jeopardy and, since we have had their businesses valued, we also actively encourage them, if they wish to, to open multiple branches.

This has the effect of multiplying their earnings whilst also building them another asset which can be sold later if they wish for many, many times the original fee.

Q4) How soon does a franchisee start making money?

SM: A franchisee can start making money immediately if they have done their planning well with a business like ours. One franchisee in particular was so driven she secured contracts in her first week, but we always say allow 3 months for cashflow to really start.

PBg: In any franchise package, you will be given a business plan and cash flow that will show you exactly what you need to do to make money from day one. Although a

ready made business, hard work and the ability to follow the plan laid out by the franchisor will make sure that you will earn the money you expect. As long as these cash flows are realistic and genuinely achievable, you will be fine.

MW: This is dependant on how effectively the individual Franchisee implements the systems they are given but in general Franchisees should be profitable within 3 -4 months.

PBe: Because our franchisees are supplying fast selling products into an established market, the revenue stream starts approximately 6 weeks after initial training is completed, therefore about 8 weeks.

AD: Immediately, but there are no guarantees, however the projected earning are a realistic estimate of what a franchisee should earn. Successful franchisees can earn in excess of the projections, however the ultimate success is down to each individual franchisee.

BO: Most businesses do not make money in their first year, often not their second year either. Franchising typically has a much better initial return on investment,

our centres generally cover their monthly operational costs from month one.

Q5) What happens if a franchisee is having problems with operating the franchise?

PBe: We see it as our responsibility as a franchisor to help franchisees with any problems they may be experiencing at any time.

However, our franchise is very simple to operate and franchisees rarely encounter problems which we cannot help them overcome fairly easily. Our company ethos is very much that our relationship is a mutually dependent partnership and the more help and support we provide, the more likely it is that both parties will prosper.

PBo: We talk about it. Then we agree a joint approach and fix it.

BO: If a franchisee is having issues with their own centre, it is important to address the core of the issue. Franchisors typically will offer good advice to how to increase trading potential and will have the technical expertise to resolve any operational issues that may arise.

MW: Normally we will have picked up on a non-performing Franchisee business before they will! Since we monitor various Key Performance Indicators within their business and can compare their performance against other Franchisees it is very easy for us to home in on the areas that the individual needs to improve on. In that instance a plan will be agreed upon and implemented by the Franchisee to put things right before any long-term damage is done to that Franchisees business.

LH: There can be a number of reasons for this – some of them generated by the franchisee, some the franchisor and some generated by the franchise model itself. We haven’t experienced this but our operating manuals are clear – we’re here to make the business a success with the franchisees and we’ll do whatever we can, depending on the problem experienced.

But it also comes down to the fact that the franchisee must be accountable for him or herself – it is their own business and they must do everything they can to make a success. If the model is full time – do it full time. If the model requires a type of advertising – make it happen. There is no room for apathy – but lots of support for

Industry FocusUnveiling the world of international transport and its future for franchising. Gary Clere, founder of Cargocall, gives his view.

Some call it “Logistics” some call it “Freight Forwarding” some call it “Shipping” but whatever you call it the world of international transport is still shrouded in mystery for many. Yet without

it the modern world would cease to function.

Shipping goods across continents is obviously not a new phenomenon, it’s been around for a few thousand years, but it’s an industry that still forms the backbone of modern globalisation. More than ever before businesses import and export goods, and moving these goods across international borders with efficiency is essential to a good supply chain.

So what’s behind the world of international transport? Well as you’d expect there are lots of trucks, aircraft, ships and trains not to mention the millions of acres of warehouse space but the fundamental ingredient is the people that make it all come together. Good communication with well trained, service minded people is really what makes the international transport world turn on its axis.

Air freight, sea freight and road freight are obviously the main three methods of moving goods to or from overseas locations. Rail freight plays a part too but to a lesser degree. Each transport method has its own technicalities and each differs

from the other. For example if you need something in New York within 2 days then air freight is your only option because a sea freight service will take 10 days to arrive. These differences mean that the international transport industry has traditionally spawned companies that specialise in their own sector of air, sea, road or rail transport but the trend is changing with market conditions and there’s no doubt that the international transport industry is trying to grow out of its fragmentation.

Those companies which procure transport services are changing the way they do business too. Once-upon-a-time companies would employ a Shipping Manager to source and manage freight forwarders, shipping lines and hauliers in the delivery of the services needed. There was plenty of expertise on this side of the desk but today that idea is changing rapidly as companies rationalise on personnel and out-source huge transport and warehousing contracts to third parties. Small to medium sized companies often have no specialist transport or Shipping Manager anymore and this role is often tacked on to employees with other responsibilities. As a result expertise is lost and those responsible for shipping

find life a lot easier purchasing from a single source and the industry has slowly come to realise that and the buzz word for this is “3PL” - Third Party Logistics.

3PL companies are those who bring all methods of transport together under one roof mixing their own infrastructure along with sub-contracted services. For the customer the jargon is largely irrelevant and the most important thing is getting the job of moving goods from one country to another done well. That still boils down to good communication with conscientious, knowledgeable people who can be relied on to find a solution to every transport requirement to or from any continent.

What all this means for the future of Freight Forwarding franchising is only positive as the market continues to out-source contracts to companies that are capable of fitting together the logistics jigsaw.

those that genuinely try. If franchisees acknowledge they have bought a set of processes – and then follow those processes – the franchisor is better able to establish where the problems might lie and therefore be able to resolve them.

We haven’t faced this challenge yet but we’re ready for it when and if it happens. One important aspect is recognising that franchisees have different external pressures (family, health etc) and we don’t want to be discussing every last detail of people’s lives but keeping us informed is deemed very important – two way communication is critical.

PBg: If this is the case then the support network should kick in. Everything should be analysed so that it can be established what is going wrong.

Again, it is the success of the franchisee that will make the franchise a success, so it is up to the franchisor to make sure that it works. It is important to say that if the franchisee isn't operating correctly, then re-training may be required or even a review of the training process. Dependent on the findings.

Q6) Is a franchise really like running your own business?

BO: Absolutely but with much less hassle!

PBg: If this is the case then the support network should kick in. Everything should be analysed so that it can be established what is going wrong. LH: It’s better than running your own business since a large part of the risk element is removed – the branding should be established, the model in place – if you follow it, you’re still running your own business – we’re your support team!

SM: Yes, I think it really is for most people. A franchise like ours gives them creativity and flexibility, but within a structured format. However at the end of the day, If you are a true entrepreneur you will end up starting up your own idea, but for most people they lack the creative energy to come up with the initial ideas.

What franchisees are good at are implementing someone else’s ideas, and often they have complimentary skills to the franchisor - its a match made in heaven!

AD: Yes, its your money and your destiny, the franchisor is there as a mentor encouraging you to succeed, the rewards are 91-94% all yours.

MW: Owning a Franchise is exactly like running your own business – but better!

Since you have your Franchisor to call on plus your fellow Franchisees you have a wealth of experience and know-how completely denied to people who work by themselves.

It’s your business and your profits, just as if you were on your own, but you can be successful much quicker within the Franchise environment than starting up by yourself as all the mistakes have been made for you. The only way you can fail then is if you ignore that fact...

Securing Finance for Your Franchise

How often have you seen a franchise or other business opportunity advertisement and felt you would really like to get in on that. But if only you had the money?

If you are like most who are seeking greater opportunity and wealth, this probably happens with you more often than you care to admit, except perhaps in strictly private conversations.

When the average person sees one of these opportunities, or has a similar idea of his own, the problems of startup capital may seem formidable, but in reality, they may not be. In fact, just about anyone with a good credit record and an "insider's sense of business" can get the capital he or she needs, whenever it is needed. The secret is in knowing how to put together a proper proposal, and to present it to the right person.

The first thing you are going to need is a complete business plan. This is a complete and detailed description of exactly how you intend to operate the proposed business.

Your business plan should detail precisely the product or products you plan to sell; how you are going to produce or manufacture the product; your costs (inventory costs if you are purchasing them from a supplier); who is going to sell those products for you; how they are going to be sold; the attendant costs; when you expect to recuperate your initial investment; your plans for growth or expansion; and the total amount you are going to need to make it all work according to your plan. Your business plan must be detailed - complete with projected income and expense figures - through at least the first three years of business.

Now, assuming you have your business plan all worked out, put together and ready for presentation with your request for capital, let us consider your capitalization proposal.

First, keep in mind that whenever you ask somebody for money, whether it is for a small personal loan or a large amount of money to finance a business, you are involved in a selling situation. You have to prepare a "sales presentation" just as if you were getting ready to sell a car or a fridge.

Within this sales presentation you must have all the facts and figures; you must anticipate the questions and the possible objections of the prospective lender with answers or explanations; and you must "package" it as impressively as you would yourself for an audience with the president of the likes of Microsoft.

The more money you ask for, the more "in-the-know" will be the people you want to borrow from, and so the more detailed and organised your proposal must be. This should not cause you too much worry however, because you can hire an accountant to help you put it together properly, once you have got the facts and have a business plan he can work from.

Look at it this way: The more money you request for your business, the more your lenders or prospective investors are going to want to know about you, your planning, and your business. They want to be impressed with the fact that you have done your homework; they want to see that you have researched everything and documented your facts and figures; they want to be assured by your presentation that investing in your business will make money for them. It is just that simple at the bottom line. Unless you can instill confidence in them with your business plan and loan or investment proposal, they are

just not going to give much positive thought to your request for money.

You will need a balance sheet describing your net worth - the worth of what you own compared to the amount of money you owe. You will also have to prove your stability and money-management talents relative to how successful you have been in paying off past obligations. If you have had credit problems in the past, get them "cleaned up", or at least explained on your file. Do this without fail because prospective lenders or investors will definitely check your credit history.

Now you are ready to start looking for lenders or investors.

Almost all franchisors offer help in setting up with one of their franchises. Most will go out of their way to assist you in getting the financing you need. Some will lend you the entire amount, with payments coming out of the income they expect you to make from their franchise operation. Many will carry this loan themselves, while others will carry part of it and find you a lender to finance the remainder.

Franchisors have two objectives in mind when they offer franchises to the public: They are trying to expand their operation,

Continued on page 16

Page 16: The Franchise Tabloid Issue 1

ISSUE NO 140,000 copies of The Franchise Tabloid distributed

thus increasing their profit, and they are trying to raise capital for themselves. Generally speaking, if you have a good credit history, and if they feel you have the necessary business personality to achieve success with one of their operations, they will do everything within their power to get you in a franchise outlet. Keep this in mind - they want you, and they will help you.

Many people seem to be unaware that most of today's largest corporations started on a shoestring - on borrowed money. Many people seem to feel that unless they have got it all "in hand" in savings, then they will just have to keep plugging away until they can save up enough to take the big plunge. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Just a quick bit of research will show that 999 out of every 1,000 businesses were begun on borrowed money.

Look to your family and friends for financial help. Approach them in a business-like manner; tell them about your idea or plans, and ask them for a loan. Agree to sign a formal statement to pay them back in three, five or ten years, with interest. You might even want to think of a partnership arrangement as a way to finance your project, where each partner shares in the profits of the company.

Another common method of obtaining business financing is through second mortgage loans on a home or existing property. It makes sense; you have got "net worth" available that is doing nothing but sitting there. Take this equity and invest it in a worthwhile business, and you could double or triple your net worth each year for the rest of your life.

Going straight to your bank, applying for a business loan and walking out with the money is just about the most unlikely of all your possibilities. Banks want to lend money, and they must lend money in order to stay in business, but most banks are notoriously conservative and extremely reluctant to lend you money unless you have a "regular income" that "guarantees" repayment. If and when you approach a bank for a business loan, you will need all your papers in order - your financial statement, your business plan, credit history and all the endorsements you can get relative to your succeeding with your planned enterprise. In addition, it would be a good idea to take along your accountant just to assure the banker that your plan is verifiable. In the end, you will find that it all boils down to whether or not the bank manager studying your application is sold on you as a good credit risk. Thus you must impress the banker - not only with your proposal, but with your appearance and personality as well. In dealing with

bankers, never show an attitude of doubt or apology. Always be positive and sure of yourself. However, do not come on so strong to them that you are either demanding or overbearing. Just look good, know your stuff, and project an attitude of determination to succeed.

When you are looking for money to move on a business deal, it does not really matter where the money comes from, or how it all comes about. It is important that you get the money, and at terms that are suitable to you. Thus, do not overlook the possibilities of an advertisement for a lender or investor in relevant newspapers. Place your ad in national publications reaching people looking for investments. Other avenues to seriously consider are foundations that offer grants, local investment groups, legal investment groups, business associations, trust companies and other groups or organisations looking for tax shelters.

It may not be the best idea to go to a finance company or other commercial lender of this type for a business loan. The most obvious reason is the high interest rates you have to pay. These companies borrow money from larger money lenders, and then turn around and lend it to you at a

higher interest rate than they pay. Herein lies the means by which they make money from granting loans to you. The more it costs them to provide the money for you, the more it is going to cost you to borrow their money. The only element in your favor when borrowing from one of these agencies is that most will generally lend you money against collateral other lenders just will not accept. They will also pretty much require that your business proposal be backed by the best possible plan.

Finally, the bottom line is this: You must have a well-researched and detailed business plan; you must have all your documents and projections put together in an impressive presentation; and then, you will have to be the one who does the final selling of your proposal to the investor or lender. This means your appearance, personality and attitude, because - make no mistake about it - before anyone lends you any sizable amount of money, they are going to want to take a close look at you personally before they hand over the money.

The different ways of financing a franchise opportunity are as many and varied as your own creativity. The sources of obtaining money are virtually limitless, and available to anyone with an idea.

Autosmart International, the UK’s largest manufacturer of vehiclecleaning products, is celebrating after winning the HSBCFranchisee Support Award for outstanding franchisee support. This is their 4th top award from the bfa in the last 6 years.

Commenting on their success, managing director, Sophie Atkinson said,“this is a really prestigious award and winning it is a huge compliment toour commitment to every franchisee. We’re motivated by helpingfranchisees to build their own successful and profitable businesses. Iam thrilled that our franchisee support has been singled out as the bestby some of the UK’s leading authorities in franchising.

“We’ve been franchising for over 30 years now and we know thatexcellent franchisee support from day 1 really makes the difference.Every new franchisee is allocated his own local business coach to workwith him in the field, helping him improve his sales and productknowledge. In the first 6 months his coach will be with him for around 1in every 4 days. This intensity of support ensures that every franchisee

has the best possible start, whilst building a stable and profitable future for himself and his family. “

The coaches help franchisees throughout their franchise life, whenever they need a bit of additional support or advice. “It is really important to usthat this help is there when franchisees need it,” adds Sophie. “We think that this is all part of being a responsible franchisor and is the reason whywe have invested so heavily in our coaching team.”

Commenting on the win, Cathryn Hayes, head of franchising, HSBC, said: “Providing strategic support to franchisees is critical to being a goodfranchisor. As ever, judging the finalists was difficult but Autosmart demonstrated a level of commitment to their franchise owners that reallyimpressed us. They are a great example of how being innovative and not afraid to take risks to support franchisees can pay off.”

What the managing director says!

Q1) Why is franchising a good way to start out in business? One real and very hard fact about running a business is that not everyone is cut out for it. It takes a lot of time, money, patience and consistency to create something from scratch and then work on it to make it successful. Lots of peo-ple are known to have started a business and then in the first year. A far easier way to run your own business is to invest in a franchise where you already have a suc-cessful business model to work with and you're the one buying someone's successful idea and making it work for you. The current reported success rate of franchise busi-nesses is 92%. Q2) Do you need any business knowledge to run a franchise? No business knowledge is necessary as you will be fully trained in business start-up procedures before you start working.

Q3) How much help and support do you give to your franchisees? All our Franchisees receive as much help and support as they need 7 days a week. We will help with marketing, advertising, finance and whatever you need to make your new business successful. Q4) How soon does a franchisee start making money? The Dog Grooming business is in our opinion recession proof. Every

others having to get the dog groomed on a regular basis. There are over 8 million dogs in the UK;; the most dog populated country in Europe. As soon as you make the decision to join Dog Groom UK we will start your advertising campaign, so hopefully by the time you have completed your course you will have customers waiting for you and quickly making money. Q5) What happens if a franchisee is having problems with operating the franchise? If a franchisee is having problems operating the franchise then the team at Dog Groom UK will do everything possible to help you overcome this. if more training is required then this would not be a problem. We want you to be successful in Dog Grooming and running your own business. Q6) How much does it cost and what do you get for the money? The Franchise Package starts from £15,995 + VAT - Fully Equipped State of the Art Mobile Grooming Salon - 2 Week Training Course to City & Guilds Standard - Pet First Aid Course - - Dog Groom UK Uniform - 3 Months Supply of Shampoo & Conditioner - 12 Months Personal & Custodial Liability Insurance - Your Own DGUK Website Page - Social Networking Sites - Membership to the Pet Care Trust / British Dog Groomers Association - Stationery Start-up Pack - PR and Advertising Start-up Pack - Business & Marketing Training - Advertising & Marketing Support - Annual Conference

The Perils Of Unemployment:

Losing Ourselves! When we lose our jobs, no matter the reason, we lose a big part of our identity. Think of the last several times you met new people. After names are exchanged and polite comments made on whatever event you are attending, the question quickly arises: "What do you do?"

It's a pleasant starting point for conversation and usually gives rise to many questions or a lively discussion. It also allows us to measure and preliminarily judge each other. Until we really start to know someone as an individual, we tend to deal in broad generalisations and stereotypes. By learning what work a stranger performs, we start making assumptions about their values: education, social ranking, work ethic, and personal priorities. Meet someone and talk for a while and unconsciously you are assessing and categorising, much based on occupational data. Meet a custodian, a plumber, a nurse, or a solicitor. Notwithstanding your actual conversation, you have made character judgments that may have little basis in reality but which

allows you to fit that person in a suitable niche in your mental organisation.

When I can no longer say proudly "I'm a mechanic" or "I am a computer operator" my self-esteem plummets. I meet you as a stranger and admit that I am unemployed, perhaps have been for an extended period of time, and I watch my stature diminish in your eyes. I can talk about what I used to do but I feel somehow tainted and incomplete. I talk too much about why I have no job because I want you to realise that it's not my fault, that I really want to work, that there's nothing wrong with me.

The scourge of unemployment is what it does to our minds. We may have watched as our position moved overseas. We may have sensed that our department was running over budget. We may have known that the company was seeking to cut costs. But unless the entire company closed down, or relocated out of the country, we believe in our hearts that we were selected for lay off, over someone else, for a reason. And, being human and vulnerable, we blame ourselves.

Who has ever been terminated, even from a job you don't particularly like, without ruminating over what you could have done differently which might have changed the final outcome. "I should have . . . worked

Saturdays to do that extra project, been more willing to train the boss's idiot son, socialised more with the in-crowd." Whatever it is, you feel guilty. "If I had handled things differently, my family wouldn't be suffering the way they are." You feel not quite good enough, not up to par. Your negative mental tapes start replaying in your head and you start generalising about yourself and your lack of worth. You remind yourself of all the negative things you've done in life and look at yourself as a failure "Why do I always blow it?"

STOP IT

That's a lot easier to say than do, I know. But, it's worth a try. Start by listing all of your positive accomplishments (take your time over this, add items later as you think about them). Anything relating to work is going to be valuable to put in your list but there is more to life than work so look at other areas too.

If your children are not in jail or strung out on drugs, include "good parenting skills" in your list -- you must be doing something right. Include major activities: taking evening classes while continuing to work, volunteering for a charity, running a household while working full time.

When you run out of major areas, start concentrating on smaller items such as cleaning the house, taking your parents out for a special dinner, losing those 10 pounds which had been bothering you. KEEP ON LISTING until you have pages of positive personal accomplishments over your lifetime.

Now compare the list of your positives, all the things that make you what and who you are, the things that make you a valuable and unique human being, and the one item, no current job, that is your primary negative. There really is no comparison at all, is there? Move your mental focus from those old negative tapes by concentrating on all (and there are a lot) of your positives. Keep repeating and redirecting until habit kicks in and your mental outlook slowly changes.

Your self-esteem will improve, your self-confidence reassert itself, your belief in your own worth blossom. Now you are ready to tackle the demands of franchise searching with higher energy and without that baggage you've been hauling around for too, too long.

The right business is out there for you! Just keep looking!

If you know somebody going through this, now, then hand them this article. DB

Continued from page 19 “There’s An App For That”

In a world full of gadgets, gizmos and, above all, “apps” can there really be an app for everything? Global company MyNet Universe certainly think so. Making money using a tried and tested business model? There’s an app for that...

MyNet Universe is the exclusive home of MyShoppingGenie, a revolutionary new Web App. You may be wondering why this innovative Internet solution is named the Genie - after the mythical character that Aladdin released from his lamp. Like Aladdin's genie, MyShoppingGenie has an almost magical ability to grant our wishes for saving money, making money and for helping people make a positive impact on our world.

MyShoppingGenie enables the average person to take advantage of major trends in our economy. The first is the fact that saving money has become very popular. Some people are even saying that saving money is the new way to make money.

MyShoppingGenie is right at the center of this because when you use the Genie, you can save money on the things you need. How does this work? Whenever you look to buy something online using any major search engine like Google or Yahoo, the Genie appears; and just like magic, it cuts through the clutter to find you the best deals on virtually anything you are looking for.

Why is the Genie so important? The Internet has the appearance of offering unlimited choices, but nothing is further from the truth. The major search engines charge online retailers' or sellers' fees to appear near the top of their search results. This means that much of what you see when searching for something you need is not necessarily the best deal for you but, rather, what benefits the major search engine. The Genie is different because it puts you, the customer, first by enabling you to better manage your search results so that you can find a better buy.

Secondly, a you can also promote your company or brand and make money online with MyShoppingGenie because

An End Has A Start

How one man’s nightmare has become the beginning of his dream.

I remember the feeling of utter despair when I found out that I was to lose my job through redundancy. 9 years I had been there and one fine evening I was called in and bam! Everything in my life changed! I had known nothing else throughout my working life than sales & marketing in the window industry and I have to say that I just didn’t know what to do. A wife, 2 kids, a mortgage and no job. I got a nice pay out though and sat on this until I knew what I was going to do. I know that whether you find out at the last minute or if you know that redundancy is planned, it still doesn’t change the feeling of complete demoralisation you feel.

I landed another job relatively quickly, but again in a short space of time I was on the heap. Along came another job and again I found myself signing on! During all of this third and final time I realised that I would not put myself through this again and decided that I needed to do something for myself

The Turning PointI went through the normal crisis issues. Feeling sorry for myself for quite some considerable time was the worst thing, but the turning point for me was pretty much when my kids looked at me and told me - the way that only kids can do - ‘’Daddy, why are you always snapping and moody?’’.

That was it, I pulled myself together and decided that I needed to do something completely different to that of my previous career. A fresh start, with new goals and ambitions. But what about having to start again and rebuild at my age? What about the kids and supporting them? Could I be self-employed? Do I know enough about business to make it work? Lots of questions spun through my head that kept telling me that I should do the easy thing and get another job! But no, I had always followed my instincts and they had never let me down, so I went for it. and so UK Trust A Service was born! I wanted a local advertising medium that would cherry pick all that was good about the competition, with a mix and style all of its own. Something web based but linked to a local supplement in colour and of high quality. I evolved the product over a period of 12 months and re-launched it 3 times until I thought I had got it right. Throughout this time I was broke, I ate beans on toast for my dinner and my tea, and I lost nearly 3 stone, putting myself through hell. But, I knew what I was doing was the right thing,

and was prepared to go through the turmoil to get a product that I believed in into the market.

Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 4November 2009 came along and I was still working hard when I walked in on a prospect in Bromsgrove. It turned out that this guy was a local businessman, and he completely tore my product apart! Now you would think that this would have just killed my enthusiasm but I thought to myself, “not a chance!”. I went away with the ideas I was given and changed things again, just to go back and show him the product again. Rather shocked, he had no choice but to advertise with me, which he did. All 3 businesses he owned went into the publication and onto the website. After many months of more hard work, a conversation with the same man led me to a decision to take my product to the franchise market.

After all the heartache, sweat and tears, financial struggle and constant change, my product and business had been recognised for what I always thought it could be. We now have franchisees and managers in

various territories with the UK Trust A Service business going from strength to strength. DPP Publishing Ltd was formed as the holding company and the Franchise Cloud was conceived, along with this newspaper, The Franchise Tabloid.

It Doesn’t Have To Be This WayMy experiences have made me a stronger person and have given me the chance to work with some great guys. They have also taught me the value of friendships, patience, perseverance and the ability to turn criticism into construction. I would say if I had known about franchising like I do now, I would have gone down that route because of the support and guidance I would have received. The fact the business model has been proven, all the hard work done, along with a ready-made company of support would have made my life and dream of self-employment a lot less stressful. Also, I would not have had to eat beans on toast all the time! As it has turned out, Franchising UK Trust A Service has given me the opportunity to give people in my position of redundancy or just looking for a life change, the opportunity to start a ready-made business without the trials I went through.

If I can do it that way, you can do it the Franchise way. Never give up on your dream, however hard and far away it seems to be.

Peter Begley, Sales & Marketing Director – DPP Publishing Ltd

people with a sunnier outlook. The optimists, however, are likely to be happier, healthier, and more successful. Seligman argues that, for most people, it's worth learning to be optimistic. It's good for you.

Obviously, you can't stay in business if you don't have a grasp on reality, and especially on how things are changing. Yet, it is the nature of the entrepreneurs not to accept reality without a bit of a fight. We are, after all, in business to change the world, not simply to accept things as they are. Our success depends on a good helping of presumptuousness. We are remaking the world to our liking. But we will never succeed unless we are convinced - and unless we appear convinced - that what we are doing will succeed.

Everyone has moments of insecurity. Confidence is a quality that comes and goes, but it is also a discipline that can be learned. And if you can succeed in learning confidence, you will not simply be happier and healthier, but wealthier besides. PP

when someone uses the free Genie that you gave them and shops or buys something from one of the select top online retailers, these companies then share their Affiliate commissions with you; and you make money.

MyNet Universe is making MyShoppingGenie available to give the consumer unlimited choices in the marketplace. The Genie breaks the limitations of shopping at one store or the confines of an online buying club. The Genie breaks the limitations created by the major search engines controlling what we see in our search results, thus giving us more choices. Finally, the Genie can be your online business that can create the wealth you need for the life you want!

The Internet: What’s In A

(Domain) Name?

"Domain names are much more than just a technical shortcut. A

short, memorable domain name can make the difference between

creating a successful Web presence and getting lost in cyberspace”

Domain names add credibility to your small business.

Having a unique domain name makes your company look professional. If you publish your site through an ISP or a free Web hosting site, you'll end up with a URL such as www.yourisp.com/-yourbusiness. This generic address does not inspire confidence in a customer like a www.unique.com domain name does. And since many people do not yet fully trust the Internet and e-commerce, you will want to do what you can to prove that your small business deserves their money. If you are not willing to pay the money to get hold of an

appropriate domain name, why would consumers think you would put any effort into creating valuable products or services?

A domain name says you are forward-thinking.

Having a unique domain name indicates you are part of the Digital Revolution, and it implies that you are up-to-date on emerging technologies. Whether this is true or not, having your own unique domain name might just put you ahead of your competitors.

A domain name adds mobility to your Internet presence. The control that leasing or buying your domain name gives you, lets you take that name with you if you transfer Web hosts or switch to your own in-house server. If you do not have full control of your domain name, you will have to take a new URL, which will destroy the branding that you built up with your first address.

The right domain name can attract walk-in business.

If you decide to lease or buy a domain name that matches the concept of your business (instead of your exact business name), you might draw Web surfers in search of that topic. For instance, a hardware store that registered Hammers.com might get visitors looking

for hammers on the Internet. Also, although search engine results are hard to predict, Hammers.com could show up more frequently in search results when someone searches for information about hammers (B&Q took control of DIY.com and have prospered very well from it).

A domain name builds your brand.More than anything else, a domain name can increase awareness of your brand. If your domain name matches your company name, it reinforces your brand, making it easier for customers to remember and return. It will also be easier to win business via word of mouth because customers will remember your name and pass it along to friends. Businesses have also been known to change their business operating name to match an available domain - this is probably a more regular occurrence than you think!

How do I get a good domain name?Securing “the one” can be difficult these days as so many domains are taken, but a good agent will be able to help you all the registration and services you need.

What is domain leasing?Domain Leasing is just like leasing property. When you lease a domain name

you can develop it and use it exclusively for your own business project. You can keep the exclusive rights to use the domain until you wish to end the lease contract. Domain leasing allows you to use a premium domain name at a competitive monthly price, rather than paying an often very high one off price to gain exclusive rights to the domain.

What are the key benefits of leasing a domain name?

There are many benefits to leasing a domain name over purchasing a domain name outright:

• Premium recogniseable domain names are better in terms of marketing

• Premium domains provide strong brand identities

• Established domain names provide better returns in search engine results

• Premium domain names can strengthen an existing brand

• Leasing domain names is cheaper than buying them, and more manageable in terms of budgeting

• Leasing drastically reduces the start up cost of any new or 'side step' business venture

The bottom line is that a good domain name can go a long way toward generating traffic to your Web site.

We sell and lease Internet domains, as well as procuring and providing services to domains on your behalf. Simple.

Goyugi have a range of premium industry specific domains that are available to lease or to buy. At Goyugi we believe that leasing a domain is the best way forward for small businesses, new projects or businesses that want to draw short term contracts on their domain ownership. However, many businesses choose to buy a domain outright and we can help you do that too!
