Letter from Jane
Dear Parents,
I hope you had a good half term holiday. Both the 11+ and 13+ assessments went well
with lots of lovely new pupils hoping to join Dunhurst in September and our Block 2s
returning after their mini residential at Bedales full of enthusiasm for the next step in
their education. It is great to have them back and to see the lessons underway.
On Friday 4 March at 8.15am there is ‘drop off’ coffee in the dining room where I will
give feedback on the parents’ survey which took place at the end of last term, and detail
key ideas from the pupils’ survey. My thanks again to all who took part and I look forward
to sharing this with you.
I am afraid I am unavailable to see parents at the Block 1 parent/teacher meetings next
week due to Governors’ meetings. If you would like to see me to discuss any matters
concerning your child’s progress, do contact Frances Harris [email protected] and
she will be able to arrange a time convenient for you.
There has been a huge amount in the news recently regarding young people and mental
health. Nick Robinson, our Pastoral Deputy Head, is giving a Childtalk on Wellbeing and
Youth Mental Health on Monday 29 Feb at 4.30-5.30pm and this will be repeated on
Saturday 5 March at 10.00 – 11.00am. He will provide an insightful view of recent
research and practice and also detail what we are doing at Dunhurst to support the
wellbeing of all our Dunhurstians through our pastoral team.
I have to say that I am looking forward to the Bingo tonight! The ‘Fodders’ Bar will be in
full swing with Patrick’s selection of fine ales and other beverages. Dave Greenman, Head
of Bedales Catering, will be our Bingo caller and I hear that he has a rather special outfit
to wear for this auspicious role. I hope to see many of you there, good luck in advance!
Warmest wishes

From the couch…….
The boarders are back from half term all rested and ready for action. Can we please
remind you to ensure that all items of new clothing are labelled clearly, this is to help
prevent the un-named pile building up.
The resident boarders are very excited to welcome the Group boarders who are coming
in for a taster night - “don’t forget your PJ’s, towel and toothbrush”.
There will be lots of fun activities for all.
ODW Joke of the week.

GROUPS SCIENCE FAIR
FRIDAY 4TH MARCH 4.30-5.20
Dear Groups Parents,
Hopefully by now your children will have told you that they are part of Dunhurst’s
inaugural Science Fair, with over 30 stalls. The aim is very much for them to design/find
an experiment and then demonstrate it to the Blocks children and parents instead of
the normal Jaw session next week. Each group of children will have a stall or table and
will need to show what they have as well as explain the science behind it. We have
already completed some work in school and each child now knows who they are
working with and which experiment they are doing.
SAFETY
Some of the experiments are a little dangerous and we would supervise these carefully
during the Science Fair. Please supervise your children until you are confident that what
they are doing is safe.
Yours,
Olly

BIKEABILITY IS BACK!
Vincent Licence, Bikeability Instructor, will be at Dunhurst on
Saturday 5th March from 10:45 to 12:45 to provide cycle skills to
any Groups children who have yet to attain their Level 1 certificate. Level 1 is suitable for those children who can already
independently ride and control a bike reasonably well and takes
place in a traffic free environment (The Dunannie Car Park is
cordoned off). By completing Level 1 your child will learn to
demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a
trip and undertake activities safely in a motor traffic free
environment.
The instruction lasts 90 minutes and the cost of the Level 1 course is £10 per pupil – your child will
receive a Level 1 certificate and a badge. Up to ten pupils can be instructed in this session.
In addition, Vincent is offering a “learn to ride a bike course” for £10 and this is open to pupils,
parents, family members and staff alike! If anyone is interested this instruction would take place on the
same Saturday afternoon. Please e-mail Jonathan Peers ([email protected]) and specify if you are
interested in your child taking the Level 1 course, or if any individual would like to learn to ride a
bike.

GROUP 2 - FOSSIL PLASTER CASTS In Group 2 we have spent a lot of time learning about the creation of fossils over long periods of time. We
explored different kinds of fossils, including cast fossils. We had a go at making some of these ourselves using
plasticine and plaster of Paris. Can you recognise what types of fossils we have made?

GROUP 2 - DRAGONS IN EUROPE WORKSHOP On Monday morning Group 2 were treated to a New Year visitor. We were introduced to the Chinese language
and were given a chance to practice saying hello, thank you and goodbye, whilst also learning that the direct
translation for teacher in Chinese is 'old master'. We had the opportunity to practice some Chinese writing and
were amazed to find out that in order to read a newspaper in China you would need to know up to 3,000
different symbols!
The second half of our session allowed us to learn about how the Chinese new years were given animal names
and why the Chinese celebrate new year in the way that they do. We then played some fun games, using basic
Chinese language, firstly within the class and then moving on to use the interactive whiteboard. An enjoyable
morning was had by all and a great way to enrich our China topic this term.

MATCH REPORTS
U11A & B Hockey v Westbourne House
The girls knew this was going to be a hard match against tough opposition. The B team started defensively with
Helena , Mia and Imogen making vital tackles in our defending circle. The defenders were committed in the circle
and showed grit and determination to clear the ball away. Millie H was strong in midfield, getting the ball from
defence to attack. Leela and Izzy provided width on the wings and ran with the ball when given the opportunity.
Nell and Rosie made the most of their shooting chances with Nell scoring Dunhurst’s only goal. Well done to
Helena for being named the bees knees- well deserved as Helena made some great goal line clearances.
Unfortunately the game ended 10-1 to Westbourne but as usual the girls did not let their heads drop.
The A team started strongly with Tory passing the ball well in midfield to Sage and Rebekah upfront.
Unfortunately the Westbourne defence were strong and cleared the ball well out of the circle. Ellen, Zoe and
Beatrice made some strong tackles in midfield. Giselle and Millie K made vital interceptions in the defensive D but
Westbourne’s attackers were strong the ball and showed pin point accuracy in from of goal. The game ended 9-0
to Westbourne House and like the B team, the girls did not give up and gave 100%.

U13 Hockey v Frensham Heights
On Wednesday the U13 Hockey Team went to Frensham Heights for a match. We started strong by getting the
ball off the opposition straight away but sadly they got the ball down the pitch and scored. Even though we were
quite sad, we upped our games with amazing attacking skills from Mille, Issy, Daisy and Charlotte with fabulous
defending from Minna, Anne, Miranda and Holly. Despite this Frensham scored. In the second half we swapped
players on and off and got the ball down to our goal but failed to tap it in. After ten minutes of playing we were
taking a long corner and sadly it flew instead of rolled – let’s just say. The end score was 2 – 0 to Frensham
Heights. Well done to Daisy for getting the ‘Bees Knees’ and thank you Debbie and Verity for taking us.

MATCH REPORTS
U11A Boys Hockey v Highfield
This was a physical game on grass between two well matched teams. Highfield attacked strongly straight from the
push back, however, Dunhurst fought back strongly and forced Highfield to defend against an onslaught of sniping
shots. This end to end game could have gone to either team, but Dunhurst prevailed and won 3-1.
MVP Joe C for his constant tenacity in defence. Really well done all of you.
David
U12 A + B Hockey v Bohunt
On Wednesday the 24th the under 12 A/B team went to Bohunt to play hockey. They started off with a goal and
played an attacking game. They were the stronger team but we didn’t give up. Bohunt scored another 2 goals and
we shot in an own goal.
By half time it was 5-1 to them. We switched positions and really upped our game. We had a few good tackles
and the opposition managed to score 2 more goals. We made a few breakthroughs but Bohunt tackled us for the
ball. The end score was 6-1 to Bohunt. Thank you to Liv for taking us and well done to Maggie for getting the
bees knees.

U13A Hockey-West Hill Park Tournament
The under 13A travelled to Fareham knowing that this tournament would be a real challenge, as they were drawn
to play some of the best teams in the region. We started against Dumpton from Dorset and the boys followed
the game play well, with lots of attacking opportunities and a number of short corners earned. We just couldn’t
get the ball in the goal and Dumpton broke away to score with a couple of minutes to go. Our second game was
against Westbourne House and again the first 5mins saw a very even game with both sides having chances.
Ultimately Westbourne House took theirs and won 2-0. Our next game was against the hosts, West Hill Park,
who were a superb team, led by a talented midfielder. We struggled to retain our focus and were soundly beaten.
The last game of the day was against West Hill Park B for 7th place in the tournament and pleasingly the boy
regrouped and played some superb hockey and we won the game 1-0 in extra time.
It was great for the boys to compete in so well in such a high level tournament and I am sure they learnt lots
from the experience. Thank you to Kevin for his valuable input and well done to Will R, Jamie, Hugo, Sam, Arthur
R, Ed, Joe and Will H.
