Picture-Hint FLasHcard overviewThese unique and colorful picture-hint flash cards are designed to supplement the Times-to-Remember system (See it, Sing it, Do it!). Simply print, cut, and fold. Now students - yes, all students! – are on their way toward mastering the basic tables 0-9. Multiplication flashcards have has never been so effective…and so much fun!

Vertical vs. Horizontal Flash CardsThe vertical presentation of the equations is significant. Why? Because students must be able to quickly recall the answer regardless of presentation. Since the picture rhymes are learned horizontally, the vertical presentation offers next-step learning. As well, the vertical presentation helps the student to quickly transition into higher-level math since facts will often be presented this way.

Please note that the Times to Remember™ Home and Classroom Resource book (found in major on-line bookstores) includes other types of flashcards and activities to meet the needs of all students (differentiated classroom learning). For example, the horizontal, corner-hint flashcards found in the Resource book are designed for students to trace and color. The hint can be hidden or exposed depending on student readiness, offering differential classroom learning.

Just the answer vs. the complete equationStudies show that showing just the answer on the back of a flashcard offers little in the way of remembering the equation. Having the compete number sentence (equation and answer) repeated often helps with fluency. Certainly 6x8=48 is meaningful, whereby 48 by itself is not. For this reason the entire number sentence is repeated in the flashcard answer. Be sure to encourage the students to say aloud the full number sentence when answering the flashcard.

Note: To improve multiplication fluency the complete equation (not just the answer) is repeated in all Times to Remember™ activities including the picture rhymes and the sing-along songs.

instructionsBefore using, students must be familiar with all 21 Times-To-Remember™ picture rhymes. These can be found in the 30-page Picture-Rhymes download available at www.TheTimesTable.com. As well, they are found in Times to Remember™ books in hard cover, soft cover, Kindle and Itunes (Apple format), all of which are found in major on-line bookstores.

In order to improve multiplication fluency, students should review the rhymes using the Times to Remember™ Sing-Along Songs. Play it at home, or play it in the car. The Sing-Along Songs are available in both MP3 or CD format at CD Baby, Amazon, Itunes, Google Play, Spotify and more.

What do the Card Symbols Mean?All 21 picture rhymes begin with the smaller factor. (This way students learn two equations with only one rhyme!) For example, 6x8 went out for a date, 6x8 = 48. When you see the flashcard 8x6, you will see 6 embellished as a man with spiky hair. This will prompt the student to recall, not only the corresponding picture rhyme (and answer), but the fact that the rhyme begins with the smaller factor (six).

The 0, 1, 2, and 5 tables do not use picture rhymes, thus the symbols used for these flash cards are designed to prompt student recall of specific memorization strategies. These are as follows:

You will find flashcards which show zero as a “hero” indicating that 0 wins (0 is always the answer).

One is shown as a “loser” (sorry…I don’t like this one either.) … so, now we know that the other factor is always the winner (the answer).

Whenever you see the number two as a multiplier, you will see a picture of the double-scoop ice cream cone to remind the student to double the other factor. Two times eight is 2 scoops of 8 … yes, 16!

Whenever you see a five, the hand reminds you of a fun strategy to find the answer quickly. For five times an even number, just divide the even number in half and add a zero for the answer. 8x5? Half of 8 is 4. Add 0, and get 40! After preparing all the flash cards, students may want to circle all the even numbers that are multiplied by five to help recall this strategy. What about the odd numbers? The odd numbers multiplied by five always end in a five. For example, 9x5 (just 5 more than 8x5) is 45.

Easy Print, Cut & Fold!Print the cards on card stock or quality paper for best results. Then simply cut and fold. You may want to staple, tape or glue sides together to make a durable card, or you may leave the fold open to allow for the card to stand upright.

For efficiency, prepare the entire set of cards so they are ready to use when needed, however, it is not necessary to include cards the child/student already knows.
