Introduction

When.we.were.first.asked.to.give.a.presentation.on.McGraw-Hill.Financial,.we.weren’t.sure.how.to.approach.the.daunting.task..Thankfully,.we.had.the.full.support.of.Human.Resources.who.assured.us.that.our.ideas.were.worth.presenting..After.some.brainstorming,.we.decided.that.our.topic.would.be.“The.Future.of.MHF.”.The.problem,.however,.was.that.we.were.unsure.of.how.to.approach.a.topic.as.broad.as.this..It.also.didn’t.help.that.all.of.our.departments.and.majors.

are.different—some.of.us.work.in.Indices,.while.others.work.in.Design.or.Editorials,.and.our.majors.range.from.Communications.to.Economics.to.Psychology..Fortunately,.there.is.one.thing.we.all.have.in.common:.we.are.all.part.of.the.same.generation,.the.Millennia’s.

Every.generation.has.a.unique.personality;.the.Millennia’s.are.generally.seen.as.confident,.self-expressive,.and.open.to.change..They’re.more.diverse.ethnically.and.racially.and.less.religiously.affiliated.than.older.generations..But.perhaps.the.most.defining.trait.of.this.generation.is.their.affinity.to.technology—and.the.Millennia’s.seem.to.agree...In.fact,.according.to.a.survey.conducted.by.Pew.Research.Group,.the.top.characteristic.Millennia’s.cite,.as.making.them.distinct.is.their.use.of.technology,.which.they.seem.to.need.even.when.they.sleep...In.another.survey.from.the.same.research.group,.83.percent.of.Millennia’s.sleep.with.their.cell.phones.on.or.by.their.beds..But.the.crux.of.the.Millennias’.technological.adeptness.resides.

in.the.way.they’ve.fused.their.social.lives.into.technology.

Seventy-five.percent.of.them.have.a.profile.on.a.social.networking.site.and.one-in-five.have.posted.a.video.of.themselves.online..Technology.isn’t.just.a.means.of.connecting.to.the.world.anymore.for.them,.it’s.now.an.essential.way.of.life..And.with.that,.Millennia’s.have.a.new.set.of.expectations.where.they.can.get.breaking.news.immediately;.their.online.profile.pages.can.be.individualized;.and.they’re.always.connected.to.the.world,.whether.it.is.from.their.home.computer,.or.their.smartphone,.or.their.iPad.

Millennia’s.represent.the.generation.of.people.currently.at.the.cusp.of.engulfing.the.workforce.en.masse..We.believe.that.McGraw-Hill.Financial,.having.just.started,.can.successfully.reach.out.to.the.evolving.marketplace.via.the.use.of.what.we.like.to.think.of.as.“new.tools”.for.a.“new.generation,”.which.are.social.media.for.the.purpose.of.connecting.and.sharing,.a.stronger.web.presence.through.a.reworked.website.and.mobile.applications,.and.a.strategic.partnership..to.help.MHF.navigate.successfully.through..the.online.world.
