Timothy Trow Palmer, 75, a 26 year resident of Annapolis, died July 29th. Tim was born March 22, 1938 in Evanston, Illinois to his late parents, C.F. and Josephine Palmer. He

graduated from Shattuck School in Faribault, MN, continuing his education at Carlton College in Northfield, MN and graduating in 1960 with a degree in Chemistry/Zoology. In 1964, he received a Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota, followed by a PhD in Zoology in 1974 from the University of Minnesota. In 1981, he received a second Master’s Degree in Safety from the University of Southern California. A Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, he served from 1964 until his retirement in 1984. Tim’s assignments included Ethiopia and Panama, where he taught medicine in the tropics. He also worked in the Navy as a parasitologist with the goal of finding a cure for malaria. Appleseed Imagine If You Will - April 19th, 1775

Your town is being occupied by the most feared military on the planet. Your freedoms are almost gone. You have no voice in things. You are being taxed to the breaking

point and now, literally RIGHT now, they’re coming to take your guns and ammunition away. So what do you do? You could chose the status quo and hope for the best or you could fight. If you pick up a rifle, you are a traitor for life. The odds are so stacked against you that it’s laughable. If you get killed, your family literally starves. There is no insurance, no welfare, they’re on their own. If you get hurt, there is no medical care. You’ll likely die a horrible death due to gangrene and your family will still starve. You don’t have a bayonet, but your adversaries DO, and they’re fond of using it. You’re a simple farmer. The one thing you DO know is how to shoot a rifle. The choice is, literally, win or die. Liberty or Death.

I can tell you that the decision to fight was made 18,000 individual times on April 19th, 1775. Those 18,000 men knew the choice they were making and knew the risks. They loved their families and kids as much as we love our kids and families today. Yet they STILL made the choice to show up and fight. Ask yourself — given those facts, what would YOU chose to do? What would a Rifleman do? More importantly, what do you think your neighbors would chose to do? Answer honestly. Want to hear MORE about what these extraordinary farmers did that day? Want to learn the skills of the American Rifleman? Get yourself to an Appleseed before all the Fall classes are sold out! Bring a neighbor too! It’s better to have a Rifleman as a neighbor, than not.

registering as a Democrat. Actually, a DINO (Democrat In Name Only). This will allow gun-owners to have an impact in the Democratic primaries to remove those who voted against our 2A rights and send them packing to look for new employment in 2014! only work if YOU join us! Click the link or go to this webpage and make the change TODAY! Go to online voter registration and make the change. It’s quick and easy! http://www.elections.state.md.us/ And YES, you can still vote for whomever you wish in the General Elections!

nominations from the floor. This is truly a great way to get involved and have your input as to how the club is run. I know I sound like a broken record but we are looking for people to take over some positions that are opening up around the club. None of these require a 24/7 commitment. It only takes a couple of hours a month. We are really burning out the existing volunteers. On every application I see that everyone has marked that they are willing to volunteer in some form. It is time for the 90% that have not gotten involved to get involved. We cannot continue to rely on the few that have continued to take the time to keep the club moving forward. It is your turn! Please feel free to contact me at the email address listed here in the SCORE and let me know what you can do.

Enjoy and be safe,

NOTE: Those newly accepted Provisional members will be invited by email to attend the next walk-through as part of the membership acceptance notice. Previously accepted Provisional members who have not been able to attend are invited to do so at any monthly session. Prior registration/notice of intention to attend is not required but cannot hurt. Remember, the 6 month minimum provisional membership clock doesn’t start until you attend the Safety Orientation and Range Walk-through. You could be a Provisional member for a looooong time if you don’t attend. Worse yet, until you attend you will not be issued a Provisional membership card or a gate access card. So the sooner the better since (hint, hint) the sooner you attend, the sooner you can get your membership and gate access cards and work toward attaining full member status. Only then can you shoot all by your lonesome and bring guests! Attendees should bring with them eye and ear protection and a check for the annual dues (prorated for the months remaining in the calendar year), $50 annual capital assessment, and $25 for the gate access card deposit. Description:

All AAF&G members in good standing,

It’s that time of year again, time to see who will be the next AAF&G club champion. The Ernie Clarke Memorial Shoot is the annual club championship for the Anne Arundel Fish & Game organization. The shoot consists of events in the various disciplines that AAF&G offers. Past champions have been steady throughout the events, not necessarily winning all the events. Participants are encouraged to enter to see how they compare with other members. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 10:00am – 3:00pm (a sanctioned weekend). Registration begins at 9:00am and closes at 2:00pm. Eye and ear protection is mandatory for shooters and guests. Targets, equipment, and ammunition will be provided for shooters. We hope to see you there, and maybe you will be the next club champion!

PROVISIONAL MEMBERS – GUN SCHOOL

We held our most recent Gun School class for Provisional Members on Sunday, August 4th and

had a total of 18 people in attendance. Many thanks again to Meg Clarke for administering the class with me. I also want to thank Rebecca Newton, Bob Yurwitz and Brooks Wuerdemann for coming out to teach. They all did a great job, especially since they didn’t know exactly what they would be teaching until they arrived (my apologies to them). Each added their own unique perspective on shooting and they helped the attendees with the questions that inevitably came up during both the lecture portion and the gun handling portion of class. The next scheduled Gun School is set for Sunday, November 10th at noon. If you are a provisional member and wish to register for the Gun School class in November, please send me an e-mail at [email protected] . I will send you an e-mail confirmation that you are registered for the class. Note that you must be a provisional member to attend, i.e., you must have had your interview, safety walkthrough, and have been issued your provisional membership card. We can accommodate up to 20 people in the Gun School class. Although it is unlikely that the class will fill up, if it does, a waiting list will be created. Those on the waiting list will be placed into class on a first come, first served basis if there are any cancellations. Therefore, it is very important if you are confirmed to attend the Gun School class on November 10th and cannot attend, that you notify me by e-mail so that I can place someone from the waiting list into the November class. Otherwise, those on the waiting list will be given priority placement in the next Gun School class, scheduled for February 2014. The exact date is TBD.

Action Pistol Work Party

The effort to reduce the

mud in the three Action Pistol Bays is showing positive results. The recent rains have not caused a huge amount of mud and matches have been able to be held as planned. There was another work party at the Action Pistol range late last month. The drains at the base of the berm were cleared again. Additionally, the French drain in front of Bay 1 was dug up; the gravel was sifted and put back in place. It looked somewhat like the gold miners of olden days. The club is relies on volunteers and here is a list of folks who helped. As special thanks to Jacque Blundell for the delicious cookout and Skip Miller for the supplies and his constant stewardship of the range.

IDPA Action PistolMATCH REPORT

July was another active month in spite of the rainy Saturdays. We had two three-gun (pistol caliber rifle,

shotgun and pistol) matches, two IDPA type matches (one steel match because of the rain and one a blended pistol and shotgun), and one USPSA match. Attendance continues to be strong. We also held one of our monthly Observation and Safety Classes for shooters who are new to AAF&G’s Action Pistol range. This class is a requirement for individuals who have not achieved an advanced classification in IDPA or USPSA. The class consists of observation of an IDPA match, an orientation on AAF&G Action Pistol Range safety requirements, and the basics of the IDPA shooting sport. Participants must demonstrate that they can safely draw their handgun from a holster and negotiate a typical IDPA course of fire.

LADY’S IDPA MATCH ON SEPTEMBER 21ST

We have scheduled another ladies only IDPA match for Saturday afternoon on September 21st. There

will be instruction and practice on safety, drawing a handgun from holster, firing on multiple targets, shooting while moving and using cover as well as an IDPA type match. Basic familiarity with your handgun is a prerequisite: loading, aiming, operation and unloading. The purpose of this match is to provide women with information that is important to safe gun handling and skill development to safely participate in the exciting sport of action pistol shooting. This clinic is for any female club member, family member, or friend of a club member or AAF&G IDPA participant, who has a desire to learn. All skill levels can benefit from the instruction, but is primarily focused on the beginner and novice shooter. All instructors/Safety Officers are experienced female shooters who actively participate in the shooting sport. The clinic runs from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, September 21st. Send an email to [email protected] to register for the clinic or request more information. The cost is $10 for AAFG club members or family members. The cost will be $20 for all others. Ammunition and equipment are not included.

AAF&G WELCOMES EIGHT NEW PROVISIONAL MEMBERS

Eight new provisional member applications were proposed to and approved for acceptance as members

by the Board and the General Membership at the August 2013 Board and General Membership meetings. David AULD, Michael DAVIS, Chuck DURAN, David PERKINS, David RYKER, Guy SCHELHOUSE, Gil STANDIFER, and James STANSBURY. If you see them on the range after their initial orientation and safety walkthrough, remember that they’ll be looking to you for guidance in following the range safety rules, range protocol, range safety customs, range safety ethics, etc., and they cannot shoot without the presence of a full member on that range. So please help them out if you can. Be a mentor.

MORE PROVISIONAL MEMBERS ACCEPTED AS FULL MEMBERS

The August Board and General Membership meetings saw two more provisional members gain full

membership. Mark STRICKENBURG and John TOOMEY are the most recent provisional members to gain full membership. They completed all the requirements of provisional membership – a minimum of 6 months of participation at AAF&G with demonstrated safe shooting in at least 3 different shooting disciplines – Handgun, Rifle, and Shotgun, attendance and participation in AAF&G Gun School, (AKA the AAFG Quadrathalon) and the endorsement of 3 full members in good standing. Their sponsors did a great job in mentoring through the membership process! Congratulations Mark and John! We hope you have many safe and successful years shooting with us.

Rimfire ActionRimfire Action administrators discussed it, and beginning with the August match, miss penalties will be reduced from 5 seconds to 3 seconds. Given the times shooters are turning in, a 5 second miss penalty seems to be a bit excessive. Procedural penalties will remain at 10 seconds. We have now had over 70 different shooters come out to our Rimfire Action Shoots and we have created an e-mail list of Rimfire Action shooters in order to provide info and updates to the group. This way, we can get information out much more quickly and frequently than just once a month in the SCORE if the need arises. We have already sent out the initial test e-mail. If you did not get the test e-mail and want to be on the list, please be sure you LEGIBLY put your e-mail address on the score sheet at the next match. Or send me an e-mail from the e-mail address you want on the list to [email protected].

SHOOT SAFE…HAVE FUN

Guy Bellanca

For the second straight month, Mother

Nature’s bark was worse than her bite. Once again we

faced thunderstorms for our July match and again they never materialized.

We watched storm cloud after cloud pass us by and occasionally give us some relief from the hot sun but only a few drops fell the entire match. This time we were able to set up and run an entire match. Top shooters for the July match were as follows: 1st was Guy Bellanca, who shot the match in 69.28 seconds, 2nd was Bob Yurwitz with a 78.83, and 3rd was Chris Kahler with a time of 83.24. The full match results are posted on the website. Go to the Disciplines tab and then follow the Rimfire Action Shoots link. Information and results for the match held on August 25th will be in next month’s SCORE. Several items to note: We cancelled the Rimfire Action cookout in August due to a lack of interest. Also, the September Rimfire Action Match has been moved to the 5th Sunday of the month, September 29th. Finally, the

BOAT FOR SALE: Lower priceCurrently I am spending more time fishing from my kayak than from my boat so I am putting it up for sale. It is a 1985 Bayliner Capri 1600 bowrider with an 85hp. 3-cylinder Chrysler Force engine. It is fully outfitted for fishing with rod holders, live bait holder, fishfinder and drift sock. It also has extras like a bilge pump, battery tender, voltage regulator, AM/FM radio, extra fuel tanks, life preservers, spare stainless steel prop and nice bimini made of sunbrella fabric and a cover. I also have the manuals and various small spare parts like fuel pump and carb parts.

The trailer is a 2009 EZ Loader trailer custom fitted to the boat by Tri States Marine in Deale. It has all good tires, LED lights, nylon slides on the bunks and an electric winch that can pull a 26-foot boat. The boat and trailer were thoroughly washed down every time I took it out. As I said, she runs but not as fast as she used to and I don’t want to spend any time or money for a tune up or whatever she needs. I am looking for $1200 or I will consider a gun trade. The boat is at my house in Davidsonville if anyone wants to come out for a look-see.

Revolver for SaleLast chance for a face-to-face transfer at MSP before the Oct. 1 regulations kick in. This is a rare S&W Model 16 in .32 H&R Magnum. It will also shoot .32 Long and Short. It is a tack driver that has been tuned for accuracy. It is all steel, no MIM parts in it and no internal lock. It has a fiber optic front sight mounted but I have the original front sight also. $800 takes it home, plus the MSP $10 fee of course. I will transfer on the 8th day to club members who I know, or for those who have a Not Disapproved Form 77R in the last year.

Contact me at [email protected] or 410-798-8444 if you want more information or would like other pictures for both of these items.

Shooter Qualification Card Program for MD Hunters

Don’t forget that there are two DNR sanctioned Shooter Qualification events held once again at AAF&G on two Fridays in September. Sept. 6th, 2013 from 1000hrs to1500hrs and also on Sept. 20th, 2013, from 1000hrs to 1500hrs.

To become certified, shooters must meet the following qualifications: • Shotgun: 3 out of 5 shots in a 9-inch circle at 40 yards

• Muzzleloader: 2 out of 3 shots in a 9-inch circle at 40 yards • Bow: 3 out of 5 in vitals of a 3D deer and unmarked distances under 30 yards. (Bow qualifications will be conducted on

noted firearms qualification days but on the AAF&G Archery Range.) The Eccles Rifle Range will have three shooting positions available for members on both days for casual non-qualification card shooting activities, but please understand that the range will be called hot/cold as necessary to accommodate those participating in the shooter qualification sessions. For those members who cannot make one of these dates, a complete listing of shooter qualification dates and locations statewide (by county) are shown at the DNR website.

Filling the Basic Range Bag

Over time, experienced shooters assemble a collection of sundry items that are used in support of their various shooting disciplines. These items invariably go into a device known as “The Range Bag.” While range bags have

evolved over the years to include those that carry handguns and ammunition, I am only going to address the range bag that carries support gear for plinking and target shooting.

✓ The first thing that should be in the range bag is your targets. These may be as formal as NRA approved targets or as simple as white paper plates. If you are shooting with a scope, small pasters work well and take little space.

✓ Next you will need something to attach the targets to the cardboard backer on the target frame. Some

people use tape others use staple guns. I have found that a staple gun is much quicker and also works in damp weather. An Arrow T-50 Heavy Duty stapler will fill this bill nicely. It can be found at almost any hardware store. Oh,

don’t forget to bring staples also.

✓Chamber empty flags, while not always required are always a good idea. Midway sells them in bunch of five or so.

✓A small screwdriver handle and bit set is a must. I suggest the Chapman brand as they almost invented the gun bit screwdriver. These may be obtained from Midway or Brownells. Screws are always loosening up at the range and trying to tighten them up with a pocketknife just doesn’t cut it. While not a range bag item, I always keep a .30 caliber breakdown rifle cleaning rod in the car in case you have to knock stuck bullets out of the barrel.

✓A small notebook and pen is helpful if you want to record notes or scores and a small first aid kit is handy for the times that the staples get the best of you.

✓In summer, add some water bottles, in winter, add some hand or body warmers. Insect repellent and sunscreen are also items that should live in your range bag.

✓Last but not least, pick up a couple of snack bars, the kind wrapped in foil that last a long time. A small snack can make your shooting day more enjoyable without filling you up.

You may note, I did not include items like bench rests, spotting scopes, and ammunition. These items are too large to fit in a standard range bag and are usually carried separately. Hopefully, this little note will better prepare you for a day at the range.

Shoot safely and shoot often.

Cowboy ACtion Howdy Pardners,

An 80 degree day in August? Not a bad day to have a Cowboy shoot! We had some stages about the real bounty

hunters of the Old West. There was a little moaning and groaning about

the shooting sequences (that’s Bob’s fault), but it wasn’t too

bad. No clean matches this month. Cervaza came the

closest with just one miss. Durango Dude had the top

time…again. We retired to that old waterin’ hole, Red, Hot and

Blue, for some clinkin’ and drinkin’ and good chow. Good news! JD Cane’s wife, Carol, is home from the hospital and recovering nicely under his good care. He thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Hope to see you on September 21st.

Millcreek Mona and Riverboat BobPS: Remember timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

The Junior Rifle Program starts at 9:30 am - 12:30 p.m. every Sunday for the current team members through September 8th. Starting September 15th we’ll have our morning session for the team from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The

afternoon session will be from 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm. The first and only Orientation Class will be held on September 8th, 2013 and I’ll be taking students from the wait list. If you would just like information about our program, please email me at [email protected]. Queen Anne’s County 4H Marksmanship Club will host the upcoming Maryland State/Open International 3P Smallbore and International Air Rifle Championship on Sunday, September 15, 2013. We have four team members entered into the match: Courtney Cowger, Chloe Manuncia, Emma-Rae Pyle and David Pitt. NRA Qualification Medals:

August Shotgun!

Fall is just around the corner, which means hunting season is approaching. Members who typically don’t

shoot trap with us are welcome to join us to improve their bird hunting skills. During the days that the trap fields are not open, you are welcome to practice from the pole trap thrower. Prior to using the thrower you must be checked out by one of the shotgun volunteers and get the sticker for your club badge. You must only shoot during center fire hours and abide by the posted rules. On Aug. 16th we had a shotgun volunteers meeting directly after our Friday shoot. During the meeting we discussed a few issues, the first being safety. It appears that most of us have been following the safety rules very well, and our volunteers are quick to address a safety issue when it occurs. We are going to place hunter-orange hunting vests in the trailer for the Saturday volunteers to wear while working that day. Obviously this makes the volunteers on duty recognizable. We also discussed possibilities for a club shotgun competition, which should start in the fall. There will be more on the competition at a later date. Anyone who has ideas please contact Bob Yurwitz or myself. Bob and his wife Mona will be heading up the competition. Trap machine 3 is now back in service, and we owe John Michelli many words of THANKS for his hard work in getting this machine up and running again. Also thanks to

the folks who assisted John with the heavy lifting. With trap 3 back on line we can start back with our doubles day, and it can be online if enough volunteers are on hand to run two trap fields. We will also alternate the use of trap houses 2 and 3 each week. Shotgun Field Hours are 10:00 till 1:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Pole-trap hours are during Center Fire hours only when the trap field is closed. To shoot from the pole-trap while trap fields are open, you must get approval from the volunteer on-duty.

TRAP SHOOTERS TIP OF THE MONTH:

Know your DOMINANT EYE. If you shoot with both eyes open, which is the best way to shoot shotgun,

it allows more light to enter your vision and brain, and increases you depth of field. If you sight the gun with your non-dominant eye it can make it almost impossible to consistently break clays. By knowing your DE it makes it easy to fix the problem. Have one of the folks who shoot on a regular basis help you to determine your DE and how to fix the issue, without going to shooting with your opposite side. In other words, if you shoot right handed you don’t need to shoot left handed just because your left eye is dominant. Please remember that we need everyone to pitch in and help with whatever needs to be done, from cleaning the trailer to loading the trap houses. If we have two older folks on duty that day give them a hand with loading the trap house. Thanks and be safe,

The third annual AAF&G MID-ATLANTIC REVOLVER 1800 REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP was held on August 17th. The demanding all-revolver tournament resulted in some very tight competition between

some very skilled revolver shooters. A total of 17 shooters competed in the 1800 Revolver Championship and 16 in the NRA Distinguished Revolver 30 round match. Two of the DR shooters were already Distinguished Revolver Shooters, which left 14 competitors vying for a six point award. A total of 30 points are required to be designated a Distinguished Revolver Shooter by the NRA. AWAY MATCHES

Four members of the AAF&G High Power Rifle Team, Andy McK., Brian S., John K., and Bill P. competed at the National CMP High Power Rifle Games Matches at Camp Perry, OH beginning with the July 31st Vintage Sniper Rifle match followed by the M1 Carbine match, the Springfield/Vintage Foreign Military Rifle matches, the John C.Garand match, and finishing up the week by competing for the first time in the NRA-Springfield M1A match. The weather at Camp Perry this year was simply stunning! Instead of blazing sun, heat, humidity, high winds, and rain (often all in one day in past years), the temperature was mostly in the 70s with low humidity. The locals said that it was the first time in 20 years that the temperature didn’t break 80 degrees. There was only one bit of rain Friday mid-afternoon and a very heavy fog delaying the start of the next day’s John C. Garand match by an hour. Other than that, with light breezes blowing in off Lake Erie, we had no excuses for any lackluster performances. And yes, there were some scores during the week that lacked a certain amount of luster. But then there were some medals won that made up for it.

See you on the Range!

As many of you know, AAF&G purchased an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) this past year. It is mounted in the clubhouse above the filing cabinets next to the door to the garage. Since then, there have been six CPR/AED training sessions held in the clubhouse with a total of 44 students. I do not have another training session scheduled yet due to uncertainties in my work schedule for the next couple months, but there will certainly be more sessions held if there is continued interest. If anyone is interested in attending, please email me at [email protected] so I can get a sense as to how many need to be scheduled in the coming months. The sessions last approximately one to one and a half hours and cover adult CPR and use of an AED.
