Top: Gaiety Hollow, a preservation partner garden of the Garden Conservancy, was the home garden of Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver, the first all-female landscape architecture firm in the Pacific Northwest. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bottom: Our Open Days program includes Digging Deeper educational events at select gardens. “Growing Beautiful Food” with Matthew Benson of Stonegate Farm in Balmville, NY, highlighted how to combine edibles and aesthetics, and the principles of organic micro-farming.

PRESERVATION OF OUTSTANDING AMERICAN GARDENSBy partnering with visionary gardeners, designers, and community leaders, we assist outstanding private gardens on the path to becoming sustainable public gardens and cultural destinations. The Garden Conservancy has helped to save more than 75 significant gardens around the country—many of which are now historic landmarks and thriving community resources. We are working with a growing number of partners to save even more gardens for future generations.

OPEN DAYS PROGRAMOur Open Days Program is America’s only national garden visiting program. Through Open Days, more than one million visitors have explored gardens not usually open to the public. These gardens include some of the nation’s most distinctive examples of plant collections, design, and horticultural practice. A national network of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, generous garden hosts, and thousands of visitors makes this sharing and learning experience possible each year.

EDUCATIONOur ongoing program of lectures and symposia feature prominent experts and offer horticul-turists, landscape professionals, and amateur gardeners alike a source of contemporary ideas relevant to gardening, sustainability, design, and preservation.

GARDEN-STUDY TOURSMembers of the Society of Fellows travel with us across the country and beyond, exploring extraordinary gardens and historic landscapes. In recognition of their annual support, we invite Fellows to several special garden-study tours each year. The tours showcase remarkable gardens characteristic of the region, as well as imported styles, too. All along the way, Fellows meet renowned horticulturists, designers, and historians. They explore local architecture, private art collections, and other cultural highlights; enjoy first-class hotels and gracious hosting in private homes; and experience behind-the-scenes tours of public museums, arboretums, and botanical gardens. Our tours have taken Fellows to dozens of destinations around the country and the world.

Fellows tour the Gold Coast of Long Island, June 2015.

RECENT FELLOWS TOURS INCLUDEAtlanta, GA A tour filled with southern hospitality, renowned public institutions, private Buckhead gardens designed by Atlanta’s leading professionals, and charming city gardens in other historic neighborhoods.

Gold Coast of Long Island, NYFellows explored this beautiful and horticulturally rich area of the north shore of Long Island, which features great estate gardens of the last century and outstanding gardens of our own era.

Bar Harbor and Mt. Desert Island, ME The island’s unique topography and climate made this a particularly fascinating area to explore. Fellows were treated to an insider’s look at the fabulous gardens of the renowned summer retreat.

South AfricaThis international tour introduced Fellows to the extraordinary botanical diversity of Johannesburg and Greater Cape Town. South Africa’s unique garden tradition— which blends the best of African, European, and Asian influences — was on display.Fellows are invited to special lectures and events such

as this reception in Lake Forest, Illinois, celebrating the legacy of designer Rosemary Verey.

We are planning an exciting slate of tours for 2016. Check in with us for details!

French garden preservationist Didier Wirth led Fellows on a tour of his gardens at Château de Brécy. We also arranged presentations by Didier Wirth to Fellows in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
