President’s Message

BY JENNY MOORMAN Email: [email protected]

Usually over the summer, our board takes a break from meeting. This summer, however, we met in August to choose topics for our Annual Seminar in March 2020 and to begin planning the large International German Genealogy Partnership (IGGP) conference we will host in July 2021. We will need some volunteers for the Annual Seminar committee. Please email me at [email protected] if you can help. For the 2021 IGGP conference, we will need a LOT of volunteers. Please email us at [email protected] if you can help. Also over the summer, many of us attended the Open House tour of the recently re-opened Cincinnati History Library and Archives. See our Events Calendar for upcoming tours that we have set up for our members. In the last Gazette, we listed an open position of Program Director. Having someone in this role helps us achieve one of our missions which is to teach genealogy. Long-time member and previous board member Jean Nathan stepped up and filled that role. If you have ideas for programs, please let Jean know at [email protected]. Welcome back, Jean, and thank you! Since the sacramental records of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Archives have gone online on Findmypast, we have held two related programs. In July, Jeff Herbert presented Researching Roman Catholic Church Records at the Kolping Center. In September, Julie Ross lectured on Introduction to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Sacramental Records on Findmypast. Both events were very popular. Jeff’s program is recorded and available in the free area of our website on the Videos webpage. Julie may speak again on her topic. If she does, we’ll be sure to give notice via our usual media outlets. In August, the writing workshop Honoring Your Past with a Gift to the Future: A Writing Workshop with Shelley Bishop was a huge hit. Among other things, Shelley demonstrated how to use MyCanvas to create a family history book. The Tram Tours at Spring Grove in September were another very popular event. Registration was required and both tours filled up in less than 24 hours! This summer yielded two new books to aid your genealogical research.

1. The 8th edition of A Guide to Genealogical Resources in Cincinnati and Hamilton County by Kenny Burck and Connie Stunkel Christman. This book was expanded and reformatted, and now has hyperlinks (in the PDF version). Thanks also to many of our board members who contributed to this edition. 2. Index of Hamilton County, Ohio Reported Court Records 1880-1884 by Jeff Herbert. Jeff continues to produce indexes of historical records.

To purchase these helpful books, visit the “Shop & Support” page on our website, or you may access them at the Main Cincinnati library or perhaps at your local branch library. Another mission of ours is to preserve historical records. Research & Preservation Director, Jim Dempsey, continues to work with county repositories to digitize their records. Two awards were recently presented. Mark Steinke received a Certificate of Appreciation on September 19 at our board meeting at Perkins in North College Hill. Mark is serving as our Corresponding Secretary. We are grateful for his work! The Award of Merit is our second-highest award, given only to those who have made an ongoing major contribution to the work of our society.

Jane Edgar received the Award of Merit on September 28 at the Symmes Library in Symmes Township, Ohio. Jane has worked as the editor of this publication, The Gazette, for nearly 10 years! We appreciate her continued efforts. Join us on Saturday, October 5, at the free Family History Fair! This event is co-sponsored by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and HCGS. Internationally known speaker, Sunny Morton, will teach us how to Reconstruct Your Ancestors’ Neighborhood: 5 Powerful Sources for Local History, with powerful and creative examples for using city directories, urban and suburban maps, local histories, newspapers, business records and images. Sunny will also teach us how to How to Reconstruct Your Ancestors’ Amazing Stories by combining clues from your family’s knowledge, documents from genealogy websites, good historical research and Googling to fill in the gaps. Also that day, from 12 to 2

PM, approximately 20 experts will be available to answer your questions for free on many topics from DNA, to African American research, to Technology, to lineage societies and more. Our lineage societies are ready to host their annual Heritage Luncheon on October 12. Several committees have spent many hours evaluating applications and approving those who qualified. We appreciate their hard work and of course the massive amount of work the applicants did in assembling their research and completing their application(s). Come celebrate the new lineage society members as they receive their pins! Our speaker will be interpreter Joyce Browning, as "Mary Cunningham, the Body Snatcher's wife." It is a funny and sad tale of how the earliest doctors became educated. Registration is required by October 2. On Saturday, October 19, join other genealogists for the annual Genealogy Lock-in at the Main Library in Cincinnati. Kathy Reed, SWOHDNA chairperson, will teach 3 mini-programs on DNA. Free refreshments are provided. Registration is required and space is limited. See our Events Calendar in this issue for more details on these future events. Without our members, we could not accomplish our goals to promote genealogy, educate genealogists, and preserve historical records. In late October, our annual membership renewals will be mailed out for 2020. We hope you will renew your membership. Or if you are not yet a member, please consider joining. Besides providing financial support, you would have access to members-only benefits such as our award-winning Tracer journal, certain databases and videos, and reduced prices for some of our programs. I’d love to hear from you if you have any suggestions or feedback for our board to consider. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Our next board meeting will be Thursday, October 17, 6:30-8 PM at Perkins in North College Hill. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. It’s a great way to learn about what new plans we are considering and goals we are working towards. We are considering new locations for these meetings, perhaps something more centrally located in the city. If you have any location suggestions, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

The Chapter currently has three lineage groups, First Families, Settlers & Builders, and Century Families. All three are closely modeled after the lineage programs of the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS). OGS also has a Civil War Families of Ohio society and many other county chapters have a Civil War group. Our Chapter Lineage Society would like to start a Civil War Families of Hamilton County, Ohio group. You would have to prove that your ancestor lived in Hamilton County, OH and served in the Civil War, or served in a Hamilton County unit. This could be an ancestor grandparent or, for this lineage society only, the person could be a sibling of the ancestor grandparent. The only thing we need is a volunteer to run the program. You would work with the Lineage Society committee that meets about 4 or 5 times a year, and we would honor the applicants at our annual Lineage Society Luncheon that takes place every October. On the job training is available so no experience is necessary. This is a great position for someone who is particularly interested in the Civil War. Contact Kenny Burck for more information at [email protected] or 513-260-0238.

On September 7, Nancy Chouteau did a presentation on the use of a variety of social media tools for genealogy. Nancy also provided attendees with a list of links to some of the valuable online resources she has used. The list has been posted on the HCGS website: https://hcgsohio.org/cpage.php?pt=196 You can view the video at this link: https://vimeo.com/361203412 or on the Hamilton County Genealogical Society YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEHdY_xOeww.

After an extremely successful 2019 conference in Sacramento, California, the next International German Genealogy Conference (IGGC) in 2021 in Cincinnati seems far away. However, the Hamilton County Genealogical Society is the sponsoring organization, and is already hard at work on the planning and logistics for the event. It will take place at the Sharonville Convention Center 20 minutes north of Cincinnati, from 16 to 18 July 2021. Kenny Burck and Jeff Herbert are the co-chairs for the conference and are busy recruiting other chairs. A theme is being developed and a flyer with more details will be distributed soon. Conference registration is expected to open on 1 October 2020. Deb Cyprych and Jean Nathan have volunteered to serve as Program co-chairs and are working on the process of selecting presentations. The call for proposals will open on 1 January 2020 and will continue through 1 March 2020. The selection of the lectures and speakers will be finalized by July 2020. Anticipated tracks:

Basic German genealogy

Beyond church and civil records

History and culture

Location, location, location

Making connections

Online and onsite research

Overcoming language differences

Strategies specific to German research.

If you are interested in helping on a committee or have experience in a particular area and would like to volunteer, please send an email to [email protected] with your name, availability, and area of interest. Some of the volunteer committees include:

As we get closer to the actual date, we will need many volunteers onsite to help with hospitality, coordination with out-of-town visitors, room monitors, and facilitators at the actual conference. Discounted hotel reservations will open for guests one year in advance of the conference in July 2020. Three conference hotels have already been selected with contracts negotiated for rooms. The three hotels are Hyatt, Marriott, and Liv-INN Suites. All are adjacent or across the street from the Sharonville Convention Center. Look for more information in early 2020. Meanwhile, mark your calendars for a fabulous conference experience in Cincinnati!
