The machine’s movable shaping head design allows manufacturing of a variety of parts with minimal setup times. With the variable height of the cutting head, it is also possible to cut multiple gears in one setup. The machine concept is based on a modular platform system, with component groups that are also used for the Liebherr hobbing and grinding machines. This permits cost effective manufacturing of individual components. The machine concept is equally suitable for dry and wet cutting. This is ensured with a newly designed machine bed. SGA method With the patented SGA cutting method it is possible to use a shaping cutter without a tip relief angle as a cost ef- fective cutting tool. The clearance angle, required for the cutting action, is realized by a special cutter spindle relief cam. This can also help to prevent interference between cutter head and workpiece. This application shows the machining of a crankshaft sprocket gear using a cost ef- fective cutter, constant profile cutter. Wafer tools Tool setups are a significant part of the overall production costs. This cost portion can be reduced with the use of wafer cutters with their constant diameter. In this applica- tion 3 gears are simultaneously cut, ensuring the highest possible production rates. The NC Shaping Head The movable cutter head slide, in combination with the NC controlled helical guide, allows the universal and flexible manufacturing of internal and external spur and helical gears. The electronically controlled helical guide eliminates the time intensive change of cutter spindle guides. Additionally, the high positioning accuracy of the direct cutter spindle rotation permits the correction of the workpiece helix angle by just a few thousandth of a degree. The Control and Drive TechnologyThe PC based control, in combination with highly dynam-ic digital drives, guaranty excellent gear quality. The con-sistent use of standard field busses and highly integrated control modules allow a minimum of wiring.

SoftwareThe operator and programming menu screens, specifical-ly designed for gear shaping, allow direct input of drawing data into the control. Individual program packages with specially tailored menus describe internal gears, external gears, and non circular gears as well as segment gears or the turning of an indicator band.
