The Geisel Difference
Pictured clockwise: Thomas L. Geisel The late Vernon G. GeiselThomas L. Geisel II The late Jack H. Geisel Sr
Funeral service has been the traditional occupation in my family for many years – almost a century now. But more than an occupation or career, a dedicated funeral director chooses a certain lifestyle that revolves around the needs of his or her community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Such a lifestyle was fi rst chosen by my great grandfather, Vernon Geisel, way back in 1919, when he opened our fi rst funeral service operation in Pleasantville (Bedford County) out of his garage. From those humble beginnings during the depression era, to our growth and expansion into the more modern facilities we now occupy in Chambersburg, Everett and Bedford, we’ve always simply modeled our approach around the Golden Rule. Care for families like you would hope to be cared for.
Our Chambersburg funeral home is now one of six in our family, and it is the largest in terms of the number of families we annually serve. Each year hundreds of families look to us in their hour of need, and because we understand that you only get one chance to say goodbye, we are honored to be here to help you.
“A Family Serving Families” ~ That’s been our little motto for as long as I can remember. I’m told my grandfather Jack, or “Pap Geisel” came up with it. Being raised around funeral homes, I remember my dad working under Mr. John O. Park at our former location in downtown Chambersburg in the early 80’s. He then bought the business in 1983, and built our current funeral home on Falling Spring Road in 1993. I entered the family business in 1999, and my cousin, Adam, joined us in 2009. So we really are a family serving families. We added our on-site crematory in 2005, and we continue to grow each year. Now with fi ve licensed funeral directors, a dedicated pre-planning specialist, and the most spacious facility in Franklin County, we are determined to continue to earn the reputation of being the area’s fi nest Family-owned Funeral Home. Rest assured; you’re in the right place, and thank you for your confi dence in Geisel Funeral Homes.
Meet Our StaffEach of the staff members at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center is committed to providing your family with the fi nest in personal end-of-life care. Payment PolicyUpon making any arrangements with the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, each family receives a statement of goods and services, which refl ects our prices for services and merchandise in an itemized fashion. This statement also serves as a legal and binding contract. All fi nancial arrangements must be completed prior to fi nal disposition (burial or cremation) of the deceased. We understand that planning a funeral can be diffi cult. But paying for it shouldn’t be. That’s why we accept the following 8 forms of payment for your convenience:
1. Cash. 2. Check - Checks are subject to electronic funds verifi cation. Third party checks are not acceptable. 3. Credit Card: VISA, MasterCard, or Discover. 4. Direct payment from Decedent’s bank account up to $10,000. (in accordance w/20 Pa. Cons. Stat. Sect 3101) 5. Assignable Life insurance Policy. Once the assignability and benefi ciary have been
verifi ed by the insurance company, the funeral home is paid directly from the insurance company out of the policy’s proceeds. Policies under two years old are generally contestable, and may not be acceptable. There is no additional administrative fee for processing assigned insurance policies, and the normal processing time for a policy is 4 to 6 weeks. 6. Pre-Paid Funeral Contract through our fi rm or another comparable Funeral Home. (at the discretion of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home) 7. Federated Direct Debit: Requirements include down payment of at least 50% of Total Services/Merchandise and 100% Cash Advances. 12-month term 8. WHAT TO KNOW WHEN CHOOSING BURIALFor thousands of years, burial has been a traditional means of caring for the physical remains of a loved one. Historical precedence is one thing, but for you, burial may simply be the tradition of your family. When burial is chosen, your loved one may be:
Interred in the ground in a regulated cemetery, or if local legislation allows, on private propertyEntombed in a crypt within a mausoleumBuried at sea
IT’S A DEEPLY PERSONAL DECISIONEven if it isn’t what your family has commonly done over the years, there are many personal reasons you may have to choose burial over cremation. These could include:
Religious or geographical preferencesAn aversion to the cremation practice of using flame to reduce the remains to ashYou wish to erect a monument in honor of your loved oneYou wish to have a natural location where you can visit, graced with trees and open spaces
DECISIONS AND COSTSIf you think that burial is the right choice for your family, there are some important decisions you must make.
For example:
Do you wish the body to be embalmed? What kind of casket and burial vault would you prefer? Which cemetery would you select, and do they have space available? What type of monument, headstone or grave marker would you like? What words would you like to put on the headstone, marker, or monument?
Each of these decisions involve related costs which may impact your final decision.
Selection of the casket and protective burial vault required by the cemetery The purchase of a cemetery plot, if your family doesn’t already have the rights to oneThe headstone or grave marker, and any placement fees charged by the cemetery
You should also know that each cemetery is governed by their own board of directors therefore prices and guidelines differ from one cemetery to the next.
We know this is a lot to absorb – that’s why we make ourselves available to you and your family night or day. It is our responsibility to guide you in caring for your loved one.

CREMATION - The Geisel DifferenceWhile most funeral homes do offer cremation services, we own and operate an on-site crematorium, enabling us to take full responsibility for the entire process. And we’ve been doing it for years. As with any major spending decision, it’s always wise to weigh one’s options. Such is also true when selecting a funeral or cremation provider to make a valid “apples to apples” comparison.
Direct Cremation Price Range: $3,495 - $15,995 If you want to arrange a direct cremation, you can use an alternative container. Alternative containers encase the body and can be made of materials like fiberboard or composition materials (with or without an outside covering). The containers we provide are:Fiera Blue Cloth-Covered cardboard and fiberboard .........................................................................................$1,500 Dawson Tan Cloth-Covered cardboard and fiberboard .........................................................................................$975 Basic ID simulated woodgrain container ..................................................................................................................$495 A plain cardboard box can be used at no additional charge. Wood or veneer Cremation Caskets may also be selected, if desired.
Direct Cremation w/ Container provided by Client Family ..............................................................$3,495Does not include coroner’s cremation authorization/E-cedent/Cash Advances. Container must be rigid, combustible, enable safe handling by crematory staff and be compatible with crematory equipment.
Basic Direct Cremation ..........................................................................................................................$3,750

From Start to Finish…….From the first contact to request our services, on through the transfer of your loved one into our care,
the arrangement conference with your family, the identification viewing time, and cremation processes,
we are serving you as licensed funeral directors and cremation professionals. As a member firm of CANA
(Cremation Association of North America), we hold ourselves to higher standards of practice than just
anyone who might decide to open a crematory. We pride ourselves in adhering to strict and respectful
crematory policies and procedures. Each individual when brought into our care is clearly labeled, personal
items are inventoried, and the decedent is placed in an alternative container for identification. We feel that
dignified, individual care is paramount and this step helps us facilitate that.
Identification…..Sometimes you can never be too careful. With our kind of business, this is especially true. Not all cremation
providers take the extra step of requiring a positive identification at the funeral home. We do. You see, we
feel it is our professional responsibility to ensure without question that the person entrusted to our care
is indeed the person to be cremated. This relieves everyone who is involved of the possibility of mix-ups.
After your arrangement conference with one of our directors, immediate family members will have the
opportunity to spend a few precious moments with their loved one in one of our family viewing rooms. You
should be afforded this time in a private, peaceful setting… a chance to say hello one more time…. before you
say farewell for now.
Hello, Neighbor…….We are a local, family-owned, small business. In serving Chambersburg and its surrounding areas for decades,
we’ve learned the importance of face-to-face contact with our client families. This really helps us understand
their needs. We believe in accountability for the quality of our service, and educating our client families about
all their options. We raise our own families in this community too, so we want to ensure the utmost peace of
mind for the neighbors we serve.
“We really felt special during my Dad’s service at Geisel’s. My uncle died the same day as my Dad. His family did not choose Geisel for their funeral arrangements. This afforded us the opportunity to observe two different funeral homes back-to-back. You can be proud of the dignity and professionalism with which you conducted yourselves in carrying out your responsibilities. First class!!”
