President’s Report – October 2018

Hi All,

The National Rally in Canberra was fantastic. I spent all Saturday talking to people about their Morrys

and after hearing their stories I could write a book on them. There was a car, the Green Ant, that was

wrapped in vinyl and had been bingled that morning on the way to the display, there was the ‘Steam

Punk’ car which had been pimped with chains, gauges, copper pipes and treadle sewing machine parts.

There was the car that had been restored by Wenona High School girls in Sydney where Les Whales

from the MMCC of NSW had spent two afternoons a week for two years helping them. He said it was

fantastic to see the girls get into the work. Some even came along after they had left the school! This

car was owned by the newest member of the Canberra Region MMCC who were our hosts. He had

been in the club 9 months and was already on the committee! Look out all those newbies to our club.

The happy hour that evening was at my hotel and I was having more than one glass (I know - shocking

hey?) until someone mentioned I might have to give a speech that night which sobered me right up! I

met some members of our club I wasn’t even aware of and had a lovely dinner with them on Saturday

night – they even won one of the few trophies. I hope to see more of Brian and Geraldine. The Sunday

run was great as we had a guided tour of the embassies in Canberra and a Segway tour which we all

enjoyed enormously. I’m sure the various reports from the rally will give more details.

Next meeting, we are in for a treat as we have our very own school restoration project coming our way.

There will be five teachers and 6 students attending from Roxburgh College, including three girls from

the girls-only class. They will present a power point presentation on the Morris Minor, including video of

student discussion about the vehicle. This is a great opportunity for us to engage with the next generation

of Morry owners and to pass on some of our skills. I’m hoping a lot of people will volunteer a bit of time

but we will have a better idea of what is involved at the meeting.

Please bring your cars to the next meeting for the students to see.

Braidy Davies,

Prez.

Captain’s Report – October 2018

What a great turn-out from this Club at the National Rally in Canberra between 21-23 September. Thirty-

three members attended in 13 Morries and five moderns and a good time was had by all. It was great

that Barb and Ken could attend courtesy of a lift by the Carrs and that the Smiths could make Canberra

courtesy of a lift by Bruce Kerr, following a complete brake failure of their Morrie at Glenrowan.

The next event which most of you should know about from my personal invitation via e-mail, is on Sunday

21st October. This event promises to be an enjoyable one with a run from Diamond Creek to the Dixon’s

Creek Café Bar & Bistro via the Sugarloaf Dam for a pit-stop and photo opportunity on the dam wall on

the way ( more details in this Generator).

At this stage not many have responded so your advice re your likely attendance with menu choice would

be greatly appreciated as soon as you can, either to my e-mail address or mob 0400273328. This early

advice will enable the venue to serve our lunches promptly.

Hope to see you at the next Club Meeting on Thursday 11th October.

Cheers to all

Michael Dobson

Run Report –– September 2018

CANBERRA NATIONAL RALLY

Wednesday 19 September.

Sixteen members met up at the Wallan BP Service Station from 9.30am for a 10am departure in six

Morris Minors and two moderns, with members comprising Lyn Waites & Wayne Cunningham, Michael

Page 10: The Generator Generator 2018.pdf · Punk’ car which had been pimped with chains, gauges, copper pipes and treadle sewing machine parts. There was the car that had been restored

& Veronica Dobson, Mark & Sue Parritt, Malcolm & Margaret Baker, Percy & Cheryl Scicluna, Graham

& Leslie Dines, Rob & Trish Smith and Katie & Tony Hamilton.

The convoy then proceeded up the highway for a brief pit-stop at the Euroa Hwy Services before stopping

for lunch at the Glenrowan Hwy Services where assessments were made by Percy and others of

problems experienced in three Morries. Prior to arriving at Glenrowan, Bruce Kerr in modern, towing

caravan, had caught up with the group, unaware that his services would soon be required in the

transportation of two members and their luggage following the total loss of brakes of their beloved Morrie.

That Morrie had initially developed a single wheel cylinder leak which then resulted in total brake loss

much to the concern of all members present but particularly to Rob and Trish Smith whose trip was fast

turning into a disaster. Luckily Bruce generously offered to transport Rob and their luggage for the rest

of the trip with Trish being decanted into the Dobson’s stretch limo MM Holden Berlina. Fortunately, the

other car problems were minor (no pun intended). Katie Hamilton’s MM had a generator problem which

was quickly rectified at a Wangaratta auto electrician and a noise in Mark Parritt’s MM’s clutch area did

not develop into a problem after all. These problems were discussed at great length over dinner that night

at the Boomerang Motel in Lavington.

Thursday 20 September.

After a hearty continental breakfast, the group, minus the Smiths, Dobsons and Bruce Kerr, hit the road

for Canberra around 9am, stopping at Gundagai for lunch and arriving at Queanbeyan by 4pm.

The Smiths were able to get a late motel check-out to enable Rob to be transported by Bruce to the

Wodonga brake specialist, to check whether the replacement brake parts had been received as an

overnight delivery. They discovered late in the morning that the parts were unlikely to arrive before the

following Monday. On hearing this bad news via phone from Rob, the Dobsons departed for Canberra

around 1150 am, leaving Rob, Trish and Bruce to follow later after re-hitching the caravan.

Other members of the Club not mentioned above travelled to Canberra separately, that day or Friday,

comprising Braidy Davies & Peter Walker, Richard McKellar, Jeff, Gladys & Rhonda Brumhead, Stewart

Carr, Ross & Ann Carr, Brian & Geraldine Glass, Ken & Barbara Urquhart, Kelvin & Jo Hawksworth and

Kate Hutson.

At the end of this tiring day members made their own dining arrangements.

Friday 21 September.

After registration at the Sutton Road Hillclimb Centre from 10:30am members were free to go their own

way for the day, many ending up at Floriade, before attending the first official National Rally dinner at the

Kangaroos Rugby League Club from 6pm.

Mike Dobson – 28 Sep 2018.

Saturday 22 September. Saturday the 22nd of September, the day chosen by the Morris Minor car clubs in Australia to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the birth of the Morris Minor. The Canberra Region Morris Minor Club did a fantastic job in organising a great celebratory event. All those who attended the gathering at the Queanbeyan Park for the show and shine had a relaxed and enjoyable day.

Page 11: The Generator Generator 2018.pdf · Punk’ car which had been pimped with chains, gauges, copper pipes and treadle sewing machine parts. There was the car that had been restored

The Victorian Morris Minor owners were asked to arrive for the set-up between 9.00 and 9.15am. Joyful and I turned up as requested only to find that most people and their cars were already set up, proving that you can’t keep a Morris Minor enthusiast down. The weather was fine and kind of like an English day, not too hot or windy, but warm enough to encourage topless driving for those owning convertibles. All body styles were well represented and there were original, restored, every-day and custom variants. It was a very social day. Owners and the public mingled and admired the cars, many familiar stories were heard, such as, "I learned to drive in one of those, or, my Nan bought a Morris Minor as her first car” etc. Morris Minors make people smile, they are a fun looking and happy car. All states were represented, Brian Parkes made the epic trip from Perth making him the furthest travelled and not for the first time. Several trophies were awarded on the day, as follows…

Entrants' choice: Steve Klobucar 1957 Ute. Canberra Region MMC.

Mayor's choice: Dennis and Suzanne Allen's 1959 convertible. Toowoomba and Downs Morris Group.

Mayoress choice: David and Joyce Pfeifer 1958 van. Albury-Wodonga MMC.

Reg Tilly Memorial Trophy: Brian and Geraldine Glass' 1957 convertible. MMCC of Vic.

Paul Kelly Best Customised Vehicle Trophy: Bruce Perry 1960 ute. Canberra Region MMC.

Morris Down Under Trophy: Bruce Perry, 1960 ute. Canberra Region MMC.

President Braidy hastily organised a happy-hour by the pool at her motel, for interested club members prior to the Rally Dinner in the evening. All diners were involved in a general knowledge and Morris Minor quiz The cutting of the 70th Anniversary cake and some dancing marked the end of a fun day. I know that I speak for every participant that a great time was had by all. Kate Hutson – 27 Sep 2018.

Sunday 23 September – Embassies & Segways Tour.

The young at heart left the Hill Climb Centre in search of adventure on “A Different Look at Canberra

Tour”. We were led into Canberra by our Canberra Friends “Chief Storyteller” Geoff Cannock and his

wife Stephanie. Upon arrival at the New Zealand embassy, Geoff explained a little about the goings on

at all of the embassies. Little did we know! From there we drove, at a snail’s pace, even for a Morrie,

past 20 or so Embassies which showcased the architecture from each country. Some were fortresses

barricading against invasion whilst others were modern and welcoming.

The National Library was the last stop before lunch with more fun stories about what really happens in

Canberra. We saw a marvelous exhibition “Beauty Rich and Rare” which was a light show about the

natural beauty of Australia through the eyes of Sir Joseph Banks.

The real adventure then took place on the Segway’s. Oh what fun was had by all of our group which

comprised Peter Lenne and Jan from Albury, Braidy Davies and Pete along with Katie and Tony

Hamilton. After a quick lesson we took off around the lake, passed Old Parliament house, Floriade and

The Australians of the Year Walk. “El Presidente” Braidy, had fun on the lawns flying backwards and

forwards dodging chairs and tables…managing to photo bomb as many times as possible.

All those participating agreed that Segwaying was a highlight of the Rally!!

Katie Hamilton – 23 Sep 2018

Sunday 23rd September – Canberra Country Run

It was a perfect day for a run in the country - bright sunshine, clear sky and no rain forecast. Fifteen

Morris Minors set off from the Hill Climb Centre at 9.30am and made their way along Sutton Road to the

Federal Highway and Tulip Top Gardens. The gardens comprise ten acres of magnificent displays of

spring flowers. Blossoming trees line pathways down to flowerbeds and a watercourse. Many tulip and

daffodil beds were surrounded by zinnias and pansies. See photos below:

After viewing the gardens, we retired to the cafeteria for morning tea – delicious freshly baked scones

with cream and jam.

The second part of the run took us to the historic town of Bungendore close to Lake George. Lunch was

available at the Lake George Hotel or the Bungendore bakery. A visit to the Wood Works Gallery followed,

where we viewed wonderful examples of cabinet making including a rocking chair and a stunning table.

We also visited the leather shop, crammed with gorgeous handbags and other leather goods. On our

walk around the town we passed beautiful historic churches and stumbled across a wonderful antique

shop.

The return drive to Queanbeyan took us through farmland, where cattle grazed on rich pasture.

Mark & Sue Parritt – 28 Sep 2018.

Tuesday 25th, Wednesday 26th & Thursday 27th September – The Run Home.

Our run home was via Cooma, Bombala, Cann River and Lakes Entrance.

We set off at 9am for Cooma, arriving in time for morning tea in a cosy café. A wander around the shops

proved productive for several members! Next stop was Bombala, our destination for the night. Following

lunch at a local café, we located our accommodation but were unable to gain entry despite repeated

knocking. Fortunately, a cleaner appeared as we were investigating a rear door and invited us in. The

owners being absent and in possession of the reservation book, she was unable to advise which rooms

were ours. She tried to contact one of the owners – driving from Adaminaby – but he was out of range,

so we sat in the dining room for an hour. The cleaner left, so Mark phoned the owner and learnt he would

be twenty minutes; turned out to be another hour! However, the rooms were beautifully decorated and

furnished in nineteenth-century style, which compensated for the long wait. In the evening we crossed

the road to the RSL, where we enjoyed a hearty dinner.

Next morning, we took off for Lakes Entrance, stopping en route at Cann River for fuel and luscious

morning tea at the bakery. On arrival at Lakes Entrance, we sought out a lunch venue and discovered

the Central Hotel. After lunch Ann, Ross, Barbara and Ken departed for Eagle Point – the Carrs’ home.

For the rest, accommodation was spacious log cabins at Lazy Acres Cabin Park. After happy hour, we

returned to the hotel for more refreshments.

An early start the following morning saw us picking up Barbara and Ken at Bairnsdale and then heading

for home via – guess what – another morning tea at Yarragon.

Participants: Ann and Ross Carr, Barbara and Ken Urquhart, Cheryl and Percy Scicluna, Lyn Waites and

Wayne Cunningham, Mark and Sue Parritt (2 Morry vans, 1 Woody, 1 saloon, 1 ute)

Mark & Sue Parritt – 28 Sep 2018.

Me and Me Morry, Millie Annie

As mentioned by Mike Dobson in his Captain’s Report and Run Report above little Millie spat the

dummy at Glenrowan (just like one of our favourite sons some time back). Due to her advancing years

she could go no further and just blew-up; well not completely but blew a brake cylinder in the left front

wheel. Fortunately, we had reached and entered the Service Centre and were able to inspect the

damage in safety. Several convoy members swung swiftly into action and rendered assistance in

determining the problem and took steps to put things right. It was finally decided that the damage was

serious enough to render Millie immobile due to the complete loss of braking action. Once more the

team rose to the occasion and within minutes a tow truck had been ordered to take Millie into Wodonga

and replacement parts sourced from far-off Goulburn to be delivered to the Brake hospital in Wodonga.

Fellow club members then transferred the contents of Millie into their vehicles. Following the tow trucks

departure, with Millie proudly displaying her skirts high up on the tray, Trish and I were conveyed to the

Albury digs where most of the gang were staying for the night.

Due to the tardiness of Australia Post the parts were going to take almost a week to arrive at the Brake

hospital. The decision was therefore made to leave Millie tucked-up in hospital whilst Trish and I went

on to Canberra with our club comrades.

Following completion of the National Rally we journeyed home via Wodonga where, after an overnight

stay, I collected Millie with her new shiny brakes and returned home without further trouble. And so

ended the saga of me and me Morry, Millie Annie and her busted brakes.

Trish and I would like to thank those of our fellow members who were especially helpful in our time of

need; Mike Dobson, Percy Scicluna, Graham Dines, Bruce Kerr, and Wayne Cunningham.

Thanks to everyone in general for your concern for our safety and wellbeing.

1. Correspondence and photos have been received from Roxburgh College about a Morris

and it has been arranged that they will attend our October General Meeting to give a

power point presentation on the Morris Minor and discuss the vehicle;

2. Neil Cheney advised that the photo competition is now open and more entries are

needed. Details in the Generator and entries are to include up to 4 photos of members

Please think of any additional runs you would like to do this year. Consider the following suggestion…

Impromptu Runs or Pop-up Runs on a week day

The Committee would like to encourage members to welcome other members to join them on their private

Morrie runs during the week, or whenever, to increase social interaction of members in-between Club

meetings and the monthly weekend runs. This has been difficult to arrange previously when relying on

either the Generator or the monthly meeting to broadcast run arrangements but with almost everyone on

the internet these days it should be possible to get this happening immediately following the simple

procedure outlined below.

As soon as you have a run in mind, preferably at least with 48 hours notice, send an email to the Editor

headed "Pop-up Run" giving details of date, time & place of meeting. (McDonalds are good mustering

places for coffee and initial toilet visit) and details of intended destination and suggestions of BYO food

or café etc. and your name and mobile phone number. The Editor will then immediately forward your e-

mail to all Club members listed on the Club database. All you have to do then is turn up at the selected

meeting point by the appointed time and a good time can be had by all. Feedback to the Club via any of

the Committee members would be appreciated after such runs or at the next Club meeting. Please note

that Pop-up runs are not intended to replace the monthly weekend run but be an additional Club activity.
