Radio City emerges the morepopular in the I2-34 age bracket, withits rock -orientated ad-lib style ofprogramming, whereas Radio Ettan ishaving the better of the rating, witholder listeners, with a format of easylistening. Financially, both stations spenttheir first year in the rod, through lo-sufficient advertising revenue and un-expectedly high running cow. Butbusiness is reported to have improvedgreatly during the summer months.

The The's Infected AlbumGuarantees Major Media BuzzJohnson's Cinematic Views Shift Away From Usual Pop Imagery

The release of The The, second LP"Infected", the follow up to 1983',

"Soul Mining", may well lead to somecontroversy, due to the unusual videosthat will accompany all 8 tracks of thealbum. Shot in various locations allover the world like Peru, New York,Bolivia and Istanbul, the video imagesare quite explicit and radical in

content. The The's sole member, ManJohnson, has a powerful statement tomake and his cinematic views areexpressing his uncommomising andrebellious nature. Filmed by a team ofdirectors, Tim Pope, Mark Romanekand Peter Christopherson, the swirl-ing and powerful images depict thestate of the human condition andcivilization in all its aspects. Not

traditional pop video imagery, but rawand naked shots with an overwhelm-ing sense of realism. Sometimes

violent, shattering and shocking, butalways in line with his bitter and cyni-cal lyrics. "The result is absolutelystunning", says Andy Frain, productmanager of Epic. "Although it certain-ly won't be shown on children's TV, it

progression in his works and the al-bum sounds more mature than ever",continues Srevens.

Much of the sales of the firstalbum (250.000 copies worldwide)were in part achieved by word ofmouth, as Matt Johnson is keen onkeeping a low profile. The new L17,iga"already guaranteed of muchpublreityand it will go silver it is

released, as pre -orders have alreadyexceeded ban.

Somehow Matt Johnson automati-cally gets media coverage these days. The release of his first single for 3years, Sweet Bird Of Truth, was acause of some controversy betweenCBS and Johnson. The lyrics, aboutthe thoughts of a US pilot as he is shotdown over Arab territory (the songwas actually written before the USbomb attacks on Libya), led CBS tobelieve it was better not to release thesingle. It was consequently deleted byCBS the day it witt released and (as

N + M, The Lady Rappers- School Rap (CNR) HollandFor master owner contact tan van Ackooy at CNR, at. 2940-13244; Ito. 12523.Calling this a 'rap song is a bit overdone as this is more a smooth and poppy form of talking on an insistentChic -like riff. No girls who do not particularly like school and find a way out by doing this school rap.Maybe not a very original idea, but it certainly works. Rapping is known for the successful way it exploitsall different sorts of styles into one melting pot and this song trots abng the lines of IOCC's 'Dreadlock Holi-day' K.C.'s 'That's The %Irby I Like It', Madonna's 'Holiday' and (in a second generation) M.C. GODFATHER'S GRAVITYJam. Brown is undoubtedly one of the most suc-cessful black entertainers of the last 25 years; over100 recordings for five different lapels .d makinga glorious return last year with the Rocky IV track'Living In America'. His new album for Scott.Bros, Gravity, marks another succesful chapter inBrown, career. With the title track already on itsway to become an airplay favourite on Europeanradio, the Godfather's familiar brand of hot 'n hardfunk gets . eighties styling by Dan Hartman inLet's Get Personal (co -written' by Alison Moyetwho can also be heard on the backing vocals),Turn Me Loose, I'm Ox Helgood and Goliath.

Miles Davis is one of the most influential jazvmusicians of the last 25 years who smrted record-ing with CBS in 1957 and since then released some30 albums as well as 4 compilations. He hasshaped the course of modern music with albumslike -In A Silent Way' and 'Bitches Brew', by manyregarded as the first successful attempts of fusingjazz with rock. Since then, his way of working hasbecame more and more eclectic, mixing Africanroots with rock and Hu as well as covering popsingles, like lam year's Time After Time' (CyndiLauper) and Michael Jackson% -Human Nature. After recording for nearly 20 years .r CBS, Davissuddenly switches to Warner Brothers for a new al-bum entitled Rau. The album featur. eight in-strumentals, mostly funky and jazz-rock themesplus one cover of a pop song, Scritti Pff ittiN Per-fect My. Other recommended tracks includeDon't Lose War Mind and the moody Portia.

Miami Vice sNr DON Johnson tries his handsat a musical career and, what nobody honestly ex-pected, not without success. On his debut for EpicJohnson surrounds himself with musicians like

Ron Wood, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Nelsonand Bonnie Raiff Johnson has a distinctive voicethat, coupled with his enormous popularity as a tvpersonality can make the album a big seller. Thefirst single from the album, the title track, is al-ready picking up very encouraging reports fromour correspondents and with other airplay con-Hoders include Inice On A Hotline, Love Roulette.d He Away.

Ex -Culture Club singer Ruby Ibrner pickedup good media reactions on her debut single IfYou're Ready, Come With Me, although it failed tomake real impact chartwise. The latter single is in-cluded on her Jive debut Haman Held Up Half TheSky and labelmates Billy Ocean and Jonathan Bu-tler share the production credits together with JohnAstrop, Brian 'Chuck' New and Womack & Wo-mack. With most of the material rooted in main -

am disco, tinged with gospel and reggae in-fluences, Ruby's soulful and warm voice shinesbest in Only Woman Bleed, Still On My Mind (withan intro almost exactly that of Lou Reed's WalkOn The Wild Side!) and the Patti LaBelle-ishIn My DT e.

English duo It's Immaterial follow up theirUK top 10 hit Driving Away From Home with adebut album for Siren, entitled Life's Hata AndThen You Die. The enigmatic duo display an anial-gain of styles that defy classification. Intriguingsongs floating from arty folk, atmospheric pop.d jazzy arrangements. Stunningly good withhighlights such as Space, Happy Talk and HangOn Sleepy Town.
