When I was in high school, one of my favorite singers was Joni Mitchell. She had a song, The Circle Game, that was a particular favorite. The refrain was this “they tell you it won’t be long now till you drag your feet to slow the circle down.” I knew it to be true then, but really know it to be true now. I cannot believe we are approaching a year of my being your pastor. It has been a year filled with joy and sorrow, a year that I feel privileged and grateful to have walked with you. Transitions are always filled with joy and sorrow as well.

I will continue to preach and provide communion once a month. While KFFUMC waits for a full time pastor to be appointed, one who would maintain the existing church half time and do a new church start the other half time (very unusual skill set, so this takes time), you will have a quarter time pastor to help you navigate the next phase of your journey. You will hear more from your council about him. Your council will need your help this coming year. Many of them have served for years, and the task of filling those other two Sundays should not fall on just them. You all have wonderful faith stories to tell and share with one another. Stop hiding them under a bushel, lol!

May you trust that God is doing a new thing in your midst, and may you join with God in helping that new thing come to fruition.

Shalom,

Pastor Helen

Directory Updates:

Half-Year Directories We plan to produce half-year directories in July. A few copies will be printed and can either be picked up in person when we gather together again or they can be mailed to your house. Those receiving the directory by email should expect an updated copy by mid July. If you have updated information, please let the church office know at 541-273-9579 (Jeannie’s phone) or [email protected]

Cassidy is graduating from Athens Area High School in Athens Pennsylvania on June 6. Graduation will be in groups of 25. Parents will only be able to watch via livestream. Cassidy will be attending Virginia Tech majoring in Residential Environments and Design.

More From Libby Stackpole: Libby would like to say “hi” to all of her Klamath Falls church family. She hopes everyone is staying well during the COVID-19 crisis. Kiley will graduate next year with a degree in biochemistry. She will take her MCATS in August and will be applying to med schools in the next two years. She works at a senior care facility in Virginia and got her CAN license at a Red Cross in Massachusetts. The Stackpole’s address is correct in our current directory. If you need her address, you can contact the office at [email protected] or Jeannie’s home phone at 541-273-9579.

Our Theological Task

Realities of intense human suffering, threats to the survival of life, and challenges to human dignity confront us afresh with fundamental theological issues: the nature and purposes of God, the relations of human beings to one another, the nature of human freedom and responsibility, and the care and proper use of all creation. “Our Theological Task,” The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church, 2016, ¶ 105.4

When We Gather Together Again for Worship Tentatively Scheduled for July 5

What will be required:

· DO NOT COME if you are feeling at all ill.

· If you are in a high-risk group, PLEASE STAY HOME

· Everyone over the age of two must wear a face mask unless they have a medical condition that makes it difficult to breathe such as severe asthma or they have a disability that prevents wearing a face mask; we will have some available for those who don’t bring one.

· Everyone must use hand sanitizer when they arrive.

· Worshipers will be asked to leave every other pew empty and sit at least 6’ from those who are not a member of their household.

What to expect:

· An offering plate will be available, we will not pass the plate.

· No singing and no brass or woodwinds instruments will be allowed.

· No fellowship time.

· Greet people from 6’ away with a wave, bow, or whatever is comfortable.

· Children who attend regularly will have a bag with their name on it with activity sheets and colored pencils inside (no stuffed animals); we will have a couple of bags available for visiting children.

Please note that these requirements and expectations could change. We do not yet know the date we will resume in-person worship.

Re-Opening Task Force

At the direction of the Bishop, our church has set up a Re-Opening Task Force to plan the phases for our return to in-person worship. The members of the Task Force are: Jean Freeman, Chair; Judy Armstrong, Jeannie Boese, Joe and Marie Maestas. The Task Force has met once via Zoom and has come up with a four phase plan that will be submitted to the Church Council for approval and then, as required, to our District Superintendent, Rev. John Tucker, for final approval. The plan will be published as soon as it is approved.

Hand Sanitizing Stations and Masks

We have ordered three automatic hand sanitizing dispensers and stands and hand sanitizing solutions. One stand and dispenser will be placed downstairs for PALM. Two will be on the main floor and will be moved around where needed. We ask that everyone using the building use the sanitizing solution when entering the building and when entering the sanctuary or other rooms. We have also ordered a package of cloth masks (NOT the masks used by medical personnel). We ask that everyone wear a mask of their own or one that we will provide. After worship, the masks should be taken home and not left at the church.

Why Wear a Mask? This illustration shows why we should all wear a mask. The person on the left is infected with COVID-19 and is asymptomatic. The person on the right is not infected. Please wear a mask and keep your distance to protect not only yourself but also others you may come into contact with. This link from the Center for Disease Control explains why we

should wear a mask, how to wear and wash it, and instructions for making sewn or non-sewn masks. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html

The Importance of Hand Hygiene and Wearing a Mask Written by Carol Usher, R.N

In order to keep you healthy the most important thing you can do is wash your hands with soap and water. If no sink is available then hand sanitizer is second best. Many of our church members are part of the vulnerable population who are more susceptible to many different respiratory diseases. If you have any signs/symptoms of illness please stay home. If you do come to church it would be kind of you to wear a mask. Surgical masks would be best and would give you some protection and would help protect others. Homemade masks are better than not having a mask on. When wearing a mask please try not to play with it after you have it on. If you have questions on how to put on a mask or take it off please ask me. Or if you have any other health questions feel free to call, text, or email. Carol Usher 541-281-0415 carol. Pastor’s Discretionary Fund

What is this fund?

· It is a fund used by the pastor to assist people in our community and our congregation with emergency needs not provided by other sources.

· Checks are made out to the business rather than the person requesting funds; i.e., Avista Utilities.

How is it funded?

· It is funded through our birthday offerings and special donations, outside of our operating budget.

· If you wish to make a donation to this fund, please mark it “Discretionary Fund” or “Outreach Fund.”

Thank you for helping us to be ready to assist people in need!

Between April 30 and May 26, we have given:

· 4 households 7 bags or boxes of food

· 3 households some financial assistance

Reaching Out and Helping Others

PALM (Provide A Loving Meal) is a free dinner every Tuesday and Sunday from 5:00 to 6:30. It is located in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church, which is the lower level door closest to 9th and High Streets. PALM is a volunteer program. It is funded by your donations. The Klamath Falls First United Methodist Church provides the Fellowship Hall, some maintenance, and utilities. PALM provides from 85 to 257 plates of food each meal. Families, neighborhood residents, and even people who simply want the social interaction of a meal come in. Most people walk. Note: PALM Dinners are currently being served as to-go meals. Volunteers from the Methodist Church, colleges, other churches, and many others come together to help.

Grocery Card Update

Last month we told you about using a grant from the district and $200 of congregational donations to give the city school district 110 $20 Sherm's gift cards. In addition, the council voted to commit $1000 from our Outreach budget and invited any of you who wanted to contribute to purchase cards for the county school district. An additional $1000 was raised through your generous donations and Crater Lake District offered us another $1000. So all told, the city schools received 125 cards, the county received 130 cards and we purchased 5 Holiday Market cards for our PALM team to hand out through PALM. In case numbers leave your head spinning, our little church spread $5200 of care and love to our town. Thank you! Rev. Helen Mansfield

MEMBERS and FRIENDS

May 2020 has closed. All bills and taxes have been paid. The monthly payroll was made. WOWSER! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? Operating income for the month totaled $7,559.16. Operating expenses totaled $7,457.79. INCOME EXCEEDED EXPENSES! Operating expenses included a budgeted $1,432.00 APPORTIONMENTS payment to the Conference. We have now paid in $7,160.00 or 41.7% of the $17,184.00 budgeted amount for 2020. Expenses also included a $1,000.00 payment from the budgeted line item: LOCAL MISSIONS. These monies were used to purchase Food Gift Cards (see more on this program elsewhere in THE GIFT). As we enter June 2020 we have an Operating fund balance of: $118,149.72. However, a portion of these monies are contained in outside or side pocket funds which have nothing to do with budgeted operating monies. As of the first of June, seven such funds existed. The funds and their respective balances:

After subtracting out the total of the 7 funds ($27,715.96), there is a carryover to June, 2020, of actual OPERATING monies totaling: $90,433.76. This sum represents a combination of generous stewardship and conversion to a half-time Pastor (resulting in a lower salary and the absence of Conference mandated benefits).

This month-to-month carryover is quite large and remained nearly unchanged, period-to-period. That said, it is worth noting that we expect most months of income during 2020 to lag expenses by $1,500-$2,500, thereby causing a steady and continuous erosion of the carryover.

As one element of stewardship, the gifting of our money is important to the survival of our church but I would be remiss if I did not recognize the countless acts of stewardship in all its diverse forms practiced by the members and friends at KFUMC.

Peace & Grace for us all,

Byron Beach, Treasurer
