The Gilded Age
“gilded” means to be covered in gold on the outside, but have cheap material on the inside
this term was the title of a Mark Twain novel, and stuck to describe the years 1870-1900
many believed while things looked all high-tech and shiny to the upper and middle class, the same was not true of the majority: the working poor

“survival of the fittest” became the phrase: society becomes better because only those who are fit to live in it find success and survive

Rockefeller claimed the two ideas were “the law of nature and of God”

POLITICS IN WASHINGTONThe two major parties were closely competitive in the late 1800s; tariff rates and big business regulation were hotly debated political issues.
President Garfield didn’t hand out White House jobs when he was elected like most other Presidents did; he didn’t believe in that system
One job seeker was very frustrated--thinking he’d have better luck with the VP, he shot Garfield; the President died a few weeks later of infection

tariffs were raised after Civil War, many said they should be lower now that US companies can compete
Cleveland proposes lowering them, Republicans in Senate block the bill
tariffs become an issue in the next election...Democrats want to lower, Republicans do not...Cleveland is defeated, but barely

McKinley tariff: cut agricultural tariffs, but raised them on manufactured products
this makes all prices go up, as corporate factories now have loads of protection--consumers are angry
Sherman Anti-Trust Act: supposed to prevent corporations from combining and monopolizing an industry
doesn’t work--it’s not clear and no one cares to enforce
