JANUARY MEETING (Continued from Page 1)round, framed mirror mounted on a stand. He tapped it demonstrating its solidity then pointed out platforms on each side. He next placed a small object on the front platform, covered it, and, from the rear, pulled it directly through the mirror. This is a one-of-a-kind custom built illusion that Dave built himself.

Next, Pepe Puglisi magically linked a bunch of separate chain links into one long chain. He proceeded to show us how easy it is to escape from chain padlocked around his wrists. Gary Berard performed a card

trick by first splitting a deck in half. A card was selected and returned to one half. With the other half, a spectator counted down randomly to any card, which turned out to be a 10. Counting down 10 cards in the first half of deck and the selected card is found.

Last but not least, Dale Lorzo showed us how to defy gravity by filling a milk bottle full of water. Covering the opening with a small sheet of paper and turning the whole bottle upside down. He then proceeded to remove the paper, retaining water in the bottle at will. Finally, Dale performed his own version of the Cut and Restored Rope.

orange groves, farms and ranches. But a severe drought brought an end to his dreams and orange blossoms never filled the valley.

After the Lane family moved away in the 19402, the mansion was divided into a multi-family home, then became a home for the elderly, and was finally transformed into a maze of small apartments. By 1960, the fate of the Mansion was uncertain. Then Milt Larson met the owner, Thomas O. Glover.

Milt was a writer on the NBC TV show, “Truth or Consequences.” His office was on the ninth floor of a Hollywood office building that overlooked the Lane mansion. Milt’s late father, William W. Larson, Sr., was a renowned magician and had long dreamed of building an elegant private club for magicians.

The Lane mansion would become that club. In September of 1961, Milt and a crew of eternally generous friends and volunteers began the extraordinary task of returning this run-down apartment building to its glorious past. After months of scraping and sanding, the rich Victorian elegance began to resurface to what it is today.

Magic Castle - Turns 50 Years Old

On January 2, 2013, the Magic Castle turned 50 year old. It opened its doors in 1963. Today more than five decades later, the Castle has become the world-famous “home” to the Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. and their invited guests.

The Magic Castle began its life as a private home built in 1909 by banker and real estate magnate Rollin B. Lane. Lane owned much of what is now Hollywood. and dreamed of turning his land into

“When you practice, turn on your radio or TV set - preferably to some program which doesn’t interest you or in a language which you do not understand. At first the noise will be distracting but you will gradually get used to it and will then not be thrown out of stride when there is background chatter anywhere you may perform.” Slydini
