Problems

• Data are stored in different databases, technologies, terminologies

• How to retrieve data?

✘Build many retrieval systems

➡difficult maintenance, hard to find the correct system

✘Build a single, big, complex system

➡Hard to meet the requirements of the whole collaboration

➡Management is centralized in a developer or team

• Experiment should last 20+ years, and has a high turnover

• Need for maintenance and training

Example: Equipments

• Different Attributes for each type of equipment

• E.g. Computers (CPU, MAC Address) and Cables (Length, Connector)

• All equipments must be registered and tracked

• Have a single model for all the equipments?

• Have multiple systems for viewing the details of each equipment?

The Glance System

• Single platform for generating Search and Insert/Update interfaces

• Can access any database (technology, location, etc)

• Interfaces are described independently of the database technology, in a high level description language (no coding)

• All interfaces managed by a single system → lower maintenance costs

• Collaborators can create their interfaces and share them → decentralized management of data

• Data can be output in multiple ways

• HTML, XML, Excel files, Plots, ROOT Files
