Gleeson College took part in something amazing over the weekend. 65 staff,

students and Old Scholars came together with a couple thousand others

to take the fight back to cancer!

Late last year, students registered to be part of the Gleeson College Teams for the Adelaide Central Relay for Life. Then they spent the last few months fundraising for this cause that offers so much support to those in need

and helps fund crucial research and development so that one day we can live in a world where the words “you have cancer” are no longer heard.

The Gleeson students were awesome, taking part in all the activities, including

the purple hand dance, volleyball games, tug-o-war, multi-legged races and silent disco. They also

took the time to stop and take part in the Candlelight Ceremony, where we remembered those we have lost,

stood with those who are fighting and celebrated those who have beaten cancer. We are very proud of our

College community raising over $15,000 this year, which is an amazing effort. I

want to thank all families, students and staff, in particular Team Captains, Miss Feleppa, Mr Boden and Miss Staffin,

Mr Glover and Mr Sellers along with all staff and family members who visited during the event and helped make

Relay for Life 2018 so much fun. Finally, a big thank you to every one within our community that took the time to support this cause - Gleeson College

continues to take the fight back to cancer. Well done and I look forward to our Mini Relay with our Middle School

students in Term 4 and taking our Seniors and GC Old Scholars back to Adelaide Central in February 2019.

GC AMBASSADORS SHINE AT RELAY FOR LIFE

Relay for LifeAs you would be aware, last weekend 65 Gleeson College students, staff and Old Scholars participated in this year’s Cancer Council Relay for Life at the Adelaide Showgrounds in Wayville. This level of participation for this event speaks volumes of the commitment and servant leadership that exists within the Gleeson Community, and it has become one of the highlights of our school calendar.

Once again our students shone, were a great credit to themselves and ambassadors for the College. My thanks

also go to all of the staff that were involved, both with the organisation of the Gleeson College Teams, and in attendance over the weekend. In particular, our Assistant Principal - Religious Identity and Mission, Mr Adam Cibich, who provided inspirational leadership for this event. Mr Cibich had the privilege of being the MC for the incredibly moving ‘Candlelight Ceremony’ on Saturday evening. Mr Cibich and the other staff involved as team leaders - Mr Joshua Boden, Ms Lisa Feleppa and Ms Rachel Staffin - are to be commended on their organisation of this remarkable experience for our students. The Gleeson College Teams raised over $15,000 to support the wonderful work of the Cancer Council - an incredible achievement.

Athletics CarnivalI write this newsletter article on the eve of our Athletics Carnival to be held at Tilley Reserve. We are very much looking forward to wonderful weather and a great day of healthy competition, maximum involvement and a day filled with the great community spirit for which Gleeson College is renowned. I would like to thank Ms Rachel Staffin and her dedicated team of helpers for the wonderful organisation of this carnival, and we look forward to reporting the outcome of the day in next week’s issue of The Globe. Thank you also to the House Captains for their great organisation and enthusiasm.

Open NightAs you would be aware, next Tuesday we are hosting our annual Open Night from 4-8pm. To facilitate the planning and organisation of this event, students will be dismissed early at 1.05pm, as was outlined in a letter to all families. I know that many students will be staying at school and showcasing a wide array of learning activities and I thank them in advance for their willingness to contribute in this important way to our community.

Open Night is not only about prospective families, it is also a celebration of our community. As such, I extend an invitation to all current families to visit the College on Open Night. Some of you may not have been into the school for some time and Open Night presents a wonderful opportunity for all our community to see our great College ‘in action’.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING > Friday 26 MarchHarassment and bullying of any kind is not only illegal, but is contrary to the mission statement and general philosophy of Gleeson College. As a community who believes in the intrinsic worth of each individual, we will not tolerate harassment.

What is harassment and bullying?Harassment is any actions or words which cause hurt, offence, fear, insecurity etc. This includes using electronic media such as inappropriate text messages and emails. If someone feels they are being harassed then harassment is occurring. If you feel: angry or upset, unsafe, embarrassed, hurt, frightened, helpless, humiliated, uncomfortable or unfairly treated as a result of someone’s repeated actions or words, then you are being harassed. Bullying is defined at this College as the persistent harassment of another. Any such behaviour will be treated as a serious infringement of the aims and expectations of Gleeson College.

If you feel you are being harassed, what can you do about it?Students can refer to the Grievance flowchart and Bullying flowchart posted

At our school we treat others the way we want to be treated.

YEAR 8 SCIENCE > Egg-cellent Practical Experiment

Last week in Year 12 Nutrition students completed a practical experiment testing for the presence of Vitamin C and sugars in a variety of food

samples.

In the topic of Fundamentals of Human Nutrition, we look at the various

Macro and Micronutrients. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and

predominately found in high amounts in citrus fruits. Vitamin C is fragile and easily destroyed by heat and light. It is also highly beneficial in our bodies as it helps with the absorption of iron, resists infections and maintains healthy

skin and gums.

So many of our foods contain simple sugars and the Year 12 Nutrition Class were also learning about the presence

of simple sugars in foods and the various health problems associated with consuming higher amounts of sugar found generally in processed

foods.

Mrs Lisa Cibich,Year 12 Nutrition Teacher

Our Year 8 Science Class recently conducted an experiment to test the strength of eggs. Students did this by submerging an egg in vinegar, which they found dissolves the hard eggshell, leaving just the film that protects the egg yolk.

Students then bounced the egg onto the floor and collected data to see if there was a correlation between weight, and essentially the strength of the egg, to withstand bouncing from an increased height before breaking!

HOUSE SPIRIT BOARD > Showcasing The Gleeson 10 Values!

Our students took the time to learn about the College and their House motto, values, creed and crest as we prepare for Athletics Carnival on Friday.

Students were asked to make a connection between their House motto/values/creed/crest and the following Gleeson 10 values > Compassion, Dignity &

Respect, Pride in Success, Pursuit of Excellence and Service to Others. This is the fantastic result!

VISITING AUTHOR STEVEN HERRICK PERFORMS HIS WORK TO YEAR 10sOn Tuesday, all of our Year 10 students

attended a presentation by visiting author Steven Herrick, and were

entertained by his unique combination of poetry reading, story-telling and

thoughts on writing.

Steven Herrick is a renowned Australian poet and author who has published 23 novels and books of poetry for adults and children. His

2006 verse novel Lonesome Howl is a class text studied as part of the Year

10 English curriculum here at Gleeson, so it was a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet the author as he can provide valuable insights into the process of writing, and the power of stories to see the world from a new

perspective.

The students and staff attending this presentation found it extremely entertaining and though-provoking.

Students can find a number of Steven’s novels in the Thomas Library if they wish to discover more of his work.

Interested students and community members can find more information

on Steven Herrick through his website: http://www.stevenherrick.com.au/

We thank Steven again for his time and his willingness to share his work with

our students.

Mrs Jessica McCarthy,Literacy Coordinator

Gleeson Music and Creative Arts students had the opportunity

to engage in a masterclass with acclaimed Broadway Composer and

pianist John Bucchino recently.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with an industry

professional from overseas. John worked with students both as a group and individually, offering

amazing advice, encouragement and insight. We thank him for his

visit.
