Fly-OffTasksandMeasurementsThefly-offwillconsistoftwophases:techinspectionandflightdemonstration.Variousscoredandunscoredattributeswillbemeasuredorvalidatedineachphase.Thescoredparametersaresize,noise,andspeed.
TechInspection
Teamsmustreporttotechinspectionatthefly-offwiththeirdeviceinflight-readyconditionatfullyfueledweight.
Conformance
Teamsmustcertifythattheirentryisone-in-the-sameasthedevicethathasbeenrepresentedtoGoFlyandotherauthoritiesandthathascompletedthedocumentedandloggedtesting.
Teamswhowillflytheflightdemonstrationunmannedwithadummyinsteadofahumanoperatormustshowthatthedummyisnotstructurallyormechanicallyintegraltothedevice(beyondthelevelthatahumanoperatorwouldbe)byremovingthedummyandexhibitingtheoperatorinterfaceusingahumanoperator.
Sizemeasurement(SIZE)
Thescoringparameterforsizeisthemaximumsingledimensionsinanydirectionbetweentwoplanes,measuredinfeet.
Theoperatorisnotincluded.
Non-rigidelements,suchasharnessesandstraps,areincludedintheirpositionwitha5’9”operatorinplace.
Ifthedevicehasmorethanoneconfigurationusedforanormalfullflightprofile(asdemonstratedintheflightdemonstration),themeasurementistakenforthelargestofanynon-transientconfigurationusedinflightorontheground.Componentsthatcontinuouslyrotatearetreatedasafulldisc.
Sightlines
TheoperatorfieldofviewistheGoFlymetricfortheopen-airflightexperience.Aconewith90°aperture(providedbycontestorganizers),withtheapexatthedesigneyeposition(thebridgeoftheoperator'snosewhileinflightposture),mustnotintersectoroverlapanypartofthedeviceotherthantransparenciesthatarenotprimarystructure.
Theaxisoftheconemustbewithin20degreesoftheoperator'slineofsightvector.Thelineofsightmustbehorizontalandforward-facingforsomesteadyandtrimmedflightmode(e.g.,hoverorcruise),chosenbytheteam.

Groundtransport
Duringtechinspection,teamswillberequiredtodemonstratethatthedevice,unpoweredandunoccupiedbytheoperator,canbemovedfromonegroundlocationtoanotheroveralevelhardsurface.Unpoweredgroundaidessuchasdolliesareallowed.Alltasksrequiredforthegroundtransportdemonstrationmustbeachievablebyasingleindividual.Requiredlifting(notincludingcarrying)shouldnotexceed80lbs;requiredpushing/pullingshouldnotexceed50lbs.
FlightDemonstration
Fortheflightdemonstration,thedevice,withfulloperator(ordummystand-in)weight,mustcompleteasingleflightprofilethatsuccessfullyincludesallofthefollowingtasks:

1. Takeoffandclimbwithoutviolatingthetakeoff/landingenvelope.
2. Conductaspeedrunofsixlapsarounda1nmicourse.
3. Demonstratethecapabilitytoabortalandingbyperformingatouch&gowithoutviolatingthetakeoff/landingenvelope.
4. Afterloiteringsuchthattotalflightdemonstrationenduranceisgreaterthan20minutes,descendandlandwithoutviolatingthetakeoff/landingenvelope.
Takeoff/landingenvelope
Thetakeoff/landingenvelopeisa30footdiametercylinder.Thevirtualwallsoftheenvelopeare12feethigh.

ftfromenvelopecenter.
Inaddition,2.25”x3.75”x8”(nominaldimensions)bricks(availablehere)willbearrangedtodefinetheboundaryontheground.Thebrickswillbearrangedapproximatelyevery24inchesandstooduprighttorestonthe2”x8”side.If,atanytimeduringtheflightdemonstration,abrickisknockedoverbythedevice,operator,ordownwash,theboundaryisconsideredviolated.
Nopartoftheboundarymaybeviolatedbyanypartofthedeviceoroperator.Violatingtheboundaryduringanyflightdemonstrationphaseconstitutesafailedflightdemonstrationattempt.
Noisemeasurement(NOISE)

Soundpressurelevelwillbemeasuredatsixevenlyspacedlocations50feetfromthecenterofthetakeoff/landingenvelope.Thesoundpressurelevelwillbemeasuredindecibelsrelativeto20micropascals,withAfrequencyweighting,Stimeweighting,andusingClass2orbetterequipmentincurrentcalibration.
Themaximumsoundlevelwillbedeterminedateachofthesixmeasurementlocations.Thearithmeticmeanofthehighestthreeofthesevaluesyieldsasoundlevelrating.
Asoundlevelratingwillbedeterminedduringtheflightdemonstrationduringtakeoffandclimbandduringdescentandlanding(notduringthetouch&go).ThehigherofthetwosoundlevelreadingsindBAisthenoisescore.
Speedmeasurement(SPEED)
Thecourseisdefinedbytwopylons(physicalmarkerswithinfiniteverticalprojections)located0.5nmiapart.
Alapinvolvescrossingthestart/stopplaneintheair,flyingaroundbothpylons,andthencrossingthestart/stopplaneagain.

The6nminominallengthofthecourseisdividedbythetotaltimeforthespeedruntoyieldthespeedscoreinunitsofknots.
Thespeedrunmaybeflownatanysafealtitudeoutofgroundeffect(definedasatleast1xthesizemeasurementatalltimes).Thereisnoguaranteethattheentirecoursewillbeobstacle-freeataltitudesbelow50’AGL.
Touch&go
Thetouch&gomaneuvermustbeginandendabove12ftAGL.Contactwiththegroundmustbeinsidethetakeoff/landingenvelope.
Contactwiththegroundmustbeonlymomentary.Thedevicemustbedesignedsuchthatabortingalandingispossiblewithorwithoutfirsttouchingtheground.
Totalendurance
Thetimingfortotalendurancebeginsduringtakeoffatthemomentwheneverypartofthedeviceoroperatorisnolongertouchingtheground.
Thetimingstopsduringlandingattouchdown.
Atotalendurancelessthantherequirementconstitutesafailedflightattempt.
Loiteringflighttofulfilltheendurancemaybeflownatanysafealtitudeoutofgroundeffect.
Reserves
Emergencyreservesforanadditionaltenminutesofflightandalandingwillbedemonstratedbyweighingfuelconsumedduringthemissionandfuelremaining.
Teamswithdevicesthatdonotsignificantlychangeweightconsumingenergyduringaflightmustprovideameanstodemonstratethefullemergencyreservecapability.
Harshoperatorconditions
Topreventunacceptablyharshconditionsfortheoperator,acontest-providedsensorpackagemaybeusedduringtheflightdemonstrationtoensurethattheoperatorordummydoesnotendureextremesustainedgforcesgreaterthan5gordangerousimpulsesfromhardlandings.Violatingtheselimitsduringanyflightdemonstrationphasemayrequirerepeatingsomeoralloftheflightdemonstration.

Fly-OffScoring
ThefinalscoreisafunctionofthescoredparametersasdescribedintheFly-OffTasks.Fromeachvalue,ascorefactor,θ,isdetermined,asshowninthefollowingtableandfigure.
Thevariousscorefactorsarecombinedtodeterminethefinalscoreasfollows:
TobecompliantandeligiblefortheGrandPrize,smallestprize,orquietestprize,eachscoredparametermustmeetthethreshold.

AdditionalRequirementsThedevicemustbedesignedandbuilttomaximizethefly-offscorewhilemeetingorexceedingthefollowingspecifications.
General
Fly-offcompletion
Thedevicemustbeabletosuccessfullycompleteallfly-offtasksandjudgingcriteria.
Flyingconditions
Thedensityaltitudeatthefly-offwillbenomorethan5000ft.Maximumwindsforaflightattemptwillbenomorethan15knots(includingnomorethan5knotgustfactor).
Thefly-offwillbeconductedunderdayVFRconditions.Lowvisibility,lowceilings,orprecipitationshouldnotbeexpected.Noteamwillbeexpectedtoflyinunacceptableweather.
Unmannedoption
Thedevicemustbedesignedtocarryahumanoperatorofnormalsizeandweight.However,unmannedflightasaremotelypilotedorautonomousUAVisallowed.The“operator”foranunmanneddevicemustbeananthropomorphictestdummy(ATD)definedby49CFRpart572,subpartB(50thpercentilemale)oraGoFly-approvedequivalent.Pre-approvedequivalentsaretheSimulaidsRescueRandymodels9000(withwaterballast)and1436.AGoFly-provideddummywillbeavailable.Teamsmayalsochoosetoprovidetheirown,whichmaybemodifiedwithinreasontoincludenecessaryavionicsandactuatorsrequiredforremotelypilotingthedevice.
Operatorweight
Theoperator(orballasteddummy)weightmustbe200lbsormore.Thisincludesclothing,gloves,helmet,personalparachute,otherpersonalprotectiveequipment,contest-providedGPSandsensorpackage,andanynecessaryoperator-carriedballasttoachievetheminimumoperatorweight.
Airworthiness
TeamsareresponsibleforensuringtheirdeviceandoperatorarelegallyallowedtoflyandarenotinconflictwithanyFAAorotherregulationsbothduringtestingandpracticeandatthefly-off.
Singleunit
Thedevicemustremainasingleunitthroughoutoperation.Noadd-on,detachable,ordisposablelaunch/landingaidesareallowed.
Energysources

Refuelingorrechargingofthedevicemustutilizereadilyavailableandsafesources.Approvedenergysourcesareelectricity,automotivefuels,andaviationfuels.Otherenergysourcesareallowedwithpre-approvalfromGoFly.
Swappingofbatterypacksisallowedbetweenflightattempts,butteamsmuststillutilizerechargeablebatterychemistries.
Reusability
Thedevicemustbereusable,i.e.,itmustbedesignedsuchthatonlytheenergysource(seeabove)mustbereplacedbetweenflights.
Safety
Human-ratable
Theintentofthiscompetitionistodeveloptechnologiesthatcanberatedforpeopletosafelyflyinthefuture.Consequently,thecompetitionrequiresthatalldevicearchitecturesare,atthefundamentalconceptlevel,"human-ratable."Theorganizersdefine"human-ratable"asfollows:
Adevicethathasnosystemsorcomponents,exceptforprimarystructure,inwhichasinglepointfailureresultsinlossofanoperator'slifeorlimb.
Systemsorcomponentswhich,intheeventoftheirfailure,permitsafelandingoftheoperator,maybeofsinglestringdesign.
Structureandcomponentsuitability
Theprimarystructuremaybeasinglepointoffailureif
a. adequateprooftestingisperformed,orb. itisdesignedtoloadssignificantlyhigherthanexpectedloads(safetyfactor≥1.5)andits
structuralintegrityisregularlyinspected.Adequatequality,performance,andservicelifeofallcomponentsmustmeetappropriaterequirementsfortheintendedapplication.
Loggedsafepriorflight
Aminimumof5flighthourswithoutincidentorconfigurationchangesmustbeloggedpriortothefly-off.Thismustincludeatleast10takeoffs,1hourtotalofflightanalogoustospeedcourseflight,10go-aroundmaneuvers,and10landingstoafullstopandpower-down.
Extremelyminorconfigurationchangesareallowedduringtheseflightsaslongastheyinnowaynegativelyaffectsafety,theyaredeclaredtoorganizers,andatleastoneflighthourisloggedafterallchanges.
Safetyreport

Teamsarerequiredtomaintainandperiodicallysubmitasafetyreport.Thesafetyreporthasnopagelimitsorfilesizelimits.
Inthesafetyreport,teamsmust:
● Identifyanysingle-pointsystemfailurethatmakesthedeviceunsafeasdefinedabove.● Proposedesignmitigationstotheidentifiedsinglepointfailuressuchthatthedesigncouldbe
madefail-safeandhuman-ratable.Examplesofmitigationsmayincludeenhancingcomponentreliability,softwaredevelopmentandtesting,orutilizingemergencyrescueejectionandparachutesystems.Teamsarestronglyencouragedtoincorporateasmanyofthesemitigationsintotheirfly-offentriesaspossible.
Inaddition,teamsarestronglyencouraged,butnotrequired,toincludeinthesafetyreport:
● Documentationofstructuralanalysisand/ortesting.● Documentationandlogsofflighttestingoranyothertestingtodate.● Afunctionalhazardanalysis.
Teamsafetyresponsibility
Competitionteamsaresolelyresponsibleforthesafeoperationoftheirvehicles.Thisincludesthesafetyoftheoperator,thevehicle,andanyobjectorpersonontheground.Theorganizersofthecompetitionwillverifythateachreportsubmittedaddressestheaboverequirements.Ifthetestteamsdonotaddresstheaboverequirements,theywillnotbeallowedtoproceedinthecompetition.However,theorganizerswillnotassesstheadequacyofthesubmissionfromasafetyperspective.Thecompetitionteamissolelyresponsibleforidentifyingallrisks,mitigatingthemtothemaximumextentpossible,anddeterminingiftheresidualriskisacceptable.
