Mission

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation sustains the commitment of healthcare professionals to provide compassionate, collaborative and scientifically excellent patient care.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation began in 1988, when Dr Gold a pediatric neurologist at Columbia University, realized that his medical students and residents were losing crucial connections with their own patients as the focus in patient care was shifting towards technology. The Foundation supports humanism in medicine and sustains the commitment of healthcare professionals to provide compassionate, collaborative and scientifically excellent patient care.

• Gold Humanism Honor Society

• The Research Institute

• Tell Me More®

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Intended for first year students in medical, nursing and physician assistant programs, the White Coat Ceremony is a rite of passage that often takes place during the initial days of orientation. It serves as a powerful way to ensure that students understand that healthcare is a noble profession that requires not only technical skill, but compassion as well. The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) recognizes students, residents and faculty who are exemplars of compassionate patient care and who serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine. GHHS members are peer nominated and are the ones that others say they want taking care of their own family. The Society currently has over 25,000 members in training and practice. There is a pressing need to deepen our understanding of the complexities of humanism in medicine. In 2012, the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Research Institute was established to help accelerate discovery in humanism in healthcare, disseminate findings, and use those findings to make change. Tell Me More® (TMM) is a way for the entire healthcare team to get to know patients better. We are starting to introduce this program into our hospital.

White Coat Ceremony

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Each year, UVM first year medical students are formally welcomed to the medical profession at the annual White Coat Ceremony. This rite of passage is designed to instill the values of professionalism, humanism, and compassionate patient care, as you gather with your classmates, faculty and staff supporters, family and friends at Ira Allen Chapel to receive your white coats and stand together to recite the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont Oath.

Presentation Notes
A typical patient visit lasts 15 minutes, with only 2% of that time spent on empathy and reassurance. That’s enough time to ask the question: “How are you?” but is it really enough time to hear the answer? Tell Me More® (TMM) is a way for the entire healthcare team to get to know patients better. Patients are asked 3 non-medical questions about their lives. Answers are displayed on wall stickers by patients’ beds to remind all care providers that every patient is more than just their diagnosis. The current GHHS members are working to introduce Tell Me More to some of our medical floors.

The Larner College of Medicine established a chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2005.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Gold Humanism Honor Society is the heart of our Community of Caring. Founded in 2002, through the generous support of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Berrie Foundation, and an anonymous donor, GHHS now has more than 160 chapters in medical schools and residency programs. More than 35,000 medical students, physicians, and other leaders have been inducted and serve as role models of the human connection in healthcare. The Larner College of Medicine established a chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2005. The purpose of our chapter is to recognize those students who have demonstrated outstanding personal/interpersonal characteristics in their interactions with fellow students/teachers/staff and/or patients and their families. The selection of students for this honor is obtained from students within the class using a peer evaluation survey and from members of our faculty and staff.

The purpose of the event is to bring the medical community together for connection, healing and entertainment in a way that fosters resilience. Sign up for the Workshop on Dec 4th or the Slam event on Jan 23.
