Choose Sun – in a Safe Wayby Lisa Kilgour

It’s almost summer and the sun is shining! Oh, wait…is the sun

good for us or should we shy away from it? Or more importantly,

should we enjoy the sun with or without sunscreen?

Th is is a very controversial topic, and a decision that each of us needs to make individually. Th ere are many factors to consider: Vitamin D absorption, free radical damage, cancer risk, painful sunburns…etc.

Vitamin D AbsorptionArticle after article in all of the top news sources are exclaiming the benefi ts of Vitamin D and the hazards of a Vitamin D defi ciency. We have now linked a Vitamin D defi ciency to MS, lowered immune function, and cancer. Vitamin D supplementation has skyrocketed over the last few years due to all of these new studies.

Th e sun is our body’s favourite way of absorbing Vitamin D. 15 minutes in the sun with your arms and face exposed will allow most of us to absorb 10,000 IUs of Vitamin D. A sunscreen with an SPF of 8 or above reduces our Vitamin D absorption by 95%. So, if we wear sunscreen daily, it would take 3½–5 hours of sun exposure to absorb the same amount of Vitamin D.

Actually, this has been seen in Australia as well. Recent studies found that those who followed the successful “Slip-Slop-Slap” health campaign encouraging Australians to use sunscreen when exposed to sunlight to prevent skin cancer, had an increased risk of Vitamin D defi ciency. And ironically, a Vitamin D defi ciency is linked to a higher risk of many cancers, including melanoma.

Free Radical DamageSunburn is a sign of free radical damage…and for many of us it’s a very pain-ful sign. Free radical damage can lead to early aging of the skin and possibly skin cancer, which is the main reason we wear sunscreen and why it’s in most

Page 5: The Good Life July/August 2012

that once you slap it on and go outside, start to degrade and damage DNA. In North America, all new sunscreen ingredients must be tested for their photocarcinogenic eff ects, but as of 2008, most sunscreens on the market still contained known photocarcino-genic chemicals due to a grandfather clause.

Since 1%–10% of the chemicals in sunscreen are absorbed into the skin, we need to take

a very careful look at what we slather onto our skin. To add fuel to the controversy, in August 2007 the United States FDA tenta-tively concluded, “Th e available evidence fails to show that sunscreen use alone prevents skin cancer.”

Th e most important thing to remember this summer is to get outside! Go outside and enjoy the summer while it’s still here!

Safe Sun Tips1. PROTECT YOURSELF Slowly work up your body’s own protection to the sun, a tan

or protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves.

2. INTERNAL SUNSCREEN Fight against free radical damage with antioxidants.

These are found in the skins of colourful berries, fruits, and vegetables.

3. VITAMIN D Enjoy at least 10–15 minutes in the sun each day or take a supplement.

Be sure to keep your Vitamin D levels high!

4. LOOK AT THE INGREDIENTS If you feel you need sunscreen (otherwise you’ll get

a very painful burn), be sure to read the ingredients. Visit the Environmental Working

Group website at www.ewg.org for a list of sunscreens they have tested to be safe and

free of known carcinogens.

Healthy Sunscreen Product Guide

cosmetics. But, what is forgotten is the free radical damage created by these very sunscreens!

A study published in October 2006 found that the three main sunscreen ingredients, octocrylene, octylmethoxycinnamate, and benzophenone-3 create an increase in free radical damage in the skin, which was higher for the sunscreen user than for the non-user. Such an increase in free radicals might increase the chance of melanoma.

Cancer RiskTh is topic is still out for debate – do sun-screens prevent more cancers than they may directly, or indirectly cause?

A Vitamin D defi ciency can be solved by taking a supplement, but what about the other issues with sunscreen?

On top of the free radical damage caused by some of these chemicals, an uncommon nugget of knowledge is that many sunscreen ingredients become carcinogenic when ex-posed to sunlight. Th at’s right, many of the sunscreens on the market contain chemicals

GMO in the Okanagan?A Farmer Attempts to Introduce a GMO Apple to the Okanagan

Okanagan Specialty Fruits is a privately owned biotechnology company that is seek-ing approval to introduce a genetically mod-ifi ed apple to the orchards of the Okanagan Valley. When the white fl esh of apples is exposed to air it naturally turns a shade of brown. Okanagan Specialty Fruits has developed a method of altering an apple’s genetic makeup to eliminate its tendency to brown when exposed to oxygen. Th e compa-ny has named their GMO apple the Arctic apple, and has taken it to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada in hopes of gaining permission to begin commercial planting. Neal Carter, the presi-dent of Okanagan Specialty Fruits, said that portions of the apple’s genetic makeup have been removed to eradicate the natural browning process. Carter’s rationale for the creation of this genetically modifi ed apple is that people prefer to eat apples that have no brown pieces, and that they are willing

to consume genetically altered apples to achieve that result.

Before the Arctic apple is approved by the CFIA and Health Canada – a process that Carter believes will happen within the year – Okanagan Specialty Fruit must fi rst face resistance from local famers and consum-ers. Many BC fruit growers are concerned that the introduction of a genetically modi-fi ed apple may cause the province’s stellar reputation of being a quality fruit supplier to become tainted. Most growers believe that apples are enjoyed by consumers regardless of their tendency to turn brown, and that many consumers are not support-ive of genetically modifi ed food items.

BC Minister of Agriculture Don McRae stated that the province is taking the application very seriously, and that the government is intent on preserving the positive reputation BC fruit growers have

diligently earned. He insists that the gov-ernment will take all scientifi c information into account and ensure that the relevant parties have an opportunity to voice their opinions. Some BC fruit growers do not feel that evaluating the apples simply from a science and health based approach is suffi cient. Th e apple will also have serious eff ects on the local economy and severe market repercussions. Introducing a geneti-cally modifi ed apple into the valley has the potential to contaminate the other species of apples that are grown in the vicinity, and to become a slippery slope towards a Monsanto style domination of the local apple market. Genetically modifi ed seeds are considered intellectual property and as such are subject to patent laws. Technically speaking, if seeds from the Arctic apple were blown onto a neighboring farm and pollinated, that farmer could be sued for patent infringement. Okanagan Specialty

path to perfection?

Page 7: The Good Life July/August 2012

Fruits could gain a monopoly on apples grown throughout the valley, eff ectually putting local farmers out of business.

Th e Arctic apple will be available for consumer purchase, but a more lucrative market lies in the fast food sector. Th ese non browning apples could be sold to companies that use pre cut apples in their outlets, such as McDonalds. Contracts with large fast food type companies would require massive output, resulting in factory style production and distribution methods, creating a change in the current holistic method of BC fruit farming.

If the Arctic apple is approved, it could be devastating to local orchardists and the valley economy, and would have the poten-tial to completely destroy the Okanagan’s organic fruit industry. Bees that help to pollinate the apple trees carry genetic infor-mation from one tree to the next, meaning that the altered DNA of the Arctic apple could result in the contamination of all

organic apple orchards. Farmers could lose their organic certifi cation as a result of the contamination, and could have legal action taken against them for the unsanctioned use of a patented item.

For those consumers that prefer to eat a pristine white apple, there are other species of apples, like Ambrosia, that naturally do not brown when exposed to oxygen. Consumers should also be aware that the browning enzyme that Okanagan Specialty Fruits has removed from their Arctic apple is also the enzyme that reveals bruising. Th is means that a very bruised Arctic apple would appear to be in perfect condition, meaning more sales for the producer and decreased quality for the consumer. Furthermore, the browning is a result of the apple beginning to decompose and become an organic compound. It is impos-sible to say if an apple without this enzyme would decompose and become compost, or remain perfectly intact in a landfi ll for years on end, contributing to waste like plastic

bags and Styrofoam which exist in our waste systems for decades.

As consumers it is our responsibility to take a stand against GMO foods and the re-percussions they have on our local environ-ment and economy.

Th e most easily absorbable form of dietary iron is red meat, especially liver. Good non-meat sources of iron include beans, molasses, dried fruits, whole grains and green leafy vegetables. Th e absorption rate for heme (meat) source of iron is up to 30% while the absorption rate for the vegetable sources is approximately 5%. Non-heme iron absorption is enhanced by vitamin C which is naturally present in many iron-rich vegetables, like spinach.

Iron supplementation is often required to raise iron levels. Ferrous sulfate is the most common iron supplement, but it is notorious for causing constipation. Ferrous pyrophosphate is a form of iron that is so gentle on the stomach it is used in infant cereals. Sunactive Fe is micro-nized (very small particle size) ferrous pyrophosphate that is microencapsulated to allow it to be dispersed and assimilated easily. Sunactive Fe is extremely safe, stable, has no taste and is free from gastrointestinal side eff ects. Natural

Factors provides Sunactive Fe in HemoFactors, a great tasting chewable tablet providing all of

the benefi ts of this unique form of iron.

Iron defi ciency is a common nutri-ent defi ciency. Iron plays a central role in the hemoglobin molecule of our red blood cells where it functions in transporting oxygen throughout the body. Iron also functions in sev-eral key enzymes in energy production. Often the dietary intake of iron does not adequately satisfy the body’s needs. Th is is particularly common in menstruating women, who lose iron every month, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Vegetarians are at an increased risk for iron defi ciency, since their iron intake is often low. Furthermore, since adequate stomach acid is needed to absorb iron, absorption tends to decline with age due to decreasing stomach acid levels. Th is puts the elderly at great risk for iron defi ciency, as well as people who frequently use antacid medications.

Anemia is a condition in which the blood is lacking in red blood cells or hemoglobin.

Iron dependent enzymes involved in energy production are the fi rst to be aff ected by low iron levels, which is one reason iron defi ciency causes

fatigue. Th at being said, don’t assume you need an iron supple-

ment just because your

energy is fl agging! A blood test that measures serum ferritin, the iron storage protein, is the best way to determine iron defi ciency. Individuals that are at low risk for iron defi ciency (like men and non-men-struating women) shouldn’t take iron “just because”.

GOOD Nutrition

The Facts About Going VegetarianBecoming a vegetarian may not be the easiest transition; however, eliminating meat and meat products from our diet holds numerous benefi ts for our overall health, the health of animals and the health of our planet. Most conventionally raised animals are subjected to incredibly inhumane treatment, the likes of which would disturb even the most dedi-cated meat eater. On factory farms animals are squished into fi lthy, windowless sheds where they will spend the rest of their lives. During the slaughter process cows are often skinned and dismembered while they are still alive. Shortly after birth, piglets are castrated, have pieces of fl esh cut off of their bodies and their tails removed without the use of any painkillers. Chickens spend their entire lives cooped up in tiny cages without ever seeing the light of day.

Not only is factory farming inhumane it is a major environmental pollutant. Factory farming leads to deforestation, an increase in greenhouse gases and wasted land. Many of the environmental issues that we as a civilization face today are the result of fac-tory farming and increased meat consump-tion. According to the United Nations, meat consumption creates more greenhouse gasses than cars, planes, ships and trains combined. Chickens, turkeys, pigs and cows in factory farms produce billions of tons of drug laced feces each year, which frequently spills over into neighboring waterways and is the cause of death for thousands of fi sh and aquatic species. Because it can take over a hundred pounds of grain to produce one pound of meat, many habitats are de-stroyed in order to plant a single crop. Over 90% of the Amazon rainforest that has been cleared since 1970 has been for global meat production.

For humans, reducing or eliminating meat from our diets can help lower the risk of heart disease, certain cancers, stroke and obesity. Although meat does provide nutrients that are necessary for life, there are other plant based sources where these nutrients can be found.

Th ere are a number of vegetarian recipes that

can be accessed on line or found in vegetar-ian cookbooks. If family cooking is a concern, try introducing vegetarian options slowly to help your family adjust to a diff erent diet.. If you are the fi rst person in your family to try vegetarianism, try cooking a vegetarian meal and then adding protein for your family members. Converting to a vegetarian diet doesn’t have to be diffi cult, and the planet, its animals, and your body will thank you!

Not everyone is ready or able to switch to a strictly vegetarian diet and that’s ok! Th ere are a number of ways to be an informed and responsible carnivore! Do your research before purchasing meat products. Th ere are a variety of ethically raised meats available on the market today. Grass fed is a commonly used term to distinguish those cattle that are raised on a grass diet. Th ese cows do not eat any grains, or GMO feeds, and are not given

any hormones, antibiotics, or animal byprod-ucts in their feed. Th e cows are free to roam a grass pasture where they can express natural behaviors and grow at a normal rate. Raising cattle on pastures reduces CO2 emissions, improves soil quality, and preserves natural habitats. Certifi ed organic beef is always grass fed because of certifi cation standards. When choosing chicken, opt for certifi ed organic if possible, as this certifi cation means that the chickens are raised using certifi ed organic feed and untreated drinking water. Th e chickens must have access to a pesticide free pasture for a minimum of six hours a day, weather permitting. If organic chicken is not available, choose free run, as these chickens do not live in cages but are allowed to run free either in a covered barn or outdoors.

Nature’s Fare Markets does not sell meat produced in factory farms.

Directions

Caramelized Onions

Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions. Cook until onions just turn translucent. Reduce heat to medium low and cook until caramelized and brown, about 40 – 45 minutes, stirring often. Add salt and pepper to taste.TIP: If the onions start to stick, add a small splash of water.

Garbanzo Bean Patties

Drain and rinse garbanzos. In a medium mixing bowl, mash garbanzos with a fork or potato masher. Add remaining ingredients (except for olive oil) and mix until well combined. Form into four 1" thick patties. Refrigerate several hours to set up the patties, or freeze until ready to use. Heat a heavy skillet over high heat. Add olive oil. When skillet is hot, add burger patties. Reduce heat to medium, and cook patties for approximately 5 minutes each side, until crisp and cooked through. TIP: You can use a grill for this recipe, but you must pre-cook the patties in a pan, and fi nish them on the grill; otherwise they tend to fall apart.

Serve the garbanzo bean patties on toasted wheat buns topped with the caramelized onions. Garnish with lettuce, tomato, yogurt, lemon, sprouts, avocado...whatever you like.

GOOD Fitness

RHONDA CATT specializes in athletic conditioning at the professional level as well as for the weekend athlete. Rhonda encourages clients to be life-fi t rather than gym-fi t and believes that reducing dysfunction & improving quality of movement is the key to better performance.

THIS SUMMER

GET OUT & MOVE

by Rhonda Catt

Th e amazing summer weather fi nds many people outdoors escaping on outdoor fi t-ness adventures: hikes, biking, running, and many more! Great job to everyone who sees the value in moving their body and enjoying the beautiful area we live in. Th e human body is meant to move! We need to “de-fuzz” in order to stay healthy. Lack of movement creates compensation and sends us on a journey of unhealthi-ness and unhappiness.

So, what may happen for some during this

extra summer activity, is that an underly-ing dysfunction starts to sneak up. Slight aches and pains start to manifest. Some of the main reasons for this is a lack of variety in movement patterns – such as continued long distance running, a lack of mobility, or stability in joints.

Exploring an optimal amount of variety of movements aids in recovery and helps increase movement effi ciency. What does this mean? Take a look at children and how well they move. How they can jump,

1 Lay on the fl oor and place a pool noodle or rolled up towel under the upper back area.

2 Perform mini crunches. Be sure to keep the chin tucked in and prevent the low back from extending.

3 If you can, try extending overtop of the pool noodle to increase Thoracic spine extension.

4 For more of a challenge, if you can maintain a “chin tuck” position and a neutral low back, extend far enough back until the back of your head touches the fl oor.

HEALTHY T-SPINE MOBILITY EXERCISE: Pool Noodle Crunches

squat, skip or crawl. Now, see how well you can perform the same patterns! Th ese patterns are lost as we age because of our lack of movement variability.

Also, over time we may lose adequate joint mobility due to repetitive movement pat-terns such as sitting all day at work. What happens to that person who then decides to increase their running distance? Areas that are meant to move may lack mobil-ity so other areas try to make up for it! How can we reduce dysfunction and stay healthy through the summer? It’s a long list but one easy exercise that the majority can benefi t from is simple and eff ective with little or no cost! All you need is a rolled up towel or pool noodle.

THE BUZZ

ON INSECT REPELLENTS

Th e onset of warmer weather brings us outdoor activities like hiking, camping, sports and picnics. Unfortunately it also brings with it mosquitoes, black fl ies, and bees. To reduce the number of itches and ouches you experience this summer, try a natural insect repellent with active ingredients like essential oils.

cases insomnia, mood disturbances and impaired cognitive functions. Studies have shown that DEET inhibits the activity of a central nervous system enzyme in both mammals and insects, which, in serious cases, can cause paralysis and asphyxiation.

eff ective for up to two hours of use, and 98% eff ective for up to three hours of use. Natural formulas are allergy tested, safe for sensitive skin, and most are sweat resistant. Products that contain lemon eucalyptus oil or citronella oil are most eff ective against biting insects like mosquitoes and fl ies. Geranium oil has shown to be most eff ec-tive at thwarting insects like lice and ticks.

Instead of DEET, try using a product that contains essential oils which

will discourage insects from invading your space. Lemon eucalyptus, geranium,

thyme, clove, citronella and neem are all oils that have insecticidal compounds that are safe for use on human skin. Some natu-ral brands like All Terrain have tested 100%

It is easy to make your own natural insect repellent by

adding the essential oils to a carrier oil or alcohol – water will not work as the oils will not blend. A good rule of thumb is to main-tain a ratio of fi ve to ten percent essential oils to carrier oil or alcohol.

Most conventional insect repellents contain the active ingredient DEET, which is an abbreviation for N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide. DEET was originally created for use as a pesticide; however the United States army soon adopted the chemical for use in jungle warfare in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. It is a yellowish oil that can be applied to skin or clothing and can be quite helpful in repelling a majority of

insects. Although eff ective at repelling insects, DEET has been known

to cause skin irritations, and in some

Summer is full of friends, family and fun, and shouldn’t be spent trying to avoid

insects and bites, so give these natural repellents a try!

An oldie but a goodie; citronella works great in candles and as a natural bug repellent in sprays.

HEALTHY

HORMONE BALANCE

Hormones are important and powerful chemical messengers that are responsible for thousands of reactions in the body. Healthy hormone balance is absolutely essential during a woman’s reproductive years. Stress, aging, exposure to pesticides, man-made chemicals, too much or too little exercise, or improper nutrition can all aff ect the delicate balance of hormones.

One of the most prominent causes of hormone imbalance related symptoms is excessive estrogen exposure from estrogens that are made inside the body and estrogens from outside the body including the birth control pill, pesticides and other environ-mental toxins. Symptoms of this imbalance include PMS, endometriosis, uterine fi -broids, fi brocystic breast disease, heavy and painful periods, hormonal acne and more…

EstroSense™ is a unique formula that helps maintain healthy hormone balance. EstroSense contains all natural ingredi-ents including Calcium-d-glucarate, indole-3-carbinol, Sulforaphane, Milk Th istle seed extract, DIM, Tumeric, Lycopene, Rosemary and Green Tea extract. Th ese ingredients

combined provide support for healthy hormone metabolism by promoting liver detoxifi cation and excretion of harmful xenoestrogens. In addition, the powerful antioxidants in EstroSense have anti-carcinogenic properties thus protecting the body from environmental insult as well as reducing one’s risk of cancer.

Every day in practice I also see patients who complain of unrelenting fatigue. Th ey wake up un-refreshed and drag them-selves through each day. Th ese patients feel unmotivated and irritable. Th ey also have an incredibly hard time losing weight. Even though they may exercise vigorously and eat healthy, they just can’t seem to shed a pound!

Do these symptoms sound familiar? If so, you might have what’s called Adrenal Fatigue.

Th e adrenal glands are two small glands that sit on top of each kidney

by Dr. Marita Schauch, BSc, ND

and are the body’s main stress responders. Th e body typically responds to physical and emotional stress by producing adrenal hor-mones such as epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol as a coping mechanism.

When we trigger the stress response too often, problems arise as the stress hor-mones are continuously pumped out and the body becomes depleted and exhausted.

Th e good news is that there are steps that you can take to optimize your adrenal func-tion to prevent the deteriorating aff ects of adrenal fatigue including exercise, relaxa-tion techniques, restoring sleep and reduc-ing refi ned sugars, caff eine, alcohol and pro-cessed foods. Also look for AdrenaSense®, an adrenal gland supporting formula with Rhodiola, Suma, Siberian ginseng,

Schisandra and Ashwagandha. AdrenaSense helps reduce stress,

improve energy and promote restful sleep.

I recommend Adrena-Sensefor Adrenal Fatigue and stress, and EstroSense

for hormone balance to patients in my practice.

Glow on, glow on!

Most of the candles on the market are made from paraffi n wax, which is derived from petroleum also contain synthetic fragrances which are also derived from petroleum. Less common are candles that are made from plant oils such as soybean oil, palm oil, hemp oil, or from beeswax. Research has shown that when paraffi n wax candles are burned for over fi ve hours inside a chamber there are measurable amounts of chemicals emitted. Experts found varying levels of cancer-causing toluene and ben-zene, as well as other hydrocarbon chemicals called alkanes and alkenes, which are components of gasoline and can irritate respiratory tracts and trigger asthma.

Chemicals that reduce your indoor air quality aren’t the only problem asso-ciated with paraffi n candles. Previous research into candle pollution found paraffi n that candles can emit ultrafi ne, lung-damaging particulate matter that’s capable of penetrating deep into the lungs. Th e harmful eff ects can be long lasting since candle soot can deposit on furniture, in carpeting, and in walls.

Nature’s Fare Markets proudly off ers a variety of locally harvested beeswax and non-GMO soy candles.

Enjoy candles without polluting your indoor airCONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS

Paraffi n candles release chemicals because of improper combustion; meaning that the fl ame doesn’t get hot enough to burn the oil completely, and chemi-cals are released as a result.

Beeswax candles burn at lower temperatures and don’t have that problem. They also add a hint of sweet honey aroma to the air without any added chemical fragrances. Some people believe that the negative ions in the beeswax actually improve your indoor air quality as the candles burn.

DON’T BURN GMOS OR RAINFORESTS

Many soy candles are made from genetically modifi ed (GMO) soybeans, which decrease biodi-versity and can contaminate organic soybean crops. Palm oil, another vegetable wax used in candles, comes from palm tree plantations, for which rainfor-ests were burned or clear-cut.

Know the source of your product and ask questions.

CHOOSE NATURAL SCENTS

Even beeswax and plant wax candles can be scented with synthetic fragrances, which can con-tain phthalates that can interfere with your hormone system. Phthalates can also build up in household dust and linger for long periods.

If you’re going for scented candles look for ones that are scented with natural essential oils rather than chemical fragrances.

BURN SAFELY

Excess soot from candles reduces air quality and unattended candles can start fi res.

Keep wicks trimmed to approximately ¼" to cut down on any soot that may come from candles – soy wax, beeswax or otherwise. Also, keep candles out of drafty windows where drapes may come into contact with the fl ame. Most importantly, never leave a burning candle unattended.

Candles help set the mood in your home, and can add a sense of warmth and

relaxation. However, there are some ingredients in many candles that add

harmful pollutants to your homes air quality.
