The Way of the Cross: Great Lent

Every year, the Church – our Mother who gave us

birth, sustains us on our way to eternity and she guides

us in the footsteps of our Savior. More specifically, she

helps us not only to live again teachings and miracles,

but to identify ourselves more truly with the way or the

mode of life of Christ. Sometimes, we are asked: Why

do we have to undergo these spiritual exercises, year in

and year out?

First, we must understand that through the Holy

Baptism, we have entered into a new way of life: the

spiritual way, of Christ. This kind of life or way is the

means by which we let us be transformed from an old

being, corrupt by sin, into a new man, that is renewed by

the Holy Spirit. Then, each time when we embark again

on feasts or fasts, we strive to identify ourselves not

only with the teachings of the Lord, but with Christ

Himself, Who, in this practical experience, comes to us

and strengthens us. So, when fasting, we make room to a

life that is dependent of God’s Word, more so than of

our biological needs. When we fast for 40 days, we are

not alone, but with Him. We follow Christ, who in the

desert defied and defeated the devil’s temptations. This

way, with Christ’s help, the Lent or the way of the cross

is turned into joy.

This year, after a preparation of three weeks, for

the Orthodox Christians, the seven weeks of Great Lent

will begin on March 11. Fasting is for the strong and it

is complex. It includes participation in the evening and

morning prayer of the Church; the good fight against

sins; acts of mercy and meaningful sacrifices for the

support of the Church. Then, we should have a deep and

sincere Confession. The crowning of all this is the par-

taking of the Holy Eucharist. Thus, the way of the cross,

becomes the way to the joy and light of the Resurrection

(Holy Pascha). May God help us!

Calea Crucii: Postul Paștilor

În fiecare an, Biserica-mama noastră care ne-a re-

născut și ne susține în călătoria spre veșnicie, ne poartă pe

urmele Mântuitorului. Astfel, ea ne ajută nu doar să re-

trăim învățături și minuni, ci să ne identificăm cu adevărat

cu “calea” sau modul de viață al Domnului. Suntem

uneori întrebați: De ce trebuie să trecem prin aceste

exerciții duhovnicești, an după an?

Mai întâi, trebuie să înțelegem că prin Sfântul Botez

noi am intrat într-un nou mod de viață: cel duhovnicesc,

adică cel al lui Hristos. Acest mod de trăire sau “cale” este

modalitatea prin Care ne lăsăm transformați din omul cel

vechi, plin de păcate, în cel nou, care este înnoit de Duhul

Sfânt. Apoi, de fiecare dată când retrăim praznicele sau

posturile, noi ne identificăm nu numai cu învățăturile

Domnului, ci cu Însuși Hristos, deoarece în trăirea prac-

tică El vine la noi și ne întărește. Postind, facem loc unei

trăiri dependente de Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu, mai mult

decât de cele biologice. Postind vreme de 40 de zile, noi

nu mai suntem singuri, ci cu El. Îl urmăm pe Hristos, care

a postit și a înfruntat pe diavolul, biruindu-I ispitirile. Ast-

fel, cu ajutorul Domnului, calea crucii, este preschimbată

în bucurie. După șapte săptămâni, deprinderea noastră este

formată și noi vom rămâne pe calea ce bună, a bucuriei.

În acest an, pentru noi, Creștinii ortodocși, cele șapte

săptămâni ale Postului Mare, încep după o pregatire de

trei săptămâni, luni, 11 martie. Postul este pentru cei tari

și este complex. El include participarea la slujbele de

seară sau de dimineață ale Bisericii; lupta cea bună contra

păcatului, citiri sfinte; fapte de milostenie și jertfe reale

pentru întreținerea bisericii. Suntem chemați să ne

lepădăm de păcate prin Spovedanie sinceră. Încununarea

Postului este, împărtășirea cu Sf. Trup și Sânge ale lui

Hristos și, desigur, intrarea cu vrednicie în lumina și bucu-

ria Învierii. Să ne ajute Dumnezeu!

GREAT LENT

Beginning with Monday, March 11, we enter the

Holy Pascha Great Lent. The following foods are

NOT allowed: meat, fish, cheese and eggs. Also, there

are NO parties during this period! In the first week of

the Lent we will have the Canon of St. Andrew of

Crete every evening at 6 PM.

Ne trebuie crenguțe înmugurite de salcie pentru Sf. Liturghie a

Intrării Domnului Nostru Iisus Hristos în Ierusalim (Florii). Dacă

aveți acest tip de salcie în grădină, vă rugăm să le țineți sub

atenție, sau să ne aduceți câte ramuri puteți la biroul parohial

sau la biserică. Noi le putem ține la rece pentru prezervare. Vă

rugăm să ne spuneți dacă ne puteți ajuta. (Ziua de Florii este pe

21 aprilie).
