For us as Baptists, Believer's Baptism is one of the most significant acts that we can take in our walk with Christ. It is a symbolic act that reflects what He did for us. As we go under the water, our old self is buried with Him. We come out of the water a new creation, forgiven with the promise of a new life. It is beautiful to see as people come forward to express their faith in Jesus. On June 10th we will witness several of our friends entering the waters of baptism. They include Arnold Hall, Erica Ballesteros, Alyssa Murray, Robert Burnside, Zachary Stanton, Tim Lynn and David Whipple. We also hope to welcome them into membership along with Hillery Stanton, Cathy Burnside, Patricia Anderson, and Richard Chipperfield. It is going to be a special day.
Wednesday Nights Beginning June 20th
Join us for a light dinner and conversation on the subject of Grace. Come at 5:30. The grill will be on. Or come at 6:30 p.m. just for the study. We will be reading through Max Lucado’s book, “Grace!”

Fifteen of us went to Chris Tomlin’s “Worship Night in America” on May 5th.
A Gift for Habitat… Work begins on the culvert out back….
With hats on their heads, we celebrate Mother’s Day. It’s a tradition at CBC!
Another wonderful trip to the Sight & Sound Theater. This time we saw “Jesus!”
Dear Friends,
Last month I had the opportunity to sit back and reflect on the race we’ve been running these last 12 months. For some of you it truly feels like a race. Just look at the photos to the right and you’ll get a sample of the wonderful opportunities we’ve had. There was a trip to Lancaster, PA where we saw a musical production titled, “Jesus.” Thank you Dorothy McClure and Agnes Trebesacci! Oh, what fun! You made it happen. Another group traveled to Hartford, CT to see Chris Tomlin’s “Worship Night in America.” It was inspirational. We celebrated Mother’s Day with our annual Mother Daughter Banquet. Over eighty ladies enjoyed the turkey dinner Skip Terwilliger and his crew put together. Afterwards the ladies were entertained by the dancers from Luis Pabon Dance Arts Center in Norwich. On Sunday the ladies pulled out their finest for the annual “Hat Day” photo. We also presented a check to Colin Penney, the new Executive Director of the South County Habitat for Humanity. It was a down payment that suggested we’d like to do more with them in 2018/19. One of the by-products of our Mission Trip to Houston was the fact that we met some new friends from the other churches. Tom Roy, from Dunn’s Corners, ended up having a conversation with Ron Rodehorst about the sinking culvert in our parking lot while we were in Texas. This past week Tom came over with his equipment and is working on fixing it for us. That’s a Holy Spirit connection at work. As I look ahead I see a wonderful summer here at church. Worship will move to 9:30 a.m. on Father’s Day. That means we can worship in the morning and then enjoy the sun or the beach. We also add the Avondale Chapel series to our menu and a smorgasbord of preachers and special music to enjoy. This offers an even earlier option for worship because they meet at 8:00 a.m. Add in our Father’s Day Car Show in June, a trip to the ballpark in July, a midweek Bible study on Grace, the chance to be “Shipwrecked” and then rescued by Jesus in our Annual Vacation Bible School, a visit from Ronnie and Becky Short and the girls, and you have the recipe for a blessing. So I hope you will come along for the ride. You will be blessed. See you in church. Cal

For your convenience, there are a couple easy online giving options. You can add CBC to your bank’s Bill Payment site and the bank will print and mail your check to the church. Also, you scan the code on the right from your phone to access our online giving app, to give from either your bank account or a debit/credit card. The app uses the same security as bank web sites, so your personal information is secure. Also, it allows you to schedule your donations in advance, so ‘once and it’s done’! Please take a look and see how online giving can make giving easier for you! We appreciate your continued support of God’s work at CBC.
Prayer Team
Now that spring is here, the Trustees would like to express our support for the efforts of the Board of Christian Education to encourage sponsorship of the Vacation Bible School program this summer. Sponsoring a child with a $15 sponsorship will help keep our VBS program one of the very best. We have already seen encouraging results from this effort.
Chair-Board of Trustees Frederick C. Eckel
Our giving in April continued to exceed our plan, but lower dividends and interest from our endowment caused the total income to fall short of our plan. Also, our expenses were slightly higher than planned, resulting in a negative balance. This should be only a temporary situation, though, and our strong financial position should continue for the rest of the year. Thank you for your generous support!
Inspiring Quotes by Mark Batterson, an American pastor and author. 1. All of us love miracles. We just don’t like being in situations where we need one.
2. Sometimes the power of prayer is the power to carry on. It doesn’t always change your circumstances, but it gives you the strength to walk through them.
3. The same voice that spoke order into chaos at the dawn of creation is still doing it. He can speak order into the chaos of your life.
4. One prayer can change the course of history.
5. Faith is the willingness to look foolish.

Stewardship
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL July 9—July 13, 9:00 AM to 12:15 PM
Two small boys went into the dentist’s office one day and waited for the dentist to get through with his appointment. When he came into the waiting room, the older of the two boys spoke up. “Doctor, I want a tooth taken out, and I don’t want any gas, and I don’t want it deadened because we’re in a hurry.” The doctor smiled and said, “Well, you’re quite a brave young man. You want a tooth pulled, and you don’t want any gas, and you don’t want it deadened.” And the little boy said, “That’s right, ‘cause we’re in a hurry.” “Well, okay,” said the dentist, “but tell me, which tooth is it?” And the little boy turned to his smaller friend and said, “Show him your tooth, Albert!” The world is full of people like that, isn’t it? People who want to see things happen and get things done; but, who let someone else pay the price and to deal with the consequences. That’s not the way it works. We have to get into the dentist’s chair ourselves. We have to recognize that giving of our time, talent and treasure to our church is not something someone else does. It is an effort we all need to support. It is everyone’s responsibility.

Thanks Dad by Sylvia Pierce
June is the month to honor your dad Thank him for seeing you through the good and the bad
You might not remember his bouncing you on his knee You will remember the rescue from being stuck in the tree
Don’t forget that big beaming proud smile As he taught you to drive that very first mile
Remember to thank your Heavenly Father for each blessing and gift
Even when your mind and body wanted to drift Honor each dad as they are willing to sacrifice
To give you those experienced words of wisdom and advice.

New Additions to the Library
Christian Life
Counter Culture – David Platt The author makes a “compassionate call” for Christians to faithfully follow Christ into the cultural battlefield of today’s society. He shows how Christians can take an active stand on such hot-button issues as immigration, same-sex marriage, racism, abortion, and other challenges confronting Christians today. The author challenges Christians to live out the Gospel message with “conviction, courage and compassion in the midst of a culture that is drifting further from the truth every day.” Religion If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise of American Liberty - Eric Metaxas Metaxas, an award-winning author, details the founding of America and the expectations of its citizens in the support of the American form of government. The “we the people” of the Constitution. He contends that America’s future is of concern because the people are not meeting their collective responsibility of keeping the “flame of liberty” alive. Central to his argument is his belief in the Golden Triangle of Freedom; the triangle being composed of Freedom, Virtue, and Faith. The basic function of the triangle being that Freedom requires Virtue, Virtue requires Faith, and Faith requires Freedom. All three legs support each other. If one of the legs of the triangle is removed, the whole structure ceases to exist. The author expands on these concepts and other important factors dealing with the unique political experiment that gave birth to American and its democratic form of government. Bible Study 30 Days To Understanding the Bible – Max Anders The author believes that the book can be an aid for those who are beginning a study of the Bible, as well as a help for the established student to organize and expand on his/her knowledge. The book is organized around the “Ten Great Subjects of the Bible,” including the Holy Spirit, Jesus, Man, Sin, and Salvation, etc. Numerous charts and graphs assist the reader in putting the Bible’s people and facts together in their proper chronological order. The author claims that these objectives can be accomplished by an individual spending fifteen minutes of study a day for thirty days. Regardless of the time commitment, the book contains information which can enhance anyone’s knowledge and understanding of Scripture. These Books and other recent additions can be found in the Library Corner in Fellowship Hall. Visit the Library located on the Nursery School Hallway – Ground Floor. CD copies of Sunday Worship services are available in the Media Section of the library. Contact the Church office if you would like to receive a copy on a regular basis in the mail.

FOUR GARDENS = SALVATION
John 20:11 (RSV) Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. 20:14 She turned around and saw Jesus but did not know Him.
20:15 She supposed Him to be the gardener.
Spring has arrived bringing the days in which we plan and plant our gardens. Following this will be the days in which with loving care we will tend the growth. When the proper number of days for the planning, planting and tending have been accomplished, we will gather in the harvest to be enjoyed and shared with others. It may be coincidental that during this time I found in Father Paul Scalia’s book of Essays “That Nothing May Be Lost” an essay describing some gardens mentioned in the Bible. Father Scalia succinctly explains in his essay entitled “Four Gardens” some viewpoints on the gardens of Eden, Gethsemane, resurrection and the human soul that I had never considered before. I found them both interesting and compelling and I hope you will also.
In reading through this essay, I find some key words around which the essay appears to have been built—words such as: Salvation - Order - Beauty - Life - Rebellion (sin) - Restoration - Redemption - Resurrection - Divine Gardener - Grace - Et. Al. May the gardens of your lives be fulfilling to you and pleasing to God. - John Macomber
Four Gardens
“Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark” (Jn 20:1; cf. Mt 28:1; Mk 16:1-2; Lk 24:1). She comes to a garden. We know that from the last words of the Passion read on Good Friday that the tomb of our Lord was in a garden (Jn 19:41). This is not an unimportant detail, because salvation history can be understood as a story of gardens. We find three essential elements in a garden: order, beauty and life. Order sets a garden apart from the wilderness. Its boundaries and design establish it as a specific place unlike any other. Second, a garden has beauty—a diversity of flowers and plants, colors, sizes and shapes that please the eye. Finally, a garden has life. Plants grow and bear fruit, and animals find their territory a pleasing place to live. This is what God desired for us in that first garden, the Garden of Eden: order, beauty, and life. Order, not just of the Garden, but of our own lives. He established us in a harmonious (well-ordered) relationship with Him, which bestowed in turn a harmony within ourselves and with others, the integration of soul and body, man and woman, man and creation. Likewise the beauty of that first garden was not of the plants and flowers but of our souls, the surpassing beauty of the only creature created in His image and likeness. And He bestowed life there as well—the unending life with God. By his sin Adam rejected the Gardener and lost the goods of the Garden. We have lost order, beauty and life. Rebellion against God has thrown His creation into disarray. We now find soul pitted against body, man against woman, and all of creation at odds with man. It has brought the ugliness and horror of sin into the world. Most of all, it has brought death into the world, death in the place of life. In a second garden our Lord began the restoration, the redemption; Jesus went “Where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered” (Jn. 18:1; cf Mt. 26:30; Mk 14:26; Lk 22:39). He entered the garden of Gethsemane to undo the rebellion of the Garden of Eden. In that garden he took upon himself all the disorder ugliness, and death that sin brought into the world. The entirety of it rushed upon and into Him. “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down upon the ground” (Lk22:44). He Who is Beauty Itself became the Man of sorrow. He “who know no sin” became sin for us (2Cor 5:21). Life itself became death. In a third garden our Lord continues His work—by rising from the dead. How fitting that His tomb should be in a garden—to complete the restoration of God’s original plan. Indeed, when she first sees Him, Mary Magdalene takes our Lord to be the gardener (Jn.20:15). And in a certain sense, He is. He rises as the divine Gardener, to restore order, beauty and life. He completes His work in a fourth garden: the human soul. He desires to enter our souls by His grace and dwell within as the divine Gardener. He desires to reestablish within us His gifts of order, beauty and life intended from the beginning—order, to heal that division and discord within us that produces all the division and discord outside of us; beauty, to rid us of the ugliness of sin and grant us the glory of His children: and life, that our hearts become lively and life-giving. On Easter Day Mary Magdalene found Him in a garden. He rose in a garden so that we can in turn find Him within us, establishing His new garden of grace.

WHO REALLY BROKE DOWN THE WALLS OF JERICHO?
The pastor visited a class of boys one Sunday morning to find out what they were learning during Bible study. “Who broke down the walls of Jericho?” he asked. “Not me, sir,” each boy replied. “Is this typical of your class?” the pastor asked the teacher. “These are honest boys and I believe them,” the teacher replied. “I don’t believe they would do a thing like that.” Frustrated and discouraged, the pastor told the Sunday school director about his visit to the class and the response of the boys and their teacher. “Pastor, I have known that teacher and those boys for a long time,” the director replied. “If they said they didn’t do it, that’s good enough for me.” Next, the minister brought the matter before the Official Board of the church. They discussed it for two hours, then reported: “Pastor, we see no need to get upset about a little thing like this. Let’s just pay for any damages involved and charge it to general church maintenance.”
