Winni’s Local History Page The Earl, his mistress – and the murderous young

clergyman from GosportThere’s nothing quite like a scandal to grab the attention of the media, and the imagination of the great British public. And if that scandal involves a crime of passion involving well known celebrities, then everyone is happily mesmerised for quite some considerable time.

Back in the year 1779, the sensational murder of Martha Ray, a well known socialite, who just happened to be the mistress of the Earl of Sandwich, caused quite a stir,

at the same time evoking not a little sympathy for the perpetrator of this dastardly crime.

Martha Ray, the long time mistress of the Earl of Sandwich, and mother of nine of his children, was shot dead on the steps of the Covent Garden Theatre. The man responsible, James Hackman, was in fact a young clergyman, born and bred in Gosport.

Hackman had, by all accounts, developed an overwhelming crush on Martha, after meeting her some years earlier. Although it’s not clear whether she ever

reciprocated these feelings, it is known that he proposed marriage to her, which she turned down.

Hardly surprising, considering she was the partner of one of the most powerful and influential men of that period. Indeed, the earl became the First Sea Lord on more than one occasion, and will forever be remembered as the man who gave his name to one of our favourite snacks.

James Hackman, on the other hand, had made very little impact on the world, before that fateful day. The son of a naval lieutenant, James had walked away from life in the army. It has been reported that, when faced with the inevitable prospect of going to war, he decided he might be more suited to the quiet life of a clergyman.

Despite the fact Hackman committed cold bloodied murder, opinion of that time seemed to be very much on his side. The Earl of Sandwich was an unpopular figure. Martha Ray was considered by some to be a lady of ill repute, whereas James Hackman was perceived to be just a poor young clergyman, driven insane by unrequited love.

Unfortunately, the judge at his subsequent trial decided against the plea of temporary insanity, and sentenced James Hackman to death. He was hung at Tyburn, in front of hundreds of onlookers, on April 19th 1779.

Hypnosis You may be surprised to know that this is a very common state which everybody automatically drifts in an out of from time to time. The average person achieves this state approximately 200 times per day. You know how it is when you get thoroughly lost in a beautiful piece of music, or a good book, or a daydream. Your attention is completely captured and everyday reality fades into the background as your mind carries you away to a different world of the imagination. In fact we all go through a similar phase just before we go to sleep at night and that ‘drowsy’ feeling you have in the mornings. When we are not quite awake,nor quite asleep.

Hypnotistism A Hypnotist uses hypnosis for amusement, in a show, at the expense of the person who is going to be ‘hypnotised’, The audience feels no long term positive gain, although of course laughter is a great healer! Hypnotists use some of the techniques that a hypnotherapist will use. For instance, suggestion, trance and visualizations, but that is where the similarity ends.

Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy which enables the therapist to enlist the help of the conscious and unconscious/ subconscious mind. The emphasis is goal orientated, and allows the focus of attention internally, re accessing resources, and creating new associations, patterns of thinking and behaving.

Clinical Hypnotherapy Clinical Hypnotherapy is very different to any other practice of hypnosis. This is a therapy which treats Clinical Ailments by accessing the unconscious mind, and facilitating change. Clinical Hypnotherapy can be used to treat anything clinical from Irritable Bowel Syndrome to Depression, to Deep Relaxation, Confidence, Self Esteem & Ego Boosting. It can also be used for Child Birth, Smoking Cessation, Weight Loss, Headaches, Migraines, Allergies, Sinus issues, Colds and Flu, PMS, all Mental & Emotional issues, Fears & Phobias, OCD and many many more.

The approach differs from person to person. I use various methods including Hypnotherapy (clinical only), Psychology, Neuro Linguistic Programming and Rapid Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

It is impossible to give a ‘success rate’ as it all depends on the client and how their brain works and their psychology of the issue/s. No Clinical Hypnotherapist is able to provide a guarantee. Everybody is different. The Clinical Hypnotherapist is there to facilitate change in the client by giving positive suggestions.

Rambling Rose visits the Gopsort WI, and discovers it’s not all about Jam and JerusalemIt was with mixed feelings that I accepted an offer to visit the Gosport branch of the Women’s Institute, despite the runaway success of the film Calendar Girls.

Any preconceived ideas I may have harboured about this very worthwhile organisation were speedily dispatched within the first five minutes.

I fully expected just a handful of women to arrive at the Stoke Road Methodist Hall, one Tuesday evening in March. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to find myself in the midst of a least fifty to sixty

laughing, chattering ladies.

A comparatively new group, at least by the standards of the WI organisation, which has been going for over ninety years, the Gosport WI is only five years old, but is growing rapidly.

And it’s not hard to see why. Newcomers, and there were quite a few, are made to feel very welcome, with no pressure to join, or take part in any of the evening’s activities.

Mairi and Donna, two very young and, very trendy young mums who were on their second visit, explained why they were just about to join. ‘We believe in the WI values,’ they agreed. ‘We like

the idea you’re not tied down to anything, it’s only once a month. It’s also a chance for us to get out, and mix with women of all ages, which you don’t get if you sit in a pub.’

Although the traditional activities of the WI are still present, today’s Women’s Institute has come a long way since it came to Britain in 1915. Jam and cake, thankfully, still feature strongly, indeed, many charities across the world have benefitted immensely from the sale of these delicious home made products.

Both Gillian Norman, the president of the Gosport branch, and Carole Rudin, the treasurer, regularly hold fund raising coffee mornings, at home, in aid of a variety of charities, where all members are welcome. Gillian also plans a Curry Day, in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund, which will take place on the 27th May , between 12 and 2pm.

Coffee mornings, curry days, activities, events; the group are always busy looking for new and different ways to enjoy themselves. A recent outing to Brighton involved shopping, and a theatre trip to see the Full Monty, (there were no spare seats on the coach that day!) Why not call in yourself, to the next monthly meeting?
