THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES… This was the theme for
the final 50th Anniversary Event for RTO/ERO District 14 Niaga-ra held on November 8/18. This was a celebration of so many
memories made over the past 50 years of the RTO/ERO organi-zation. At the Fall Festival Luncheon, we invited once more the
members who have celebrated their 90+ birthdays in this pre-sent year to be our guests. They were introduced, received cor-sages and boutonnieres, and acknowledged with a rousing cho-
rus of Happy Birthday and applause. One of the Founding mem-bers of District 14 Niagara and President, Wilf Tanner, was also recognized, as well as
all of the Presidents who have served the District. We were very pleased to have as a special guest, Mr. Tanners’ son, Bill Tanner, who was celebrating his 90th birthday.
The Executive has worked diligently this past year to remember and celebrate the
many achievements of District 14 Niagara. The Grapevine logo was featured on “carry bags” and distributed at several events and activities. Our members tell us that they
appreciate the bags for their usefulness and that they are excellent conversation start-ers. It gives us an opportunity to promote our organization and invite others to look
into the many benefits that are offered by our plan. We displayed the RTO/ERO Dis-trict 14 Niagara logo on a special vintage of red and white wine for the 50th Anniversary.
We shared these wine bottles at our luncheons and events as gifts to our members and we presented them to speakers who shared information with us on serious topics and
issues that are challenging our members today. We held workshops on Elder Abuse, Frauds and Scams and Wills and Power of Attorney. Our 50th Anniversary was highlight-
ed by a Life After Retirement Showcase event held in October 2018. Many of our mem-bers have hobbies, artistic pursuits and small business ventures that engage them in their next chapter of living. They brought in their wares and displayed their information.
Members were invited to attend free of charge and enjoy a complimentary beverage and delicious buffet of canapes and desserts. It was a lively exchange of ideas and a
shared appreciation for the many talents and entrepreneurial skills of our members.
We have invested in brand new banners for our District that will be displayed at
workshops and events in the coming years. Again, the banners focus on RTO/ERO as a
thriving organization that strives to service each and every member. The definition of who we are as a group is broadening because we are “opening the door” to all educa-
tional sector workers. We are inviting caretakers, early education workers, bus drivers, secretaries and others who have worked in our education system to join us. The next
50 years will bring change and even more opportunities for RTO/ERO seniors to enjoy health benefits, travel experiences and social gatherings that promote well-being and
collegial connections. Let us create together the next 50 years of great MEMORIES.

GOODWILL
Winter is here and with it comes the time for staying put
and warm and reminiscing about all the great things that the
Goodwill Committee of District 14 were part of during the
marking of the 50th Anniversary year of RTO/ERO. At the
AGM in May, 23 members, who newly turned 80, came as
Honoured guests to the meeting and were treated to lunch
and a rose. In September all those who served as past and
present Area Reps, along with
former Chairs, Lu Beange and
Margot Fraser, were sent
invitations to enjoy a lunch
together at the Old Winery
Restaurant in Niagara-on-the-
Lake. In all, there were 30 of us
at this happy event, including
members of the Executive and Martha Foster, Chair of the
Board of Directors of RTO/ERO. Then for the Fall Festival
Lunch in November, the Committee members were back at
work, addressing and stuffing the invitations to our most
senior members. We were so pleased that 18 could come
and be treated to a great meal, entertainment and presented
with flowers. We were especially thrilled that Hilda Stroud
at 101 years was able to come. She was the oldest in
attendance. Of course December became busy with the
sending out of holiday greetings to all District 14 members
90 and over, including those who live beyond Niagara.
Do not worry. We may be remembering what has gone on
before, but our work does not really stop. The Goodwill
Committee, the heart of District 14, keeps on pumping no
matter what the season, or month, or year, as your Area
Reps, with the information provided by RTO/ERO Toronto
office, keep sending out birthday cards to those turning 80,
85 and 90 and over. Another part of the job is to help share
in the profound moments in the lives of our members,
whether they are grieving, recovering or celebrating. For this
we count on you, their fellow members to let us know when
another member is in need of attention. Just contact your
Area Rep. We are now pleased to offer such means of
communication in French, as Margaret Tilbert has agreed to
be our Francophone advisor and translator. Just let a
Goodwill Committee member know about any occasion
when this service would be welcome. Of course, if ever you
would not welcome birthday cards or invitations, please let
us know that too. We thank the members of the Executive,
especially our President and Treasurer, who have agreed to
support us in our work serving District 14.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2019
RTO/ERO District 14 Niagara continues to participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies
throughout the Niagara Region. We thank all who
participated in this year’s events. Presentations of the
wreaths at the cenotaphs is not necessarily limited to
one person, for this reason we encourage other
members and their families to join in the ceremonies.
At some ceremonies, a Cadet presents the wreath on
our behalf. Please show your interest by contacting us
for next year.
This year we presented wreaths at 18 ceremonies in
partnership with 16 Royal Canadian Legions. Some
Legions have the tradition of having two ceremonies,
one on the Sunday before Remembrance Day and on
Remembrance Day.
It is a great time to
remember the many
men and women who
made the supreme
sacrifice in defending
our country in both
world wars and
serving as peace
keepers in many war
torn countries. We were pleased to observe that
these ceremonies are becoming more important within
each community as large crowds of people, both chil-
dren and adults were in attendance. District 14 will be
there again next year and we invite all of our members
to join us to remember.

Four Generations of GRAND Educators from Killaloe to Niagara !
Margaret (Ryan) Grand recently celebrated her 99th birthday in Welland. She is a retired
teacher who is part of four generations of educators with roots in the small towns of the Ottawa Valley and the Niagara region. Margaret’s mother, Mary Hennessy, attended Model
School in Renfrew at the age of 16 and taught elementary school in the Killaloe area from
1897 to 1907. She had to stop teaching when she married Cornelius Ryan in 1907 as
married women were not allowed to teach. Margaret, one of seven children, went to
Normal School in Ottawa after graduating from Grade 13 and taught from 1939 to 1948.
These included one room schoolhouses in Valley towns such as Simpson’s Pit and Cormac.
She typically boarded with farm families near the school and taught all grades, just like in
Anne of Green Gables! After the war years there was a shortage of teachers so her mother Mary was asked to
return to teaching at the age of 67! Her first school was Simpson’s Pit (1948) where her daughter and future son in
law, Ambrose, both had already taught. Mother and daughter would often plan school lessons together. Mary loved
teaching but knew she couldn’t teach forever. At the age of 78 she finally took herself off the supply list – 61 years
after her first teaching assignment!
Ambrose Grand, one of 10 children, lived in nearby Eganville. He became a teacher in 1937. He
taught in several one room school houses, including Simpson’s Pit. Ambrose remembers going to
his schools with a horse and cart in the winter time and picking up some of his students along the
way. Besides cleaning brushes, a treasured job in the school for the students was taking care of the
horse during the school day! Ambrose was drafted during the war but was sent back home when
an x ray revealed a scar on his lungs. He was not allowed to teach because he
might have tuberculosis. A series of x rays showed that it was from childhood
pneumonia and he resumed teaching the next year. Margaret and Ambrose
met at a barn dance in Cormac and married in Killaloe in 1948. This was the start of 68 years of
marriage!
The 1950’s brought about a boom in manufacturing jobs in the Niagara area and abundant
teaching opportunities. Many of the children from the Ryan and Grand families came to live in
Niagara and work as educators and nurses. Ambrose and Margaret Grand settled in Welland
and raised a family of five active boys.
Ambrose was a principal with the DSBN for 25 years at Welland South and Afton Public Schools. His sister, Ethel Grand, taught for many years at Matthews School in Welland. During the 1960’s Ambrose got his BA from Western
by taking summer courses as principals now needed a degree. For many summers Margaret took care of the five
boys on her own, taking them to the local swimming pool and city parks. She was ready for a vacation once
Ambrose returned home! Margaret did not take up teaching in Niagara as she found that taking care of five boys
was a fulltime job! She was an active member and leader in local church groups.
Ambrose retired in 1974 and remained a member of the RTO and church
organizations for many years. He enjoyed retirement and often reflected that while
he taught for 35 years, he was collecting his teacher pension for more than 40
years – right up to the age of 98 ! He was a lifelong learner, taking real estate and
auto mechanics courses at Niagara College. In the years after his retirement many
of his nephews and nieces became teachers, including Maureen and Colleen
Stewart from Welland. Ambrose and Margaret had five boys (Tom, Terry, Bob,
Kevin and Gerard) and twelve grandchildren. Four of his boys became teachers and
three (Tom, Kevin and Gerard) married teachers (Helen, Cathy and Esha)! Continued on Page 6 . . .
www.rtoero-district14.org
7
. . . continued from Page 5
Tom is a retired CBC producer. Helen taught Special Ed. Terry was a principal with the
Niagara Catholic Board and then a superintendent with the London Catholic Board. His
daughter, Jodie, is now teaching for Niagara Catholic, making her the fourth generation of Grand educators. She is pictured below with her son Alex and her grandmother,
Margaret, this fall. Bob is a retired principal with Niagara
Catholic. Kevin retired as the department head for Business
Studies at Notre Dame High School. His wife Cathy retired as an
ELL (English Language Learner) teacher. Their daughter Jill was a
high school teacher and is now raising a young family. Gerard was
a university professor at Brock (Economics) for nine years before becoming a land
developer in Niagara. His wife Esha taught FSL and kindergarten here in Niagara. With so
many teachers, summer holidays were one continuous family reunion for the Grands!
Ambrose is remembered as a kind and caring educator and father. He always put family first. Growing up, we
enjoyed going to his school with him on holidays to play ball hockey in the gym with our friends. We couldn’t
understand why he was spending that time in the principal’s office doing school work! Margaret’s advice on a
successful career in education is reflected in both her role as a teacher and as the mother of five boys, “You have to
enjoy what you’re doing and you have to be patient!” She still faces each new day with a positive outlook as she lives
her 100th year!

HEALTH BENEFITS
Information about changes to our Benefits Plans for 2019 was
sent to all participants in the late Fall. As well as the new
premium rates for Dental, Extended Health, and Semi-Private
Hospital and Convalescent Care, changes to our additional
services were announced. Eldercare Select has been
discontinued. In its place, Best Doctors 360 will now be
extended to your parents, parent-in-law and children even if
they are not a part of your Extended Health Care Plan. Best
Doctors is also adding a new Medical Records e-Summary
service. They will collect all your medical records and put
them on a USB key for you so that you can easily take these
records with you giving you access to them wherever you go.
Our Dental Plan reimbursements will also be updated to the
2019 fee guide for general practitioners.
The Health Benefits Committee would like your input as to
changes or additions that you, as a member, would like to see
in your Plan for 2020. Please forward your suggestions to

PENSION AND RETIREMENT CONCERNS
COMMITTEE
This year the main objective of the Provincial PRC Committee
is to gather resources and create awareness of the problem of social isolation among our older adult population. A Provincial workshop, held in October, attended by Kathy Smith and me,
focused on the impact of this problem on health and wellness. As well as the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Raza Mirza, a
panel discussion featured presenters from Toronto, Hamilton and Prince Edward County who outlined community projects
which identify and reach out to isolated seniors in their areas. Also, Canada's changing pension landscape was addressed by
OTPP and CUPE. Mark Firman and Lindy Charles of OTPP updated us on their current changes: a $10.3 billion surplus has
been allocated to a contingency reserve; there has been a decrease in contributions of 1.1% since January 1st; indexation
levels will be offered at 100% for all members as of January 2019. Kevin Skerret, a pension researcher from CUPE
discussed the shortcomings of "shared risk/target benefit” pension plans as opposed to our defined pension plan.
Another successful Wills, Estates and Trusts workshop with
Chris Wilson from Wilson & Opatovsky Barristers and Solici-tors, Port Colborne was held in October. This popular work-
shop will be offered again.

PROJECT SERVICE TO OTHERS
APPLICATIONS NOW BEING
ACCEPTED
Do you volunteer for an organization that needs funding for a special project? Please consider making
an application to District 14 for an RTO/ERO “Project
Service to Others” grant. Each year, we sponsor a
project that supports local, national and international
programs that often involve children, seniors and/or
disadvantaged groups, to a maximum of $4,000 per
project. In recent years we have given funds: to build a
“Teen Room” at Gillian’s Place; to help the opening of
the Child Advocacy Centre Niagara; to support NOVA
House in Niagara Falls; and to fund the Rinkside
Reading Rooms in Fort Erie area Arenas. This year, the
Provincial granting body is looking for projects that
have an emphasis on ending Seniors’ Social Isolation.
If you are involved in a project like one of these, or
know of a worthwhile local group that needs funding,
we encourage you to submit an application to District
14 for consideration. We want to help you!
Application Forms for approval for 2019 and a list of
previously approved projects (which are a good
resource for ideas) can be found on the RTO/ERO Website – www.ero-rto.org/programs-services/
project-service-others. We require your completed
application to be submitted to our District 14 Past
President no later than March 15, 2019. For more
information please contact Don Gray by phone at
905-646-9967 or by email at [email protected].
Having trouble getting to doctor’s appointments,
grocery shopping, social functions, fitness
programmes, dental appointment, etc? There are many free or low cost alternatives in all Niagara
Communities to help you. Start with Community Support
Services Niagara (call 905-563-9501 for NW Niagara; 905-
