It has been a busy week this week for the world and for our church. Unsettling proposals about the future of our denomination and the most recent strikes against US Military targets in Iraq, are scary reminders of the fragile nature of relationships - between nations, denominations, organizations, families and even our personal relationships with others, one-on-one. Relationships are fragile because, at a basic level, they are always between fragile human beings. Feelings get hurt, one betrays another, lack of communication or misunderstandings widen the gap between people. Some relationships are purpose driven and some are compatibility driven and still others are based on familial ties or shared beliefs. Regardless, these are all human relationships and so many things affect them. Thankfully, there is a relationship that is offered which does not depend on who we are or what we have done. This relationship is offered by God, through his son, Jesus Christ, and it is offered because God loves us. Not with a love that is dependent on our worthiness, but an unconditional love that stems from who God is. The Bible says that God IS love. It is his essence - his very being. And God offers his love to us and if we will receive that love, made real in Jesus' life, death and resurrection, and give our lives over to Jesus, making him Lord of our lives, then we will begin a relationship that will last. Because Jesus will never leave us- in the good times, in the scary times.....all the time. Dear ones, if you are feeling alone, scared, betrayed, misunderstood, or just unsettled... Jesus wants a relationship with you, and with him you can have a peace in the midst of troubling times that the world cannot give, but thankfully, can never take away. Leadership Training Dear Ones, as we begin 2020 here at La Plata UMC, we need to begin strong! We have had capable and talented folks step up to leadership in our church for the first time and we give thanks to those whose experience, talent, and willingness continue to help guide and support God's work in the world through our mission and ministries. To place all of us on the same path for success, our Leadership Training Day will take place on Jan 11 from 10am-12pm. This training is mandatory for those assuming new positions and attendance is expected for ALL those in leadership. Please let the Church Office know if you have a conflict. Thanks!

ASP Mile of Pennies Fundraiser Are you looking for a good home for that can or jug of pennies/coins you’ve been saving? Please help us in our drive to raise two miles of pennies ($1,689.60) in support of our Appalachia Service Project (ASP) teams (over 50 folks total) that will be traveling to West Virginia and Virginia this summer to make several homes warmer, safer and drier; to develop and deepen relationships; and to be Christ’s hands and feet for those in need. Just deposit your donations in the coffee cans in Fellowship Hall 2 or in the Narthex near the sanctuary. We’ll keep you updated as we tally the donations. Cash and checks also accepted. Many thanks!

Cookies For College The youth are preparing to make cookies to send to our college students. This outreach to our college students is a great way to remind them that they are still a valued and loved part of our church family. Names and addresses are being collected of college students. Forms are on the back tables (place in church office mailbox or give to Corrie) or you can contact Corrie Roberts directly at [email protected]. Names need to be received by Sun, Jan 26.

Volunteers can register online to attend the training and to participate in that day’s activities at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/508094FA4A92BA4FB6-2020 Please understand that to be assigned at the command center, means never leaving the LifeStyles building. You will be prepping the groups that are going out. There are four, four-hour shifts at the command center. The other two choices for each shift require that you travel somewhere in Charles County. A Wonderful Winter's Day

By Paul D. Berube

The first snowfall quietly came, This morning with God’s rising sun; He left a blanket clean and white,

So we might have some winter fun. Let’s break out our boots and our sleds,

Find a steep hill to slide on down; We’ll play til we can’t feel our toes,

Then pass the hot chocolate around. We’ll light a fire in the clearing,

Just big enough to warm our hands; Then call all the children around,

Tell them about God’s winter plans. How God provides the snow for us,

Simply one of His many gifts; Along with the ice on the lake, In His way, our spirits He lifts.

We’ll cut a hole in the ice and fish, Atop of the ice we can skate;

There is so much to see and do, On this, God’s wonderful winter day.

It’s all in how we look at it, Blessings from God or nature’s wrath?

It depends on what’s in our hearts, The answer’s as simple as that.
